Super C (NES) Playthrough

- A playthrough of Konami's 1990 run-and gun action game for the NES, Super C.
I play through two loops of the game in this video. The second loop begins at 20:56.
A year has passed since Bill and Lance fought off Red Falcon's invasion force and saved the earth in Contra ( • Contra (NES) Playthrough ), but the aliens have returned! The creatures have taken over a military installation and body-snatched its soldiers, and the muscle-bound hero duo are once again called upon to wrench humanity back from the maw of oblivion.
Just remember to keep your eyes peeled! Attacking aggressively will require not just a pocket full of miracles and the ferocity of a wild jackal, but also a helluva lot of firepower and 1980s action-hero machismo.
Super C is the console adaptation of Super Contra, the arcade sequel to the first Contra game that had been released ten months prior. The NES game, which appeared in the spring of 1990, is strikingly similar to the original NES Contra, but that's not a complaint - it was exactly what everyone wanted from Contra 2, and Konami delivered in spades.
The run-and-gun action is as fluid and tight as before, the top-down stages are just as tense as the original's pseudo-3D bases that they replace, and all the classic weapons all make a welcome return.
The fire gun also got an upgrade. You can now charge it up, Mega Buster-style, for major splash damage.
The game is a fair amount easier than its predecessor, but it still provides a good challenge, especially in the later loops. The graphics are excellent, and the soundtrack is phenomenal. It lacks the epic bombast of the arcade version's sample-heavy music, but it goes all-out to make the most of the NES's limited audio capabilities. Super C dedicates more memory to digitized audio samples than any other official NES cart, and man, those bit-crushed orchestra hits sound awesome.
(In case anyone is interested, I've actually done a couple of arrangements of the first stage theme. You can find my NES version of it at • ♫THUNDER LANDING (Supe... , and the SNES version at • ♫THUNDER LANDING (Supe... )
Super C is indeed super, and it's an entirely worthy follow-up to one of the NES's best action games.

This game is like comfort food to me. I can always come back and have a great time!
true me too it was super amaizng time back in the old days i wanna back in time so bad it was super fun
Perfect sequel. They didn't mess with what worked, and enhanced it at the same time.
Indeed 👌They understood that if the formula is not broken, you don't need to fix it at all.
I like the body horror, alien aesthethics and such disturbing elements in this one. Giger must have been proud.
This has to be one of the greatest openings of any NES game ever. Rappelling out of a helicopter during a thunderstorm into an alien military base let you know right away that this wasn’t going to be one of those weird NES sequels that was completely different and let you down. This was going to be Contra…and it was going to be fucking super.
Although not as fondly remembered as the original, Super C is an awesome game and a great sequel! I think I actually played Super C before I did the original Contra.
Honestly, I tend to go back to this more than the original as well. The visuals were updated with better detail in a very subtle way which makes the overall presentation a better experience! Also the overhead view stages work better for me than the pseudo-3rd person stages in the original.
There's a version on the famicom where you can choose the default weapon, and there's even an OP fireball weapon in there
Looking back, it is crazy to realize some of the best Famicon/NES games came out AFTER the launch of the PC Engine and Mega Drive in japan. Between 1988 and 1992, there was a incredible amount of excellent releases. The trio Konami/Capcom/Sunsoft made their names around this time frame. Not to mention countless other smaller studios, that created classics that were still getting attention 3 decades after their inicial releases on Nintendo's finest.
My dad used to play the absolute hell outta this game, and years later I managed to beat it myself. Great times, great game.
Can't beat the classics, and super c is one of my faves
Best 8-bit Contra by far!
The sound test mode was super awesome offering a full medley of its entire soundtrack which I would have playing during homework and household chores.
Love that Super C is also on the NES Classic Edition
One of my favorite titles to play on the NES Mini. The farthest I've ever gotten was Area 4. Never actually beaten this game.
Didn't even know about the Archive version until several months ago.
It's Contra but with orchestra hits. Does life get any better?
This is my favorite Contra game. Wish it was longer and more difficult.
@der_Alptraum it's crazy I've heard some ppl say it's harder. As a kid I was able to beat it solo without the 10 man code, whereas I needed the Konami code in contra 😂
@@thecunninlynguist Yeah, I thought this was one much easier, too.
@@der_Alptraum I've heard people say that this one is much harder than the original Contra.
Yeah, Super C is pretty lenient than Contra.
The spread gun is especially effective in the top down stages.
As a kid I remember being terrified of this boss 5:30 because I was afraid of spiders 🤣🤣
A classic for sure :)
New happy memories unlocked ☺
Niesamowity gracz, ani razu nie stracił życia przez wszystkie poziomy, od dziś zacząłem w to grać i tracę życia często, contra super jest trudniejsza.
I played a lot.. contra, super contra... loved this 🎮
The superior NES contra
My childhood ❤
14:06 In the original arcade, THIS was the final boss. But this was where the NES port got some extras to make it all the more exciting, including more stages.
Eu tenho orgulho de ter zerado esse jogo
O que todo mundo conseguiu fazer na época. Terminar Battletoads era o que te destacava da gurizada na época :-)
the best contra game
This dude is a boss at Super C
There is not much else to say about this game other than the perspective change stages are now top down view instead. It's more of the same stellar, nonstop run n gun action, and another amazing hard pumping music got with it. If you loved the previous entry a lot, you will also love this equally classic sequel.
This game is one of my favorite games
90. time. golden time. ❤😢😢
Ah yes, it's Darkwing Duck 2, of course - or that's what bootlegs might lead you to believe. Jokes aside, this is a great game. One of the best run 'n' gun games on the system for sure. I've beaten it multiple times in the past. I find it much easier than the original Contra... but it's just about as fun for me!
Nope, is easier, but mostly for a better codification (jumps, movement and weapons are n't exactly good in the original one, even if is a better game than the original arcade version)
My personal Favorite Contra game!!
Has a few small, but nice additional Bells & Whistles to an already excellent Solid first entry!! Also, i really prefer the stage themes & OST in this game over the first Contra!!
In Retrospect, this probably would have also made a great OVA Anime series!!
By far, the best NES game of it's time ever released.
(at least in my opinion)
Timeless classic game
The Super C Out of Control Edition is a really nice hack of the japanese version of this game.
Ahhh mu childhood...from Türkiye greetings
Haven’t played this game in over 20 years but I can assure you with 100% certainty I know every single move, it’s actually the same exact thing you just did on the first level. Not 1 mistake. I remember as a kid being so OCD about this, it was such a challenge upon myself. I can destroy the chopper boss before any of the enemies jump down !
Contra had some bangin soundtracks
I could never beat this without a game genie
Clasico de Clasicos
Back when the name Konami actually meant something.
Don't like it quite as much as the first but it's still a really fun time!
I have played Japanese version of super Contra where
You can select area in title screen
You mean there's a stage select? Interesting. :)
@@Phantom.Gaming64 yep
My childhood love this game
they didn't have multiple alpha channels at the time so the player bullets had flicker to make them translucent, it's visible if you view this in slow speed
Classic. My dad and I played this and contra so much. Both this and contra nes are superior to their arcade versions. Better music, controls, and I'd argue graphics. Arcade super c/contra might be better bit wise but it's kinda ugly.
Lo mas impresionante es que con tan pocas gráficas lograron algo increíble...
This is the Contra I am familiar with as far as NES is concerned and I had beaten it once.
Up up down down left right left right baba start
The lightning 🌩
Two tricks for stage 3:
before kill the spider tank, put Closest to the right side of the screen, when the next part (earthquake) begins, you stay Go ahead of the holes.
The boss is easy, but can be easy when you shoot a little ahead show on this video (the shoot from the center ALWAYS go center). Jump to get more hits
Yep this game is a certified hood classic! That is all! 😂
Nice Video ! Sub & Big Like ! And love retro NES games !
Some of the sfx in this were featured in the Plug & Play version of Scramble
Like video juego super contra My favourite
I know S is spread but it'll always be Shotgun to me.
😂 My friends and I know it as "spray"!
We used to call it the spray gun. 😂
The boss at 19:15 reminds me of The Flintstones: The Rescue of Dino And Hoppy
aka GRAND DAD
The same bosses are in other contra games they should keep the bosses unique

There. I fixed it.
@@ghostup101Why do people keep adding the extra B A ?
@@killerb255 I forgot the period in between the B A. B A START.
Yeah, Konami really abused the ADPCM for this HAHAHA
It is very similar to the original contra
I Don't Understand Why Nintendo Changed Super Contra To Super C Can Someone Tell Me Why
Afaik, they were trying to avoid any public outcry over people assuming it was based on the Iran Contra scandal,
This is what a Contra game should look like
Was this colour corrected in any way? I recall Super C's colour palette made Bill's trousers look teal instead of blue, or am I remembering wrong?
Classic!!
Next play to "Super Contra 7" .NES (unlicented) this is good game :) bad is only music :P
Super juego👍👍
What console are you playing this in
Still a hard Contra game, but in my opinion this is easier than the 1st one, especially when you got a turbo controller, with just 3 lives still can beat the game with enough effort.
Super C is Contra 2 right?
Yes. 👍🏻
@@ghostup101 Ah, Japanese not naming normally their games...
Wow okay 😮
Too bad the sequel only gives you 10 extra lives for the code

Maybe the colonial marines had it all wrong with full armour and short controlled bursts? Shirts off and spread guns seem to work in this alien infestation.

Forget you guys man. Forget you. How the heck do you do it. Why do they have to make these games so damn unnecessarily difficult!!!!! 😡😡😡
