I will never forget the sheer terror from hearing the caretaker for the first time. I feel that it can be hard to make video game enemies actually intimidating, yet to this day, the caretaker is one of the most imposing enemies I've ever fought.
The best part is that you see it during the mission. It's something you seemingly can't do anything to so you just walk past it until your mission is almost over. All of this foreshadowing revealed in mission controls final line, telling you to get ready for a fight. You take down the forcefield over this massive robot wondering if you'll have to kill it when it suddenly roars to life. "The caretaker has activated defenses, deal with it before it reduces you to cinders." It reveals that you have to kill this thing in a wonderful way with perfect foreshadowing and beautiful hostile sound design.
The industrial sabotage missions are by far the best missions in the game, and I swear, some times I play them just to hear the Caretakers sounds, this sound in particular, frequently administering dopamine. God I love the sound design here.
Careraker is the biggest machine in drg, and its neat to see the reasoning why stuff sounds the way it does, and yes, you did a good job in making it sound scary.
My favorite sound in the game. always playing this mission without headset, but with my gigantic speakers, just to feel that bass and vibration. i really feel like im in a huge cave defeating a machine.
I would LOVE to see a breakdown of the sounds of either the Oppresor, the Hiveguard Dreadnought, or the Bulk Detonator, I LOVE how those absolute units sound like Kaijus
You did fantastic word. odds are in years and years to come that sound will still live rent free in my mind. 1:41 that sound of the caretaker still gives me mad spine tingles, its loud. but loud for a reason that is satisfing and rightfully scary. like you truely have woken something you shouldn't have. now you are going to have to fight or pay for the consequences its not just the kind of boss that appears. its the kind of boss you gotta earn the right to fight.
Absolutely love how a lot of the robotic/mechanical sounds in the game have that animal-like quality you describe! The rival tech especially, but even some of DRG’s tech seem to have that expressive/vocal quality to some degree (the PGL always sounds like it’s grunting to me haha) It adds so much character compared to more generic “tech”/weapon sounds, I love it :D
DRG has some of my favorite sounds across the board. Most of my phone alerts are DRG sounds. The menacing roar of an oppressor in the distance is truly a spectacular moment every time it happens. The sheer terror of hearing the screech of a grabber and instantly sweeping the entire cavern to find the Gods forsaken thing. Even just the small sounds of Steeve enjoying some pets is wonderful. Among all that incredible work, The Caretaker really stands out. Excellent work sir, rock and stone ⚒️
dude! i absolutely loved the sound from the first time i heard it, glad i get the chance to tell you this directly, the caretaker sounds absolutely lovely! so lovely that it genuinely motivates me to play that mission just to hear it! 10/10 job with that enemy specifically
First time I encountered the caretaker I was absolutely in awe. The sound design is incredible, you are very good at your job and I absolutely love your work.
I remember listening to its hurt sound and thinking 1. It sounds like an error sound 2. It sounds hurt of course 3. It sounds like its loading up something new Almost like not only is it hurt, its confused as to WHY its hurt, in a "this should not be happening" kind of way, and then compensates by widening its defenses.
I can completely connect with what you are hearing. Even though I probably din't plan from the start that those should be the feelings, that's what it ended up like sounding like. It's funny how subconscious sound can be and how much you can connect with sounds, without even really being able to articulate what a certain sound feels like. Thanks for putting my sound into real words :)
I LOVE the sound of the caretaker!!! It just sounds so overpowering and massive. Really really good work there, ty for adding some more atmosphere to this fantastic game!
You nailed the essence of the caretaker. Its large, its dangerous, and it has a job to do. I dont think the fight would be anywhere as enjoyable without the huge "Set of lungs" that you made for it. Its a very enjoyable and immersive fight, especially woth such a start-up to the conflict. I salute you! o7
So gooood! I'm finishing up my second degree at Berklee before entering the industry and when UA-cam recommended this video I just knew I had to take a listen to be better equipped for the future. Thank you for sharing :) really impressed with the scraper decision!
I was hoping for the final death sound as well, but the in between wave sound was super interesting too! I would have never guessed that the "weeOooooo" sound was an autotuned tiger noise lol!! I really love these!! Amazing work!
This is exactly the content I want. I'm super interested in detailed and impressive sound design like this, but UA-cam doesn't understand what I want and usually just gives me music tutorials? Definitely subscribing
I was smacking my head against my desk for quite some time figuring out how this exact sound was made. Thank you! Amazing sound design with a unique approach, very characteristic sound!
listening to this actually makes me want to start getting into sound design, I've actually made a few sound effects myself but watching this makes me want to make more and more!
Always love these explanations from you! Looking forward to whatever you work on next, you've made some *iconic* sounds for DRG, even after 500+ hours of playing I haven't grown tired of any of them, haha.
I love the scary sounds of the Care Taker and the patrol bots I think they're called. There's this black metal song by Deathspell Omega called Wings of Predation, where a certain part reminds me of the patrol bots. I'm sure no-one cares, but every time I listen to the song I think of that goddamn patrol bots, so I thought I'd share it.
Towards the end you talk about experimenting to get to the final point. Since you're working on Void Crew now, I wonder if we can see different experiments and ideas that then lead to a final sound
Probably my personal style you can hear. The music on bandcamp is something I made around 2002. So I'm a tad bit older now :) I also made all the music for a recently released game called "void crew". The music is not DRG, but a lot more DRG than my personal stuff.
I love seeing and hearing this! I think it's important for people to see all the work that goes into creative projects. There's so much under the surface and it's so much more than just a finished product. Wonderful job with the Caretaker because you perfectly conveyed its intimidating presence and size.
Another excellent video as always! There's something that's been on my mind for a while and I thought it'd be best to ask you: Before the Caretaker explodes, it plays a noise that sounds a lot like a deer. I just wanted to ask if there was a deer mixed into the sound effect or if I'm just hearing things?
First time I played against the caretaker, I kept shouting to my friend: omg it sounds so cool! I kept saying it ever since every time when I played it
Really cool how all the pieces comes together to be something greater than just the sum of its parts. I think the description is incorrect, it says "Lithophage Corruptor" even though this is the Caretaker video
I'm using meme caretaker not because I'm almost 800 hours in the game, but because the original mission is just too scary. but fr im just tired dying and repeating the mission, there is so many turrets sometimes still good job, mate, never seen such animalic or humanic (bad english use, sorry) voices from robots, maybe only in horizon, but there was just regular recorded animal noises afaik
This is how any big enemy in a game should sound. It isn't just loud, the way it sounds actually sounds BIG.
and it's really, really fucking pissed
What I loved about the caretaker is that it sounds very robotic and mechanical yet angry, like an animal you just woke up in its slumber.
Who knew the scraper was such a useful sound design tool?
Yeah who knew:)
The Imposing nature of the Caretaker is amplified through its Vocal alarms alerting the Hive amount of Bots in the caverns. I love it so much.

This thing makes some of the best sounds in the game.
legitimately left me in awe the first time I fought it. Some of the greatest sound design I have ever heard.

Yay, more DRG sounds
Careraker is the biggest machine in drg, and its neat to see the reasoning why stuff sounds the way it does, and yes, you did a good job in making it sound scary.

You are probably the best sound designer I've seen in years, keep it up
Rock and Stone
That's very kind of you :)
Rock and Stone! And the audio that goes with it!
This is still my favorite sound design in any game
I've been fascinated precisely with this sound since I started the game, glad to have a video on it!
Absolutely love how a lot of the robotic/mechanical sounds in the game have that animal-like quality you describe! The rival tech especially, but even some of DRG’s tech seem to have that expressive/vocal quality to some degree (the PGL always sounds like it’s grunting to me haha)

The DRG sound design goes as hard as the gameplay- great job you and your colleagues did!
I love when advance unknown technology sounds animalistic. It's intimidating.
A good roar makes any enemy cooler.
First time I encountered the caretaker I was absolutely in awe. The sound design is incredible, you are very good at your job and I absolutely love your work.
babe wake up. new trj audio video just dropped
I always love behind the scenes for stuff like this, keep it up!
i see the stingtail wasn't the first thing to get the squeaky shower thingie treatment. Nice!
I remember listening to its hurt sound and thinking
1. It sounds like an error sound

@@trjaudio thank me? Thank YOU for making such amazing sounds! The sound design is half of what makes the game so wonderful!
What a remarkable talent to watch a movie and recognize that the robots are making cow moos.
I LOVE the sound of the caretaker!!! It just sounds so overpowering and massive. Really really good work there, ty for adding some more atmosphere to this fantastic game!

One of the coolest sounds in any game I’ve ever played. You can almost feel your chest vibrate from the bass like it would in real life

Something a few friends of mine and I noticed and really liked when we first fought the caretaker is how ‘musical’ it sounds throughout the fight.
The bots sound like they are talking , warning , and screaming in the only way they can, through alarms and venting air
I literally thought this is a musical cue and not caretaker's whole sound, haha, awesome sound design, very satisfying!
OMG I AM SO HAPPY
I saw this and got so excited! Watching now!!
I was smacking my head against my desk for quite some time figuring out how this exact sound was made. Thank you! Amazing sound design with a unique approach, very characteristic sound!
I love how it sounds orchestral
I was hoping we’d get another Big Enemy sound breakdown, and here we have the biggest in the game. Great work as always!
listening to this actually makes me want to start getting into sound design, I've actually made a few sound effects myself but watching this makes me want to make more and more!
ah yes, autotuned tiger noises, my favourite audible dish
its so goddamn creative how you come up with these combinations of sounds, love to see more!
Its sad that You wont be making music for the drg:rouge core
Always love these explanations from you! Looking forward to whatever you work on next, you've made some *iconic* sounds for DRG, even after 500+ hours of playing I haven't grown tired of any of them, haha.
Such an imaginative and fearsome combo of sounds, you bring caretaker to life and give it a soul. Great job
I love the scary sounds of the Care Taker and the patrol bots I think they're called. Amazing how turn turn such simple sounds into something so imposing
You're absolutely brilliant.
You are such an inspiration. Im using your videos to help make cool noises for our games
Glad you like them!
loved the sound the first time i heard it, made the experience so much cooler haha
The Caretaker was my favorite boss in DRG. Seeing how the sound behind my favorite boss only makes me appreciate it even more
Your work is impressive, I didn't think you had such a mindblowing level when I met you in Battlefield, a pleasure to have seen how it was made
Hehe. Thanks man:)
Didn't know you released music on bandcamp. I can definitely hear some vibes from drg or the other way around. Or more like your personal style?
Probably my personal style you can hear. The music on bandcamp is something I made around 2002. So I'm a tad bit older now :) I also made all the music for a recently released game called "void crew". The music is not DRG, but a lot more DRG than my personal stuff.
i love sound design videos like these
Fascinating! I was in absolute awe when I first fought The Caretaker for how great the sound design was!
You did fantastic work on the Caretaker. Easily my favorite mission type!
Were you also one who made sounds for bulk detonator? It would be interesting to see similar video about it.
I did all sounds and music production in game :) Thanks
Thanks for the amazing sounds and music! They're all awesome, I liked "follow molly" so much that I put it on my alarm clock
You should make a video on the patrol bot, I swear it vividly sounds like it's saying "patrol bot" but with heavy distortions.
the elk sound when it dies is my fav part; just super weird sounding
I love seeing and hearing this! I think it's important for people to see all the work that goes into creative projects. There's so much under the surface and it's so much more than just a finished product. Wonderful job with the Caretaker because you perfectly conveyed its intimidating presence and size.
The mooing reminds me of the Gecko mechs in Metal Gear Solid 4.
I will never unhear the autotuned tiger growl now.
I had to take this fuck on alone and my god it was hard, fun though really fun and I the sounds it was making were nice
how long are we gonna go to find out that about 60% of glyphid sounds is a squigee
you definitely got the most out of that water scraper
Another excellent video as always!
There's something that's been on my mind for a while and I thought it'd be best to ask you: Before the Caretaker explodes, it plays a noise that sounds a lot like a deer. I just wanted to ask if there was a deer mixed into the sound effect or if I'm just hearing things?
Uh, don't remember actually. Will have to check :)
I actually ADORE how the caretaker sounds and you did an excellent job. It's my favorite thing about the mission lol.
This channel i goated 🐐🐐🐐
Wish I could learn to make epic music and beats just like you
I really want a video of the Rival Antenna noise effect
It's so good.
2:10 Sounds like an old Pokemon 😁
For how much work is put into these amazing sound effects, I kinda feel bad for just goomba stomping them without a care in the world
First time I played against the caretaker, I kept shouting to my friend: omg it sounds so cool! I kept saying it ever since every time when I played it
I always thought the Caretaker sounded musical, sorta like the alien space craft from Close Encounters. :)
Caretaker its my favorite boss fight from all times
i always described the Caretaker as sounding like a dying robotic whale, and evidently that wasn't far off.
Have you tried to mess with radio static as a sound effect
Maybe straight up make the static sound like it's screaming
Never done that no :)
Really cool how all the pieces comes together to be something greater than just the sum of its parts.
I think the description is incorrect, it says "Lithophage Corruptor" even though this is the Caretaker video
My bad. Will change
Now I can't unhear the auto-tuned tiger
The autotuned tigreroars cracked me up just now
Woo! :D
I'm using meme caretaker not because I'm almost 800 hours in the game, but because the original mission is just too scary.
but fr im just tired dying and repeating the mission, there is so many turrets sometimes
still good job, mate, never seen such animalic or humanic (bad english use, sorry) voices from robots, maybe only in horizon, but there was just regular recorded animal noises afaik
Bro really had a shower thought.
When i heard caretaker for the first time it reminded me of those damn tripods 😅
auto tuned tigers should be in more sounds for everything in my opinion
Did you make the doretta wining noise with a drill??? I heard a drill and it sounded the same
No. Not the same sound sources :)
The autotuned tiger sounds so funny
This looks so dumb but genius at the same time
So let me guess, the deer like death scream also involves the scraper?
I qctually don't remember. But you could be right:)
The autotune was genius
Mushroom
is he the actual creator of the sound??
Are you asking if I made the sounds? Yes I did :)
@@trjaudio of the actual in game sounds? that’s awesome!
I just wanna say this now so you know I kill caretaker and dreadnoughts for fun
DRG development speed became abysmally slow😢 season 4 is very mid. Season 5 will be june 2024... 😢
You can Play other games ya know
You can always play void crew in the meantime. 4 player coop as well. Did all the music for it and a heavy chunk of sound design as well:)
wow it's almost like they are working on an entirely new game while also managing a publishing company and making seasonal events 🤔🤔
