Costs that you would have with any car, like gas, insurance or tax, are not included. Things like insurance vary greatly from region to region but I have noticed the cost to insure my 911 was not far off what it costs to insure my 240sx.
Another key factor: you knew when it was time to sell. How many people would get enamored with the car (especially a 911) and keep it way past the break even point. You knew when "to get out"!
I agree on leaving out insurance and gas, since you need to pay it anyway. But tax is an extra expense. I change cheap depreciated cars a lot and tax is one of the things stopping me from doing it with higher priced stuff.

I've personally owned two 997's, the first was a Gen1 for 3 years, and the second is a 2010 Gen2 I've had for 4 years, and I literally have had nothing but oil changes and tires. For this kind of car, and the supreme performance/experience that I get, they have been crazy reliable. I am about to have to do a full $1,800 brake job on my '10, but it will be the first significant expense I've had with a 997, and its a "to be expected" brake job at 60K. I've had 4 Porsches in total and I find them, especially 997's, to be incredibly reliable for a "real" sports car.
@@valvodka well he could just be using it as a daily driver and not taking it on track, with some ocational sunday mountain road drives, and did not drive like an assh*le. With that kind of practice, the brakes will probably even last more than 5 year if you may. 😉
Honestly, is not cheap to maintain a car like this, but why would it be? It’s not a Corolla or a Civic. This car is special and the performance it delivers is worth it.
I bought my first generation 997 (with upgraded IMS and RMS replaced) back in 2018 for 31K cash. 68k miles. So far I have added 3900 miles no major issues or major expense other than registering the car Modern Key Fob replacement, insurance (997 takes about 70% of my insurance bill), gas and so on and I am in for a running total of 36.5k in just over two years. Currently at $186.56 per ride, $9.23 per mile. Not sure how some measure the cost of ownership but I track everything for this car on a spreadsheet and if I eventually sell it I guess my cost of ownership will be my running total minus my sell price. Not sure if I am tracking this information correctly but that is how I am doing it. I've seen a couple of youtubers leave out insurance/gas (AND TAXES!!!) in many cases so I could never get a true gauge of what it cost to own these cars. I plan to do a full suspension refresh soon as well as the starter motor/battery cable (hot start symptoms) so that will add a couple of thousand dollars to the above number. Anyway, New tires soon after and buying some Fuchs if I can find them.
Even with the addition of insurance and gas prices that is still a great price for 9 months of ownership for a Porsche. Thank you for the video, keep up the good work!
Hmmmm, makes me wonder that maybe all mechanics support the "all Porsches are expensive to own and maintain" so that when we go in and get a quote from them, they can inflate the cost and labor and expect us Porsche owners to automatically "expect" to pay that inflated amount. BTW, great video!
The state the person lives in makes a huge difference. Tax on a 2002 911 turbo is $1500.00 in GA. That blows your calculus out of the water. That being said I applaud your record keeping and working on your own car.
I like these a lot but I’m going cheaper and analogue-er and more DIYer. It’s going to be a 944 for me, all galvanized body with winter tires and we’ll see how it does on long highway trips.
911 was designed as a sports car from the ground up. E46 is a coupe turned into a sports car. Both have their risks with engines if they’ve done over 50k. Some folk get lucky, some don’t. Get a 997.1 (2004-08) bore scored checked ‘before’ you buy it. It’ll be the best 300 notes you’ve ever spent.

When two different mechanics who never met each other told me how much they hated working on it because parts had to be removed to get to the problem. ...I sold it.
I had a 911 Cabrio for 10 enjoyable years. It was 25 years old when I bought it and 35 years old when I sold it. I drove the car 30k miles mostly top down in Ca. It sold for 19k more than I paid and I spent about that refurbishing the car over the years. No regrets; great car and a good buy. Would I buy another? Absolutely, if it fit my lifestyle again. Really well engineered car.
I'm nearly 9 months into ownership of my 07 Cayman S. Cost so far including all fixes and maintenance and issues? $0000.00 No wait.....I did buy a phone holder and charge cable, oh and some blank CD's so I could fill the factory CD stacker with music I like. Car was fully detailed and serviced by the Porsche dealer before I took delivery. They also fixed the drooping headlining prior to delivery. They ALSO replaced the factory head unit FOR FREE after delivery (worth $2.5K). I think I did the smart thing in buying a Porsche Approved used car from an actual Porsche dealer :D As far as they were concerned, the car HAD to be perfect for it to be sold by them. No I don't work for them.

I bought an 08 Cayman S from a Porsche dealer 6 months ago. I had the same experience. The car had great records from previous owner, but the dealer made sure it was perfect before I took possession. Zero issues. The car always makes me smile every time I fire it up. Enjoy your Cayman S!!

Gearbox oil......Porsche gearbox oil is crapola. MOTUL 75W-90 shifts so much better, lasts 10 times longer, and wears better especially for any "track" application. After about 4-5 years, my 997, when cold, would "grind" just a touch from 4th to 5th. Once thru all the gears and warmed up, stopped. Changed to MOTUL, issue completely solved. Cold or hot, shifts are much better.
I've never owned a Porsche or a 911 - but I have seen enough videos about early-gen Cayennes & Caymans as well as certain 911 gens being every bit as problematic as some BMWs or Mercedes models are. In my experience, all German cars tend to be great early & pretty scary after 40K miles. This said, I've owned a total of 7 different BMWs & Mercedes cars.
I had the same problems on a 996 + an alternator which I got it rebuilt for $100 and a leaking coolant tank I got online for $120 and did myself. A clutch, ims, and seal was $4000 at the shop. Oil change is easier than a Toyota Camry.
I don’t know if everywhere in the US you have to pay that tax but as he said, he didn’t considered things that you would pay with every car: gas, tax, insurance, etc.

You should have added items like sales tax on the purchase, whether you have paid interest due to financing, insurance, etc. The sales tax is the main reason i dont change my car every 6 months, because that is money down the drain.

I'd be curious to know this as well, not to be pedantic about cost of ownership but more along the lines if that even exists for his transactions. I'm making a lot of assumptions here but I believe he buys/sells private party exclusively. Often times sales tax doesn't happen in these deals but I've never done a private party transaction north of $10k so I can't say how common that is outside of buying random beaters.
I've found that the biggest expense of owning late-model Porsches (besides depreciation) is TIRES. If you want to get good quality tires, they are quite expensive in Porsche sizes. Depreciation can be the biggest expense, but it varies on model and when you buy it in the depreciation curve - I bought a 2001 Boxster in 2006 and it cost me big in depreciation, because Boxsters and Caymans continue to depreciate quickly even after they are 5 years old. 997s seem to have hit the bottom about 3 years ago, and have been holding their value or even appreciating.
Not counting sales tax is a bit misleading. You can claim that every car you buy incurs sales tax but if you're constantly getting in and out of cars and writing off the tax bill, you're taking a loss of your own doing. I can get behind insurance and gas but a sales tax bill is not something you get hit with year over year if you keep the same car.

You don’t count the cost of capital, the insurance cost (or the cost of risk of it being stolen or crashed) so actually a car costing 30 thousand dollars didn’t cost you as little. And you were lucky to recuperate your costs and not having to fix something much more major
I drove a 1978 911sc for 6 months and spent exactly $30 on repairs other than an oil change with MANY quarts. Car cost $7800 + oil $30 and sold it for $9500 later. I don’t see targas that cheap anymore.
That's right. You can own any car for next to nothing when you only own it just long enough to almost need to change the oil. Let me know what your expenses were after 15 years of ownership.
Boy that's a great result and outcome. So glad you had such a good (financial) experience with your 911. The real key is that you knew how to do most all the service yourself. Yeah, people need to be VERY careful with all these youtubers saying how it's not too bad to own [insert luxury/sportscar here]. They usually own it for very short amount of time and/or work on it themselves and of course they produce content from the car as well. One always has to be prepared financially because used sportscars can be quite a headache to maintain/repair.
You only had the car for 9 months and 3K miles! Any conclusions you could come to about the ownership experience are based off of a very small time window of ownership. I'm really surprised the clutch and slave were that cheap; you obviously don't go to a dealer (smart man). Over the life of the vehicle should you choose to keep it you'd be subject to breakages far more often than say a Honda or Toyota. I think Porsche has really been taking advantage of their customers in this way. They sell over 30k Carreras every year, not to mention all those other models, so they're way past the point of being some tiny upstart that doesn't have the R&D funds to perfect their motors. The logic that it's a "high performance vehicle" doesn't cut it with me. If the Germans were such great engineers they'd build their motors to withstand current power levels and more. Toyota Supras from the 90s can routinely make over 600hp on the stock crank/valvetrain. Now look at the Carrera. Hmmm I wonder why the Carrera Turbo motors have a totally different setup than the non-Turbos? Anyone willing to double their stock power output and see if their motor lives? Didn't think so. Screw these new Porsches. I'll get an air-cooled model if I ever get one. Vent over.
He's selling because he found out about the bore scoring problem that affects all 3.8 Carrera S engines at higher mileages.... if you buy a 997, the 997.2's are the way to go.

You should buy a Nissan, or Toyota or Kia to avoid high service costs. Luxury sport cars are for people with deep pockets. When you buy a car, is not the cost to make the purchase, but the annual cost of services, insurance, fuel e.t.c. The next time think twice before you buy.
Certain variants of the 911 are always given the title of ‘an daily driver sports car’. Having seen this and other less complimentary reviews on some models of 911, I would stay away from one. Reliability is high on my list of priorities for a daily driver. If I could afford, I would go for a Lexus LC500. It might not be as exciting, but it aint gonna break and it’s reasonable practical.
Everyone is saying that taxes, insurance and the like should have been added. Issue is those are way too variable even from city to city let alone state to state. He could have great insurance vs someone that only has minimum. My biggest thing is you only drove it 3000 miles in 9 months, for me that is the waste. A beautiful driving machine that rarely sees the pavement. Doesn't matter what I own if it sits not being used for its purpose there is no reason to own it.
In Rhode island the tax would have been around $3k ( sales and excise tax) . but that is amazing for 9 months ownership. Buying on the way up and dumping before anything breaks can work if yoh lucky.
Wow, a whole 9 mo. Owned my '98 LS400 for 20 years, change the oil and filter myself (about $15) and have replaced 2 parts....less than $100. Rest just tires, batteries, wipers. Joy to drive and no oversteer. YEs, I know that's much less deadly than when I was your age, but I really love knowing that I'm very unlikely to be stranded. And I don't even have an IMS bearing.
Not that bad. I just put clutch in an elantra for $1700. If cost me $100 to replace the transfuid on my miata my cost. The 911 is a true track car they are easy to work on.
9 months and 3000 miles? $2200 with only 3000 miles, just think if you drove it like a normal car and doubled the mileage? Not to mention tracking the car... The 911 is easily a $5000+ a year maintenance car unless you don't drive it.
$2300 for 9 months and 3000 miles. What a steal. I drive 22000 miles in 12 months and it cost $200 miles in syn oil changes (at dealership bc it costs the same as my mechanic) on my commuting Prius. That Porsche is reliable.
Clutch replacement should be around £800. I’ve had my 2002 Boxster S since Sept ‘18 and it cost me a brake pedal light switch £12, reverse light switch £21 and a driveshaft inner bearing £75. It’s now April ‘20 and I’ve spent £108 I’ve also bought 4 tyres for around £350 in total so £458 in 18 months. Edit: I don’t see the factory spec sticker on your hood/frunk/bonnet so the car has had a replacement at some point, maybe it’s just not visible but it’s a sure sign of an accident repair at some point.
You forgot the sales tax you paid when you bought which would have been minimum $1500 if you bought from a private seller (well, at least that is in Illinois).
I own that car, same color, black rims. 996-997's all are famous for eating clutch's, when I was shopping, just about every single ad "NEW CLUTCH" regardless of miles. You do need a computer to reset reminder on dash when changing oil.

You'll regret it! I did, haha. Cost of upkeep was not bad over two years and 20k miles in my '05 C2S. IMS retrofit as preventative and starter replacement when it failed, replaced four aging tires and worn tie rod ends, 4 oil changes, 60k scheduled maintenance before the sale. The only thing I paid an expert to perform was the IMS retrofit, and that was around $2k along with the starter replacement.
I've owned an '05 C2S with about 100K miles for 5 years / about 7K miles & have had a similar experience. I have only had to do oil changes, front brakes pads/rotors, air/pollen filters & a gear oil change. All DIY & very inexpensive. The cars are cheap to own if you get a good one & do the work your self. Oh, and the insurance is cheaper than our other 2 cars ('17 S3 & '04 Phaeton) since it is rated for only 5k miles/year. So, if someone wants one as a 2nd (or 3rd) car & are able to DIY, I recommend it.

This missed the 928. the 911 is the poor man's 928. the 928 won "Car" of the year - no other sports car has ever won "Car" of the year. the 928 has two production car land speed records(1986 and 2020). the 928 is the biggest bang for the buck in exotic cars as well as the entire Porsche line up.

Many Porsche enthusiasts are usually not too impressed with owners turning wrenches on the cars. It can actually depreciate the value unless you have dealer service receipts, Not saying you didn't do the work properly but personally I wouldn't trust most owners to do anything unless they're certified.

I had a 2003 twin turbo and outside of replacing a piston in the rear wing and paying $395.oo for oil changes, the car was great. Oh, and before you have a stroke about the oil change, it always included a 150 point checkup of every system of the car, which is something your typical " shade tree mechanic can't do. I remember when I purchased the car, the mechanic saying that the only thing I would be paying for is tires and oil changes, and he was mostly right. And yeah, I think mine required 11 quarts of oil.
Did you not pay sales tax on the $30k purchase? That would be around $1,000 in most states. Sales tax kills the calculus on used car flips like this in most states.
One expense that you left off was your airline ticket to travel to N. Carolina to buy the car, but I’m nitpicking because that was more of an indirect expense, not related to the car ownership specifically.
1.You left out the insurance payment and gas. Yes that’s an expense. 2. Change gear oil clutch goes out. Happens all the time. Pressure changes among other things effect this and cause failure. Don’t argue with me I follow Scotty Kilmers channel! 😂

In the long run 911 is cheap to maintain . Cheaper than some BMW's !! Replacing clutch? Man . I have never done that. If you use car with manual gearbox properly ( basic mechanics ) it can last for a loooong time. 250k long
For those of you who don't know, on average you will pay much more per year to own it. You never had to pay for the expensive. The avg owner isn't as mechanical as you. I agree 100% agree with you about buying at the bottom of value. And only 3k in 9 months Wow. You really didn't drive it. You essentially bought a trophy. If you had put 10k on it or reached a milestone maintenance level on it, then it would be far worse.

I think the clutch price sounds pretty good. I paid about $1k for the parts on my 996. The dealer was quoting around $3k

I bought an 08 Cayman S from a Porsche dealer 6 months ago. I had the same experience. The car had great records from previous owner, but the dealer made sure it was perfect before I took possession. Zero issues. The car always makes me smile every time I fire it up. Enjoy your Cayman S!!

Gearbox oil......Porsche gearbox oil is crapola. MOTUL 75W-90 shifts so much better, lasts 10 times longer, and wears better especially for any "track" application. After about 4-5 years, my 997, when cold, would "grind" just a touch from 4th to 5th. Once thru all the gears and warmed up, stopped. Changed to MOTUL, issue completely solved. Cold or hot, shifts are much better.
I've never owned a Porsche or a 911 - but I have seen enough videos about early-gen Cayennes & Caymans as well as certain 911 gens being every bit as problematic as some BMWs or Mercedes models are. In my experience, all German cars tend to be great early & pretty scary after 40K miles. This said, I've owned a total of 7 different BMWs & Mercedes cars.

I had the same problems on a 996 + an alternator which I got it rebuilt for $100 and a leaking coolant tank I got online for $120 and did myself. A clutch, ims, and seal was $4000 at the shop. Oil change is easier than a Toyota Camry.

I don’t know if everywhere in the US you have to pay that tax but as he said, he didn’t considered things that you would pay with every car: gas, tax, insurance, etc.

You should have added items like sales tax on the purchase, whether you have paid interest due to financing, insurance, etc. The sales tax is the main reason i dont change my car every 6 months, because that is money down the drain.

I'd be curious to know this as well, not to be pedantic about cost of ownership but more along the lines if that even exists for his transactions. I'm making a lot of assumptions here but I believe he buys/sells private party exclusively. Often times sales tax doesn't happen in these deals but I've never done a private party transaction north of $10k so I can't say how common that is outside of buying random beaters.
It depends on state, but here we pay sales tax when you register the car, no matter where you bought it.
In most states, you only pay tax on the price difference - so if you are trading, then you'll pay less tax.
I've found that the biggest expense of owning late-model Porsches (besides depreciation) is TIRES. If you want to get good quality tires, they are quite expensive in Porsche sizes. Depreciation can be the biggest expense, but it varies on model and when you buy it in the depreciation curve - I bought a 2001 Boxster in 2006 and it cost me big in depreciation, because Boxsters and Caymans continue to depreciate quickly even after they are 5 years old. 997s seem to have hit the bottom about 3 years ago, and have been holding their value or even appreciating.

Realistically, you should add $1500 for the opportunity cost of the $30k you had into it, but still, great deal.
Not counting sales tax is a bit misleading. You can claim that every car you buy incurs sales tax but if you're constantly getting in and out of cars and writing off the tax bill, you're taking a loss of your own doing. I can get behind insurance and gas but a sales tax bill is not something you get hit with year over year if you keep the same car.

Probably around 70-80k. It depends on the part of the country you live at as well.

I drove a 1978 911sc for 6 months and spent exactly $30 on repairs other than an oil change with MANY quarts. Car cost $7800 + oil $30 and sold it for $9500 later. I don’t see targas that cheap anymore.

Yeah, people need to be VERY careful with all these youtubers saying how it's not too bad to own [insert luxury/sportscar here]. They usually own it for very short amount of time and/or work on it themselves and of course they produce content from the car as well. One always has to be prepared financially because used sportscars can be quite a headache to maintain/repair.

You only had the car for 9 months and 3K miles! Any conclusions you could come to about the ownership experience are based off of a very small time window of ownership. I'm really surprised the clutch and slave were that cheap; you obviously don't go to a dealer (smart man). Over the life of the vehicle should you choose to keep it you'd be subject to breakages far more often than say a Honda or Toyota. I think Porsche has really been taking advantage of their customers in this way. They sell over 30k Carreras every year, not to mention all those other models, so they're way past the point of being some tiny upstart that doesn't have the R&D funds to perfect their motors.
The logic that it's a "high performance vehicle" doesn't cut it with me. If the Germans were such great engineers they'd build their motors to withstand current power levels and more. Toyota Supras from the 90s can routinely make over 600hp on the stock crank/valvetrain. Now look at the Carrera. Hmmm I wonder why the Carrera Turbo motors have a totally different setup than the non-Turbos? Anyone willing to double their stock power output and see if their motor lives? Didn't think so.

You should buy a Nissan, or Toyota or Kia to avoid high service costs. Luxury sport cars are for people with deep pockets. When you buy a car, is not the cost to make the purchase, but the annual cost of services, insurance, fuel e.t.c. The next time think twice before you buy.
Certain variants of the 911 are always given the title of ‘an daily driver sports car’. Having seen this and other less complimentary reviews on some models of 911, I would stay away from one. Reliability is high on my list of priorities for a daily driver. If I could afford, I would go for a Lexus LC500. It might not be as exciting, but it aint gonna break and it’s reasonable practical.
Battery issues are why I only buy optima red tops. Best batteries I’ve ever used. Also yeah Porsches aren’t super crazy to work on

Everyone is saying that taxes, insurance and the like should have been added. Issue is those are way too variable even from city to city let alone state to state. He could have great insurance vs someone that only has minimum. My biggest thing is you only drove it 3000 miles in 9 months, for me that is the waste. A beautiful driving machine that rarely sees the pavement. Doesn't matter what I own if it sits not being used for its purpose there is no reason to own it.
In Rhode island the tax would have been around $3k ( sales and excise tax) . but that is amazing for 9 months ownership. Buying on the way up and dumping before anything breaks can work if yoh lucky.
Wow, a whole 9 mo. Owned my '98 LS400 for 20 years, change the oil and filter myself (about $15) and have replaced 2 parts....less than $100. Rest just tires, batteries, wipers. Joy to drive and no oversteer. YEs, I know that's much less deadly than when I was your age, but I really love knowing that I'm very unlikely to be stranded. And I don't even have an IMS bearing.

$2300 for 9 months and 3000 miles. What a steal. I drive 22000 miles in 12 months and it cost $200 miles in syn oil changes (at dealership bc it costs the same as my mechanic) on my commuting Prius. That Porsche is reliable.
Clutch replacement should be around £800. I’ve had my 2002 Boxster S since Sept ‘18 and it cost me a brake pedal light switch £12, reverse light switch £21 and a driveshaft inner bearing £75. It’s now April ‘20 and I’ve spent £108 I’ve also bought 4 tyres for around £350 in total so £458 in 18 months.
Edit: I don’t see the factory spec sticker on your hood/frunk/bonnet so the car has had a replacement at some point, maybe it’s just not visible but it’s a sure sign of an accident repair at some point.
You forgot the sales tax you paid when you bought which would have been minimum $1500 if you bought from a private seller (well, at least that is in Illinois).
I own that car, same color, black rims. 996-997's all are famous for eating clutch's, when I was shopping, just about every single ad "NEW CLUTCH" regardless of miles. You do need a computer to reset reminder on dash when changing oil.

You'll regret it! I did, haha. Cost of upkeep was not bad over two years and 20k miles in my '05 C2S. IMS retrofit as preventative and starter replacement when it failed, replaced four aging tires and worn tie rod ends, 4 oil changes, 60k scheduled maintenance before the sale. The only thing I paid an expert to perform was the IMS retrofit, and that was around $2k along with the starter replacement.
I've owned an '05 C2S with about 100K miles for 5 years / about 7K miles & have had a similar experience. I have only had to do oil changes, front brakes pads/rotors, air/pollen filters & a gear oil change. All DIY & very inexpensive. The cars are cheap to own if you get a good one & do the work your self. Oh, and the insurance is cheaper than our other 2 cars ('17 S3 & '04 Phaeton) since it is rated for only 5k miles/year. So, if someone wants one as a 2nd (or 3rd) car & are able to DIY, I recommend it.

This missed the 928. the 911 is the poor man's 928. the 928 won "Car" of the year - no other sports car has ever won "Car" of the year. the 928 has two production car land speed records(1986 and 2020). the 928 is the biggest bang for the buck in exotic cars as well as the entire Porsche line up.
That’s why every 911 have many previous owners. People swap the car frequently cause a complex and missing maintenance records on carfax history... when I want to buy a used one just feel like gamble

Many Porsche enthusiasts are usually not too impressed with owners turning wrenches on the cars. It can actually depreciate the value unless you have dealer service receipts, Not saying you didn't do the work properly but personally I wouldn't trust most owners to do anything unless they're certified.

I had a 2003 twin turbo and outside of replacing a piston in the rear wing and paying $395.oo for oil changes, the car was great. Oh, and before you have a stroke about the oil change, it always included a 150 point checkup of every system of the car, which is something your typical " shade tree mechanic can't do.
I remember when I purchased the car, the mechanic saying that the only thing I would be paying for is tires and oil changes, and he was mostly right. And yeah, I think mine required 11 quarts of oil.

1.You left out the insurance payment and gas. Yes that’s an expense.
2. Change gear oil clutch goes out. Happens all the time. Pressure changes among other things effect this and cause failure. Don’t argue with me I follow Scotty Kilmers channel! 😂
