- Have you experienced the speed wobble on your urban arrow bakfiets or box cargo bike? Here are the things I check on the cargo bike before adjusting the fit and position of the ride.

Super informative! Thank you for sharing.
So helpful. Thank you. I have an amazing local bike shop but it’s nice to be able to check things for myself at home. Also, I’m the only urban arrow owner in my area, so if my bike guy doesn’t know how to fix something he relies on videos like yours to give him a helping hand.
Your video is great! Thanks. We managed this once on one of our Bullitts. Trying to go too fast, had a pilot up front and no one around....it was fun. The uneven pavement started the shimmy, slowed the bike down then resumed the craziness. We bought a bunch of the steering dampers ($115 US) but never mounted them on any of our bikes. If you are thinking of buying a long bike......buy it! They are great fun for the whole family and friends......and everyone gets used to riding. All aboard!
Super helpful, Thank you so much!
Super helpful thank you
Never had the problem before, but last week it happened. Thank you for the content, this is super helpful!
Glad it helped!
Interesting headset, I didn't know about that one, thanks!
Super helpful! Will go through your check on my UA Family. It started oscillating when going downhill - but only with charge in front, funny enough. always at around 30kmh or more.
Glad it was helpful!
Wonderful and extremely useful video! Was able to solve our UA Family's wobble following these steps (it was the front headset, which makes sense considering the cobble-stone and up to 50kmh downhill section followed by hard braking in my daily communte). Will think of upgrading to the Cane Creek headset along the way.
Fantastic!
I was having this exact problem with an Urban Arrow I had on loan from Outback Bikes here in Atlanta. Every time I went over 15mph, especially downhill, the front wheel would start going bonkers. The short-term fix that worked for like a charm for me was to just loosen my grip on the handlebars. With a loose grip, I never saw the problem again.
Thanks so much for this video! Helps a ton since our UA dealer is 2.5 hours away by car!
Glad it helped!
Thank you!!! We've had our UA 2 weeks and have had this problem several times already when things are bumpy or when going more than 20mph. I went through your checklist and most of the bolts we're loose.
I know you're working for Tern now but a video of what you check routinely for preventative maintenance and how frequently would be awesome!
I'm working on a general cargo bike one.
All the things listed in this video, plus brake pads and tire wear. 🙌🏼
Some nylon insert self locking nuts or a drop of thread lock should also help. Stopped the side stand bolts on my Tern coming undone with threadlock
Great episode. I would also point people in the direction of the Urban arrow speed damper too.
I've seen a lot of premature headset bearing wear with those so I avoided using them, but it probably depends on use cases.
@@CargoBikeLifecom I suppose it puts force on one side of the headset. Never thought of that
Yay! So glad I found your channel! I'm in Miami Florida so I'm pretty sure I'm the only Urban arrow within 800 MI! I do see some of the other cargo bikes with the wooden chariots up front for dog or human kiddos. Mine was mainly for dog and car replacement. Great to see some relevant material I can refer to. Having my local bike shop gent to a major checkup overhaul and clean up since it's been sitting dormant for a bit. Can't wait to get that baby back all cleaned up and ready to resume my car light lifestyle :-) I saw the cover for 200 bucks! Have you a less expensive option I know I can get a motorcycle cover but I don't know which one I can get that's 8 ft long!
I'm in Tampa and ride my UA daily with the kids...a mere 280 miles from you :) I get stopped almost daily with people/drivers asking me about or commenting on the bike. My wife likes to bike behind me and watch the open mouths of drivers in opposite direction as they see our giant Shamu flying down the roads
I had a bike (not a cargo bike)with a shimmying problem. Replacing the front tyre was the cure.
wife is happy. thanks for all the info 💯💯
You bet
one of the arrows at work has an issue with the steering whereby the wheel now turns 90° to the right and not enough to the left. is this adjusted from the top headset? would you be able to give some advice please. Thanks
Looks up Bullitt front cargo bike. Gets this as the 3rd result...
Thanks for the video! Do you know of a compatible front suspension fork for the Urban Arrow family?
Due to the design of the bike frame and box, a suspension fork doesn’t fit.
Interestingly I never have this on my OG Workcycles bakfiets (the Van Andel's build version). Even when (embarrassingly) my headset is loose or my ball joints are getting worn and I'm bombing downhill at 20+mph. And we almost never have people having this problem with the KR8. Something about the geometry of the UA (fork angle? Rake?) makes it more susceptible to this issue than other bakfietsen.
It’s hard to say. I’ve heard of people with issues on most brands and believe it more has to do with build quality and riding experience
You didn't mention and I didn't see you even checking the "run out" on the front rim to check for bad/loose front wheel bearings or if the rim is bent. Or if you have some loose spokes or broken ones in the front rim.
That is a very uncommon thing. Sure it can happen but the speed wobble mentioned in this video will fix 98% of folks concerns.
@@CargoBikeLifecom It's still something to check for and to tell people about.
My wheel and handle bars are out of alignment on my urban arrow cargo. Is it a case of adjusting the swing arm to align them? I can't find any answers on the Internet.
Thankfully it is an easy adjustment at the stem.
Have someone stand at the front wheel to hold it straight, loosen the two bolts on the side of the stem (looks like a neck), straighten the handlebar, tighten. ua-cam.com/video/wH9hqY86CQQ/v-deo.html
@@CargoBikeLifecom you mean loosen the bolts at the headset of the handle bars not the headset at the front wheel?
@@stephenmcelligott1996 correct. To get straight steering you need to be adjusting the stem at the handlebars
@@CargoBikeLifecom Great it worked perfect. After that some trial an error to get it just right. Thank again. 😊
@@CargoBikeLifecom I was meaning to ask you if you've any videos on adjusting the brake tension on these urban arrows? Mine are soft to squeeze that I have to squeeze them pass the usually two finger rule. Is the brake tension on them different to the classic V brake system and is adjusting them difficult? 🤔
Update: I disassembled the headset and the lower bearing assembly was damaged. Replaced it and test rode it to find it is good now. Thank you.
Was there a screw in the frame that "tightens" the bearing? I see too often that blowing apart the headset.
@@CargoBikeLifecom no mine is a standard. Headset. What happened i did not clean and grease them in the construction process. Got overlooked.
@@CargoBikeLifecom photos.app.goo.gl/ejFqS7qboMD1A8Z1A. Its my fist construction and its mostly repurposed materials. It's still evolving as I take time to experiment with it and other "stuff"..

@@CargoBikeLifecom if you look close you can see the rear wheel has gone from a 24"" to an electric 26"" I welded in gussets to accomadate it. You can see something sticking out of the top of the head set nut. That is a tow hitch locking pin that I extended to pass through the loops I welded to the fork legs allowing me to disable the front wheel . lock it. Im looking to do the rear too. It has a motion sensing loud alarm and GPS .
