SNES Longplay - Donkey Kong Country

- 101% longplay (this game has an extra %, it's a tradition with the DKC games). All bonus rooms and KONG letters are shown.
There is a bit of a weird glitch involving the KONG letters that happens a few times throughout this longplay. Basically what happens is this: I get a certain number of KONG letters, I collect three animal tokens, I play an animal mini-game and then get taken back to the main level. When I get the next KONG letter, the game acts like I didn't get the previous KONG letters that I got before the animal mini-game! This glitch isn't game-breaking or anything, but it may confuse some people. So if you see the game acting like I didn't collect certain KONG letters, rest assured that I actually did get them.
This was recorded on an emulator (snes9x) with a USB controller in one sitting; no save states or re-recording tools were used. I died a bunch of times during the recording, but the deaths have all been edited out, so none of them appear in the video.
Lastly, it's probably best that I explain what I did from 1:04:21 - 1:04:32. In the level Oil Drum Alley, in one of its bonus rooms you have to get three bananas, then a barrel will appear. You then have to use that barrel to break the right wall to enter a bonus room within a bonus room (!). To do it properly you need to grab the barrel as soon as you can, then hold right while jumping. This is kind of tricky to pull off if you don't know what you're doing, so I thought I'd bring mention to it in case it confuses anyone.

Rare was indeed an incredible second party software developer for Nintendo. Chris and Tim Stamper were geniuses when they came up with the technology to create this game :D amazingly talented human beings.

Big part of my childhood here. Brings back so many good memories, especially with my mom.
Hearing the music and level sounds just takes me back to a better time in life. Life was carefree and fun. I'll never forget those days.
I remember getting this game in the sixth grade. That was such a difficult school year for me. I was bullied every day mercilessly, my teacher had a nervous breakdown and left the school before thanksgiving, and she was replaced by an absolute idiot. I would come home from another bad day, and once I finished my homework, put this game on and everything was ok. Such a great game, that was really an escape for me when I needed it.
I relate to you in a lot of ways as this was one of my most played games on SNES and aside from a teacher getting a nervous breakdown and being replaced everything else feels identical. I can't believe I turn 23 in just 9 days, hope you are still doing well to this day!

A fantastic game that gave me many wonderful moments and memories. I remember like yesterday that Christmas Eve in 1994 when you opened the Christmas present containing this game. El mejor momento de mi vida la pasaba jugando este juego
For a game released in 1994, the graphics are amazing. They more than hold up today.
David Miles definitely, they’re better than those on a lot of DS and Wii games even
Yes!!!! Glad to hear that about the DKC trilogy for the SNES's graphics, even conpared to seventh-gen Nintendo games!

long time ago I read in an article that in early 1994 Nintendo got some financial troubles, when this game was released it was an entire success and allowed them to continue developing the N64.

When this game came out, those pre-rendered graphics were really impressive. Even now, I think they still look beautiful.
Mathieu Pronovost Agreed! I was 11 years old in 1995 when this came out. Even today, this game looks gorgeous. It was way ahead of its time!
And what's MORE impressive, it was on a 16 bit console! THIS is the game that made SEGA felt stupid for chasing 32 bit at at the time.
The fact that even ps1 games kept using the graphics. Specifically final fantasy 7-9.
I totally agree. For 1994 (year I was born, by the way), it was revolutionary.
It gives the impression of it being rendered with 3d models in real time, but it's not. It's just sprites that are rendered from 3d models. And I don't even think the model files are stored on the cartridge, just the final sprites. The models were originally rendered by Nintendo or Rare and the sprites written into the game's ROM when it was compiled.
Good times, Good memories !! A masterpiece of a game !!
One of my favorite games from my childhood. Brings back good memories.
The graphics along with the music was the best part with Donkey kong country. The background view in each level alone is an incredible work of art. The beauty of the deep djungle, the sandy ocean sea floors, the cold shimmering crystal icy caverns. The music is stunning and perfectly balanced. Quiet and moody at times to let the feelings grasp, still paced enough to enhance your adrenaline rushes. The music alone can remind you why this game holds a special place in your heart, Donkey kong is yours and our's unforgettable childhood memories.

Heavy dose of nostalgia
Same omgg!!
We all have that game that brings us back. When I got the SUPER NES Flashback, I found more than one game I realized I never lost my affection for. Just curious Chris. How long did it take you to beat "Donkey Kong Country?" It can get really hard!
Donkey Kong Country fue el primer videojuego con graficos 3D de la historia. fue revolucionario. Este videojuego cambio la historia, marco un antes y un despues en la historia de los videojuegos.
So much nostalgia with this game, I remember playing this at an older friend's house as a little kid and watching Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.
Allllll righty then
I love Donkey Kong Country. The graphics were mindblowing and the soundtrack was ahead of its time. I think the level design often gets underappreciated. You can tell the designers put a lot of thought into every nook and cranny. I‘m a big fan of the minecart sections of the game. I‘ve decided to make my own Indie Game based on those minecart sections. Let‘s see how it goes.
Exactly what I thought.
I remember my ex used to play it cause when I brought the super nes back then this game came with so, she used to play all the time while I was at work and she would tell me how far she had gotten. She did beat the game though.
For a game that came out in 93/94 the soundtrack is very futuristic sounding to me. The bonus level music sounds kind of similar to some music you’d hear on the super Mario bros wii game. The graphics are very impressive too for a game from the early 90s. While I was team sega back then, my cousins had a Nintendo so my sister and I would visit them to play DK or Mario and they’d come to our house for Sonic and Ms Pac-Man lol. Now I’m 31 and team PlayStation all the way
Hey how did it go?
I would always play that game with my dad
Somehow i still get this desolated feeling when listening to the music in the water levels after all the years.
Yeah, it kinda feels a wee bit depressing.
one of the most mystifying feelings ive had recently was having that music play really low on my phone as i was trying to sleep and the window was slightly open so it kinda sounded like the music was coming from outside
You should hear the Mangrove Cove Underwater version.
Listen to the save room of resident evil one ! Thats where my sweet spot is (nearly the same tune). Fingernail pulling stuff.. or the soulblade intro.
The 90s were the golden age of gaming. Everything great about gaming today was laid out and perfected during the 90s. Though a lot of the stupendous 2D games (like this one) tend to get overshadowed by the incredible 3D games such as Super Mario 64 or Ocarina of Time. But despite the fact that 3D games encompass nearly every game today, 2D games still have their place. It’s like the theme of a game that is centered around guns. No matter how much it may be, there is always room for some kind of blade.
Ah, what a classic. A gaming god, too, finding all the hidden areas, and completing all the levels without dying. By the time you broke the maximum counter, I tallied how many more extra lives you obtained: 84.
I only casually played this game as a kid, it wasn't a huge part of my childhood, but for some reason I keep coming back to it as an adult. It means more to me now than it did then.
I thought that, as a Moroccan, I was the only one who feels nostalgic for these beautiful periods that I went through in my childhood, but the American people also share the same feeling with us, frankly I want to cry here, I watch this game especially the music, I don’t know why maybe because life no longer has a taste, greetings To you from Morocco.
Hey, I agree, we live in such a strange world, I felt it way too often, that the world lost a bit of taste, but keep the hope, sometimes you need to find a way to bring back the taste to life, like Ann Frank had said: Think of all the beauty around you, and be happy :-)
I'm only 13 and I got to grow up on original mario and donkey Kong on snes and a ps2 my life then was so much better then today and now I realise those moments are now.. gone and I just wanna go back and live life over and over again playing that same dk game everyday and no worries of school or anything just a great dad I love you dad and always will just promise me one thing tho that you'll never stop believing in yourself and and trying everyday I know it may be hard but just please do... This was the game that made the SNES to finally prevail over the Genesis and remain popular well into the PS1/N64 era. Quite possibly one of the greatest SNES games of all-time and easily in my personal top 10. The graphics, gameplay, music, etc. was well-made! I'm glad to say that I own this game on the Original SNES and the SNES Mini (built-in), because it is just that good!
Dude, that game was released in november 1994. Also in november 1994, the SEGA Saturn was released, SEGA's 2nd CD-based console, and after the 32-Bit-addon 32x it was SEGA's first real 32-Bit-console. .... Be honest: SEGA was on the next level already. The N64 didnt see the world before 1996 and couldnt keep up with Saturn and Playstation, it looks terrible ist most cases. When in 1998 SEGA's Dreamcast was released, the N64-games looked absolutely outdated, the Dreamcast had PC-standards at that time. I remember playing the N64 when it was brandnew and I couldnt believe how bad it was, although it was just released. Donkey Kong looked good, yes, but very late. And the SEGA Genesis did wipe the floor with the SNES with its CD-addon already, I just say "Final Fight CD".

It’s so amazing to see how all of our lives have been touched so deeply from this game. At the time I was just playing something because I was a kid but the memories that I have are priceless.
I’m drunk, looking back at my childhood and nostalgia is hitting me so bad that I wanna cry lol. Swear.
It's to know that this is coming to the SNES Online Service on the Switch.
As a child I remember seeing DKC on display at Costco, then Price Club, a few months after its release. The graphics were like nothing I'd ever seen before at the time. Nowadays nothing graphics-wise impresses me quite like that did.
Slipslide Ride is so pretty and well designed in my opinion(yes I like all the designs for maps but the music was pretty relaxing as well with the course)
Memories for me. Miss playing this with my dad back in 1994 when I was 9 years old. Wish I could go back.
I'm like you I miss my childhood days as well.

Before my 6th birthday, my dad asked me what present do I want? Being just a kid at the time, I didn't really know what I wanted. So my dad asked 'What about that Donkey Kong game?'

Wow, what a time capsule, nostalgia bomb. I remember playing this as a 6 year old boy and loving it so much.
Ah, my childhood... I loved this game so much. My favorite levels are usually the ice worlds.
I think I'm gonna start going back in life and start collecting all these old games and consoles
One of the greatest games ever made! Truly a 90's bliss! X3
This brought a smile to my face. I remember so clearly playing this with my brothers and dad
that was skillful. Almsot like a speedrun. Such quick movement and not even dying. Truly that Herd of Golden banas wa swell earned.
Ahh my childhood. I remember playing this game as a kid with my mom and my brother back in the day. I think this was one of our favorite games to play. Good times that sadly don’t happen anymore.
Awesome video by the way. You played and beat this game like a pro in my opinion.
Some of my most cherished childhood memories. I’ll never forget those times when life was much simpler
The music and sound effects take me back
please never delete this, so many good memories.
Nostalgia 😢 melhor época da minha vida! ❤

Cranky: "I did it less than one hours."
Speedrunner: "Challenge accepted."
