That's what TVs/computer monitors use--RGB I just got ahold of some phthalo blue red shade and a phthalo blue green shade. I haven't used them yet, so this video is so timely. Thank you so much for making these.

Good to remember those undertones. I bought 3 daniel smith paints to try and mix. When I mix the cadmium yellow with the quinacradone magenta, I get a blood orange. But when I mix the yellow with the indanthrone blue, I get a dull olive drab. The blue and magenta however make a beautiful violet.
This is SO helpful Michelle…at least for my western paints. Staying up till 2am to ask one of my tutors why I can’t get the pretty blue-green she gets with, supposedly, the same paint chips. All I can figure by watching this, is that MY Indigo chips (which actually look more like a bright ultramarine or even your cobalt-depending on how many chips I use)-have some RED in them, which are dulling my attempts to make blue-green. At first we thought it was my traditional yellow chips that were contaminated. With Chinese chips, especially yellow, we run the risk of mold-because of the natural pigments & natural binder..so I’m told. THIS can contaminate the color. I had one tutor run guilt trips on me that mold in my yellow chips is a sign I’m not practicing. It’s NOT, in fact the longer it stays wet, the more likelihood of mold. I purchased some 91% alcohol and treat my chips as soon as I get them..haven’t had mold since. It also STINKS when I gets moldy. I also chip. Off much smaller pieces of the dry yellow chunk, that way I only risk small amounts of this more expensive pigment. As for Western paints..I have a small set of professional western pans and I got that very bright orange red..but no real orange. I have a warmer and cooler yellow-which should I use to get that color orange which would be perfect for a “fusion” painting I sketched with Fall Mandarins? I think I’ll just go play with it..I was thinking of just using my Marie’s on the mandarins, because I have that color-it’s just not as “alive” as the western orange. Heaven knows I’ve got plenty of Xuan paper scraps to try out colors on 🤷🏼♀️😂. I need a decent paper cutter..I think I’ll ask for one for Christmas..I’m tearing a LOT of expensive Xuan to pieces with my “traditional bamboo knife..😂 Sorry…it’s an ADD kind of evening…😂
Thank you so much for the color mixing instructions!!!! I am a beginner advancing onward. I find color and color mixing fascinating. Today I came home with 8 new tubes of paint! Yeah! Anyway, I felt very confident when I was looking at all the tubes because I have watched enough of your color mixing videos to actually KNOW what I was looking at and could more properly choose what I wanted. Before watching your channel I struggled beyond belief with what on earth I should purchase. So I got pan sets which are fine, wonderful actually. But now I want to do more "on-purpose" mixing. Before, every time I came up with a color it was just by chance and then I couldn't seem to replicate it if I didn't make copious notes. All this to say, thank you from the bottom of my heart. ♥

Great video. The science behind it all does get very involved, but it's essential to know the properties of the colours you will be using when planning a painting, and so choosing your palette. You do amazing work, I am always looking at your subscriber count and watching it creep to that 100k mark -you have gained 2k (I think) in just the past few weeks since I subbed. I expect to see that silver YT plaque in every video!
I understood what, a red shade blue or a blue red shade, was when I first tried to mix purple with phthalo blue and got a brownish mud. I would dare to say, without risking being pedantic ☺️, that the way the word shade is used in this context can be considered as technical jargon, there's no need for trolls to remove dust and cobwebs from their dictionaries.

I wish I had seen this video before working on my blue mountains. I mixed my phthalo blue with raw umber (which now I understand has a yellow matiz) and it turned my mountains green :(

For instance, I read that quinacridone colors were originally used in the automobile industry for painting cars. Other terms include, pyrrol, cadmium, pthalo, etc. That would be so helpful. 😊

Red/green shade is a way of categorising tiny variations within a pigment. Phthalo is overall cooler (greener) than ultramarine which is warmer and more red. Therefore even a Phthalo blue red shade is likely to be cooler than any ultramarine.
10:39 A warm red ultra marine? Isn't french ultra marine in general cool, purpleish? Doesn't the red tone make it cooler compaired to the left green shaded ultra marine?🤯 I must have missunderstood it all...🙄
You haven't misunderstood Brita. The issue is that technically there's no such thing as a warm or cool blue. Blue sits between the two primaries, red and yellow. They are both warm colours. So there's no firm agreement about what constitutes a warm blue. In fashion the yellow leaning blues are often described as warm, but in art it tends to be the other way round. As long as you understand the properties of the colour you are choosing that's what's important 😊
Slightly incorrect. Green is not the "real" third primary color. Red, green, and blue are the primary colors in additive color mixing, where colors are mixed by different light sources. Think light bulbs emitting different color lights or the pixels in a TV or LCD screen. This is where RGB, red, green blue belongs. In subtractive color mixing, which is, when you are mixing pigments, the primary colors are magenta, cyan and yellow.
I don't believe I said 'real', the very idea of primary colours is subjective of course, we just do what works best for human situations. Magenta cyan and yellow are simply versions of red yellow blue, printers would add black of course.

Earth colours tend to be a good price, Burnt umber is always useful, and French or red shade ultramarine granulates heavily.

A layer of transparent pink will counteract the green, as it's the opposite colour. If you ever get green by accident, add a little pink.
