  • In this video, I'm talking the Canon RP. This is a sub $1,000 full frame mirrorless camera and I've been saying that it's the right camera for a lot of shooters since it came out. But I'm done with this camera now. I'm selling it and switching to a new camera. So, I'll talk about why I'm getting rid of the camera, what I'm replacing it with and give my thoughts on whether the RP might be a good fit for you or not.

    I have the RP and the R6. I bought the R6 mostly for the video capabilities and it's true that it's in another league but for amateur photography I'd still recommend the RP and a good piece of glass for the same price that the R6 and the kit lens

    I own an rp and really like it a lot. I have been toying with possibly picking up an r6 recently, but keep stopping myself from pulling the trigger.
    In the mean time, I still love it paired with my 24-105 f4, 70-200 f4, ef 50 1.8, and Samyang ef 85 1.4.
    It’s definitely great quality for the price.

    I started with the RP, then moved to the R for a while, and now am on the R6. I could not be happier than I am with the R6. Autofocus, dynamic range, functionality, all of it is leagues better than the RP and R. I am so very pleased with its performance AND the images it produces. Congrats on getting the R6 soon!

      Why did you choose the r6 over the r5

      @@Diegoj2121 for me: first of all, the R5 is an amazing camera, but I don’t need 45 MP and I don’t need 8K, which are the main differences. And for me, the extra cost of the camera as well as extra memory cards and hard drives for the bigger files didn’t make sense for features that I don’t need. I actually did a full comparison of the R5 and R6 if you’re interested: ua-cam.com/video/cUEJfn6ZfyI/v-deo.html

      @@JustinMyersPhoto absolutely! They are capable cameras as well, but I agree the R6 is a step up in several very key areas. And my camera rig is used mostly for portrait photography but use it for practically everything outside of that. @@Diegoj2121 I’d agree with Justin. I don’t have much need for 45mp or 8k video. For portraits, events/wedding photography, it would be a bit overkill. The extra hard drive space required would be unnecessarily cumbersome to deal with.

    I love my RP too, but I think I'm going to get the R6. It does everything I need for now, but it's battery life is terrible (I'll use 3 in a day pretty easily) and it can not keep up with anything moving faster than walking speed.
    I love the size and weight and how compact it is with the 50mm (16mm also) and the 24-105 kit lens. Just have to decide if I need both cameras, or do I sell the M50 and associated lenses instead, which is what I use when I travel light. I'm keeping my 70D because the resale value is so low ($200 or less lately) and it is still a very good camera for things that move quickly. Just old. The R6 is calling.

    @commentsonlychannel7800 2 роки тому +2

    Future reference. Because you will have sync speed issues with any camera, If you get a High-speed sync (HSS) off camera flash you can shoot at any shutter speed….
    Entry level “Godox AD200 Pro” has HSS. Also they have speed lights that have HSS that are cheaper but wont work well in harsh sunlight outdoor shooting

    • @JustinMyersPhoto
      @JustinMyersPhoto  2 роки тому +1

      I appreciate your comment! HSS actually only helps in shooting above the camera’s flash sync speed. Shooting HSS means the camera will actually take multiple exposures, though only exposing part of the frame each time, while the flash actually goes off several times in sequence. That’s why a flash can’t output as much power in HSS mode and that may be why you feel like they aren’t working well in sunlight.
      But because of the way that HSS works, the flash and the camera’s shutter have to be much more well synced in HSS mode, since they have to expose the scene correctly several times for each individual frame. Shooting in this mode would only lead to way more potential issues.
      However, I was shooting the RP within its maximum flash sync speed range. The maximum flash sync speed of a camera is the fastest speed at which a camera exposes the whole sensor at one time. Because it isn’t exposing sections of the camera in sequence, as it would with higher shutter speeds (which necessitates HSS), the exact sync of HSS isn’t necessary. As long as the flash goes off sometime between when the shutter first exposes the sensor and when the shutter closes, the whole frame will be illuminated evenly (this why flashes have front and rear curtain sync options), meaning there should not be a scenario in which part of the frame is black or appears to have bars across it.
      The fact that the RP does have instances with “black bars” across it, means that it will randomly decide to expose the sensor in parts rather than the whole sensor at once, even within it’s maximum flash sync speed. If the RP had a fully mechanical shutter option, it’d be an easy way to fix it, but it only has EFCS, or electronic first curtain shutter, and it’s not the most reliable one, unfortunately. Like I said in the video, that is not an issue in most situations, until you start using flash.
      Also, the sync speed issue is not something that is common to all cameras. Again, any camera that has a fully mechanical shutter (which is most cameras) automatically alleviates the issue because they just physically open and shut and are programmed to open completely when they are at or below the maximum flash sync speed of the camera.
      Hope that helps! 👍

    I have both an RP and an R5. I use the RP more than the R5, because I love the small form factor. The RP + RF24-105f4L is so small and easy to carry, and takes good photos. My R5 is mostly attached to my RF100-500L. The RP does not match up with this large lens so well, the R5 is much better.

      @@JustinMyersPhoto I typically do travel photography, landscape, and product photos. I also enjoy photographing flowers with my RF100-500L, as I discovered after I got it that this lens is fantastic for flower photos. I often take photos in low light conditions, and this is my main reason to buy the R5. I wanted the IBIS, low light performance and higher dynamic range of the R5. I chose the R5 over the R6 because I now and then print a landscape photo in large format, and I need all small details to be sharp and well visible. I often carry only the RP if I know that the lighting conditions will be good and easy. I do only stills, no video.

    • @JustinMyersPhoto
      @JustinMyersPhoto  2 роки тому

      It’s possible. I wouldn’t think so though. It’s much more vital for the shutter to be perfectly in sync for HSS. Ya, I didn’t want to spend a ton of time on that particular topic, because it could easily be its own whole video. So like I said, flash sync problems is the main issue that I have personally been having with the shutter in the RP.
      I did mention a few times though that this camera is not meant for action and that I’m not an action shooter. I could probably count the number of times I’ve shot with a shutter speed (on any camera) fast enough to cause issues with EFCS on one hand, so that’s not something that regularly affects my shooting.

      @@rapolo01 okay cool. So, a few suggestions: I’m not sure if this is what you were saying, but faster shutter speed won’t help lowlight performance. 1/4000 or 1/8000 max shutter speed would be for super bright, direct sunlight or something. As far as lowlight/high ISO performance goes, the R6 is definitely way better, the a7C is better, but not crazy better like the R6. Autofocus on the a7C is about in the same level as the RP (it’s Sony’s older AF system, just with eye AF added to video, which the RP already had), R6 is noticeably better though.
      If you are shooting a lot of talking head and stuff in dark spots though, I would suggest using the money to invest in a solid lighting setup, that’s going to make a much bigger difference in image quality than a newer camera.

    I have RP for more than one year. It is not just low frame burst, but stubbornness of RP on fast moving objects. It is worse than Canon 500D I have and use since 2009. RP is just true amateur. still life, family camera. Will do social, event reportage as well. But it is not a canine camera :) . It is small, light weighted, which is again good for amateurs and aged photogs. As for L RF lenses on RP.... Waste of money, IMO. RP and cheap, light RF STM lenses are meant to be together. At least RF STM lenses are just as good as L EF lenses, from what I could see in real use. For anything serious I trust, more confident with 5D MKII. I have no problem to use it on moving objects and 500D, 5D MK II batteries capacity are not just superior to any Canon R camera batteries, they gave adequate low charge warning. While RP... it just dies with way too short or no any warning at all. Due to miserable battery and no low charge indication not only I have to keep spare battery all the time, I have to keep RP on ECO mode and it just soo slow to wake up. I miss BIF with RP often. I could hear birds approaching or I spot them. But by the time RP wakes up, birds are gone... Would I update to anything else from RP? Not likely. It is hard to beat STM RF lenses for price and performance. And I just have no interest to lug around something like R, R6 and so on. I checked A7C and its EVF is just not matching A7C's premium price tag.

      @@GalaxyDust I see. Well, one thing I would say to keep in mind is that the 90D is a DSLR on the EF mount. It’s a great camera and there are plenty of EF lenses available, but it has reached the end of its development cycle. So going forward, there aren’t going to be any new lenses, accessories, etc. developed for it. All the new developments are going into mirrorless.
      So, if you were looking at buying the cameras now, I would say that it would make more sense to look at the R6 and R7 or even R10.
      However, if you’re not planning to buy until next year, I would wait on the decision because the prices may be different and there may even be different cameras to consider

    I'm currently in the dilemma and your video I think is the best describing it. I'm in a position to buy a new camere, and my budget will allow me to get either:
    A. EOS RP + RF 50mm f1.2 L/RF 15-35mm f2.8 L/RF 24-70mm f2.8 L+ 16mm f2.8
    B. EOS R6 + RF 50mm f1.8 + RF 16mm f2.8 + RF 85mm macro
    My budget is very limited and most likely need to stick with those set ups for at least 1 more year before I can get more bonus wage from my company.
    My usage: family event photography, pictures of very fast moving kids, and travel photography
    And...
    One important thing is that.. I realized lately that I'm actually a good storyteller as my friends and family can attest to. So I'm starting to study and get into VIDEOGRAPHY. I think I'll be good in it, just need a camera where I can grow into for a long time during my VIDEOGRAPHY journey.
    Which should I go for?

      To be honest, I’m a bit confused by your budget. The first kit option you listed with the RP is roughly an $8,300 USD kit, but the second option with the R6 is only a $3,600 USD kit.
      So, I have two recommendations:
      If for whatever reason those kits, exactly how you have them listed, are the only two options, I would definitely recommend going with the first option of the RP with the L lenses. The RP is still a capable camera and those nice lenses will be more important.
      However, if the budget of option A is what you want to spend, I would say take option A, switch out the RP for the R6 and the 50mm f1.2L for the 50mm f1.8 and you’re at the same price point. Then you have an extremely capable camera with some great lenses as well as some solid prime lenses.
      Ultimately though, if you are planning on spending either amount on buying new kit like that, I would highly suggest you rent the cameras and lenses before buying. That way, you can get a feel for what works best for you personally.
