Thanks for featuring a sunny border. So many videos focus on a shady jungle style

It’s so cold! Summer? We had about 3 hours of summer this year in Cheshire. 🥲 Anything that did get going is either eaten alive by slugs n snails, chewed up by squirrels or dug up by foxes and squirrels this year. My poor plants are shivering drowned rats. Ah well lets hope global warming happens in England😂btw Yours is the best garden I’ve seen in UK of all the tropical YT channels. I’m envious how lush it looks in every video, throughout the seasons. I’m so jealous

Hi and thank you. No need to be jealous or envious I’ve had many years of struggle to make the garden look nice but I’ve tried to adapt it over many years to find what works for me in my location with my soil type. Maybe try and add a few more plants that look good whatever the weather.
      Cheers.

Hi Tiki Tropical. Is your Cordyline Torbay Dazzler in a pot

    • @tikitropicals65

Hi. No. I have 2 planted in the garden. Both in full sun with free draining soil. I protect if temps start to get below -5 ish depending on the duration of cold.
Saying that theirs one planted just round the corner from me against a south facing wall and it’s as big as mine and never had protection.
      Cheers.

Brilliant tour and garden. I have a big dog who makes dens etc. So have a lot to consider. But it's lovely to see layering of borders and palms. Helps to have inspiration.

Cheers. Might be worth using some robust evergreen shrubs to help with the dog. I have a small Beagle so not to much damage for me.

@tikitropicals65 yeah I've got some big enough for (Belgian shepherd) to hide under next to a wall he can dig and make a den. Fatsia japonica, phormium etc 😂.
I have big 130L containers with gunnera, bamboo, and a butia capitata. I am in the process of putting some smaller palms into the ground and some fargesia. Slowly filling out around them will be nice as time goes by.😊

Hi Tiki Tropical. I have recently got my hand on a Manihot. I will also keep mine in a pot. What planting medium would you recommend for keeping it in a pot

    • @tikitropicals65
      @tikitropicals65  3 місяці тому

So from what I’ve read Manihot can be fussy when repotting and can droop or lose leaves even if you get the potting mix correct but then can recover after a sulk.
So for me I’m going to use a free drainage mix of compost perlite and grit. So it holds moisture in the compost but drains freely when I water. Hopefully this works. I will also add some slow release fertiliser.

I am going to have a look at my border again at the end of the season. I need to make some changes. I am tired of waiting for things to kick into growth. Thank you for the informative video

Thank you. I used to grow loads of tenders but just didn’t like the bare patches in winter and constantly wishing for growth. I’ve now evolved to have a garden that gives me much more all year interest but on the Negative side i do miss growing lots of the tenders. It’s about balance. Cheers.

Good overview. You mentioned cannas & bananas not growing as well. Well I live in panhandle of NW Florida zone 8b/9a and I’ve noticed I have some bananas that seem to be slow to push out plus my canna musafolia are only about 4 ft tall right now usually taller than that by now. I can’t figure out why

Not really sure why you’re not getting good growth from Cannas and bananas in your climate. I suppose all you can do is feed and water well and hopefully you have the kind of weather you need for good growth. This I why I don’t grow as many of these plants now as want them to be the stars of the display in mid summer but if they don’t grow well you get no display. It’s now about finding all year round interest for me. Cheers.

@@tikitropicals65 thanks for feedback. The bananas that are not coming back well I did not provide as much frost protection plus they were in an open area. I do have many that are doing ok and actually have one just setting a bloom for a bunch of bananas. I do grow other plants and palms similiar to yours and they are doing fantastic in this warm humid weather

It really has been a slow start for some of the plants, I've lost my salvia amistads this year, which I find interesting as they made it through the -11 that we had last year, but I guess it's the constant rain this year, even though I'm on well draining sandy soil. I have a jubea chilensis, but to be honest, it doesn't ever look good, I'm not sure if that's just the damage from last winter or I'm not caring for it properly. Thanks for sharing what your planting ideas

Hi. I had 3 Salvia Amistad planted next to each other in a group. 2 died this winter and one survived so sometimes it just doesn’t make sense with plants. I always take cuttings in water for back up.
Jubaea Chilense is a slow growing palm in normal circumstances. Yours faced a harsh winter that would have set it back and then this year we haven’t really had any sun or heat which this Palm loves.

@tikitropicals65 I had taken cuttings, but White Fly got them. Hopefully we will get some sun soon and it will start to recover

I feel your pain. I am constantly fighting with slugs and snails this year. I feel like they are out to destroy the garden.

    • @tikitropicals65

Yeah it’s been tough with the slugs and snails which are thriving in these wet conditions. I’ve tried to grow less plants that they love to eat but they seem to try other plants that they never bothered with before. They love Alstroemeria so every night I’m out there trying to pick slugs off them but still can’t stop the damage. It’s a tough season but if nothing else hopefully we can learn and adapt our plants and gardens to make it easier in the future.

Hi mate your planted cycas revoluta looks amazing. What's the coldest temp it's survived. I'm in Hull, there not cheap and I'm not sure I dare risk one outside
