The Short Torso Belt Problem is the most relatable thing in the world, omg. It's so hard to explain to people why belting dresses and blazers and such doesn't really work for me. I LOVE the look of a belted blazer, and am forever bitter that it just looks weird and awkward on me. Great point about ribbed items somehow being less flattering! I'd never really thought about it before, but you're right. Next time I'm thinking about buying a ribbed item I'll try sizing up.
Your point about skin is great. I’m black and I don’t wear brown colors that are too close to my skin color. So no brown bodysuits, tops, dresses. It makes me look top heavy and it also highlights my short torso because the color blends right into my skin. So when everybody was rocking the trend where you wear clothes that are supposed to be your nude color, that did not work for me at all. I remember when I went to banana republic to buy all these brown basic bodysuits and I couldn’t figure out why they looked so weird on me. And then figured out it was because the eye would be drawn directly to my short waist because whatever I was wearing on the bottom would catch your attention first, since the brown color was ~invisible~ to the eye.
Love this! I always thought something is not working when I shop for clothes… when I follow the trend my body looks so not proportionate but when I shops for my body regardless of the trend I love how I look… I started noticing as a tall, curvy, short torso long leg person, I’ve had to make up my own rules for looking good. Thanks for representing us!
I think everyone should have a thin belt in black tan white and brown with gold hardware and a thicker belt in all those colours with gold hardware then a few with silver hardware too and a raffeta belt or straw like belt and wide stretch belt with a statement buckle then you should be covered for any outfit once you have those then you can add to them starting off a belt collection I'd start with the slim belts first look great with pants and skirts and dresses too 🥰
Thank you for this video! I also think hair color and length make a huge difference when considering an outfit. So many times I pin outfits that look perfect on a woman with shoulder-length, blonde hair (like you!) but then when I go to recreate that look with my long brunette hair… the contrast is not there and therefore doesn’t pop in the same way. So, I try to consider colors and pieces that contrast and compliment my coloring/hair length too. It’s so much!
Love these tips! Wearing a belt that is the same color as the pants/skirt is one of the best tricks I’ve learned bc a different colored belt highlights the short torso while using the same color creates of an illusion
Although if you're short from shoulder to waist, wearing a belt that matches your top can give the illusion of a longer length in that area. I'm short from shoulder to waist but have an extra long rise and long legs. It looks more proportional for me to make my upper torso look longer. A belt the same color as my skirt or pants can make my boobs look like they're sitting on top of my belt.
Great points!! Especially the skin being part of the colour/contrast of the entire look! I'm short waisted (not short torso) with pear like bottom half - and now i know why i hate jeans, and absolutely nothing fits me in the shops!!! Many thanks for your vids 👏👏👍🙏
Jules! This is one of your very BEST videos! Everything here is so spot on….and i finally FINALLY decided to measure my rise to make it easier to shop! Certain pants/jeans brands in particular certainly do fit better with regard to pocket placement in back, and providing enough stretch at waist to fit smooth! Keep doin what you do! You put so much into the detail in your videos, it really helps so much!! :)
Thank you for great tips. All your videos are really helpful. About ribbed material, I agree they make you look bigger, lol. I once wore a ribbed top and it was just horrendous, I was so conscious the whole time. Personally, I steer clear from ribbed.
Thanks for emphasizing the hands, always forget those. And the vertical body-shape, absolutely important, which is why we ate here . Thanks, your videos really helped me a lot.
Your comment about your skin acting as essentially another color block...I understand now why I don't like to wear black tops! I dye my hair black because I love that look for me, but I really dislike black on my torso. I like black pants when styled right, though. I feel so much more informed. What a way to start my day.
You're lucky to find a seamstress or tailor who can make that kind of alteration. It's the most difficult alteration to make in a tailored garment. It's so difficult that the professional advice has always been to pass up any item that needs a shoulder alteration. They say to fit the shoulder areas first when you buy something, because the rest of the garment is much easier to alter.
Im in my 40s and apparently with age, the spine compresses so now I suddenly have a short torso. Prior to my spine compressing, I was build like the typical 90s runway model, 5'10" with long limbs and broad shoulders, but now I'm 5'8" and a short torso however I still have the very broad shoulder and long legs and arms lol its a struggle to find clothes that make me look good. I do have a well defined hourglass shape so I like to highlight it however with my long legs it always looks awkward. I can't wear loose fitting tops either because of my very broad shoulders, Tops that fit my shoulders (eg shirts) are extremely loose on my torso so I look frumpy. Im very happy I stumbled upon your videos, you give such great advice, thank you.
Very practical advice. I love that you talk the more technical points and don’t rely on shopping At expensive places to look good. I didn’t figure out until late in life that I gave a king torso. Now I’ll work on the neck🤗.
Wow thank you for such a great video!! These small details make a huge difference now that I think about it. Like dressing up your hands, thinking of your skin as another color/component of your outfit, balancing out your proportions by considering your neck, ankles, and feet. I’m going to experiment!
Yasss 👏👏👏 So glad you made these videos!! Everything I’ve always ask myself you’ve answered! 28 and finally knowing how to dress myself properly! Haha I’m apple shape with short torso and long legs and I didn’t put two and two together until I saw your videos! I was only dressing apple but it still didn’t look good. Soo glad you are making this kind of content and it’s well put together too! Thank you!! ❤️❤️😍
One exception to taking up at the shoulder is if the dress or top has bust darts. You just have to make sure the darts don't get pulled up too high. The point (or curve with princess seam which is badically two darts conbected) should point towards apex of the bust.
Thanks for the advices, it helps so much. I have just a tought about the ankles covering, I think it depends on the overall view, sometimes its better to hide sometimes no, On me its better on me when i dont hide them, specially if its with a heel, its so flattering and i get compliment on it so much, In my view when i looked on you with heel and ankle not hided its so much flattering on you also. Thats from my view, try to take others friend opinions on that, because it really look good on u that way. One thing that i noticed also and that i didnt see mentionned in any video its that, even if the legs are tall, there is something pretty commun on short torso person, its the length between the end of the pubis and the floor ( yes the floor or end of foot), this length its on the short side on us, even legs are tall, i dont know if i did explain that good. On all your picturs when you wear heel, this length its increased so it gives more harmony to the overall body, and we dont notice short torso
Hi rise jeans work for me and my shorter torso. The smallest part of my waist is at my belly button, not below. I pair high rise pants with bodysuits that have interesting necklines or that draw the eye up. I also make sure I am in tip top shape with no rolls or belly flab. With a short waist I basically cannot afford to get pudgy.
Hey! Thank you for all you do! Very helpful! I love your bracelet but the link says it’s unavailable I think. Would you know where else I could find a similar one? Thank you!
The tip about the soft belt - it was a lightbulb moment for me…because of my rectangular shape I’m always trying to add a belt but then I usually take it off….now I realize that a soft belt is the answer because I have a dress with a narrow fabric belt the same colour as the dress and I lower it a bit to balance my torso and love it. Now the challenge to find belts like that. Any suggestions?
Hi, I have a short torso/long legs vertical body shape and I like to wear high waisted jeans. They fit great except for top part, they fit on the legs and fit on the waist but they still keep slipping down and it's getting baggy on the booty. So I guess the top part is to long for my hips and booty. I tried wearig a belt but, like you said in the video, wearing a belt hurts my ribs and hips. It's SOOO hard finding pants that fit!
Im in a fashion slump because I am.a short toro and short legs. I have the extra weight in the middle due to menopause so im thicker in my midsection to the point its.difficult to keep pants on without contantly having to use a belt which then adds more bulk to my waistline 😢
Ugh I got pepper bras last year because they market to small chested people, but I’m really wide set and have a short torso and it just gives NO lift at all and just has been so unflattering. Wish I saw this video a year ago 😂
Short torso, short legs, long arms and fingers but 5'6" tall! Nails are a challenge. My hands do too many things to have them. Polish lasts maybe 1 day.
I look best with high waisted tighter fitting pants due to having an hourglass shape and shapely legs… But it bothers me how hard it is and how few pants are made to actually have a waist (e.g. the top part is smaller, which opens to a bigger hipline then gets small again for the legs)… a lot of pants designers do the smaller legs, open for the hips, and then oop! We’re done! 😭 Even for higher rises! It always makes my stomach bigger… Though I did find some zara pant knock offs on aliexpress which fit as described above they’re not nearly as common as I wish they were!!! I also was recently thinking about how pointless my belly button piercing is because of how I go exclusively high waisted haha 😭 Didn’t know what worked for my body back then lol. everyone had belly piercings in the 2010’s!!!! 😭
*Smaller* pockets? No way! Fake pockets are cruel, and undersized pockets are teasing. I’ll sacrifice my butt looking good to the general public for a useful pocket.
Let me know if there are any links I forgot to include in the description box! I'll add them here 😊

Belts are so tricky! I remember when thick waist belts were trendy. No wonder I had body images issues
@@JulesBeth thick belts are the worst on us short torso ladies!

Totally agree the pocket thing
Shoulder tailoring was the one which saved so many of my issues. I came across this hack very accidentally but it changed my style ever since.

I just realized why I hate wrap dresses: tailoring. They're always waaaaay too revealing at the bust on my short-waisted self. Damn.
Bingo! Easy fix for a tailor (luckily!)
Yea, I always have to wear a camisole under them.
When you have a short torso and are getting older, you become waistless.I am becoming discouraged about what to wear.
