Going along with the addiction metaphor, it was very telling that Daniel did it again, after the whole humiliating dog incident. He had a terrible experience, but still went back and did it again. This is the exact logic you use when you do drugs. I OD’d, got robbed, or did/said something terrible to a family member, but maybe this time will be different. As a former addict seeing him doing it again really felt realistic lol
I read it as nearly every demon/ghost/spirit that Mia saw as being the first drowned lady changing her shape to manipulate her. I think that’s why her “mom” looked waterlogged the more Mia interacted with her. I also think that when they’re being possessed, there’s multiple spirits around either waiting their turn or waiting to help manipulate things
I also think the reason the spirits are so eager to be inside of someone's body is very similar to the reason Mia wants to keep doing it. To just feel something. Maybe that's the only way the spirits feel anything in the space they are in
Mia pointing to the empty space during the party could be her pointing to Duckett, the hand’s newest addition. Wouldn’t be surprised if this is the final shot of the prequel.
That old man who appears in Riley‘s hospital bed is the same one that is seen, grabbing onto him while he is in that vision of being tortured. I think it was that spirit coming after him it’s the same way the sound effects that play when Mia lets in that waterlogged spirit are the same sound effects be here when she’s talking to what she thinks it’s her mom.
I thought her pointing to empty space was the old man we see at the end. Her dialogue around the time she is speaking to Riley while she is possessed. She mentions some man that is coming for him that 'he'll split ya'. Then says 'there he is' like the spirit was standing in the room in that space. It would make sense no one could see him because only the person possessed can see the spirits.
@@TheSlaterZolo That is true. It could’ve been old man. Also the old man could be the main evil entity spiritually in charge of the hand or the one who gave the hand it’s ability in attempt to capture souls. I enjoy films where it leaves us to fill in the blanks and discuss other interpretations.
@aaronedson8188 Another video I watched where the directors were discussing the lore for their world. Apparently, they have like a 'bible' of deep lore surrounding the hand and how it came and so on. I hope that means we get more well written movies like this one.
I don’t know if you noticed but everytime we saw Mia’s “mother” we could hear a water sound Also at the end of the movie she appears more wet than before And the first spirit Mia saw looked just like a drowned lady so it definitely show that it wasn’t her mom but the first spirit she encounter when she goes beyond 90s

@@ZooKid13I think either she didn't scratch at the.door and her dad just said that so she didn't know it was suicide or the mom changed her mind too late
I think the spirit was just reading Mia's mind atp. Mia believed that her Mom had splinters beneath her fingernails because she wanted to live (didn't commit suicide), so the possessor just reflects that.
Glad to hear A24 agreeing the clauses of the strike. And good lord was this movie awesome. The first scene where Riley was possessed made me squirm in my seat. It reminded me of the mom banging her head against the ceiling in Hereditary.
We’re so lucky to live in the golden age of A24. Hopefully this is still just the start of a long life of such a creative, pro-worker distribution and production company. I can’t think of any other production company that makes me excited just seeing the logo… Neon maybe?
@@beansssss3847 I think what makes both movies so effective is that they effectively play on two of the more prominent and instinctive fears of human beings. 1. Demonic possession and evil spirits. 2. Massive head trauma lol.
rackaracka confirmed this: when a ghost takes you over they see the general room with the people in it and all the other spirits that have come when the hand is in use. when possessed mia points around the room the spirit is pointing out how in danger they are and laughing at them bc they don't know. the reason the audience doesn't see the spirit world when mia is possessed is bc SHE can't see it only the spirits. it honestly makes that scene so much creepier
The reason the mum looks waterlogged is because it's the bloated drowned woman who is pretending to be her. You see her in place of the mum at the end with the wheelchair. Also that is not claws protruding from under her nails, that is meant to be wood chips from clawing the door
It is her singing! The directors said she practiced and surprised them on set when they started shooting that scene, they talk about it in an interview
The old man in the hospital bed was another hint to Mia about what had happened to her. When we saw him earlier, like you said, he wasn't looking too good. When Mia sees him sitting up on the bed, it implys that he passed on as well.
What you all interpreted as sharp claws underneath Mia’s fake ghost mom’s nails, I understood those claw-like things to be the wood chips under her nails! It was mentioned earlier in the movie that there were claw marks on the inside of the door when her mother overdosed. Yet another perspective of Mia’s coping that may or may not be true, but I believe that was wood chips under the moms nails! Yet again another wonderful podcast. Dead meat is always one of the best parts of my week! 💀🥩
Saw it last night! TW suicide: I didn't notice the addiction as much as some suicide/depression stuff. Nobody seemed to care how sad and isolated Mia was. She tried to fit in at parties and was shunned and called a downer (her mother died!) Her father was distant and withheld the mother's note. I thought Mia's motivation was pretty much about talking to her mom - relieving her grief. The little brother Riley tells Mia, "You'll always have me and Jade". Jade kinda leans on Mia to be a sister to Riley, and is inattentive because she's dating Daniel. After the hand stuff begins Mia initially tries to stop Riley from doing it, but agrees to the 50 seconds. The spirit fakes being Mia's mom to reel her in, and all the shit goes down. This pisses off Jade, and Miranda Otto, who was the closest thing to a mom that Mia has. I thought it was a nasty spirit abusing Mia's isolation and grief, including faking Riley's torture. Anyhow, really great movie! I thought it was really unique. Chauncey is super cool! Thanks for the fun discussion about it. :)
I think they go hand and hand though. Like several people who are depressed and suicidal try to cope with not so great things. The way she describes her use of the hand the first time is very similar to how people describe drugs and also to be honest the way they style her towards the end of the movie really resembles a drug addict.
Love the shout out about how natural the cast felt. One of the big selling points to me when a friend told me about it was they emphasized how real the characters felt. The relationships felt real. Like I believed all these people were in each other’s lives before we come into the story. The fact that the big plot event doesn’t happen until almost an hour in surprised me because it didn’t feel like I was waiting for it. It was so good
Lots of little realistic touches. Like how Mia is casually always sleeping at Jade and Riley's house and they don't even explain it, but that is true to life. When I was a teenager so many kids spent more time at other peoples' homes than their own. I always had a bunch of couch surfers.
@@Demion83 Exactly. And things that are just so casual and familiar. Riley calling Mia when Jade doesn’t pick him up. Mia climbing on Hade’s bed and messing with her while she’s on the phone. The three-way hug with her Jade and Daniel where she calls him ex-boyfriend. Just the way they interact with each other inside jokes, teasing. It’s so natural and well done
My thought on Mia pointing at nothing while possessed is that she's pointing at the gross old man who eventually possesses Riley. To your point of perverted ghosts waiting for a "turn" with people, it seems each kid had a ghost that was particularly interested in taking them specifically. An old man longing to be young again, a slutty lady longing to be corrupted again for the first time, a drowned woman...still working on that one.
The directors do point out and they are making a scene video on UA-cam that those water sound effects that play when the woman possessed Mia are the same sound effects we hear when she’s talking to her mom
Mia keep getting strong hallucinations because she wouldn’t start using the hand, Ducketts brother said that after while the spirit will get week if you stop using it, but she kept using it
This movie deserves all the attention its getting I remember watching rackaracka rondald Mcdonald parody videos and they came back making an actual good horror movie 94% 82% audience score very unpredictable
When Mia's mom says, "He will be safe with us." I think that is when she knew she was being played and so threw herself in front of the car instead of him at the end.
@@dazaeminIt’s left intentionally ambiguous, but from the kangaroo, and Mia’s love for Riley, plus her “mother” being extremely waterlogged, and how far Jade was, I personally believe she threw herself into the road like Duckett.
Yeah, they are certainly fine with filmmakers taking shit to the absolute limits, without any studio interference (most big studios interfere quite a bit, and fuck up the original vision of a movie), but A24 doesn't make the movies. I love A24, but I'm over them getting so much credit for the great films they're willing to fund under their production company, as if they're the ones making the movies. They're not the filmmakers. That's not how production works. I love Raiders of the Lost Ark, for instance, but I don't attribute it to the amazing filmmaking of Paramount Pictures. That'd be absurd. I attribute it's amazingness to Stephen Spielberg's excellent directing capabilities. So, please stop with giving all of the credit to A24. Give them credit for their hands off approach. In fact, the more hands off, the less they even have to do with the final product anyway, so yeah, let's stop with this A24 getting all the credit shit.
I interpreted the “different” people that Mia sees as the same spirit just taking form of different things to be able to manipulate her more so like the little girl, the mom, and the old lady as the same spirit
Being Australian, this movie feels so much scarier as I think, “this damn hand is gonna appear on my coffee table some day” damn scary movie! Edit: I can't tell what's wrong with our doorknobs in my house or in the movie. To us your doorknobs are probably weird so yeah lol
It's because in America the doorknobs are so stupid big you can literally be holding something and use your knee to open the door. Having something require any amount of fine motor skills is very unamerican. (I wish I was joking) I say this as an US resident btw, and I do love our stupid big doorknobs, I just think it's funny how baffling doorknobs that require you to twist your hands are to us.
I could listen to Chauncey talk about labor rights and the history of the movement forever. We owe so much to organized labor, and it’s so sad to see what’s become of unions and worker collectivism. Far too many had to die for us to have weekends, child labor laws, 40 hour work weeks, overtime, etc.
@DubiousConsumption I've watched the movie and there are in fact 2 deaths: The guy at the beginning who killed himself and the main protagonist at the end when she died at the accident.
Re: the doorknob thing, super common especially in older houses to basically have small doorknobs up high so your kids can't open the doors. Very useful to keep small children out of places you don't want them, but I have legit given myself a black eye walking into a doorknob at eye level.
That actually makes so much sense and I'd recommend it, but I'm wondering how high it would be for disabled people. Midway? Just Braidwood because I'm imagining how big kids are now 😅
Another great podcast ep!! My read on the dad’s fate is that he wasn’t actually leaving the hospital but that was a depiction of his spirit “crossing over” or whatever because he was in the elevator going up whereas Mia was stuck in purgatory. Totally understand that that’s not definitive enough to count the kill though.
Oh man, I feel for James and Chelsea. The irony of a horror movie about addiction using metaphors for addiction being "watched" in theaters by addicts to social media who are, during the movie, getting their dopamine fix and not a single one of them caught themselves practicing what the movie was preaching. That irony is astounding
@@Polygonyall Meaning of profound: Something that is very deep and thought provoking. Meaning of reiteration: To state or do something over again. To you, which word best describes my statement? To me, my statement wasn't really all that deep just a repeat of what James and Chelsea were describing said in a different way. To me, that sounds more like reiteration rather than profundity
I took the scene of Mia’s dad going up in the elevator as him dying and ascending up to another plane in the afterlife meanwhile Mia is stuck in limbo due to her involvement with the hand spirits
I loved this movie so much. As an Australian, this movie felt so much like home. The dialogue, the relationships, the acting. I felt like i was 17 again 🫨 and i fell in love with every character straight away. I hope we see more Australian cinema getting the recognition it deserves. We have such an amazing pool of filmmakers here, and it would be amazing to see them in the global spotlight.
The two directors run a UA-cam channel called RackaRacka. They are legends of the platform. I'm so happy for them that they finally got to make a feature-length film. I have not seen it yet, but I cannot wait to see it.
32:00 Additionally, there is a truly unspoken hell of being a young person (under 30) and losing your mom. Especially in a traumatic way. It's been 3 years for me and I struggle heavily being around my friends (early 20s) who complain about their parents even though they can actually still hug them
For me, the ending was tragically happy (Idk what word I'm looking for here.) Mia spent the entire film "reaching out" to others and not getting the same thing back. Alternatively, because of her grief and the tragic nature of her mother's passing, she was not getting the response from who she wanted, her mother and the hand made that possible. In the end, she finally has someone reach back and talk to her; albeit, again, in a very tragic way. After writing this out I realize there's kind of nothing happy about it. She wants connections with the people she knows but they don't see Mia where she is now (the grief after her loss/the hospital ending scene.) She only feels this connection when uses the hand and the hand uses her back right up until the very last shot. Chilling.
She reaches out to other ppl but at the end she’s just a plaything for the Hand and the stupid game ppl make of it, i thought it was just very tragic for that, nothing happy about it that she killed her own dad and never see him again, her mom spirit was fake, her friends and adopted family all abandon and move on without her. Then again i guess it is the punishment she has for putting her step-brother at risk for her own gain trying to talk to her mother. Its very Greek Tragedy which i like The new guy using the hand doesn’t give a single shit about her he just thinks she’s some demon.
1:03:10 My theory is that because Mia went over 90 secs, the spirit/demon was able to somehow learn about about her because of how venerable she was. That same spirit pretends to be Mia's Mom when Riley touches the hand
My thoughts on why the spirits focused on Riley was that they wanted to get to Mia the whole time and they sensed how close she and Riley were and decided to use him to get to her.
Yeah that what I was thinking. The general rule of spirit possession most movies is they love the vulnerable ones. easy way to add to the collection is to hijack the hopeless.
This movie was heart-wrenching and I am looking forward to the prequel & sequel. Y'all are awesome and I agree that it is up to interpretation whether Mia was pushed by Jade or she jumped into traffic.Great podcast as usual and good to see Chauncey, as well as hear about the up coming project. B~)
yessssss, I'm so excited about Chauncey's show!! The pod's John Carpenter episode hooked me to Dead Meat, and I love Chauncey's UA-cam channel. I will absolutely be tuning in. Knowing that the Dead Meat team is growing and with such an important voice in the horror community is the positive news I needed to hear amongst all the doom and gloom.
I’m done taking shit from bad theater goers. Once the movie starts, if I see a phone screen light up, I count to ten, and if it’s not gone, I say quiet enough to not bother others but loud enough that people around can hear and “Put your phone away, please.” In a stern voice. Most people think they’ll never get repercussions from that stuff so when I ask they usually just put it away. But I agree that saying something to two rows of high schoolers would be intimidating 😬
When I went to Scream 6, I straight up whisper yelled at 5 kids that were sitting behind me to "Please shut the hell up". I was on edge and really anxious over something. I don't think I would have done it otherwise. But they did in fact shut the hell up. So it's a win
it either goes kinda okay or you get a bunch of teenagers laughing at you, which I’ve seen way more often than them listening (source: me and my friends were teens who would laugh at random adults scolding us, esp during horror movies or at restaurants). saying something to one or two individuals is one thing, but you won’t have much luck in getting a group of obnoxious teenagers, much less two rows of them, to do anything, they know they outnumber you and will make fun of you amongst themselves likely for the rest of the night.
My brother and I grew up watching RackaRacka. We live in the same suburbs as the twins and have met them multiple times. Especially when I worked at their local maccas! Haha. It’s super special to have a big movie like this filmed/set in our home town. Very surreal recognising streets, train stations, skate parks ect that we see everyday on the big screen. Super proud of Danny and Micheal
i guess a question/talking point i have for other viewers: something i noticed was the use of the color yellow in association to Mia; her nails are painted yellow both times we see her picking at her nail polish, she's often wearing yellow tops, and her weapon of choice towards the end were those classic yellow office scissors. (there may've been more instances, but i only saw it the one time and wasn't paying attention until i noticed the scissors). i don't know much about color theory, so i was wondering if anyone else noticed and/or had any ideas about this, or if maybe it was just coincidence.
i noticed this as well! i think that yellow symbolizes hope and optimism so i interpreted that as mia being so incredibly hopeful to connect with her mother from the other side. in horror settings it represents illness (physical and mental) and suffering etc. which also makes sense for this movie lol
i think the idea that the possession will go away on its own if given enough time is a pretty good metaphor for grief as well (or more accurately will fade over time but still stay with you, just not as prevalent)
The addiction metaphor for me, applies throughout the film. The protagonist is so lonely, finds a way to be involved and art of a group through the misuse of the hand, and eventually alienates herself from the people who she was closer with because of the hand. Also, there was a lot of imagery relating to the overabundance of phone use, people on their phones instead of engaging, whenever something crazy happens they were always observing the event through a phone lense. Phones almost being compared to drug use.
After watching Talk to Me the other night I’m so happy to finally watch this podcast My favorite thing about the hand is how much mystery surrounds it, the people don’t really know the rules they’re just going off their own experiences.
I thought the tree scene was bringing attention to how invisible things in life can really sway our branches. These things we've extended out and how the wind can knock them out. In the same way that Mia as being pushed and moved by the ghost of her 'mother.' That's my thoughts on it at least... or like James said it was just a nice connecting shot.
Also the sharp pieces under Mia’s mom’s nails is the wood from the door she clawed as she was overdosing in the room. During the dream sequence between Mia and Daniel, Mia’s hands also showed the wood under her nails as she envisioned her mom and dad in the hallway.
The sharp ends of mias moms nails are wood splinters from her scratching the door before she died. This movie was very good and I enjoyed the podcast just as much!
i never expected to hear mention of the Wobblies/IWW and the People's World on one of my favorite podcasts! Amazing! i love the intersectional conversations. Another great episode! Thanks!
There's also the fact that Mia was in the hospital a long time, Riley had to recover and that would take months so probably someone of the group went for the hand during that time and end up in Greece.
I was very sure Mia had died though? And that she saw months pass in short flashes as she went into the spirit realm. Then perhaps even a year later she randomly gets called up when someone uses the Hand again. I didn’t expect her to be in the hospital,
This was an extremely accurate representation of what growing up in Australian suburbs was like growing up, at least from my Millennial perspective. I knew a few Mias for sure. Hell it feels like I went to school with most of the characters in this movie.
About the doorknobs, those ones you've seen are mostly in older houses and also are used as backdoors/laundry doors, but otherwise, we tend to have normal-height and sized doorknobs. I think they're an old British influence and not really common anymore. 🙂
Loved this episode. I think regarding the claws under the mothers nails, I think it’s supposed to be splinters of wood from the door she died behind? I think they mention early on that when they found her mother, she had been clawing at the door as she OD’d
“tales from production hell” sounds AMAZING to me!! my favorite part of the kill counts & podcasts are the behind the scenes discussions, so this will be invaluable to me and so many others!
I loved this movie so much and the cast was fantastic. And as an Australian though a different part, it got close to home in some of the ways the characters acted. But with the kangaroo, it can be pretty common and a lot of roads will have warning signs to look out for, because they can appear suddenly (especially at night)
Did you guys also catch how Mia seemed to be coming down with something in the beginning of the movie. Both her dad and Miranda Otto mentioned it. This was never expanded on and it seemed to go away after she first encountered the hand.
How I interpreted the scene with Mia on the freeway is the other end of the opening where she was possessed but she’s got no idea that she is In the opening scene, Duckett stabs his brother than him. So Mia has probably succumbed to the possession and she hurls herself into the car and Jade may have swooped in right at the last second but it was too late for Mia
i was hoping to see you guys mention the foreshadowing in the beginning where duckett tells cole "pop says you're gonna hurt a lot of people" and cole ignores it while taking duckett out the room. cole even tells him "pop's dead". this scene doesn't make sense early on and is easy to miss but it makes you realize that duckett and mia were in similar situations by dealing with demons using the faces of their loved ones. still loved the video and hearing what you guys thought!!!
Finally checked this out, loved it! You talked about the drug comparisons to the game they played with the hand, but I was reminded of the pass out game some friends and I played in our late teens and early twenties. Basically one would hold their breath and have someone put them in a choke hold that would make them pass out for a few seconds, and depending on the person they would do some weird stuff (like with me I woke up to people laughing because I apparently was snorting like a pig lol). I almost wonder if that was an inspiration for this? And don’t worry, my friends and I grew out of that stupid game lol don’t try it kiddos
To think I only found Dead Meat because I was looking up how many people Jason had killed in the movies to where you guys are now. It makes me so happy.
I just really love you guys so much. One of my absolute favorite things in the whole world is listening to this podcast after seeing a fucking amazing movie like Talk To Me was. Thank you guys for everything you do 😭😭 Also, random side note, I'm from the foothills region of Colorado, so many deer around, everywhere, all the time, and we're taught that you just have to let the deer hit your car because its too dangerous to try to slam on your brakes to avoid it. Real fun stuff!
I was so hoping to see if Chelsea said anything about color theory since Mia kept being associated with yellow. Her two major outfits were yellow, highlights, gold (yellow) jewelry and the scissors were yellow. I was hoping there was something there! Great movie and review!
My interpretation of Possessed!Mia pointing at the empty corner was it was related to her talking about the spirit that likes Riley and wants to be in him. She also talks about “he’ll split you open”. Later on when Riley is possessed I think it was this spirit who had triangulated onto Riley (has been hanging around him) and he does try to split him open when he starts self-injuring.
About cookie the dog and the smell, I noticed the mom points out the smell in Riley‘s room, and I feel like it was a hint that the spirits are following him around, because there is this common trope in horror where demonic spirits leave a rotten smell in the places they are hanging out. it happens in the conjuring and in other movies.
That tree shot to me kinda mirrored the scene with Riley and the spirits. Because the branch is still and the leaves are rustling hard. Or the branch really reminded me of the hand. Idk what it means though? Just guessing
Yo I'd like to say as an Autsralian (from Adelaide so not sure about the other capital cities) we don't actually have kangaroos in the suburbs very often. It's actually to the point of rarety where it gets put on the news. Might be different for Sydney and Brisbane as they are more tropical
I interpreted the end scene of Mia's dad going into the bright elevator to indicate that he had died but was going on to some sort of afterlife. He never had a direct interaction with the hand and before being stabbed and, from his perspective, had no 'unfinished business'.
I really hate how this film seems to attract people that don't respect movies. I know it's anecdotal but I also had a theater with a bunch of Instagram teens and I even had an old lady in front of me with the brightest watch ever. To make it weirder, some of my other friends went to other screens the opening weekend and had the same issues. I just don't get why people are going to movie openings if they are not going to watch it!

rackaracka confirmed this: when a ghost takes you over they see the general room with the people in it and all the other spirits that have come when the hand is in use. when possessed mia points around the room the spirit is pointing out how in danger they are and laughing at them bc they don't know. the reason the audience doesn't see the spirit world when mia is possessed is bc SHE can't see it only the spirits. it honestly makes that scene so much creepier
It makes her “RUN. RUN. RUN” sequence so much more chilling.
mias "mom" telling her about her dad was such masterful misdirection and horror. this movie gave me goosebumps six times with its intensity.
The reason the mum looks waterlogged is because it's the bloated drowned woman who is pretending to be her. You see her in place of the mum at the end with the wheelchair. Also that is not claws protruding from under her nails, that is meant to be wood chips from clawing the door
Surprised they didn’t catch all this while watching a second time while also taking notes lmao
@@jonahjames8915they said there were two rows of kids talking tho so I would be super distracted if I was them lmao
It is her singing! The directors said she practiced and surprised them on set when they started shooting that scene, they talk about it in an interview
The dad getting into the elevator could also represent that he's going up to heaven while Mia is stuck in limbo, maybe.
This makes sense - i read as him going back to the living world after being close to death
The directors do point out and they are making a scene video on UA-cam that those water sound effects that play when the woman possessed Mia are the same sound effects we hear when she’s talking to her mom
a drowned woman wanting to breathe oxygen again 😂
Nice theory
@@navimanaLOL
Mia keep getting strong hallucinations because she wouldn’t start using the hand, Ducketts brother said that after while the spirit will get week if you stop using it, but she kept using it
1:20:22 I felt like her nails, resembled her mom trying to scratch down the door from when she took those sleeping pills
This movie deserves all the attention its getting I remember watching rackaracka rondald Mcdonald parody videos and they came back making an actual good horror movie 94% 82% audience score very unpredictable
the fact that mia can’t let go of her grief over her mom, but also can’t let go of the hand, is thematic genius
When Mia's mom says, "He will be safe with us." I think that is when she knew she was being played and so threw herself in front of the car instead of him at the end.
I think so too. Also, the deer appeared again, implying that she couldn’t put Riley out of his misery. Same as the deer.
@@jonahjames8915deer? It was definitely a kangaroo lol
@@jonesy1221 lmao ur right I was trippin
I thought the sister pushed her
@@dazaeminIt’s left intentionally ambiguous, but from the kangaroo, and Mia’s love for Riley, plus her “mother” being extremely waterlogged, and how far Jade was, I personally believe she threw herself into the road like Duckett.
A24 sure does love its head trauma
😭😭😭oof
(I wish I was joking)
I say this as an US resident btw, and I do love our stupid big doorknobs, I just think it's funny how baffling doorknobs that require you to twist your hands are to us.
pssy
I could listen to Chauncey talk about labor rights and the history of the movement forever. We owe so much to organized labor, and it’s so sad to see what’s become of unions and worker collectivism. Far too many had to die for us to have weekends, child labor laws, 40 hour work weeks, overtime, etc.
The labor movement and support for unions and socialism and even communism are at an all time high though, it's a cause to rejoice
Hopefully it is covered on the Kill Count when the Blu Ray is revealed.
I would like that
That would be cool!
It hopefully should be regardless of whether the strikes are still on as A24 agreed to terms
Isn't the minimum criteria of a Kill Count is that it needs more than 2 kills?
@DubiousConsumption I've watched the movie and there are in fact 2 deaths:
The guy at the beginning who killed himself and the main protagonist at the end when she died at the accident.
That irony is astounding
me when im 14 and deep
@@Polygonyall Meaning of profound: Something that is very deep and thought provoking.
Meaning of reiteration: To state or do something over again.
To you, which word best describes my statement?
To me, my statement wasn't really all that deep just a repeat of what James and Chelsea were describing said in a different way. To me, that sounds more like reiteration rather than profundity
That clock behind James kept tripping me up. It looked like he had an orange swinging earring the whole time
😂😂 glad I wasn't the only one! I thought oooh James looks funky!
The hospital scene were Riley was banging his head against the tile wall and licking his blood was brutal and freaky and I loved it!!!!
Can’t wait!! Love Chauncey already. She’ll bring SO MUCH to the table. ❤❤❤
Its very Greek Tragedy which i like
The new guy using the hand doesn’t give a single shit about her he just thinks she’s some demon.
The previous episode was one of my favorites. Glad to have her back!
1:03:10 My theory is that because Mia went over 90 secs, the spirit/demon was able to somehow learn about about her because of how venerable she was. That same spirit pretends to be Mia's Mom when Riley touches the hand
From making videos in the suburbs of Adelaide to directing an A24 horror. So proud of Danny and Michael. Aussie represent! 🇦🇺
I love Chauncey, and the new show sounds so amazing! I can't wait!!
Excited to see more of Chauncey !
I like how how the hand itself and a lot of what happens in the movie could be interpreted as a metaphor for drug use
Crazy to think this film was made by the same guys who did the Ronald McDonald videos.
If you squint during the intense chaotic scenes you can tell lol

I’m so glad you mentioned the shunting! Literally the first thing I thought of when that scene came up, followed by the digestion scene from Nope
I already figured it would be good cause A24 hasn't disappointed me yet with their horror. They get unsettling and disturbing down VERY well =)
And they've already green-lit a sequel, which is in early development
Have you seen Tusk? I didn't enjoy that but maybe it was your jam. Rare A24 miss
@@rsdawn22 I didn't like Tusk but it still was genuinely disturbing and nasty.
i guess a question/talking point i have for other viewers: something i noticed was the use of the color yellow in association to Mia; her nails are painted yellow both times we see her picking at her nail polish, she's often wearing yellow tops, and her weapon of choice towards the end were those classic yellow office scissors.
I was wondering this too!!!
I haven't finished the episode yet but Chauncey is cool as fuck? Love to see her again!
i think the idea that the possession will go away on its own if given enough time is a pretty good metaphor for grief as well (or more accurately will fade over time but still stay with you, just not as prevalent)
So nice to see Chauncey again 🥰
The addiction metaphor for me, applies throughout the film. The protagonist is so lonely, finds a way to be involved and art of a group through the misuse of the hand, and eventually alienates herself from the people who she was closer with because of the hand.
Also, there was a lot of imagery relating to the overabundance of phone use, people on their phones instead of engaging, whenever something crazy happens they were always observing the event through a phone lense. Phones almost being compared to drug use.
After watching Talk to Me the other night I’m so happy to finally watch this podcast
My favorite thing about the hand is how much mystery surrounds it, the people don’t really know the rules they’re just going off their own experiences.
I thought the tree scene was bringing attention to how invisible things in life can really sway our branches. These things we've extended out and how the wind can knock them out. In the same way that Mia as being pushed and moved by the ghost of her 'mother.'
That's my thoughts on it at least... or like James said it was just a nice connecting shot.
Also the sharp pieces under Mia’s mom’s nails is the wood from the door she clawed as she was overdosing in the room.
During the dream sequence between Mia and Daniel, Mia’s hands also showed the wood under her nails as she envisioned her mom and dad in the hallway.
Love Chauncey! Omg so happy she's gonna be having a show on the channel!
The sharp ends of mias moms nails are wood splinters from her scratching the door before she died.
This movie was very good and I enjoyed the podcast just as much!
Scary Movie 6 having a scene where the characters suck on the toes of a plastered ceramic foot to allow the spirit to enter them
I just love you guys. Saying your family and craft grow is so inspiring. You guys are always positive. Keep at it!
as someone whos finding less and less kill count episodes i havent seen i am THRILLED to hear about the new show. How exciting
i never expected to hear mention of the Wobblies/IWW and the People's World on one of my favorite podcasts! Amazing! i love the intersectional conversations.
I didn’t expect her to be in the hospital,
@@GuineaPigEveryday I think what they mean is, she was in a coma for many months in hospital and then a few months later she died never waking up
This was an extremely accurate representation of what growing up in Australian suburbs was like growing up, at least from my Millennial perspective.
The things poking out from under the “moms” nails are bits of wood, like splinters. In the movie Mia mentioned her mom was scratching at the door.
So happy you guys are covering this movie! I was blown away by it!
I'm so glad Chauncey is back on the pod! ❤ I can't wait for the new show she's working on
I loved this movie so much and the cast was fantastic. And as an Australian though a different part, it got close to home in some of the ways the characters acted.
But with the kangaroo, it can be pretty common and a lot of roads will have warning signs to look out for, because they can appear suddenly (especially at night)
The real dead meat is the friends we made along the way
Actually what Riley was watching on the phone is actually fellow UK UA-cam group "Sidemen" who they're really good friends with
Did you guys also catch how Mia seemed to be coming down with something in the beginning of the movie. Both her dad and Miranda Otto mentioned it. This was never expanded on and it seemed to go away after she first encountered the hand.
How I interpreted the scene with Mia on the freeway is the other end of the opening where she was possessed but she’s got no idea that she is
In the opening scene, Duckett stabs his brother than him.
When they thought KSI and the sidemen were the AUSTRAILIAN VERSION OF WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONARE LMAOOO😂😂
Any time I see a new podcast episode uploaded I get a little burst of serotonin, love you guys and can’t wait for Silver Scream!
Talk To Me is probably one of my favorite horror movies the limbo scene was so terrifying
To think I only found Dead Meat because I was looking up how many people Jason had killed in the movies to where you guys are now. It makes me so happy.
‘Skeleton’ by Dan Kanvis has been on my playlist ever since I saw Influencer!
Yes!!
I just really love you guys so much. One of my absolute favorite things in the whole world is listening to this podcast after seeing a fucking amazing movie like Talk To Me was. Thank you guys for everything you do 😭😭
Also, random side note, I'm from the foothills region of Colorado, so many deer around, everywhere, all the time, and we're taught that you just have to let the deer hit your car because its too dangerous to try to slam on your brakes to avoid it. Real fun stuff!
I was so hoping to see if Chelsea said anything about color theory since Mia kept being associated with yellow. Her two major outfits were yellow, highlights, gold (yellow) jewelry and the scissors were yellow. I was hoping there was something there! Great movie and review!
Looking forward to seeing more of Chauncey on the channel!
There is also a lot of door stuff. On second watch I noticed so many times characters don't close doors.
I wish you guys could see how excited I am whenever a new podcast goes live❤
Welcome to the team, Chauncey! The new show sounds great
The “little claws”coming out if Mia’s mom’s nails are sprinters of wood. Remember she clawed at the door.
