I like these tips. I think I do this too....but not always with a brush. Sometimes I use a bit of paper towel or kitchen towel, preferably very slightly damp. I will try it with a soft brush next time.
That was magnificent!!! I sort of did this technique for soft skin tones, but your explanations took it to the next level for me! Also I think I finally understood why I keep getting puddles and uneven results when I pre-wet the paper. It was because I apply the paint with a too wet brush, but also because I use hot pressed paper (in order to go with color pencils on top). I must confess I don't know how to get precission, the corret tones (because watercolor dries lighter) or dark areas without color pencils or gouache on top of the watercolors so I avoid using cold pressed paper altogether.

Hi Michele, great and accurate video as usual. Yes, I do use this technique and I actually learned it from a let's make art watercolor video, a Sarah Cray's tutorial ( I don't remember which one exactly). It's a great technique for fixing unwanted hard edges or blending variegated washes while the painting is still wet. It's a bit like the blending technique used with acrylics, isn't it? You're right when you suggest to have more than one brush at hand, I always end up with wetting the one I was determined to keep dry...
Take it with a grain of salt, 'cause I'm struggling to remember which video was it... But as I haven't watched that many, I think it was the rainstorm tutorial... The technique wasn't explained so in detail she used it for some problem fixing... I deducted it could have wider ranges of application and from then I'm using it
I haven't seen this technique before. I do know that Louise De Masi (who is a wonderful painter and teacher) talks constantly about hard edges vs soft edges and how to create or avoid them. My understanding is that the way to avoid hard edges when working wet in wet is to wet the entire area eg if working on a petal, wet the entire petal, then paint on your colour and run the brush up the leading edge. This is a great way to work but can be tricky to get the results you want, particularly for beginners.. I feel that your technique would produce instantly great results even for beginners and would be a time saver in that you are not always waiting for large areas to dry.

It depends on the situation, a damp brush works too, especially on plain paper.

Cotton wool works too, and unlike paper it won't fall apart :-)

Louise is right, where practical that's the safest way, but sometimes you need to adjust, or may forget to wet first.

Michelle. You have a LOT of pulp litter on your samples. Maybe use cotton paper ? It looks too bumpy.
Ah, not being rich, I keep the expensive stuff for my own work, as long as I can demonstrate the technique effectively I don't worry too much :-)
