Most often, it is green bananas that causes constipation, while the very ripe ones have a laxative effect.

I read that bananas contain a lot of sugar and can cause ear infections? Does that sound possible/probable to you? And can you offer an amount that would be appropriate and how often for my 140 lb Bullmastiffs?

Bananas have natural sugars and starches. For reference, a medium-sized banana has 14 grams of sugar and about 6 grams of starch. Too many could also prevent ear infections from getting better.
Medium to large dogs should only receive half of a normal-sized banana a couple times a week.

Yes, sugar and starch is "natural" but that does not make bananas good for carnivores. Suggesting that a medium sized dog benefits from half a banana twice a week is just a random idea and very unlikely to be a good one. @@DogsNaturallyMagazineDNM
