    For grading N-LOG I really recommend using Davinci's new Wide Color Gamut. You can set clips to N-log and it gives you a great result.
    Interesting review, and it's very tempting to me as a former Nikon shooter who switched to Panasonic. If they had given me these specs in a body similar to the Z6 (even at an additional $1000) I probably would have switched back to just to use some of my favorite nikon lenses again. Namely the incredible 58mm 1.4 and 105mm 1.4. Hopefully they release a smaller camera with internal 4K N-log without the gamma issues in the shadows.

      Do u think nikon lenses are better than Panasonic lenses. I don't have both cameras or lenses but I have feeling or inkling that nikon photos would look better if I shoot side by side with a Panasonic or sony system. But is it due to lens quality or sensor quality ? Many Leica lenses don't perform great in dxomark review but they are super expensive like 35mm f2. So I guess dxomark rating must not be a very imp thing to consider.

      @@CineD is it possible that a very cheap or low quality lens can show lower dynamic range than a superb quality lens for video?

      @@vikastiwari1844 I personally had both systems for a bit and when it comes to photos, I did prefer Nikon a lot more and that because of the raw files. Nikon had that natural organic look where Panasonic has fine detail with makes them look very sharp but at the end I like Nikon colors more.

    You can adjust custom setting G2 to use the normal shutter release button to start recording. Or plug a 10 pin remote into the port. Attach that to your grip.
    Not sure why you're still using luts. Switch to a colour managed workflow in Resolve.

    Amazing colors Nikon reproduces. I personally prefer NOT having a flip screen, reason simply being when I record say a talking head of me for UA-cam, I STILL use a much larger external monitor simply bc even flip screens like in Sony or Canon are just too small to use. Personal preferences of course. This style of screen is much quicker to position when filming from the back.

    As a working photographer that shoots 99% of the time tethered to a computer, I think the LCD design is so much better than my Canon R5. I basically cannot flip the screen upwards when shooting horizontal because it hits the cables. Keep in mind through that I never video myself.

    • @vitorumpierre

      This style of LCD for Vloggers pisses me off, if you use your camera for professional work (with monitor and external mic) it's terrible. I think canon and sony do this to please youtubers only.

    Surprisingly the picture characterististic is reminding me of RED Epic (mx or dragon) !!

    • @danielvilliers612

      This thing is much more compact than a red camera and it has everything included to shoot. I Don't understand the need for full articulating screen unless you want to shoot yourself. Because it can flip in every direction except in front. Worse case scenario you can use nikon app as a screen.

    • @danielvilliers612
      @danielvilliers612 2 роки тому +2

      They have always been underrated. They always tried to give something more, but were always superseded by someone else not long after. For example, in the day the D800 had much better video spec than the Canon, but Canon had already cornered the market. The z6 was first full frame to give 10 bit video capabilities and then RAW. For me they did slack with the z6ii, which was more of an S refresh model. Had they put internal 10bit in it, they would have kept that momentum. They do those small missteps that kill their momentum in the video world. I see a small z9 coming in the z8 around 3.5k , but I also hope they have a very solid z6 upgrade, as they won't conquer or solidify their video market only with 3.5k and above camera.

    All the reviews till now were mainly focused on photography. i didn't even knew image stabilization doesn't work in 8k or Maybe there should be a setting for it. but Nikon should take your feedback and i have also saw CineD article about Z9 dynamic range and latitude testing in lab. Nikon should take a look at that and try to work on some new log profiles at least for Z9 to get max dynamic range out of it. real time exposure meter in video mode and some of the other features should be there to make it better camera for film making.

    • @CineD

      @JaspreetSinghArtist 2 роки тому +1

      @@CineD I hope more filmmakers give their feedback. Nikon have designed their Z lenses to have minimum focus breathing which is really good for film making but then they forgot to designed lens bodies for film making. i mean no distance marking on focus ring which is needed for focus pulling. and mechanical manual focus would have been better for focus pulling. so maybe Nikon can do something about lens design in future.

    • @JaspreetSinghArtist
      @JaspreetSinghArtist 2 роки тому

      @Apple Pear naa Oled display look cool but it doesn't help for film making. Oled display is tiny and its on the top. focus puller which have to stand in one side for focus pulling can't see any info at all. thats why even modern Cine lenses still use marking printed on the lens like old days. maybe big oled display around the lens works better but why waste to much battery power for that. keep oled display but also print distance marking on the lenses. Nikon have kinda perfect opticals for Video/Film making because of minimum focus breathing. but lens housing is not designed for film making. otherwise i am sure S lenses were going to be popular for film making.

    • @danielvilliers612
      @danielvilliers612 2 роки тому +1

      @@markshirley01 I think they will do both. First thing first i think the z8 as I said above will be a mini Z9, that will require very little development as it will use same sensor and expeed 7 processor. It will just have reduced spec like smaller buffer so you cannot take same amount of continuous photos. In video perhaps no 8k 60fps or internal prores. This will sit into the 3.5k range. Secondly I see them updating the z6 as it will be in its 4th year. The z6ii is actually an S model with minor update. I just hope nikon doesn't use the a74 sensor as it has very bad rolling shutter. Instead still keep a low megapixel sensor with lower rolling shutter and at least higher bitrate 10bit h265 internal in every mode including internal log. This would be the minimum . For around 2k, I can understand external raw for example, but at least this time, full sensor readout , like panasonic does. I think nikon should also embrace non standard resolution. 6k mode even in a Z9 would be great because it would half the file size while giving flexibility for 4k delivery. Put also some 4:3 format for anamorphic shooters.

    Great work as usual Johnnie. But about the Nikon Z9… Is no one else seeing how noisy this camera is? And the slowmo scenes look pretty bad to my eyes. Sure ProRes Raw internal will be a nice addition (though useless for Resolve users), and 8K sounds great on paper… but noise, dynamic range etc… are perhaps even more important. Let’s not forget that the Arri Alexa Mini LF ($90K ready to shoot) is an 8MP camera.
    Personally, I believe the Canon Eos R3 captures a much cleaner and more pleasing image with what seems to be best in class ISO performance and superior dynamic range. If you’re curious, take a peek at my channel. I uploaded several samples, including ISO tests. Pay particular attention to ISO 10,000… I swear it looks essentially the same as ISO 800… absent of both noise and color shifting.
    The more footage I see from the Z9 the more I’m convinced that Nikon made the decision to sacrifice both dynamic range and ISO performance for the sake of speed.

      Canon fanboy alert! :))
      "Let’s not forget that the Arri Alexa Mini LF ($90K ready to shoot) is an 8MP camera." - what a stupid comment - so, you want the 5500USD PHOTOcamera to be better, than the LF for 90 000USD? looooool, what a douchebag!

      I’ve been shooting the Canon Eos R3 since launch. I recently shot a high ISO video test where I step through the ISO from 3200 up to 25,600. The Canon looks basically identical at 800 as 10,000. Check my channel… I just call it as I see it. FYI: I’ve owned several Nikons, Sonys, Panasonics, Fujis, Olympus and Reds over the years… I addition to Canon. I’m a fanboy of only what works.
      In my experience poor noise performance is something that will haunt your footage with the Nikon. To avoid it you’ll need to crush the blacks…. And with that, welcome to 9 stops of dynamic range!
      I’m just the messenger.

      So, basically, what you wanna say is, that the R3 is better than the 90 000 LF. Correct? :)))

      I only mention the Arri in regards to resolution. This is to emphasize the point that resolution is not everything.
      At no point did I claim that the Canon had the best dynamic range. However, I did say that the Canon Eos R3 was rated as having the best ISO performance of any full frame hybrid.
      All these specs speak to is flexibility to get the shot and to recover the image. These are tools, nothing more.

So, what is your meaning of "superior" as attached to the R3 when referring to dynamic range for a particular class of cameras?

    I know you said the noise was due to upscaling to 4k, but there's some really serious noise going on on the low-light portions, and even on the fully lit parts of the video. At 10:20 it looks frankly terrible. And Looking at the shadows roll-off at 10:22 is, again, 8-bit worthy. The wood even gets discolored from lack of information.
    Blacks get crushed into oblivion.
    Perhaps it's from the bad N-Log you're talking about, or perhaps it's bad grading. In any case as a showcase it looks pretty bad for the Z9 :(

      Wow, thought I was the only one that could see it. Honestly, I can clearly see noise even at the base 800 ISO. This camera is very noisy. And as you point out, the shadow roll off is terrible. I just can’t understand why so many here are claiming it’s great. My Canon Eos R3 blows this thing away. It’s honestly not even close.

      "Upscaling from 4K to 8K on the timeline does not do justice to the footage. (And at times, in DX crop mode too). I had to make a decision between delivering this review in 4K, or 8K and eventually opted for 8K. To summarize, on a 4K timeline, the 4K footage does look cleaner." = crappy settings + upscaling.
