  • The Devil at the Crossroads is a legend that was claimed by at least two musicians from history. O Brother Where Art Thou? ties that story into it's Odyssey like story and has Tommy, the guitarist, encounter the devil four times. Do you remember all four?

"The devil is in the details!" I am amazed at all the tiny, seemingly insignificant details fit together. But it needed to be pointed out to me. This "Moral of the Story" guy does an amazing job. Absolutely Amazing!

This movie is and always will be my favorite film. Even though I am an Athiest today and live far from home. Everytime I watch this movie, a tear comes to my eye, remembering my papa and mama in their little brick house built in the side of the Virginia Appalachian mountains, with 3 horses in the barn, a tractor in the yard, and every morning waking up to a tall glass of chocolate milk and 2 of Mama's scratch made buttermilk biscuits with butter and honey. Papa and I would hop on the tractor and drive down a little path past Ol Kelly's cabin, and we'd follow the stream down to see the waterfalls hidden deep in the mountains. I think about that a lot. because while I am an athiest today, Ive never been closer to heaven then those memories. Ive not been back there since they passed about 15 years ago. something tells me that little slice of life will be apart of me forever

Thank you. Years ago I took an assignment in Algeria teaching English. We were locked in a hotel and I remember watching this movie nearly every week to pass the time. It always struck me. Your analysis has brought out a finer understanding. Looking forward to your next in depth analysis of films and am thankful you take the time to illuminate the more subtle principles in these stories.

I never knew why I love this movie so much I even bought the soundtrack for my dad and I never watch things over and over again but you explained it so well and it literally brought tears to my eyes to feel like I had felt that as well! You can know every word to this song but until you hear what deep down they are saying, you're not really listening! A very opportune time to get to know myself thank you an affirmation of sorts

Speaking of Abstract Inversion, you should watch One False Move then follow with Fargo.
One False Move also contains a foretell variant of Anton Sigur's 'shoe check' at the end of No Country for Old Men when an early story murder scene involves an on-scene forensics agent that prompts an entering Detective to be careful where he steps.
All movies are Spell-Casting rituals that perform the sole function of sedating the masses who partake

Where do science and post-modernity lead us? We are more depressed, unhappy, and lonely than ever. Scorn at religion and old-timey traditions all you want, but who will be laughing when that day comes. I'm a liberal and highly educated with two Master's degrees. I was blind, but now I fixed my eyes on that everlasting treasure in heaven.

"Man, in his pride, created God in his image and likeness"
    (Friedrich Nietzsche)
"The Devil is just a nickname that God uses to do morally questionable things."
    (Herman Hesse)
So there is no one and nothing to forgive, except the protagonists themselves making peace with their pasts and amending their presents through a mystic journey..Christian symbology is just how those experiences are coded by people raised and educated in a traditional North American environment.
For those of us born and raised in secular countries, the Christian symbology used in Oh Brother Where Are Thow looks as fantastic and outlandish as the Greek symbology used by Homer in The Odissey looks for Christians.

All movies contain what I call Abstract Inversions.
    Mirrored representations.
Tommy's mirror in that film ..
    George "Babyface" Nelson.
    Both sought fame.
Both fading away in opposite forms.
    Tommy vanished.
    George sulked off.
Tommy's devil-gifted playing was recorded for future generations to hear without anyone knowing who he actually was.
George's violent crime spree would etch him in Outlaw History without anyone knowing how much it misrepresented his true nature.
I enjoy comparing that version of "Babyface" with the one we see in Michael Mann's "Public Enemies".
Another variant of Abstract Inversion (A I.) before our very eyes

Robert Johnson is believed to have "sold his soul to the devil" because in an 80s interview with then-VERY-old Blues players, He would show up at honky tonks and try to sit in with bands, but couldn't play in key and just kept hitting sour notes...then he disappeared for a relatively short period of time, returned, and could "Play dat guitar like NOBODY BIDNEZZ.". It's called "Found a guitar teacher somewhere." The guy must've simply took some lessons and learned the scales. Maybe the guitar teacher was a white person, hence "the devil" among black men who knew nothing about most white people but slavery and segregation.
