- Nikon Z 9 is an extremely capable camera and for this review I used it as my main camera to see how it will do for my work. From takling-head, cinematic, unboxing, beauty shots to autofocus, to balancing on a DJI RS 2, this video will answer all of your questions regarding Z9's video capabilities and how does in actual scenarios.

Hello,
Just reminder that (once UA-cam finishes full processing) this video is in 8K.
Here are some facts about this video:
The project file for this video is 4.25TB (including render and proxy files)
Edited completely on the M1 Max MacBook Pro.
The ProRes 422 10-Bit 8K video of this project is 330GB (which is above UA-cam upload size restrictions)
Compressor squeezed it into a 19GB HEVC file.
Script is 15 Pages long.
I've been working on this video since the end of December 2021
It was a lot of work, testing and making sure to give you proper information.
I hope you enjoy it.
Faruk
Here before 8K :)
Kolay gelsin Faruk Bey 👍
can't wait for 8K, clicked immediately!
şu videoyu izlerken kendimi samsung note 3 ile sony z2 yi yanyana koymuş ekranlarına bakıyormuş gibi hissettim ..
The amount of work clearly shows, truly amazing.
Elinize sağlık Faruk Beycim
I don't know either.
But why tho?
Very well done! I have a Nikon Z9 and love it. I don’t even really need 8k but it is nice to have the option. But what I love most is the improved AF, 4K60/120 (no crop) and the 10 bit internal! It is a tank tho. Cheers!
❤🙌
Thank you for your kind words. :)
I’d like to have but you can’t buy them even if u wanted 😯
@@chrisvig123 i preordered mine back on Oct of last year.
Is there any possibility that Nikon could add 10 bit internal to the Z6ii in a software update? If that was possible that would be perfect.
Incredible review. You are one of the best at this, bro! Thank you for including my voice and my silly take on sneakers. 🤣🤣🤣
Thank you so much for being a part of this.
haha “criminal mastermind” … “but I’m not NOT saying that” Had me rolling lolol
@@iPhonedo you suck
Loved the Pixar moment when you talk to the camera. Great review
Colors look slightly better on the Nikon Z9
❤🙌
Insaaaaane production dude and I'm only a few minutes in ha! Great stuff as always. Getting the popcorn to enjoy the rest of the vid.
Glad to see Nikon really embracing the mirrorless world! It’s basically impossible to buy a bad camera now. Awesome review 🙌
You’re ignoring the new Zeiss offering then 😂
I have a Sony A1 with a full compliment of GM lenses. However, since my Nikon Z9 has arrived, I barely use the Sony. Excellent video. You've captured the emotion quite well.
Why don't you use the A1 anymore.
❤🙌
@@markshirley01 I do use the A1, primarily for telephoto, having the 200-600mm lens, while I don't have a super zoom for the Nikon. Also, when I want to carry a small body, I may take the A1. However, I've used Nikon for over 40 years and it is just more comfortable to me. The cameras have similar functionality, with the Nikon having an edge in some things and the Sony in other things. I will use both cameras, but I prefer the Nikon. I have to build out my lenses in Nikon Z format, at which time I may sell the Sony and lenses. Or, maybe I will be a Nikonian and a Sonyonian and continue to use both.
So what your saying is it’s brand loyalty / nostalgia and not actual camera performance.
@@PrestonGladd Not really. As I mentioned previously, there is very little performance difference between the Z9 and A1. The Nikon excels in some areas (particularly oversampled 4K video and better 8K video thermal characteristics) and the A1 excels in other areas (e.g., 30 fps compressed RAW for Sony vs. 30 fps JPEG for Nikon). I find the Nikon more comfortable to use ergonomically with its larger body and vertical grip. Also, I prefer the Nikon menu system.
Thanks for a great video on the Z9. I’ve been shooting Nikon system for the last 16 yrs and I have been waiting for the right hybrid camera. I bought R3 for still/video and weight. Only thing i didn’t like abt R3 was it’s low megapixel compared to Sony A1. When Z9 was announced i sold my R3 and just got my Z9 yesterday. It’s still in the box and will be spending some time on it this week. Nikon has step up their game to compete in the focus/video capabilities and i will be using it for the next 10 yrs.
Excellent video! Loved the production quality. Looking forward to get hands on the Z9 soon
Never fail to be impressed with his video.. he puts in that extra effort.....
Your reviews are the most "user side" in depth ones I watch on devices and equipment. I hope someday even more companies will contact you for your take on their products Faruk.
Cheers and greetings from Greece!
Wishes for an even more productive 2022 and stay funny and healthy ;-)
is it me or the Z9 has more DR than the A1 ?
Yeah the light from lamp shade on the right is much neater on the Z 9 output
@@NalinKhurb yup
Your conversation with the Z9 made my day. Was feeling a bit stressed, but that has been cured with a good laugh. Thx.
The outro is so good! 😂😂😂
The rest of the video of course either. Thanks a lot for the detailed insides! What a wonderful piece of tech!
Thanks for this awesome review. I absolutely love Nikon. I’ll probably end up using mirrorless one day but right now I am using a Nikon D500 which is still a great camera.
Wow, must admit that the image from the Nikon is much more peasant for my eyes. I really like it over the Sony
I think the Nikon looked great but not as sharp as Sony and the Nikon had a lot of green in the image. Also, it couldn't handle the color grade as well as Sony.
@@MichaelRichards983 Owning a Z 9 and having graded the footage, if you want to sharpen the Z 9 you can, and colour grade, is a colour grade, so you can grade it to be what you want ... including less green ...
@@MattIrwinPhotographySo the green tint was his grading and not from the camera? It's pretty bad in this video.
@@MichaelRichards983 if you are grading you can grade it out ... so .... er, either Faruk did not grade it out, and that is his choice or an omission, ... grading allows a lot of control ... this is completely adjustable, it is possible he applied the same adjustment (grade), and the Sony and Nikon react differently to the same fixed settings grading, which of course would make sense. There are so many reasons why this might happen, but my Z 9 does not out of the box come with a green cast ...
@@MattIrwinPhotography Thanks for addressing my question but the whole "grading it out" aspect wasn't needed nor inquired about.
The combination of you and Undone are all that is needed to know everything about the Z9.
I'm in love with z9, the A1 is incredible but that z9 body is so much comfortable as the old d3, I wish Sony makes a real size body someday, I just can't use my a7iii without a grip
@jmventertainment7 I belive the a7iv is a terrible camera, 4k 60p with 1.5x crop for 2500? sounds like a joke, just 11fps, the canon r8 $1400 can shoot 30fps and 4k 60p no crop, let´s face it sony is lagging behind
I'm a Nikon Shooter and remained in the DSLR space (photo, not video) till the Nikon Z9 which I preordered (and which is arriving soon). Despite this, I follow Gerald Undone all the time despite not having a clue about half the terminology he uses (my only gripe and he is as efficient as they come). The Z9 will likely make me a hybrid shooter. I worked with a preproduction model and had three main takeaways for the photography side of things. First, EVF made me forget about it being an EVF (surprised you didn't touch on this as there is a large resolution difference between Sony and Nikon). Second, Heavy (that may have been first). Third, Much improved AF and frame rate (for this wildlife, sports, action photographer). I enjoyed your video and since I balance a telescope with counter weights, I can appreciate your situation. I don't say this often, but thanks for spending as much time as you did and covering the pluses and minuses. Opinions such as that are hard to find, and much appreciated. When I start using video I may come back for some questions.
I hope to get a Z9 soon. :) I can’t wait for 8K 60!
12-bit N-Raw internal too❤️🙌🏼
I prefer the Z9, it handles the highlights better on the lamp in the background. It also has the more pleasing image of the two, more so in the skin tones.
I especialy love the shots in the dark.
Comparing your A B on the A1 and Z9, the A1 was softer. Just an observation.
I'm an amateur photographer and videographer who uses Osmo Pocket as my gear (bought it after Faruk's review, made the Istanbul cinematic short movie with it), I was following up the news about Nikon Z9 for a while. There are smartphones and Blackmagic cameras that can record 8K (and above) but I was waiting from Nikon and Canon about what they can do. Z9 made me interesting, and thanks to Faruk, I got the first impressions of the Z9. Awesome production, cinematography and explanation. Thumbs up as always 👍
@nehem Nope I was following up about Z9 just for the interest. It is like having a Note 5 phone and reading news about the S22.
@nehem It is a really fantastic gimbal, watched a lot of reviews like from Peter Mckinnon, unfortunately I don't have a DSLR and budget to test it 🙃
Ima be honest. I primarily just came to look at what kind of wild visuals you cooked up for this review. Lol. I guess I’ll stick around to learn about the Z9 😂😂
You gone learn today!!!
Waiting for mine to arrive. Thanks for heightening the anticipation! 😀
Do you know how long Ray?
I have no interest in cameras, but whatever this guy does it gives me a lot of pleasure to watch! Loves from Turkey iPhonedo. ❤
I loved the sequence where you and the camera interact.
King of reviews
For sure.
Abi, sen bir çılgınsın.
Bir insanın yaptığı işi severek ve en iyi şekilde yapması gerektiğini bana her videonda hatırlatıyorsun.
The Z9 has a new compression file that makes the 45mp files to a 31mb size with no discernible loss in quality. See Matt Grangers video on it - very impressive - its gone under the radar of a lot reviews. Your basically getting a high res camera with mid res file sizes.
hahaaahahah the outtakes at the end were hilarious.....great job brotha!!!
Stellar puppeteering work by Ay Nine...
Much appreciated! I am waiting for my preorder to come in so you gave me a nice head-start on those small workflow head scratchers! I have never owned or used a Nikon so I have no idea of how it behaves in relation to other Nikons and It will be learning curve that hopefully will not take too long!😉🙏🏾
first time viewer and I have to say you have done a exceptional review in being very neutral and go about showcasing the camera's positive and shortcomings well. I also enjoyed how you mixed in your humor into the video. I am currently on waiting list to get my z9 over here in Singapore. Being a nikon users for 22years and I am glad to see this review from your perspective.
cheers!
Mammoth, indeed! An NPS buddy of mine was lucky enough to get one, and I’ve handled it. It’s a chonk! A lot bigger than I thought a mirrorless would be, but what an amazing camera. I’m personally waiting for the Z6/7 IIIs before upgrading my aging D800 :)
Im a D750 owner. I was waiting for the Z6 III because I wanted better AF especially in lowlight. But I think I'm going with the A74 because I like the Idea of the active and gyro stabalisation.
Good point of view - hopefully Nikon can do a Video orientated version of Z7 / Z6 MK III to include Z9 AF, 8-12 bit internal recording, 4/8K HDMI out 4K / 8k Video although it would need a slightly deeper body to include active fan cooling, USB c charging on go and plug in grips like the MB-N11 2 battery / EN-EL15 and possibly a grip for D4-D6 & Z9 battery.
@@dafyddthomas7299 Id take just...
AF
active stabalisation
gyro stabalisation
sensor cover
video backup
@@markshirley01 yah the AF and stabilization are the features in particular that I’m most interested in to make it down to the prosumer models.
0:39 That's an awesome transition!
Could care less about the camera I’m here for the edit!
Faruk! (and Ay Nine) again with the sheer brilliance in execution. That gimbal sequence in the studio. Off the hook. Fabulous. Loved the outtakes.
one of the best review of Z9 for video. hope Nikon listen to the feedback and add some of the video features by firmware.
The wait to get my Z9 is absolutely killing me.
The swipe into the accessories-chefs kiss*
What i like on Nikon is the colour pict result and when i shoot People, the skintone is best for me. I still used my Nikon d850 and i have Sony a7iii but for the secondary cams because Nikon produce better image for photography i think. Hopefully i can buy z9 this year to replaced my DSLR and i wont worried about shuttercount anymore.
This is the best review/presentation I've seen on the Z9 - well done! I've had my Z9 for about two weeks now, and I'm still tweaking settings and experimenting with modes - but this is a serious shooter's camera, and one key point is to consider the existing and growing support of amazing Nikkor glass for it. Cheers!
Im a Nikon hybrid shooter - Im keeping my fingers crossed that nikon create a camera to compete with the A74 and R6 in 2022 using some Z9 tech like the AF and 10 bit internal.
Excellent and fair review of the Z9, hope Nikon add features to upload LUT, edit and save LUT's back to card, also look forward in Nikon putting Z9, Video tech into G3 of Z6's, Z7's - although body may need to grow in length size to accommodate a fan, along with full articulated LCD screen (R5/R6). For my Z7/Z50 and light - mid lens plus (esp Z50 no IBIS) can use hand dolly grip like Sony GP-VPT2BT to create more stablized shots / Blogging when moving.
It would be cool to see an update after v.3.1 firmware for the Z9.
Just wanted to point out in reference to the weight comparison with the A1 that the Z9 has in effect a built in vertical grip; adding a battery grip to the A1 increases its weight to within 127g (4 oz. )of the Z9. Also it’s kind of funny that you find the Z9 menu system confusing vs. the Sony. The consensus even from some Sony users seems to be the opposite. I guess it’s what you’re used to. Anyway very informative video and beautiful shooting.
When he said “look at the camera” I almost lost it 😂😂😂😂
The interactions between you and the camera on the Ronin, was like a camera version of the Sony AIBO dog 😂
Your choice of music is just outstanding! I could watch this review a hundred times just for your sample footage. Fantastic job!
There's a lot of creativity in the Getty video clip, very delightful and congrats!
the ending is really with the ronin well done sir
This is perhaps the only Mirrorless Camera I would really trust on a feature film set. Internal RAW is a game changer, especially since it comes with zero compromises. No recording limits, no overheating, no funky battery business and it has IBIS to top it all. Now let's see how much of this trickles down to the Z6 III next year ;)
Very well done. A big thumbs up.
The only features missing from the Z9 that the A1/A74 have is active and gyro stabalisation. Id find both of those features very handy.
I’ve always heard Sony stabilization is behind canon and Nikon, including A1 v Z9, and one of their weak areas. Not true?
@@livejames9374 I think the active stabalisation in the A74 is genuinely helpful. Plus Ive used gyro stabalisation in a ZV1 and its great.
Many of us or more excited that Nikon appears to not be going out of business, and thus the Z9 will blossom future Nikons, on a lower level, with better features many of us will one day perhaps be able to afford, but that also means their DSLR equipment will be depreciating in price. Oh Yes 👍!
Thanks for this awesome review. In my opinion colors are looking better on the Nikon Z9.
Super high class production value! Those subtle speed ramps and transitions are sublime. March on to 1M subscribers...
Ooh what a wonderful in depth review. I have been a Nikon shooter since the time of film. I own a D850. I have been stuck there waiting for a perfect nikon mirrorless and I think it has arrived. Thank you for the smooth and I think unbiased review
Still shorter than a Nikon D5!
This Z9 is a monster in terms of capabilities though.
great video Faruk, I dont shoot video with my z9 but would like to , found it very informative and entertaining , especially the ronin tricks very cool.
You got your self one more subscriber. Great informative, entertaining content 👏 👌 👍
Z9... better colors of course, the rest we will see with future updates....
I don't know about that; look at all of the green skin from the Nikon and how the colors broke with the grade.
@@MichaelRichards983 green skin?
@@PortBurwell8 When watching this on a big screen, the Nikon footage has a hue of green whereas the Sony doesn't. Also, the Nikon color grade is rather broken, looks like it was pushed too far.
so so well explained and make me sure about my decision.i gonna buy it as soon as my preorder will be fulfilled.thanks so much.thanks a lot for your so well done video .
Great review 👍
Nikon came from nowhere in the video world to smashing it! great to have real competition in the market place.
20:30 so cute hahaha
That section with the Ronin was hilarious 😂
Farukcugum eline saglik 🤘🏻
Its in my wishlist....good review as usual
Hi, first time I have seen you.
I skimmed though and the video was great.
You look to be a really nice guy, and I loved the outtakes at the end with your Sony on the gimbal.
"Give me a kiss!"
When you said you were going to do beauty shots I was thinking you had a hot model, not some shoes.
But enjoyed it and will subscribe. And watch the whole video again.
Regarding counterbalancing the jib for the weight of the Z9: instead of adding more weights, try smaller batteries on the HeadPlus. You can pan and tilt all day on much smaller NP-F batteries. Love your videos!
All I need from camera is the consistent quality of 120p compared to 24p, and A7Siii is perfect in this regard! The 60p and 120p looks almost as detailed as 24p, and this is the best thing of this camera for me! Consistancy of quality in different modes! Here with Z9 we can see that 60p much less detailed than 24p, and 120p is even less detailed
can't judge based on UA-cam compression. and need to wait for N-Raw firmware update.
As always very informative review. But this is literally the funniest review of anything I have ever seen 🤣
Great job as usual 👏👏👏
1) Excellent review as always. 2) Awesome to see the newest droid in the Star Wars universe co-starring in the 2nd half of this video!
In 2 years I’m going to buy this camera used for $3,500 and daily drive it for 8-10 years…. it’s going to be amazing.
Watched in 4k and it looked so good. Nice work as usual. Sure miss going out with my own nikon these last few years. Hoping a z8 or z7iii is shipped in the next year or so. Because that's my my speed vs the pro z9.
That gimbal...priceless 😊
Hello Faruk, first and foremost thank you very very much for this video, i had been waiting since the release of the Z9 for such a video showing the true video/cinematic capabilities of this camera. I mean aside from the publicity clips which i have learned to not trust, or at least take with a grain of salt, many reviewers talked about the theoretical possibilities and have regurgitated the numbers, but none so far demonstrated so eloquently what this camera is really capable of on the video side. In that respect for the technical features and numbers Gerald is my go to guy, but i often wish he would make actual real life videos to better demonstrate the features and capabilities he talks about. So when you mentioned his name in this video it struck me; You guys should do more cooperative reviews. I mean Gerald could make the in depth technical aspect of a camera (or other video related products) and you could follow up with the actual hands on experience doing either beauty shots or short creative stories like in this video. I know that personally i would follow along for it helps me so much to come full circle and really forge my opinion about a product based on real life experience and manipulations. I think it would be the best thing for all of us aside from buying the equipment ourselves, which is the ultimate goal for both of you guys to begin with right ?
Again thank you, god bless and keep up the great work 🙂
Having used the d3s for wedding photography for a couple of years and waiting to upgrade my d750 bodies so bad I can see myself getting a couple Z9 for both photo and video work, it's so back ordered thst it might take awhile for us non NPS shooters. So the DJI wireless system review is coming too!
Great video! I've never seen your content before - I'll be keeping an eye out for it.
As to your question of if the Z 9 is something I want - I'm a still photographer and recently took delivery of two Z 9s and 4 S lenses. These are my first Z cameras (coming from the D5 and D850) and I'm extremely impressed.
I have my Z 9 now, and one thing I need to stress is how big and heavy it is. I knew it was big and heavy going in, but I wasn't prepared for HOW big and heavy it is. It's a studio camera for me but any ideas I had about taking it out for hobbywork were crushed under its immense weight. I'll stick to my Z FC and my M43 bodies for nature and street fun.
So it is not really usable for video because of its weight?
@@PavelTsvetkovVideoandPhoto Depends on how you use it. If it's on a tripod then it's great. If you are carrying it around you better be really strong because it weighs as much as two normal cameras. It's too heavy for my Shark Nano Slider; so I'd need to upgrade that equipment.
How the hell u outstand your own videos everytime, ill never understand. This is what an “in depth” review is! And its so so much fun to watch at the same time. Bravo my friend✌🏽🤘🏽 i think its time for you to move on the channel name from iphonedo, sad but true:( maybe it should live as a section , i dont know, as a subscriber for so so so many years it breaks my heart to say but i think u should do it man, u r one of the best and naming should reflect that
Angelbird 512GB CF Express Type B SE cards are USD $200. Got one for my Z9. Great deal.
Very objective opionions with so many userful information (from non-Nikon user PoV), love the robotic responds while playing with the Z9. Thanks to your beautiful wife to make it so interesting, nice job!
I want it 🤩🤩🤩
*I hope Nikon will consider adding a True 24.00p speed setting so this camera can be used a little more easily for commercial Cinema production. Also, the night time grade is too dark. You're about 1/2 to about 1.5 stops under-exposed.*
Also for Z's With good Adaptors like Fringer EF-Z adaptors can buy good EF Glass including many IS lenses 24-70 / 105 F4, T&SE works very well with Nikon Z's, wonder whether Canon EF Cinema lens (EF mount) MF will work well with the Z's including the Nikon Z9.
Nice work on the review. What do I think? I can't get past the price tag of the camera body. I'm at the "use what I have until I can sort out this new mirrorless craze" part of my photography career.
If I was predominantly photo Id be in no rush to move to mirrorless.
A1 WIN ~
This is how a great camera review is done. You keep raising the bar with every video, just love your productions.
The Z(ZED)9 is so much better I’m amazed at the difference.
That was a lot of fun.
Τέλειο - Perfect!!!!!
Have a lot to learn! For me most menu systems are cumbersome. But in relation to the cameras: Nikon cheaper camera with faster and mutch cheaper memory cards (the fastest, not the SD ones). Hope to see good upgrades from Nikon like with last Z series. Sony, smaller and lighter, flexible with or without grip, but in total way more expensive.
I hope Nikon will put out some great improvements. Also Z9ii will be lighter I hope. Maybe 30fps RAW is an option in the upgrade? If 8k 60fps is possible it should be possible with processing speed? Is screen grab from 8k same quality as pictures? Than 8k 60 is the way to go for action. Just pick the frame out of the video? Or am I not really understanding the technique. Just an amateur, mostly new to video.
I would be curious to see the autofocus on a Puma shoe.
So good! So good!!
In your opinion are the colors better on the Sony A1?
I personally love my Z9 so far. In the past I've only shot stills on my DSLRS and did all of my motion work on other cameras. I'm hoping this camera can replace some of the lower budget jobs for motion and maybe some of the middle ones as well! What was the app you were using with the video? Looks like a nice option for a client monitor.
