to answer the question you guys had about what the neighbor calls tinfoil psychic guy that was bleeped, in japanese its "kichigai" if i remember correctly which is essentially a slur for mentally challenged people. its a super super bad word in japanese that gets bleeped and censored if its written or spoken on tv and its basically the japanese equivalent of the r slur
also, it doesnt quite really translate as just the r slur in japanese because the word itself is basically meaning someone who is violently mentally unstable, i think its less of a "slow" thing and more of a "crazy violent psycho person" thing. either way, its very discriminatory in japanese hence the censorship
Look if we're gonna keep using the word "retard" for it's original meaning in daily life (to prevent or impede) you can just type it brub; no one is gonna think its for offensive reasons with the context of your post. Humans do have the ability to differentiate context and intent; and I think we're confusing and obsfucating language for questionable reasons.
@@josereyes-fd1qpthere are many japanese swear words: chikushō (oh shit/damn), shinjimae (go to hell), shi-ne (die, very common harsh curse word actually), kutabare (basically their "fuck you"), kuso ("fuck!" or "shit!"), and many more.
What I like about this movie is that unlike other found footage movies this is actually a finished documentary and not just all the videos put in chronological order.
The guy that directed Noroi actually has an entire film series called Senritsu Kaiki File Kowasugi about a man named Endo investigating and documenting Japanese urban legends. Theyre really hard to find and I've only seen a couple of them but theyre quite fun, spooky and well made especially for the budget so far. I definitely recommend you try seeking them out! I cant remember if theyre "finished documentaries" per se, though. Still worth watching either way 😂
James the music you mentioned I think is New World Symphony 4th Movement by Dvorak. Its used in a lot of pop culture stuff, especially in Japan. Used quite well in Asuras Wrath too if I remember.
In highschool me and my friends had horror movie nights where we consistently tried to one up each other. I hunted this film down on a sketchy streaming service around 2012, before it was widely distributed and it really added to the whole found footage, “this could have happened” feeling. Absolute gem of a movie, highly recommended it if you haven’t seen it. The sound design alone is horrifying!
That sauce on the eggs is either ketchup or barbecue sauce. The Japanese love that flavor combination; there's even a restaurant famous for it's "omurice" which is an omelette atop a pile of rice topped with ketchup.
I really miss Lucy. I hope her and Molly can learn to get along. I just finished watching Noroi on Shudder. I was pleasantly surprised with this movie. Thank you for watching this
The manner in which they manage to make everything super realistic ( the TV shows with the psychics, the village with the weird symbol ) is incredible. It's the War and Peace of found footage.
This movie freaked me out toward the end of the movie but at the beginning when when the little girl was like “Bye-Bye” then 5 days later the family dies I honestly busted out laughing. The tone changes was too drastic.
You should watch Cult and Occult by this same director. They’re also found footage. Noroi is the most put-together (and least bizarre) of these movies, but they’re actually all part of the same cinematic universe. And Tinfoil Hat definitely feels more at home in the wider story
I’m only a few minutes in so apologies if this does get addressed- but Koji Shiraishi’s filmography is insane and he’s god such an impressive style of found footage. He’s got his own unique style of cosmic horror and it’s always so much fun.
But sometimes is too goofy, like the final in Occult(low budget mess it up).and Some part and the final of Senritsu kaikki file kowasugi(the Kaijuu fight is uncalled for)
To this day, this is one of the only horror movies where I revisit it, and then find myself checking over my shoulder for the next day or two. The atmosphere it creates is unreal levels of paranoia inducing
Molly is just like the dog I adopted from my dad when he died. He's a tiny old chihuahua with no weight to throw around and it took two years for him to be cool with my cat lol.
Just re-watched this the other day! So few found footage films can bring me back to them and keep their magic after a first time viewing, but noroi gets even more scary the more you watch it
The sound that plays when the blue faces are appearing made me throw my headphones the first time I heard it. Im not usually super affected by sounds like that one but it triggered a legit flight response lol
My friend Luis is a camera OP on Ghost Hunters. It is indeed corny as hell in person. He also said shooting the creepy B roll of the locations is actually the scariest part, since they are all off on their own shooting separately. The hosts also encourage them to listen to horror movie soundtracks and spooky music to get them in that head space. Corny show, apparently really cool guys though.
If you guys are ever struggling to get your dog to accept your cat and vice versa, try rubbing some catnip on the dog's fur and reward both of them every time they enter a room the other is in/ the podcast room. Every time you carry Lucy in, give a treat to Molly and Lucy and make it a happy thing for them to look forward to. Soon they'll start to see that their sibling means treats and get excited to see them entering!
I don't know if there is a correct way to make a formal suggestion for movies for you guys to watch, but Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum is one of the best horror movies I have ever watched. I would love to see it covered on the channel! Thanks for the hours of entertainment!
James, the song you thought was from Battle Royale is Dvorak's Symphony No. 9's 4th movement! It's used in SO much media so its not surprising that it sounded familiar!
19:16 I believe it is a classical piece that’s been used in many different media, including One Piece and Gunther/Walters entrance in WWE. It’s been used in plenty more but those are the ones that pop to my head
this was honestly one of the best found footages i've ever watched, really wasn't expecting it to be so great. all the threads of the people connecting at the end and all the footage looking more real than like a movie, just really impressive
This has been one of my favorite movies for almost a decade, a fan sub was available on UA-cam several years ago and I was telling everyone I knew to watch it ASAP before it got taken down. I’m so glad it’s finally gotten proper distribution and the Western recognition it’s always deserved!
I like to believe that Kagutaba isn’t necessarily a malevolent entity, but after a while he got sick of being summoned just to be used as a weapon and decided “oh you just want me around to hurt people? Alright, bet.”
idk if you guys will see this comment or not, but another thing i wanted to say since i absolutely love this movie and research for it might be hard to non-japanese viewers is very difficult is that this movie actually had a ton of really cool mixed-media type of promotion when it was first releasing in japan akin to stuff like the blair witch project. like for example, there was a bunch of websites and blogs that were made that were like kobayashi's blog with all of his books and documentaries that he's made, a fan blog dedicated to him, etc and i think that stuff is super cool lol. i dont remember the exact specific term for it in japanese, but ESPECIALLY in 2005 there was a massive wave of like found footage ghost/supernatural media in japan that is kind of phrased as like real, actual events that happened with interviews and everything like that. theyre all made in found footage style and theyre super super authentic looking across the board, usually made as like vignettes in an overall bigger horror anthology series. they never really caught on in the west, but i think its a neat little subgenre of horror thats worth checking out if youre able to get past the language barrier. the director of this movie, koji shiraishi, has actually made a ton of smaller vignettes in this style throughout the 00s and 2010s but this is by far one of his most well known works. there's also a ton of deleted/unreleased footage that would have made this movie a lot longer, but i think its also worth checking out these scenes because its just interesting stuff like more of kobayashi's other documentaries and an entire other plot line about kagutaba slowly exerting influence over like the entire world at one point (?). it doesnt really change the main story in any way but its definitely interesting to check out if you can find it
37:34 Sorcerers and shamans are synonyms in Japanese. That is why in Jujutsu Kaisen it occasionally has translations say either Jujutsu Sorcerer or Jujutsu Shaman.

Japan is super strict about copyright law. They don't really have anything like a fair use policy, so they often go after anyone that shows any copyrighted imagery from Japan. It would be sick if he could do more J-horror, but I don't know how he'd be able to.

I really hope this movie eventually gets a blu ray release. I first watched it on UA-cam because it was so hard to find, before it ended up on Shudder that is. There are some very creepy and unsettling scenes in this movie. It does take its time but I enjoyed it. I just noticed the cat clock behind James, from the Japanese movie House (Hausu), that is so awesome.
I somehow saw this one at least a decade ago, I remember finding it on UA-cam in college. Back then, 2012-ish, UA-cam was a free for all when it came to horror movies. I watched stuff like Martyrs, A Serbian Film, and Antichrist on UA-cam back in the day. I don't even think they were all age restricted. What a time to be alive.
I just came here for an idea I’d like to share, after the kill pie chart and before the golden chainsaw, you give us a scare meter, based on how scary you thought the movie was, it doesn’t add anything but personal insight
so idk if this'll help or if its something you guys are already doing, if the cat and dog have specific areas for eating you can take a towel (or something else that soaks up smells/scents) and rub it all over [the cat] and put the towel under [the dog]'s food bowl. over time [the dog] will associate [the cat]'s scent with good things like food and treats and will be less aggressive/scared towards [the cat]. you can use the same logic and put the towel in other places like the pet's bed or where they have good things happen.
I don't know if this said enough but I really have to give all my love and thanks to Chelsea and James for looking further into asian horror movies, which I understand its hard to understand and research either due to translations, understanding of cultures/societal norms that is quite different in some asian horrors. hopefully you are further delving into other asian horror movies

Probably one of the only few horror movies that rly gave me nightmares bcs the night after watching it I couldnt sleep. Godlike stuff would recommend
19:20 That music is not from Battle Royale! (Although it may have been used in that film?) It's from Dvořák's 9th Symphony "From the New World", a piece he wrote when he was visiting America. It's a fascinating piece with a really interesting story and view of what "American" music was and could be in the 1800s. If you ever do more research-y episodes, the use of (classical) music in Horror would be really cool!
Oh! I have a personal answer as to why japanese ghosts scare me more than other ghosts! Other than the stylistic choices, which are *chef's kiss* Japanese ghosts are always connected to a curse. Sometimes they're previous victims, sometimes they're the origin of a curse, it varies a lot. The thing that's different, is that japanese ghosts take everything and everyone that happens upon them. A japanese curse WILL get you , even if the worst thing you've done is be at the wrong place at the wrong time. In japanese movies you're doomed no matter what. Once a ghost sets its sights on you, you're as good as gone, even if you're innocent. They're bulldozers, they're basically unstoppable forces. And most people are not immovable objects.
19:20 I KNOW SOMETHING OMG It's the final movement of Dvorak symphony 9, it's pretty famous and seems to appear all over pop culture so I wouldn't be surprised if it was in Battle Royale, couldn't say for sure though it's been a good few years since I saw that film.
Ive been hoping you would review this and put in a recommendation a couple years ago and I am beyond ecstatic you covered it! its one of my favorite movies :)
Fun thing I noticed, which may be a total coincidence but I would love if it's intentional: The dam is called 鹿見ダム, or shikami dam which isn't a real place and the kanji translates to shika/deer 鹿 mi/view 見, which yeah, seems like a very typical name for a dam in the middle of the countryside. However, Japanese is fun and if you look at it as it's written in english, you might read it as shi kami rather than shika mi which might be written shi/death 死 and kami/god 神, which when the kanji is put together (死神) is shinigami, or god of death.
I really wanted to watch a movie last night so I watched White Noise so I could listen to the podcast... I wish I would’ve known to watch this instead 🥴🥴😭
So I had to drop everything to watch this specific episode of your podcast. I had randomly discovered this movie on UA-cam but not in the UA-cam Movies section. It was just posted by someone (big hint, a lot of movies are posted for free without the UA-cam Movie section involved, especially with foreign movies). I think I found it during the Americanization of a lot of Japanese movies (The Ring, The Grudge, Pulse). And I started watching more J-Horror and found that title just there on UA-cam. It's a great film and a lot of my favorite J-Horror and K-Horror have slow burn creepiness to it. I hope you guys do more Japanese and Korean horror Like White: Melody of Death and Tag.

Chelsea looks even more incredible in this than usual. Fantastic ep as usual guys!
gotta love that the title's Curse: The Curse
Oh! I have a personal answer as to why japanese ghosts scare me more than other ghosts! Other than the stylistic choices, which are *chef's kiss*
Japanese ghosts are always connected to a curse.
Well, what a pleasant surprise to see on the podcast. Noroi is a fantastic movie, but does require multiple viewings to get everything.
I just watched the Creepy kids podcasts! I watched this great movie on october from last year and its definitely top 10 Found Footage
Pulse would be an interesting movie for the podcast
The tinfoil guy in this movie is like having an Australian Alex Jones in Lake Mungo
So sake is pronounced sah-kay. Vowels have a consistent pronunciation so its sah-kay, karate is kara-tay, etc etc.
best found footage horror ever! First saw this back in 2015.
this is one of my favorite horror movies. Great to see u both covering it
One of my favorite horror movies of all time
19:20 I KNOW SOMETHING OMG It's the final movement of Dvorak symphony 9, it's pretty famous and seems to appear all over pop culture so I wouldn't be surprised if it was in Battle Royale, couldn't say for sure though it's been a good few years since I saw that film.
I can’t wait to watch this tonight and then come back to the podcast
Ive been hoping you would review this and put in a recommendation a couple years ago and I am beyond ecstatic you covered it! its one of my favorite movies :)
YES! Was hoping you guys would get around to this one.
19:12 What James hums sounds exactly like part of the soundtrack to the original "Conan the Barbarian" film.
Fun thing I noticed, which may be a total coincidence but I would love if it's intentional:
The dam is called 鹿見ダム, or shikami dam which isn't a real place and the kanji translates to shika/deer 鹿 mi/view 見, which yeah, seems like a very typical name for a dam in the middle of the countryside.
I really hope they get into more foreign horror films. Would absolutely LOVE to hear what they think of Atterados
Granny is a big gen z/alpha horror game icon
James the song you don’t know is New World Symphony by Dvorak 19:00
The song you hummed at 19:12 is "New World Symphony" IV
i'm dying at chelsea saying 'murica 36x instead of marika lolol
Chelsea swears she’s not a gamer but immediately remembers a character from a game that was shown for 5 secs lol. Although Elden Ring is 10/10
19:13 for our fandom James that's WALTER/GUNTERS old theme.
That brown sauce is oyster sauce.
The word is probably "kichigai" which means lunatic or nut job. It's prohibited from broadcast, partly because it's outdated.
Hurray! Chelsea mentioned my comment about Shih Tzus!
I need to watch this movie again. I know I loved it but I do not remember much.
