Hans Zimmer Wins Best Original Score for 'The Lion King' ►► ua-cam.com/users/shortsdOfQCX8fzZg
On this day I still wonder, how the actual f*ck this is the only Oscar Hans Zimmer ever got. He deserves about 4 or 5.
+Barca 97 say what?! Yeah, I thought he had like a separate house packed witch Oscars statuettes.
+Barca 97 Morricone > Zimmer
+Barca 97 I'm surprised too..!
+HZ-FCB 97 I know
+HZ-FCB 97 he's the Leonardo Di Caprio of composers
Can’t believe it took almost 30 years for him to receive another Oscar.
Which movie did he win for the 2nd time. Personally I think he deserved a lot more oscars for dark knight Interstellar, pirates of the Caribbean etc.
@@rahulmenon9530 Dune. Well deserved, but he should’ve won for those too.
@@rahulmenon9530 Pirates of the Caribbean reused many themes from Gladiator so he was never going to win anything for that.
Still can't believe he didn't win for Inception
Thomas Newman with Two nomination couldn't beat Hz.
Hans doesnt need to have a long speech. he IS HANS ZIMMER he can just say something for 15 seconds and everyone respects him. Full on genius. Should have won for inception
He should have won for Inception, Interstellar and Dunkirk.
Gladiator
Interstellar, most definitely. But Social Network earned that Score oscar.
Man of Steel as well, its a damn underrated masterpiece
@@mattgeiger7638 couldn't agree more, and im the biggest Zimmer fan - but the social network score is my favourite film score of all time
The Lion King, Inception, Interstellar, Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Pirates of the Caribbean, 12 Years a Slave, Sherlock Holmes, The Pacific, Pearl Harbor, The Thin Red Line and so on.... i see here AT LEAST 5 Potential Oscar winners.
miroBGgsi yup
Man of Steel ?
2 atleast for Inception and Gladiator.
He was practically ROBBED the year he was nominated for Interstellar
Pirates of the Caribbean is actually composed by Klaus Badelt.
What an outrage. Han deserves more Oscars
Hans has become a Music God.
Ben17TheNerd Not anymore
become?
I think he also should have won for The thin red line, Gladiator, Inception and Interstellar. By the way, why the fuck wasn't he even nominated for Pearl Harbor? !
right. Han Solo deserves at least 3 Oscars. One for every movie
One Oscar isn't enough
He deserves at least 10
True
hah thats true AF
Understatement
Interstellar, dunkirk,TDK are the most deserving imo
He’s should have won Gladiator, The Last Samurai, Kung Fu Panda 2 with John Powell, and Inception.
He should win an honorary Oscar every year. He's too good.
+Jordan Santacana Honorary Oscars are for people that have never won one before
+zombiesnyder13 His skill is badass that he deserves an Oscar every year just for the hell of it.
You must be joking.
Well dont forget John Williams etc
Hans Zimmer's talent in a nutshell:
"Writing a score is much easier than this. Thank you. Just let me go, ok?" :)))
21 years later and this is still his only win. To the academy: you really know your shit.
+Youssef Arafat Then again, when else should he have won?
He could've won for Rain Man, but that was his first nom (and Dave Grusin, who would win for scoring The Milagro Beanfield War, was an Oscar-less veteran at that point).
He wasn't going to win for his next four noms (The Preacher's Wife, As Good As It Gets, and The Thin Red Line/The Prince Of Egypt in the same year).
The Academy was too in love with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (which won Tan Dun the Score Oscar) to give another statuette to eventual Best Picture winner Gladiator.
Then, Zimmer wouldn't get another nom (Pirates of the Caribbean was recognized for other crafts) until Inception, which *is not* a better score than The Social Network.
Interstellar would've been a fantastic score for Zimmer to win again, but Alexandre Desplat was already having such a winless streak that the Academy finally gave it to him for The Grand Budapest Hotel (in addition to also gaining a nod for his Imitation Game score).
At least Zimmer has one, and for a *magnificent* score. That main Lion King motif alone is worth his only Oscar. Granted, I think Thomas Newman's Shawshank Redemption score is the best of the nominees, and it sucks that Newman (like cinematographer Roger Deakins) *is still Oscar-less after 13 nominations*, but Newman losing to Zimmer makes perfect sense. It's the Disney Renaissance, plus Newman had the misfortune of splitting votes between Shawshank and Little Women, two small films at the time.
+BlueFox94 I'm going to get mad and this reply won't be pretty for you have reminded me of a comment I wrote 11 months ago about the stupid injustice of that louzy organization called the academy...
First of all, you have some valid points but you giving an excuse several times because other nominees haven't won before is not a thing.. It's not an excuse and you need to never mention that again in an argument; I just don't care if some other awesome composer hasn't won an oscar before, the academy should award for the "best original score" as the title of the award is, not the "best composer who hasn't won an oscar yet."
And, secondly, you simply stating that Inception is not a better score than The Social Network as if that proving anything to anyone! Let me show how you stated that by typing the exact opposite, "well, The Social Network is not a better score than Inception and in fact it's even worse than How to Train Your Dragon."
I'm not going to go through all my favorite Zimmer scores and complain why they haven't won anything or even get nominated (!) because there are so many (The Last Samurai, The Da Vinci Code and Sherlock Holmes to mention a few,) instead I'm going to mention some scores that should have won outright because of their outstanding nature that set the bar for everyone high afterwards: Gladiator (not a war movie ever since hasn't used choir to support instrumentals,) Inception, and Interstellar.
Youssef Arafat I'm not necessarily justifying an organization's tendency to spread the wealth around, but when other scores are in contention and you've won already, I'd be inclined to let it pass.
I personally wouldn't have voted for Zimmer for any of his noms since The Lion King. (That includes Gladiator, which lost to a nice east-Asian score for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, courtesy of Tan Dun.)
Plus, The Social Network's score is so fluid, so layered, and so nuanced. More importantly, it's integral to the film for which it was composed. Zimmer's Inception score is towering and iconic, but seriously, his 3-note, 4-note motifs are getting quite tired. It also hurts that that score set a low precedent for many action scores today. I've never seen anything in film music quickly become a cliche as fast as the "booming action score" and Zimmer does share some blame in that trope becoming perpetuated.
Which is why Interstellar would've been a fantastic 2nd Oscar for him, assuming that Alexandre Desplat didn't have an extraordinary 2014 (in which he scored The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Imitation Game, Godzilla, Unbroken, and The Monuments Men). Zimmer's Interstellar score was colorful, subtle, booming when it needed to be, but quiet and emotional as well at other times.
Zimmer would do well do compose more scores like Interstellar.
+BlueFox94 To be honest with you, I don't even know what a 3- not or 4-note is, I just listen to music and judge it by my own taste, that's all.
I remember one interview where Zimmer stated that just because a melody is so simple that doesn't mean it's not great and that the greatest example of that is how the the 9th symphony started out with one of the simplest intros ever and it's, well, the 9th symphony...
As for the "let it pass" thing, that's just irrelevant; if you make the best score ten years running you should collect the awards regardless of any other aspect, or at least that's how I see it.
And, let's talk about how integral and essential Inception score is, shall we? Did you know that "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien" is the main theme of the whole score? How mind blowing is that, huh? The music of that movie tells a story of its own, buddy!
And, by the way, the music slows down each TIME you go deeper in the dream! How is that for integration in the movie realm?
Finally, let's talk about the "booming action score" as you've mentioned: Zimmer made that thing up! It's not his fault that everyone after him just copied the same idea (I know he did it himself sometimes, but that's totally okay!) which is, again, what they did in every war movie since Gladiator.. I'm not saying that just because he's the pioneer then that means he's better, because we have gruesome people who pioneered wrong ideas, but what I mean is you cannot question a man for an idea he created because people used it frequently after him till it became a mainstream or repetitive!
Youssef Arafat I know about Inception's score, sir. I studied it in high school. I'm aware of its subtleties, but when you have two well-integral scores, I go with the one that's more complex, more nuanced, and more layered. That's Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross and I'm honestly quite glad the Academy went with them.
Whatever we may opine about the quality of his scores, what doesn't change is history. The Academy has not seen fit to award him for any of his nominated scores since The Lion King and, in the context of what his scores were nominated against, I don't have a problem with that. Frankly, I wouldn't have voted for him either, except The Lion King. What you or I say won't change that, until he makes a score so unique and magnificent (or at least probably not of the booming action score that has become so prevalent since Inception) in a year when everyone else's scores pale by comparison that the Academy will not resist giving Mr. Zimmer his 2nd Oscar.
“Just let me go, okay?” Hahahaha
And create 20-30 more masterpieces......
Just let it go zimmer
best speech ever lol
Hans Zimmer has some of the best work I've heard and I honestly can't believe he hasn't won another Oscar yet.
It is known in Hollywood, that Hans Zimmer didnt do much of his work on his own. Sorry to burst your bubble
Rubens too bad for you.
@@Rubens_991 lol, what? get off the drugs because Hans is amazing.
@@Rubens_991 dark knight? Interstellar? Gladiator? Inception?
He now finally has another one, 6 years after your comment 😅
Hans Zimmer = Music.
I would have said Music = Hans Zimmer :p
The Lion King has great music score.
jwelch5742 ok
jwelch5742 the best on Disney
Agreed. Such a simply beautiful score. One of my favorite scores in film ever, honestly.
More than great
It is alongside 'Hunchback of Notre Dame' and 'Beauty and the Beast' one of the best scores from a Disney film.
This one's an interesting one. It's the first time Thomas Newman is nominated (twice, no less) and hadn't won since, it's Alan Silvestri's _only_ Best Original Score nomination, and it's Hans Zimmer's _only_ Oscar win.
Makes me bitter about Silvestri
He won for the entire score. You might be thinking of the most famous song is "Circle of Life."
Oh Shutup Mr.Oscar . We ain't stupid . Your stupid ass Judging Panel is stupid for Depriving this man of the 5-6 Oscars he should have won by now .
He should have got more than 3 by now 🥺
@Kam W bro why would the social media manager know
@Kam W mmm idk some people are really like this
@Oscars shut the fuck up
Hans Zimmer should have a lot more wins, especially from Gladiator, Inception, and Interstellar.
He deserves one for dark knight, one for interstellar, and one for inception. idk how the fuck he doesnt have more
Kiarash Aalaei that's oscars for you
A guy like Jerry Goldmsith who composed some of the most recognisable and awesome scores ever and a gigantic body of work had 18 nominations and only one win. That is a joke. Hans and his army of ghostwriters don't even come close to that.
Can't say the same about Interstellar. Alexandre Desplat was too brilliant that year and deserved to win.
Same goes for TDK. AR Rahman deserved that....
I think one of the most underrated scores of all time is “The Last Samurai”
That score is a masterpiece well deserved .
How in the world did Mr. Zimmer only win ONE?!?!! I still think GLADIATOR is one of the greatest soundtracks of all time!
You still amaze us all, good Sir.
😎🎶👍
Probably the best score ever composed for an animated film.
This score had a very strong impact to me in my childhood, when i grew up i realized that the score itself is what is triggering the nostalgia in me more than the animation or the story. And until this day when i hear the score the twinge in my heart appears.Lion King stays forever my favorite movie of all time, not just animation. Thank you Hans Zimmer for the endless inspiration provided!
For me this remains Hans Zimmer's best original score!
ALE280290 Same here. It's just a shame though that Silvestri had to be competing with Forrest Gump this same year (great score as well).
ALE280290 I think so too
It's not his best
I think Prince of Egypt would be mine
This is definitely up there for me. However the score he did for Spirit: Stallion of The Cimmarron holds a special place in my heart.
Well deserved! The music in Lion King is so beautiful and well done.
He's a musical poet and each of his scores are just unbelievable. Truly.
Should have one another one for the Gladiator aswell. That music tears me up everytime
Haha, best acceptance speech ever.
Oh, I already wrote it. I was just coming back to write the same thing having forgotten that I did it already.
I just heard him say in an interview on Gold Derby (from 2017) that he has not watched his Oscar moment to this day! Said he can't do it and he just wanted to get out of there. He also said he had stage fright. I think it is so cool that in this moment of joy, shock, whatever he decided to follow his gut feeling not to do the pre-written speech and just make it short and good, before it gets weird. Even if he doesn't enjoy stages that much, I really hope he will be on that particular stage again some time soon, he really deserves it!
@@misssophie6515 that is so relatable. When ever my name is in a drawing I pray they don't pick me!
Jack Palance or Joe Pesci had the best ones
"I'd like to thank the fluffiest actor in show business." hahaha
It's so sad, that just the nominees from 1995 had way more impact on film industry, than the winners of last couple of years
After 27 years waiting, he finally won another one 🙌
And today he won second Oscar for Dune . congratulations Hans Zimmer
Hans Zimmer deserves so many more Oscars than he has right now
Wow, the man had some crazy competition that year. All of the mentioned nomineed scores are legendary.
1:05 Tempo is so important. If his music was like what the band played, he wouldn't have won that Oscar
Well they don't really have much of a choice, they have to convey the theme clearly by the time he gets on stage
"Just let me go0o0o0o0o0o0o!" lol
Hans Zimmer fully deserved his Oscar win for "The Lion King"! The score is just as masterful as the film!
"Writing a score's much easier than this" lol
He's actually admitted to stage fright which is insane given he's a legend in the business with worldwide renown and success. Even when you see him in this video, were he not to draw attention to it, you'd have no idea he was nervous given, while a little energetic (naturally he's just won an Oscar), he still has great command and presence.
What a legend! He’ll definitely get another one for Dune. The sketchbook album is pretty amazing!
If Hans wins an Oscar for Dune, It will be his 2nd Oscar since The Lion King 1994, but I could be wrong, Let's keep our fingers crossed that he'll get the 94th Academy Award for Best Original Score but It going to be a tight competition for the 94th Oscars
The downgrade...
@@RCC_1 his Dune soundtrack feels like a part of the world , like a character , we can’t say the same for most of his music in his films . plus , Dune is a masterpiece
@@RCC_1 and he won
@@fahad.2924 Of course he won. His name is Hans Zimmer and the film is called Dune. Not even I can't recall the names of the other nominees except Johnny Greenwood. Popularity>quality.
The score of Hans Zimmer in "The Lion King" is absolutely epic. But now, we receive confirmation that he is going to score the upcoming live action adaptation of the film.
Its going to be fantastic.
Well, the score is still epic. The 2019 movie, however....

Wow, I just found this comment.
I will never understand how Hans Zimmer could've only got two Oscars.
Same reason why Musker and Clements never won Best Animated Feature(Conceived, Wrote and Directed The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules, Treasure Planet, Princess and the Frog, Moana...)
Hans Zimmer is the only score creator I've ever heard of. The fact he only has 2 Oscars is inconceivable. He deserves a lot more praise.
He looked so young!
One of the biggest and strongest scores ever made. Well deserved.
Like everyone else, I'm shocked and outraged he has only one Oscar.
if he watches this video, he would laugh for he said just let me go and he escaped, lol
I don't know if anybody could understand how proud I feel of him for winning the oscar again for DUNE. After 28 years and 13 nominations it was an obligation for the academy award again this master, even more after Interstellar. My favourite one ever: Hans Zimmer, two times Academy winner
I hope he win next year for Dune
Thomas Newman is worth the Oscars at shawshank redemption
I remember that piece of music, and I see Red, in that bus, just smiling, excited to go see his friend Andy.
Hanz Zimmer himself said that the Shawshank score was the best and should have won.
Forrest Gump, Shawnshank Redemption and Lion King?? What a crazy year
Best movie composer in a long time. His scores give me goose bumps
He sees so down to earth. By far my favorite composer.
The music in the lion king is unreal good. It's crazy it was used in a childrens cartoon.
Anyone After Dune Oscar?
This is the greatest soundtrack of all time
Amazing soundtrack by an incredible artist.
What an incredible line up of films. Haven't been many years in the last dozen when we'd have half as many good films as that come out.
Hans deserved oscar for Inception, Gladiator, Interstellar, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Dark Knight, Sherlock and Man of Steel
He writes music beautifully.
WELL DONE HANS ZIMMER. YOUR SCORE FOR DISNEY'S THE LION KING WAS AMAZING! YOU'RE MY FAVORITE MUSICAL COMPOSER AND YOU ALWAYS WILL BE!!
The Lion King forever the best
I love how laidback Zimmer is about everything. And this has persisted into his fame years as well. Had the opportunity to see his live show and he's just so... human about it. Yes, he's the composer, but he's also a musician at heart. He performed in almost every song himself, either on the guitar, the piano or some other instrument, and after each song he had warm words and sharp-witted quips to share with his fellow performers. In addition to being one of the best composers to ever be born, he also seems like just a really fun guy to hang out with and it's nice to see.
Absolutely incredible how he always finds a way to bring out such deep emotion with his music.
For all you young cats out there, you know Hans Zimmer is a legend when you can use the Lion King as a reference point for some of the music he's created over the years and is still in high demand.
No one in Hollywood's history has quite a record like him in composition, he's the man too call when ever you feel you have an epic on your hands and he will always deliver on his part...just pray the movie is as good!
Well done sir.
In my opinion, Thomas Newman deserves Oscars for both Little Women and The Shawshank Redemption. So powerful soundtracks!
Finding Nemo and Series of Unfortunate Events too
I’m sorry, but the Oscar rightfully goes to Hans Zimmer for The Lion King for this Academy Awards ceremony. The score for Shawshank and Women have got NOTHING on Lion King‘a score.
@@hunterolaughlin Too bad you don't understand music.
@@user-xt4bf1vt4r I do! But listening to Lion King’s soundtrack, there’s no competition. Lion King does have the SUPERIOR score. Just accept it.

I had the ST of Spirit for two years in my mp3... I speak seriously, really. And I still cry when I hear The Rock of the King
I didn’t even know you could get nominated twice in the same category Jesus Thomas Newman
I wanted Thomas Newman to win. Hans Zimmer should have won for Inception and Interstellar.
That year was full of absolute masterpieces!
That was honestly a perfect and minimal speech, loved it
Yeah even tho Forrest Gump is my most favorite movie of all time and I also think the soundtrack was beautiful the Oscar for Hans Zimmer is TOTALLY deserved! The music he wrote for The Lion King is just epic and a big big part of my childhood! Definitely deserved..

really he won it for the lion king and not inception...WHAT THE FUCK
Yeah. But lion king was a great score but yes ur right inception should've won as well!! In my opinion
exactly
inception or interstellar are very great movie! however, the winner will depend on how dramatic the music is. technically, it was more difficult to compose lion king instead of composing for inception or interstellar

jp3813 the avengers score isnt that good
Agreed, The Mummy returns is one of the best scores ever (although the film is shite). He should at least gotten the Oscar for BTTF.
Completely agree with you, The Mummy Returns (the Suite in particular) is one of the best film scores ever.
You forgot cast away
I love Hans Zimmer. His music is great
1995 was a stacked year on terms of movies
I didn't realise this was his only Oscar. I have to say, the lion king is his best work so if it had to be 1 Oscar then it's right it should be for the lion king. but yeah I am surprised he doesn't win them regularly. I personally think he's better than john williams
Better than John Williams? LOL Zimmer is a Pop Artist who doesn't even come close to a classically trained composer like Williams. He can't even comprehend the complexity in writing, harmonies and orchestrations of some of William's scores. It's fucking ridiculous to put a self taught Pop musicians in the same league as WIlliams, Goldsmith, Herman or other classic composers.
And yet Hans not being in the same league as classically trained composers is a fact, not an opinion.
I don't hate him, I even really like some of his earlier scores, like Rain Man, Backdraft.
I do admit that I can't stand the Media Venture standard action theme, which consists of horrible synth strings and brass blaring the same simplistic tune in unisono. It was nice in Crimson Tide, got tiresome in The Rock and Gladiator and by the time Pirates of the Caribbean came out it makes you want to hurl. Now, that is just an opinion, but I do think that this certain overused theme is atrocious.
I even enjoy Hans more than someone like say Alex North, yet it is simply a fact that Alex North is a whole other league than him. It's simply a fact. And what's off putting is the legion of Zimmer fan boys raving "He's like the greatest composer EVERRR!!!" No, he is not, he can't hold a candle to proper composers like Williams, Goldsmith, Silvestri, Dolye, Debney, Delarue, Morricone, Poledouris. Even Elfman, who also came out of the pop genre has a way more impressive compositional palette than him.
Hans Zimmer a hack? Perhaps so--but The Lion King is different. Easily the best soundtrack of all time next to Star Wars, especially once you include the songs. Then it's a no-brainer.
