Tommy's Fate - O Brother Where Art Thou?

- The Devil at the Crossroads is a legend that was claimed by at least two musicians from history. O Brother Where Art Thou? ties that story into it's Odyssey like story and has Tommy, the guitarist, encounter the devil four times. Do you remember all four?

"The devil is in the details!" I am amazed at all the tiny, seemingly insignificant details fit together. But it needed to be pointed out to me. This "Moral of the Story" guy does an amazing job. Absolutely Amazing!
Thanks James! I am honored you liked it.
This movie is and always will be my favorite film. Even though I am an Athiest today and live far from home. Everytime I watch this movie, a tear comes to my eye, remembering my papa and mama in their little brick house built in the side of the Virginia Appalachian mountains, with 3 horses in the barn, a tractor in the yard, and every morning waking up to a tall glass of chocolate milk and 2 of Mama's scratch made buttermilk biscuits with butter and honey. Papa and I would hop on the tractor and drive down a little path past Ol Kelly's cabin, and we'd follow the stream down to see the waterfalls hidden deep in the mountains. I think about that a lot. because while I am an athiest today, Ive never been closer to heaven then those memories. Ive not been back there since they passed about 15 years ago. something tells me that little slice of life will be apart of me forever
That is a beautiful memory. Sounds a bit like heaven to me. Thank you for painting it so vividly.
God is love...
I pray you find your way back to Jesus🙏🏾
You forgot the time Tommy saw the devil the night after recording Man of Constant Sorrow and was so scared he ran of by himself.
he R-U-N O-F-T
one of my favorites movies. The song " a constant sorrow" is amazing. Great Video!
This review is bona fide!
I love this movie. It's one of my all time favorites.
We'll all see you again, in the great by and by! Time enough to watch everyone's loving work in every crowd and audience, in private and alone, all with a loving hand on our shoulder.
Thank you. Years ago I took an assignment in Algeria teaching English. We were locked in a hotel and I remember watching this movie nearly every week to pass the time. It always struck me. Your analysis has brought out a finer understanding. Looking forward to your next in depth analysis of films and am thankful you take the time to illuminate the more subtle principles in these stories.
Thank u so much , u can't imagine how much joy and happiness I got in my dark days, from thus movie, every time I watch the movie I go true tears and nostalgia about past good days. And how far humanity got depart from loving God
beautiful description of one of my favourite films. I'm secular but I appreciate what you are saying.
Thanks. That means a lot!
Are used to go visit my great aunt out in the deep country of North Florida which exist believe it or not, and she had this video on VHS and a few others and no cable so over my whole life growing up I always watched this video every year spending time with her and it became one of my favorite movies of all time I’ve revisited as an adult, and was completely in shock of how deep the story of this movie is I really enjoy this guys ability to summarize and convey the movie in a understandable way great video
Thanks! That’s a cool story. I’m glad you enjoyed my little video.
I never knew why I love this movie so much I even bought the soundtrack for my dad and I never watch things over and over again but you explained it so well and it literally brought tears to my eyes to feel like I had felt that as well! You can know every word to this song but until you hear what deep down they are saying, you're not really listening! A very opportune time to get to know myself thank you an affirmation of sorts
I’m glad it resonated. God bless.
Nice extrapolation of this movie. I did not get all those inferences when I first saw it. Nice job! These types of deep meanings and morals of stories is why the original Twilight Zone is so phenomenal in television history.
I love this and actually read the Odessey when I was in Junior High.
So great to see this and I completely agree. Real miracles happen in our life, when we are connected to God. Blessings or curses, our choice.
There is a deep magic in the world, deeper even than the Enemy realizes and tries to use… God loves a good story
Thank You Man.
I thought it was just a good movie, Now, I've learnt something new and something other info I've had for years popped out the other ear.
Speaking of Abstract Inversion, you should watch One False Move then follow with Fargo.
One False Move also contains a foretell variant of Anton Sigur's 'shoe check' at the end of No Country for Old Men when an early story murder scene involves an on-scene forensics agent that prompts an entering Detective to be careful where he steps.
All movies are Spell-Casting rituals that perform the sole function of sedating the masses who partake
I’m not familiar with One False Move. I will look into it.
@@MoralofthisStory Bill Paxton, Billy Bob Thornton.
Fantastic analysis as always
Great that you covered Tommy's story. Thanks.
I like this! Thanks!!!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻💕💕💕
I’m glad you like it 😊
I'm somewhere between heathen and pagan, but I very much appreciate your take on the stories which enrich us. Namaste
Thank you so much! I appreciate your perspective.
Bravo well said amen. Best analysis of this movie i have ever heard.
Thank you!
Once again an abundant THANK YOU for this personal expose of the character of Tommy in OBWAT. I had heard the story about the real Robert Johnson well before ever having seen the movie. Very well done!
Thank you for your enthusiastic response!
Just watched robert johnson doc. Fucking mind blown knowing this!
Really great breakdown! Great movie! Great insight!
Awesome! This is one of my Favorite movie. Thanks for your insight.
Love the movie even more after listening to this man!!❤
Our whole world is pointing us to spiritual truths.
Love this and your main analysis of the film, great stuff, learned some new bits from you other analysts haven't pointed out! :D
Amazing video
I really enjoyed this. Thank you.
I just relized that the "devil", Sherrif Cooley, played by Daniel von Bargen, is also Edwin Spangler in Malcolm in the Middle.
I am so happy I found your channel. Thank you and God bless!
I’d love to see a follow up of how things went 👀
Damnit!, how come I didn't view this movie in this light?. Of course, what a piece of work by Coen effin' brothers and excellent insight into this movie 😊🥰.
Hahaha! Glad you liked it.
This is such a good breakdown
Thanks!
well thought out and put together sir thank you so much for this
Brilliant
Dude you are awesome. Great video, great teaching. Well done.
Just found the channel and subbed! I love this kind of analysis.
As always, what a fantastic video
Nailed it with the part about the comparison of Tommy battling the devil with music like the song “The Devil Went Down to Georgia”!
Keep it up! This is by far one of my favorite UA-cam channels out there!
Thanks, Noah! That means a lot.
Good stuff !! Thank you
Amazing video! Wonderful idea for a channel 👏🏾
I enjoyed that. Well done.

@@MoralofthisStory Much respect
Another great part of the meaning, looks like, I am going to be here all day, lol.
Many people sell there's souls an accommodate the devil even right now in there household by how they act an speak about each other many believe there saved bc of going to a church buildings but not so you have to be 100 percent with the lord an throw away discrimination racial issues an come to God with a loving open heart
Subscribed brother! Ooh yeah.
I love your videos! Would love to hear your analysis of the movie Holes.
In about another 100 days or so, you'll have over 1 million views! Congrats on the milestone. Would you consider doing a video about Big Fish?
Yes! Thank you for the suggestion.
I like this video
Where do science and post-modernity lead us? We are more depressed, unhappy, and lonely than ever. Scorn at religion and old-timey traditions all you want, but who will be laughing when that day comes. I'm a liberal and highly educated with two Master's degrees. I was blind, but now I fixed my eyes on that everlasting treasure in heaven.
Another perfect video
Glad you think so!
"Man, in his pride, created God in his image and likeness"
(Friedrich Nietzsche)
"The Devil is just a nickname that God uses to do morally questionable things."
(Herman Hesse)
So there is no one and nothing to forgive, except the protagonists themselves making peace with their pasts and amending their presents through a mystic journey..Christian symbology is just how those experiences are coded by people raised and educated in a traditional North American environment.
For those of us born and raised in secular countries, the Christian symbology used in Oh Brother Where Are Thow looks as fantastic and outlandish as the Greek symbology used by Homer in The Odissey looks for Christians.
one of them played for Elvis A. Presley's baptism .
All movies contain what I call Abstract Inversions.
Mirrored representations.
Tommy's mirror in that film ..
George "Babyface" Nelson.
Both sought fame.
Both fading away in opposite forms.
Tommy vanished.
George sulked off.
Tommy's devil-gifted playing was recorded for future generations to hear without anyone knowing who he actually was.
George's violent crime spree would etch him in Outlaw History without anyone knowing how much it misrepresented his true nature.
I enjoy comparing that version of "Babyface" with the one we see in Michael Mann's "Public Enemies".
Another variant of Abstract Inversion (A I.) before our very eyes
Very interesting.
They were bonafide upon baptism and receiving salvation for salvation is known as the holy spirit and the inheritance from our heavenly father.
I met Jesus when I was 11, I met The Lord when I was in my 30's. I know they are real. Full Stop
Prove it.
Wasn't the deal with the devil story attached to Robert Johnson in the 60s when Capitol released an album including "Crossroads Blues" ?
That sounds about right. I wouldn’t be surprised.
Spiritual things are a real thing as far as I'm concerned.
Robert Johnson is believed to have "sold his soul to the devil" because in an 80s interview with then-VERY-old Blues players, He would show up at honky tonks and try to sit in with bands, but couldn't play in key and just kept hitting sour notes...then he disappeared for a relatively short period of time, returned, and could "Play dat guitar like NOBODY BIDNEZZ.". It's called "Found a guitar teacher somewhere." The guy must've simply took some lessons and learned the scales. Maybe the guitar teacher was a white person, hence "the devil" among black men who knew nothing about most white people but slavery and segregation.
His teacher was Ike Zimmerman who taught Robert everything. His daughters confirmed the story.
it is not a retelling of the odyssey, that's what some people say to sound smart, it just has some similarities, mostly coincidental, others forced
Wasn't Paganini a crossroads soul seller too?
You missed one encounter....as Tommy was also present when the barn is surrounded while they slept outside, so terrified that he "lit out" well before they other three only to reappear at the KKK rally.
Pappy o Daniel is also based on a real guy but he was governor of Texas I believe
Yes, I remember reading that. It’s cool that they tied in some real stories.
They actually beleived in old wives tales back thrn.
Huzzah 44 !
Can you do a video on the fate of Ligma Johnson?
=)
vanskelig greier du du tar opp hær. men på mennesklig basis blir det trøbllete å forholde til slike ooh.
What is Buster Scruggs doing in the south?

You wor singing that at the gallows.
Well…. I wasn’t using it.
Haha!
can't forget mashed potato johnson among the other blues legends
I live in the midst of tva and the movie is just right just about. But this video and commenter is offensive
Offensive? How is it offensive?
RELIGION IN THE DAYS OF IGNORANCE. NOW WE KNOW BETTER.
"Spiritual Truths".......... ok. 🙂
You can't sell your soul,,,, 😮
It doesn't belong to you 😅
The devil is a lyer ,, go figure.
The Magic World View is not 500 years old. It was still a strong reality in c.1800 This is expressed in Mormonism "Book of Mormon", Huckleberry Finn, and Feats on the Fjord, c1835 Harriet Martineau. And Mormonism is still here working itself
I don’t think that quote was saying that the ‘magic world view’ ended 500 years ago. I think he meant it more generally as another way of saying “in the past” people fully embraced miracles, etc.
