    I think the concept of Shiva being about caring for the mourners is so beautiful. Awesome sense of community, and not something I personally have ever felt at a wake or repast. Hanna when someone passes on ,you need people and to go slowly,shiva I think is a wonderful custom.In Ireland it is called a wake ,people call pray,eat ,drink .In olden times there were woman called ( I am not sure of the spelling) keeners,they would cry and cry ,then the family would cry or perhaps sing.Men would smoke from clay pipes,that would be broken.In city’s nowadays there would not be support like we have here in the country.Food is brought to the house by friends and neighbours , they also direct traffic,provide parking in a field,stay at position to stop or divert traffic.It happens automatically so no stress to the family.I hope I am not boring you Hanna.

    Seeing your Shiva customs is good to learn from. I was reviewing that, and The Chosen, and the autobiographical story of Judy Blume. What I saw in both of those is how some families do Shiva when their adult children stray from the Jewish faith; whether by refusing to follow the family customs, or marrying a non-Jew. And it is a grief. As is a lot of other life things; losing a job, house fires, break-ups/divorce........do you do Shiva for those things too?

    It doesn't sound quite right to say that I enjoyed this vlog when your husband is grieving his father, but I did. Death is something which people in my culture don't seem able to talk about and use words like 'passed away', or 'we lost our father' rather than saying someone has died. Death isn't really discussed. I find the way that you mark a loved one's death to be profoundly moving.

    I know that this already happened but as you know I am catching up. I am so sorry for your loss and the difficult time your husband and family went through. As you know my husband passed away at 54 and we also sat shiva. I also had a lot of questions for rabbi since I had never experienced this. My in-laws and I were so grateful for friends and family stepped up to help us through this painful time. It seems you have a wonderful community that is very present for each other. May I ask if your neighborhood is primarily orthodox? In Maryland where I am from and my husband is buried there is a very large Jewish community and certain areas are orthodox. In Az very small Jewish population but ironically where I moved in my neighborhood we have a very large pocket of orthodox which I love!

    • @jaroffireflies
      @jaroffireflies  3 роки тому +5

      I am so sorry for your loss. My neighborhood has a lot of Jews, but we are definitely a minority here. Because there is an orthodox shul here, many jews move here for that so its more than a lot of places for sure but not like the neighborhoods in New York or New Jersey that are almost entirely Jewish.

    In my family I knew as much as could understand from a young age about death. We would go the the funeral, reception and a small explanation of death, then more as I got older. Being young it was more common not to have young children at weddings so I never went to one till I was about 16. As I got older I thought that it was odd to know more about death than weddings but it helped as I grew older. My family is mostly Christian.
