Today I had the pleasure of going to Northampton to visit Joes garden and tropical pond. Joe and his brother of Shadelandscapes created this absolute gem of an ecosystem pond which gave me so much inspiration for my own garden. For more pond videos check out their work on instagram @ shadelandscapes Honestly my video doesn’t do their work justice.

Thank you for the shout out and sharing of my channel! Very impressed with your plans being put down on paper. You've certainly got a lot of work to get done but it'll be a fun journey for both yourself and us following along.
Thanks for sharing your plans. Looking forward to watching this develop
I think your plans for the new design will be great. I love that feeling of walking thru a pathway, surrounded by beautiful foliage, then to arrive at a spot, such as a seat or a bridge, where you can pause and just enjoy the surroundings. Would be nice to see a little more colour too. Just my thoughts. Your garden is lovely, and your plans will make it even better...
Really like the garden plan, loving the yin yang elements, I think you've made the right decision to put the pond and stream where you can see it from the house. I get so much enjoyment watching the birds using ours. And I'm g,ad I'm not the only one who keeps changing my mind, we're completely landscaping the front garden this year, I come up with something, Steve's then priced and drawn a plan and I'm ahh actually I've changed my mind, he gets so frustrated with me 😂 and we're changing our centre circle to more of a kidney bean shape and probably coming more away from the circular lawn. You've got an amazing amount of work ahead of you, and I look forward to watching it progress
Wow it’s really beginning to take shape. Going to enjoy every update you bring on this overhaul and redesign. Cant wait to see the plants you bring and arrangements. Hood you spend a little time sharing about soil preparation and what type mix you use. Congrats & best success
I nearly didn't watch as your videos have become a bit 'samey'. But OMG talk about levelling up a few grades. Impressive design and thought process. So excited for you and me, as i get to watch it get done. I realise it will take quite a while, but. Its still exciting and it came through on the video how enthusiastic you have become. You must be chomping at the bit. Shame someone can't throw a wheelbarrow of cash to ease it along.
Hi mate, I love your ideas ❤. Don’t suppose I can pay you to design mine, I’m useless and have no design skills 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hi. To be honest lots of people struggle with how to design their garden. If you need any advice you can message me through Facebook or instagram. Cheers
Good luck and it sounds a great plan 🫡👌👌👌👌
Thank you
Your garden is amazing now. Can't wait to see it after all that work 💪👍
Thank you.
What plant is in the pot closest to the Cordyline at 11:54 please?
Hi it’s Daphniphyllum Macropodum
@ Thank you
Great video.... Garden looks great even in February.. thats a big project, and no doubt look amazing when finished👍
Hi and thank you. Yeah it’s a bigger project than I planned but if I’m going to make a mess of my garden I may as well get it the way I want it. Cheers for the comment.
@tikitropicals65 They do say... you can't do a job without making a mess 😀
I think u r very Brave to be so radical with the changes...Good luck with it all ..and i love all the proposed Improvement xxx❤
Thank you. I’m not sure I’m brave but it is a little nervy making changes that may not work the way I envisioned. It helps I’m a landscaper so I’m used to creating gardens from nothing. Cheers
Looks like a really design and look forward to watching your progress. There is a pond guy I have been watching recently on You Tube which has given me some ideas one is that I was thinking of creating a dry stream so when it rains it flows from one pond to another. Do like your idea of the bridges sounds great.
Thank you. The dry stream is something I thought about as well. Hopefully the streams and bridges add the extra interest that I’m searching for. Cheers
Garden is lovely Never happy as a gardener 😂 Lots of hard work 😁good luck
Thank you. Yeah lots of hard work ahead but hopefully that will make it more rewarding in the end. Cheers
Plans sound amazing will make the garden bigger. Think you should hide the pond from view until you reach it on the path. Love the stepping stone idea 👍 ps where did you buy the urn water feature from pls?
Hi and thank you. I may find that when I start planting I feel it looks better with the pond more hidden I really won’t know until I get nearer to that stage. The water feature came from a local garden centre near me. Cheers
@10:58 might I ask what that plant in the pot with the large leaves is just to the left of your new path?
Hi. It’s a Rhododendron Suoilenhense. Cheers
Good idea the pond in the lawn and stretched to the back with a waterfall (and the bridges). Looking forward to see the progress!
Hi and thank you. It’s the ponds and streams that I’m most excited and nervous about. It will be a real learning curve but should change the whole feel of the garden. Cheers
Really looking forward to your progress
Hi. So am I to be honest. I’m itching to get started. I will keep you all updated. Cheers
Great video! Look forward to watching your progress with this project. Will definitely take the garden to the next level. 🌴🌴
Thank you. I can’t wait to get started to be honest. Cheers
@tikitropicals65 I'm the same when I've got an idea in my head. I'm going to do a few videos of my garden this season. May be of interest as we live in the same sort of area. 😎🌴
love the new plan really will suit the space from the looks and sounds of it, looking forward to see the pond and stream as well!
Thank you. I think it will give me so much more planting opportunities from the pond margins to the free draining raised rocky beds.
@tikitropicals65 absolutely! i think the water feature will really transform the area as well. since i got the water into my 2 large ponds ive noticed i spend alot more time in that area, lol especially with the morning coffee haha. great stuff your plans should look epic 😎
Look forwards to seeing the pond in the old lawn.
Cheers. The pond in the look lawn is the bit I’m most concerned about. I’m struggling to visualise it at the minute but I’m sure it will evolve during the build. Thanks.
sorry but ..how is it possible to have a tropical garden like this in the uk? i live in italy and if i tried to do something like that, in the winter 80% of the plants would die!
Hi. It’s about the choice of plants. Most of the plants look Tropical but come from parts of the world that also have cold winters so they can get through U.K. winters. Some get protected in a greenhouse. I have lots of amazing U.K. tropical gardens on my channel so it’s more than possible. Cheers.
Gardening was so easy when I lived in the tropics. Now living in Norwich I’m about to embark on structuring a small tropical garden.
Hi and thanks for the comment. Tropical style gardening in the U.K. can have its challenges for sure but can also be very rewarding on a sunny summer day. Lots of Tropical gardens around the Norwich area so plenty of inspiration for you. Enjoy the process. Cheers
Красиво. Спасибо за ваш труд. С уважентем из Сибири
Thank you
It looks totally amazing!! Love it all.
Thank you.
Thank you for your hard work and creativity, we are watching your channel with pleasure in Russia, Anapa, the Black Sea coast. 8 USDA frost resistance zone.
Hi and thank you for watching.
Hello, you have a beautiful garden 😍 great that your palm trees survive the winter without protection 👍 I have to protect my palm trees in winter, in February 2021 I had -19 ⁰C 🥶 Best wishes Peter 🌴
Hi Peter and thank you. I don’t envy your weather but I do appreciate your dedication to growing palm trees in such a cold climate. Thanks for watching.
Greetings from the beautiful, warm and sunny-all-year-round -- had to rub that in 😆😁-- Caribbean island of Barbados 🌞🌞🌞. Very inspirational; well worth the time, effort and money put into building such a wonderful space. Look forward to seeing more similar gardens. And of course, the Koi pond addition is the "icing on the cake." Amazing! Blessings to you and all those you love.
Hi. It still amazes me that people from beautiful tropical locations like yours watch videos of our efforts to try and create a little bit of paradise in our cold wet climate. Thanks for watching.
Yep, it’s definitely that time of the year, especially when I get enthusiastic about my small patch. Unfortunately it’s still too nippy to work in it as I found out last Friday. Thank you sharing such wonderful selection of hardy plants. I’m going to look around for some of these mentioned in the video. Most of my patch is facing a NNW direction which allows sun in April, however, the area I’m scheming to open up will receive sun a lot earlier. 2 of the background plants are arriving soon.
Hi and thank you. The weather is cold and miserable but it is a great time for planning and researching so when spring comes we can get the jobs done and hopefully spend summer enjoying our gardens. Cheers
What's the name of that big fan shaped plant? It's gorgeous
Hi. I’m not sure which plant you mean. If you could tell me at what time you see it on the screen I could probably tell you. Cheers
@tikitropicals65 thanks for your response. It's at 7:18 and it's on the left of the screen
Hi. It’s a Gunnera. Either sold as Gunnera Manicata or Gunnera Cryptica. It like sunny but wet conditions. Grows well in boggy soils or near water ideally. Harder to get hold of now though. Cheers
Thank you for the info. I just love it
A stunning garden, something for me try and aspire to.
Hi. I agree it is a great garden with a great atmosphere. I have a few great tropical gardens on my channel and this is up there with one of the best. Cheers
The interest in this garden is full of inspiration. So tranquil, lush & beautiful!
Hi. I totally agree. From the moment you walk into the garden it’s full of inspiration and has a great atmosphere about it. I’m glad you liked it. Cheers
Stunning! Stunning! Stunning!
Thank you.
Great video. I've got a lot of hardy tropicals. My oldest is a cordyline which has never been fleeced and stands as tall as my bedroom (it's to front / side corner of my house). Even the beast from the east didn't get it. Great tour. .
Hi and thank you. I don’t ever protect my green Cordylines as they are quite a bit hardier than some of the more colourful varieties. Below -5 I try to protect the Cordyline Torbay Dazzlers as a few years ago the new growth got badly damaged and it took a whole season to grow out. Cheers Cheers
@tikitropicals65 Yeah, I'm the same but did notice 3 dead in containers at a bike shop. Inam tempted by the more tender ones but we are clay based, so we don't want to risk it.
Great Vid as usual. Ever thought about getting a Butia? They seem quite hardy if kept dry during the winter.
Hi and thank you. I used to have a Butia many years ago and I lost it in a colder than usual winter and I decided not to replace it. I would really like to get a Jubaea this year though as I feel the garden does need a big feather palm. Cheers
Great vid, its all looking so lovely in January. I think the sock method could be better than my hairband method! Is the Torbay Dazzler half shade? It looks so comfy there !
Thank you. The Torbay Dazzlers is probably in my sunniest part of the garden and gets full sun for most of the day. Also gets plenty of winter sun too which helps through the colder months. Cheers.
@tikitropicals65 Nice that's good to know. Happy new year to you and the garden.
Cheers. You too.
Such a beautiful garden! 😀
Thank you. Needs a pond though 😂
@tikitropicals65😂 just let us know!
Glad to see your garden is bearing up in the frigid temperatures. You are so right about thinking about planting the right anchor plants that can take it. I’ve enjoyed your detailed review of your plants gave me a few ideas of plants to try in my garden. Here in 8b of Pensacola Fl we just had a week of chilly weather temps to -2 C but very windy giving us wind chills briefly to -8 C. Thankfully I have a nice garage to protect my really sensitive plants and dwarf banana bearing plants. Still looking forward to you spring remodeling of the garden
Thank you. I have a few more hardy evergreens to add in spring that I’m looking forward to planting that are different from what I already have so hopefully they will add a bit more interest. Cheers
I am struggling with the garden at the moment. My garden gets no sun in December to end of January, so its currently a freezer. I have a lot of trachycarpus planted, but they are small. Trying to create an overhead canopy is the key, but at the garden looks like its took a lot of damage 😕
Hi. Hopefully you’ve not had it too cold. These type of gardens can look quite bad in the winter months until the garden matures and you get that height. Sometimes building a structure like a pergola or gazebo if you have room and budget can give you instant height and interest plus a bit of extra protection from the cold and wet. The Trachycarpus you have planted will create a great hardy backbone in the future. They will also make the garden shadier in winter so finding plants like Fatsias and Aucubas that can cope with those conditions will help in the future. Cheers and thanks for commenting
@tikitropicals65 North facing garden unfortunately...a right pain in the winter. I am expecting losses so will be getting a few things over the next few months to reshape the garden in the spring. I am going to follow your example and get a few good hardy evergreens...just to give that all year interest. I think I may get a few bigger trachycarpus....just to get that look...I prefer planting them small as they seem to do better....just been outside and the small ones planted are absolutely frozen...so not sure if they will make it
Great tour, love the dedication with the sock 😅 so far -5 for us
Cheers Diane. -3.5 last night which is still a mild winter for my garden hopefully this is as cold as it gets this winter and we can start to think about spring soon.
@tikitropicals65 Oh, let's hope so. I can't cope with the anxiety of my tree ferns lol
It's cool that some people is really like tropical vibes. I live in this tropical country but I want snow 😅 is that making any sense?
Hi. I love the snow but just not in my garden and on my plants. For me I grow tropical plants in the cold wet U.K. because I want to feel like I’m somewhere more exotic and have that holiday feel. I can come home from work and sit in the garden and feel like I’m transported somewhere else. I think sometimes it’s human nature to want what we don’t have in our normal life. Cheers
looks like mr Blackbird is a good friend of yours, very friendly.
Yes. I have 3 different birds in the garden that follow me around hoping I will move some pots or disturb the soil. I’ve literally just brought some more bird feed to help them through this cold spell.
Mate, the SOCK and the COAT have made my day!!! Much respect from me 😁 That's how we roll. Another great video, and a treasure to see your garden in the frost. An evergreen garden is beautiful no matter the season and you've capitalised on that. Great to see your chamaedorea radicalis, mine was a casualty last winter, looks great next to the ferns and carex. Also good to see the benefit of creating your own microclimates. Really enjoyed this walkabout, thank you!
Hi. Yeah the sock was probably taking it a bit too far but it was cold dark and late at night so I did it in a panic. Sorry to hear you lost your Chamaedorea I remember seeing it and it was a good size. I’ve never had problems with mine so I’m surprised you lost it. Are you on clay? I think drainage is important with these and some overhead cover. I think I will definitely get a couple more in the future. Cheers
@ Bang on, lots of clay where that was planted. I did manage to mix it up with compost and manure but with hindsight, there was nowhere near enough drainage. I plan to replace that one, so an expensive lesson learnt! They’d look amazing as a cluster and you have lots of overhead that they could benefit from. Have a lovely week!
Looks absolutely beautiful 😍
Thank you.
still looking great! id love a chamadorea! we got to-6 for thepast couple nights and barely above 0 during the day in leicestershire. im with you on the hardy evergreen backdrop looks awesome all year
Thank you. I think the fact that when I started this garden my first winter of 2010 which was one of the coldest on record and it was frozen for nearly all of December made me realise if I wanted to carry on down the Tropical root I would need to have a good percentage of hardy plants that could cope with most winters. I love the hardy evergreen backbone and then the tenders in summer help complete the look. Cheers.
The main enemy of all these plants is winter humidity which, combined with the cold, becomes fatal to them! Most can easily tolerate dry cold!
Hi. I agree wet and humid weather in cold winters can be a real killer for plants. In the U.K. cold and wet in winter is almost a given so for me it’s about finding plants that can cope with that and using microclimates to make a more favourable climate than the surrounding conditions. Cheers
I'm really looking forward to seeing your final plans for the paths, reducing the grass to give yourself more planting will look great. Thanks for sharing your ideas
Cheers Diane. I’m looking forward to doing it.
Great comment and insights, as usual. Would really like to see videos on your insights to landscape architecture! 👍💯
Thank you. I have lots of plans for this season so I will try to film the process. Cheers
Great concept with the new paths think you will enjoy the additional tropical plants to enjoy. Someone mentioned you bring their favorite Channel, I watch a lot as well and very few other channels teach and entertain like yours. Wondered if you had a frost yet or freezing temps. Here in panhandle of Florida we will be getting out first cold weather next week with temp -2 to -4 C with even lower wind chills
Hi and thank you. Tropical style gardening is my biggest passion and I also love the design and landscaping side of it too. If people watching can learn or be inspired by any of the videos or tours I do that’s a bonus. My garden plans are getting bigger day by day at the minute. I’ve had a few days of -1.5 Celsius so far and lots of frosts next week. Nothing that will hurt my garden though. Cheers
@ hope your weather luck continues
Love your channel! Can you please label the plant name on the screen or mention in the description. Tysm!
Hi and thank you. It takes me quite a while to edit the videos when naming all the plants on screen so I don’t do it all the time. Sorry. I will try to do it more in the future. If you ever want to know any names you can comment what time you saw them on the screen and I can check and let you know. Cheers
