Hey C.F.,
Another great video for 911 enthusiasts. I total agree with not buying the cheapest car without service history. With that being said a ppi is a must for these cars. Once things are sorted they are truly reliable machines.
I've watched your videos on your 911 over the past few years and you've had a good experience with it. It was a good purchase as you mention, e.g. highway miles, maintenance records, etc. A well maintained 911 will be very reliable in my experience having owned three since 1980. Your videos helped me decide that I should once again get into a 911 of some sort. After a long hiatus from 911's, I recently bought my first water cooled model, a 991.1 with low mileage. The 911 continues to impress me every time I drive it!
very awesome! the 991 is a great car. i may have to pick one up in the future.
Thank you for another fantastic video...I loved the breakdown of expenses. Thank you for sharing your learning and expertise :)
Oil change alone typically cost $300-400 at the Porsche dealer.
Good to see a honest review and unlike the big tv show reviews this really shows what to expect over time and the 911 sounds to be a solid sports car that puts it ahead of the rest I am sold !!
Good advice. "Don't buy the cheapest one out there." Good video. Impressed with all the work you did yourself!
Thanks Mark! Hope you're subscribed to the channel!
Congratulations dude!
Love the details, hope I can afford one too one day :)
And the depreciation on the car to factor in with your mileage being a variable. Your maintenance and elective mods will keep the value high and car desirable. I’ve noticed here in UK most people do not keep 911 cars for long periods so many owners on the title.
makes me realize how much I've spent on my 996.2 over 4 years! its been fun but wowzers!
Same!
Great video, I'm in the beginning stages of purchasing a Porsche. Shooting for May of next year, the 4S seems to be the best aligned with what I'm looking for.
Do you need the all wheel drive? I love the wide body but steering feel takes a hit.
Makes me love my 2003 Acura RSX even more. 185K miles. Repairs so far? A $40 knock sensor. Japanese cars uber alles!
No timing belt replacement???
@@Mr.meaner2000 Was done at 115K miles.
Man thats why I don't track all my costs. Thanks for the breakdown though!
First af all, enjoyed your video. Feedback - I have a 2010 997.2 Targa4S which I haven't found the need to modify in any way. So, the windscreen was unfortunate and therefore not a typical cost plus you've made no attempt to offset the cost of insurance and road tax against that of a cheap standard car. I will ignore elective costs because they are yours and yours alone. I am on my third 911, I'm not rich but they are my passion but not now my daily driver althouth my first, a 911SC, was. I appreciate you're giving your view but I would argue, from at least 15 years experience of three generations, that ownership does not have to be as expensive as you suggest. Don't buy more than you can afford, trade up as circumstances allow if you want to, never buy a lemon, and look after it, the last is actually the most important point. You will always be rewarded with an amazing driving experience. I'm talking from experience, I loved my SC but I couldn't really afford it so I lost money because I couldn't look after it properly. I cherished my 993 and it doubled in value and allowed me to buy the 997. My views, Your views. totally personal - keep the 911 faith and enjoy the iteration you own. They are all amazing.
Thanks for the wise words! I will be holding onto my 997 for a long time. I have the car setup for my taste and everything just suites me. No car envy on my end...I have other hobbies to keep me busy 😁
If you still have the car as of Apr 2020, do an update video on the ownership breakdown.
Great video. Enjoy the ride.
Really enjoy your channel. I have an ' 06 Cabrio and also perform my own maintenance. Very similar#s to yours. I bought a Fabspeed exhaust and a Softronic tune. SS kit & spacers next year. H2O pump, window crank & coolant coll tank have gone.
Did the softronic tune help much?
They advertise 20bhp & I would say that's about right. Together with the Fabspeed exhaust & cold air, I figure I am about up to the 'S' spec
I would have like to see the finish product, wheel spacers, the rims refinished and hood protections. Show the readers the work done on your 911. I would like to do similar work on my Porsche 911.
Nice video. Where you get the key programmed? I need a new or spare key for my cayenne. You said you paid only $60. That’s awesome price.
What impress me the most is you did not have to spend any money on repair for 4 years?? That's insane! The windshield was just bad luck, Lord knows I've had to replace mine from a stupid rock. I'm so glad you did not sell this car, please keep it and continue to do a ton of videos on it.
Thanks. Will do when time permits!
I did spacers 15mm back and front from ECS tunning.Looks way better and got H&R lowering spacers
Do you have before and after pics of the wheel spacers?
GREAT video, thanks for the clear and usable information!!
Great video! I'm looking for a 997.2 911 Carrera S but man it's hard to find a manual.
Fan of your Porsche maintenance videos. Maybe we can meet, I am in Arizona too.
Thank you for this detailed cost information
I typically don't count insurance as a cost really, since it's a necessity and you have to have it. Kind of like putting gas in your car lol. Over all though, great vid. It was definitely not as expensive as I thought. Good to know lol
Nice summary. What was the purchase price versus the approx value now? How many miles have you covered in the 4 years?
I purchased the car for $52k. It's now worth about $40k. I put 13k miles on it so far. Just crossed 70k miles.
Great info. By any chance have you tried Geico for insurance? I’m around $700 a year for full coverage & a $250 deductible on my 997.2.
Actually, I switched to progressive and my insurance is around $600 per year. Pretty cheap!
Great video. How many miles do you have on it?
Thanks for the video. I just got 09 997 S and only have one key. Can you please share where to buy and how to program? Called dealer, they are charging 350 for part and 300 for programing😮
Great info. Where did you rent the lift you used? Thank You.
Wow, this thing costs a fortune to do basic maintenance DIY ...saved the day... Just think it would have been 10,000 plus at the dealer...
good information
Thank you!
How hard was the trans fluid job? Is a full height lift required? I need to do this. Nice vid, CF
You can do it with your lift. How high does yours go? It's an easy job. Just take off all the panels, remove the transmission drain bolt, then fill the transmission using the fill hole. You'll need a pump with a hose to get the fluid in. Once it begins to overflow, you've reached capacity.
Car Fanatic I think it gets close to 2ft in the air at Max height. I'll study up and get busy...Thanks
@@DWraysGarage hey I just watched his video and reading comments. I dont own a porsche but always liked them. if it will help you can get a electric pump that will suc out fluid
I bought one a drained the fluid out of my h d bike
k
Where did you get key program? I checked around and 2nd key + program are around $800
What about depreciation cost over 4 years also ?
So it's interesting, a 997 is cheaper than both an Audi or any BMW
Well done
Informative vid. Good job. One question: i just got a window crack on my 981S. You spent less than $500 on your windshield . . . was it the same OEM quality on that windshield or slightly thinner, etc?
It's not oem. It's a Fuyao windshield. Search my channel and you'll see the video I did on it. Just go with an oem windshield seal.
Here is the link ua-cam.com/video/aPuE9F-VC8w/v-deo.html
I’ve read that safelite’s glass supplier (at least for Porsches) is the same as the OEM manufacturer. Search around on rennlist. A winshield replacement should be under $500 from them.
Good breakdown, seems totally worth it to me. Any idea how much a diagnostic tool to aid in IDing error codes would run?
Most people recommend the Durametric, which is software and a cable that work with your labtop. I recently purchased it, and it was $287 plus tax.
@@wrxpilot I have a Foxwell NT530 and was recently really close to pulling the trigger on a Durametric. Trying to figure out a misfire I have after replacing injectors. Ultimately decided against it, I believe it wouldn’t offer anything I’m not currently getting with my Foxwell for my needs.
@@K1dPhresh1 Makes sense. I just noticed that was from four years ago, ha ha. Sorry, I thought it was more recent.
400 for registration??? Where the fuck is this! I pay 80 for reg and I have a custom plate. And insurance is the expensive thing here in sFL I pay 300 month so that’s like 3600yr
I would probably do the same thing if I had one, so I'll count elective LOL
What’s a “brake fluid cleaner kit”? Never heard of that
Have you worked out the deprecation, if any over 4 years. My UK MercedesE350 has lost nearly $8000 in just under 2 years!!!
Very minor, as there’s less Porsches than Merc
How much was the car and how much did you put down?
I have to reprogram my second key for some reason. The dealer is asking $400. How did you get this done for 90?
I called around. This was back in 2014, so a dollar went a lot further than it does now lol
4 yrs...$4k for me 997.1...do work myself
Did you need to purchase the second key? I believe they are $400+. Also, Porsche charges over $200 to program the key at dealership. How did you get it done for $90?
Fortunately, the dealer that sold me the car bought me an extra key after I complained. Porsche charged 1/2 hour of labor to program it. I just called a few places and negotiated with them.
Car Fanatic well done! Great mods too, you gave me some ideas for my 997 v.1
I drove a 2001 Twin Turbo for 13 years.
Beat that car like a rented mule.
Bought with 48K miles
Other than tires and shifter cable, the only other thing replaced was the anti freeze reservoir.
$16K?
Nowhere remotely near that..
And everyone broke my balls over the "omelet" headlights.
HAHAHA
Where did u change oil for 70 bucks ? Please let me know
I can’t understand why the insurance company did not pay for the window.
I don't have that coverage. It was an extra $200 per year to add. So I decided to take the risk and pay out of pocket in the event of a cracked windshield.
How many miles did you drive in those 4 years?
What transmission do you have, PDK or Manual?
Manual
$1400 a year for insurance??? Yikes dude. I'm about your age and drive in a more expensive state CA and mine is roughly $800 a year
I think that was before I switched insurance companies. It's only around $600 per year now.
Would you let me who performed the wheel alignment ? Local mechanic or a chain shop. TX
What kind of mileage did you put on over the last 4 years? And what is the cost per mile?
I put 13k miles. Don't know the cost per mile off the top of my head.
Just curious, who did your alignment for $150? I can't find an independent shop that has the tools to do this job.
I can't remember off the top of my head but it shouldn't really require special equipment.
Relocate to the Midwest and spend 99/yr on registration and 200/yr on insurance.
Wow is it really that cheap there?
I guess KY isn’t in the Midwest then. I pay well more than that.
Nice car!
hi CF thanks for all your videos i just got my (2012 997.2 carrera S) 5 moths ago but i only have 17,000 miles on it, the service light come on and i was wondering if i should do maintenance or not since it does not have the 20,000 miles yet? I know the previews owner did all the maintenance so the car is in great condition so i was thinking just to reset the service light just like you did so what do you think i should do? wish i know how to do all the work like you!!! but I do not know anything but change the oil!! im a fan of yours so hope you can give me an answer thanks.
It depends on when the last services were performed. The service indicator may not have been reset the last time it had work done. But keep in mind that service is time and mileage based. So even if you haven't hit the right miles, if it's been over a year since the last service, you should still get that work done. Hope this helps.
thanks for reply me back i really appreciated!! I talk to the previews owner and he did all the maintenance every year so.. but i will talk to the people that I buy it from to see if they did it, an honestly I just don't believe on time because let say I only put 3 to 4 thousand miles a year why I my changing the oil, i have a fiat abarth an when it comes to maintenance it requires about the same situation and i just don't go to the dealer every time like they want you to! because I don't have the mileage so i just wait until the miles hit because i take care my cars. I know Im not going to compare a porsche !! to a fiat but ok. wants again thanks for you advise and i will take it in to consideration, and hopefully I learn from your videos sincerely....RQ
Where did you reprogram the second key? My key needs to be programmed again on my 996 and my shop says I gotta go to the dealer and they charge about 250 bucks
Call around. My dealer only charged me half an hour of labor.
drop the ta ta ta and just use preventive the ta drives people crazy
New Windshield for $484?! No way! Not from Porsche. You must have gotten non-OEM glass.
Where do you buy all your parts from?
Autohausaz is a great website based on price
Good info and advice but I think you spent too much on electives.
You're probably right!
Let me know when you want to sell it!
You didn’t factor in depreciation.
Do you have to take a 911 to a dealership to preform maintenance?
Thanks. Hope it turns out well for you!
Car Fanatic What?
@@thestifmyster1 sorry, UA-cam had a glitch with comments. I do my own maintenance for the most part. Some things, I'd go to my independent mechanic for though.
Car Fanatic So if I didn’t do all of the maintenance myself, I wouldn’t necessarily have to take it to the dealership, I would just have to find a mechanic that could?
@@thestifmyster1 yup!
how many miles on your 911?
73k miles now!
Damn everything in the United States is so cheap. Great for car owners we would pay at least 60% more and that's taking exchange rate into consideration.
Where are you getting your supplies from ? Website ?
Bucks
Needed to throw in depreciation.
No you don't.
what's your 0-60 time?
hi. I really enjoy your Porsche videos. I would like to have some questions, is it possible I can have your email address so that I can send my questions to? Thanks
Sure. carandtruckfanatic@gmail.com
Like I'm in another budget meeting at work 😑
Soooo you,ll be skint now bud!!
"4 Year Cost of Ownership " forgot the TOTAL cost of GAS, that's a big one.
--owner of 2015 Tesla Model S P90DL, 0-60 2.6s, AWD, bought used 1/2 price ;D
Ouch!!! Best to buy Toyota. It is more reliable and durable.
comparing Porsche with Toyota..you made my day!
I had a 997.2. I hated it. Sold it and bought an e92 M3. Love it. M3 > 997.2. End of story.
