📣 Head's up! I have VERY helpful light strip videos planned for 2023, so subscribe to this channel so you don't miss those.
what do you suggest for 50' of led lighting to light up stair path...I just need to run it down the side. I want them bright. Im not to worried about diffusion just brightness and having it powered at only one end. I want rgb so I can change colors. programming it to do crazy stuff is not a requirement.
When someone says "LED diodes" it's such a pet peeve of mine... The D in LED stands for diode! 😁
😂
Similar to people saying "ATM Machine" M already stands for Machine😂

That looks incredible! Nice job! My most recent set of light strips, I went DIY, and yeah... my soldering still sucks. I felt like I needed the bigger gauge wire to cross a gap, but then I had a hell of a time soldering them to the strips. Even these crimp connectors I got to make it easier, still caused a lot of headaches.
I'm happy that this time you address the CRI score of the led strips. Cheers! :)
DIY with 5-volt addressable strips gives you higher resolution (and can power the esp32 right from it). It can will require power injection for longer runs, but if you aren't afraid of a little soldering, you can get really nice results.
Definitely want teh COB variant for what I'm planning to install, not a big fan of seeing LED's. DIY kind of speaks more to me, just getting a handle on the whole thing and problemsolving seems like fun. The biggest challenge so far, as you also say in the video, is just figuring out what the heck to buy. There's so much out there and it's not clear at all. Wiring DC stuff is a doddle, soldering is easy, but finding the right components to buy so it all works, that's tough. Especially since I'm also only now getting into the home automation bit for real, took one of my existing Raspberry PI's and slapped a Z-wave transceiver on it, but now I have to wrap my head around Z-wave, Zigbee and all that stuff as well. Still... it should be fun.
Another great video, thank you again. I love how you explain both options so I can decide which is better for my application. Heading over to Reed's Smart Home to check out how to build my own light strip
LED Lightstrips will forever be my favorite Lights thanks to you reed. Thank you. 🥰
I got the Lenovo Smart LED Lightstrip, 5-meters, for about $13 in January.
Wish it was brighter, but it's really efficient. And reliable.
Pretty happy with it.
This is such a great video! I’m getting all the information I need, you’re laying it all out in a digestible way . I feel way more informed before I make any purchases . Thank you:)
That was very informative I wasn’t aware about the diy aspect
Hi Reed, great video. Do you happen to know if you can cut the FCOB dreamcolor strips you used and then make use of the remaining, or is that fit for the bin once it's been cut?
I'd really like to try and make some use of these strips if i can but the use case i would like to put them too would mean several shorter strips, i'd like to save by buying a larger roll but that's of no use to me if i cn't use the remaining strip once i've cut it. Thanks in advance
I’ve been seeing a lot of these DIY options lately. Been debating on doing it myself.
Another good option for the diy if you dont want to Solder wires is get a dig uno controller for the lights comes with QLED on it and is small and easy to hide
I find that if you just want color and not really sure or don’t really care on the where and specifics, Govee is fine.
If you have very specific requirements (needs to be primary lighting for the room), LEDs need to be individually addressable because of a certain effect you want, need to be able to control total brightness (may need power injection), want strips to specifically be on these edges and these under cabinet and these vaulted ceiling trims, extensions tend to be much easier with DIY, then DIY is the way to go.
Sometimes you want a corner trim to connect to an edge trim, to connect to an upfiring trim, to a non-diffused downfiring trim and you want them all to go sequentially. Go DIY. There’s no kit solution for that.
It’s work going DIY, no doubt about it. And most of the work is research. I think once you get all the right components and tools, install is pretty straightforward.
Good comment. Do you know if using a zigbee controller OS better than this soldering method ?
Love the look of them cob ones, time to go look for some :)
Hi, again a great video! :-) Question: To which automation ecosystem did you connect this DIY solution?
Just dropped in to say I always watch your uploads. A little hammy sometimes but still great 😂 keep up the good work 👊
This video help me building my room. Thank u. DIY>preassembled
Who hasn’t been in the same predicament as occurred in the outtro?
Do you have a tutorial for plastered in LED for ceilings in a home? What would something like that take to make it happen? Power, durability? Etc
I love the little end scenes after each vid 😂
LED density is measured in LEDs per meter. You can buy much more dense strips for DIY projects than the one you have here. Looks like you are using a 60 LED/Meter strip. You can get them at 144/meter.
Can you link the deep Chanel covers that you’ve shown in the video that you couldn’t see the individual diodes?
Hey mate what's the light bulb you've got in your sonos lamp ??? Looks awesome !!!
Hey Reed how do you get the channel with diffusion to stay on the wall like that?
Deym, those look so much better than expected
cool, I'm going to replace the light strips in my bed soon because they are just RGB, but I really like the remote they came with, so I'm coding a aurdeno for control with a ir receiver so the new lights will be RGBWW
Great video. Do you have any thoughts about Hue compatible lightstrips?
Cool video great work but I do like the Govee more in the corner I really like the actual colors of Govee's Strip
2:12 the rubber band you've been looking for is by the left side of the cabinet on the floor. :)
Is the ESP32 cover you use in this video something you 3D printed or is it available for purchase through Amazon?
What lamp is that next to the corner strip ? Looks cool
A house full of light🤩🤩
Great Video!!, will check out the second channel video on how to use the DIY route
Great video! I'm looking to shine color from my ceiling onto a wall painted flat black. I don't want to see the LED diodes so I'm wondering if there are LEDs that point or are cut at an angle. In other words, if I'm looking at that wall I just want to see the effect of the light, not the LED diodes. Similar to those under your bed, cabinet, etc. I'm wondering if i need to install a small piece of wood across the ceiling to physically hide the LED strip. Thoughts?
Which mobile app are you using with the Gledopto controller? I can’t seem to find one. You showed one being used in the video. I have mine connected through my 4th Gen. Echo that has Zigbee built in. But I was hoping to use a dedicated Gledopto app or similar app instead of Alexa. Thanks!!
Are there any options in the USA for in-wall switch panels/controllers for ARGB strips? I'm working on a project for a friend, and she wants to stay away from needing to control her kitchen's strips via an app and would like an in-wall panel that has a standard on/off switch and the ability to change the strips' colors from the wall panel.
In our neighborhood we are staying to see outdoor lightstrips under the eaves of the house. Have you done outside lightstrips yet?
Same with out neighborhood. I haven't done those yet but it would be a fun project!
Reed, COB stands for “chip on board”. It is a type of integrated circuit manufacturing process.
so i’m looking to wirelessly control led strip lights mounted to each drum in my sons marching band. how would you attach that project? i am a little lost on controlling led lights wirelessly on a football field
Great Video! One thing to note is that the Govee M1 Lightstrip does not have separate LEDs for white, so it can't produce a very warm white. If you only want to use the RGB colors anyway, it doesn't matter.
You know i know diy would’ve been probably better. But ive just installed my govee m1 strip and it’s honestly doing everything i want it to do
I'm going to go to DIY route because of the reparability and I already have the equipment necessary to put it together and I have never went to college for it.
I have installed a three way Meross wall switch and experiencing some problems . Installed just one . The light does switch on and off at the Meross switch. But at the other switch the light will some times come right back on after turning off the switch. Do I have it wired wrong ? Thanks in advance ,love the videos.
Thanks Reed great Video. I had suggested a WLED video a few months ago. I’ve got totally addicted to using it . Hope you are having fun with it.
The decision for many is direct controllability. For example, none of the pre-packaged strips can be controlled by DMX. For a “set-n-forget” rig, then, yeah, prepackaged is the way to go. For my designs I need direct control to work with the rest of my lighting system. That part was kind of unsettling. DIY implies an interest in learning new skills and understanding of new things, like electronics or woodworking, or whatever, so it doesn’t require being an electrical engineer, but it does require an interest in learning something new, so that complaint is invalid.
What products would you recommend for a google smart room? Are wifi products good or should i just go all in an Aqara?
Can you advise me what the absolute brightest+saturated bulb is? for me, a bulb should be super bright and have super good colors. I don't care about special stuff, just that i can change from rgbw with the brighrst possible colors. thanks
hello, can you tell me what settings you used in WLed for the Cob led strip? I bought one with 720 addressable LEDs per meter and I can't configure it. it is the led strip that was also left in the description of the clip. thank you
Wanna a dedicated video on Philips hue lights.
i hand soldered 90 connections of power, ground & data of those ws2812b to make a color 30 led 7 segment adruino clock for 3 days.
So if i wanted to run these BTF addressable dream color lights strips around the entire edge of my daughters bedroom ceiling, which is around 50ft, would I need 2 powersupplies and 2 controllers and 2 wifi processors to get this to work properly? Also, if I wanted it to work with Alexa, would I need anything else? Thanks. Great videos you got on your channel BTW.
the preassembled are literally the same strips but with some waterproofing layer and diffuser integrated
Hello, I haven't gotten a proper answer from anyone to the following question:
I have a smart home system built on Apple Homekit with about 10 different hubs and around 200 different additional devices. Could I use Home Assistant system alongside it in a way that it doesn't disrupt my current Apple Homekit system? In other words, can these two systems operate simultaneously?
What interests me about Home Assistant are its extensive automations.
Also, thank you for your very good videos. I follow you avidly here from Finland.
It looks like you installed them in the 10mm wide v channel diffuser. No issues with the strips being 12mm? Looked like the excess bent easily enough.
Yeah they seemed to fit fine. Those corner channels are pretty forgiving on the width.
I live in a log cabin and am wanting to put lighting on my kitchen ceiling because my ceiling is beams it's so dark. But how do I do that from beam to beam for every section of my ceiling?
With the DIY, can you turn them on and off with a switch as well as app
Thanks Reed.
Does the controller method of connecting it mean I don’t have to solder anything?
Is there a video on how to use that option?
just an fyi goove has a "desk strip" which is already defused and its 84 leds per meter instead of the m1 which are 60 I believe.
Will those COB DYI work with HomeKit?
I need your help I want to put some lights to my garage doors, try to make their run on red when garage is going to open, green when is open and another color when is close but I don't know how to make them go smart
Can you sync these up with govee? Like govee dreamview?
Hopefully you got some extras to string some lights for your dog house.
Hello wanted to see a video on samsung smart things station. Review and automation Ideas.
What do you think of tapo
Is the ESP32 cover you use in this video something you 3D printed? Where can I finde the stl-file?
do you know of any pre-assembled addressable strips that have a remote control and an app? For a child's bedroom
Awesome video, as always. Is there any way to set something similar to this up in Smartthings?
I haven't tried to get it connected to SmartThings yet. Looks like some people did get it working with SmartThings with a device handler a while ago github.com/damien67/WLED-SmartThings but I'm not sure with all the changes to SmartThings if that would still work.
Well it’s worth a try. Thanks for the reply 😊 And huge Thank you for your videos, I really enjoy watching them.
Is there a good diy Bluetooth controller?
7:06 I couldn!t understand this part. What did he do to the strip led?
Funny, sitting here watching this as I covert some new Govee lights to WLED!!
Wait, what! Converting Govee? How?
@@phillips_9150 correct. Just cut off the Govee controller and add a diguno or similar controller. Worked great.
The main problem with store bought lights, lack of customization, especially with addressable LED's.
I like your t-shrt. Where'd you get that?
I need a led strip that can go a long way on 1 or 2 power sources for Crown Molding. All the LEDs I see are outrageously priced, or they don't have full color and full whites for a responsible price
The DIY RGBWW light strips I have in the description should fit what you are looking for. Make sure to get 24v so you will have less resistance and lower voltage drop with a long length.
How Long of a run can I do on one 24v? I think I need around 300 linear ft to run.
Thank you! My light strips behind my living room TV simply refused to stay up, even when I used 3M wire clips. I used the Gorilla tape trick and it worked a treat!
Hahahaha. The end was so cool. Hahaha
Did you know that Govee introduced a preset feature that can be activated with google assistant? It has always worked with alexa by the way....
what is the cost difference between govee m1 and diy for same length
Am i the only one who fall in love with that lamp in background please can anyone tell me where can I buy that
I am a smartthings user and is there a controller that works best with that?
Welcome to WLED! I’ve been looking for a 60 led/meter individually addressable strip that has each LED as being brighter than the ws2812b strips, anyone know of something? Meaning if it had one single led on full brightness, it would be brighter than a ws2812B on with a single pixel on full brightness.
2815 or sk6812
diffusers rule of thumb : distance of diffuser to led >= distance fro. LED - LED
Awesome content. Glad you are making money off those amazon affiliate links!
Ws2815 oder Govee M1 , 2x 7,5m getrennt an gegenüberliegenden Wänden?
What camera do u use to record your videos?
There is a huge problem with GOVEE... they do NOT SELL separate controllers.. I bought the 65' version.. and it comes with 2, 33' rolls.. well if you want to put them in different rooms.. you are out of luck or even if you want to put them end to end.. NOPE not going to happen you have to be within the distance of the dual cables coming out of the controller box.. so NOT GOOD for that.. just Saiyan make sure you get as close to the size run that you need.. or you will be wasting money .. I love the DIY with individual adjustable leds.. and then just get a separate controller.. they have some that are super easy to use and are universal ..
but how long they look good?
Is it just me or do they not sell those kasa lightstrips anymore
He is so dang silly at the end of these vids lol
Anyone know what lamp that is in the background?
Maybe just use govee's neon rope? 😅
Always matter!
It says 4mins ago but your comment 5mins ago witch is not possible

LED diodes = Light emitting diode diodes. Like PIN number.
a 7 minute ad for premade lcd light strips
Just get COB led strip and dont worry about the dot.
do you have a link to the esp8266 case?
I see a bunch on thingyverse, but none that have the same mounting holes on the pin side shown at 1:15.
Do not put solder on the tip of the iron, melt it direclyy on the wire! You burn off the flux otherwise!!
