      You can shoot 500 S&W Special and 500 JRH aka 500 S&W Short magnum in the 500 S&W magnum to gauge the gun to game like deer and up to and including elephant as handgun hunter Mark Hampton did in Africa with one shot. Using Corbon 440 grain hard-cast gas check bullet of course.

      +jim bob Have you seen the .500 Magnum cartridge and revolver up-close? Nothing about it says "inadequate" or "underpowered". This caliber is more powerful than the .45-70 Government that hunters used to wipe out the buffalo back in the 19th Century.

      Not disputing the power, in my part of the world if you said you were going to hunt deer (no bears here) with a hand gun you would be laughed out of the county. I'm not talking about power but about accuracy as I don't see the point in using a hand gun when a more suitable weapon is available.

    • @ReonMagnum
      @ReonMagnum 8 років тому +10

      ***** Unfortunately, this is the stigma that many handgun hunters face: rifle & shotgun hunters ridiculing high power handguns, when other much less powerful hunting weapons like bows/crossbows and blackpowder muzzle loaders are not usually laughed at.
      Anyway there are advantages to carrying a handgun for hunting: A heavy long barreled revolver and shooting stick is still lighter and handier than a 10 pound rifle in tight brush and dense forests. In-case of emergencies like sudden predator attacks, the handgun is also faster to bring to bear than the long gun.

      By the same token does a sniper use a hand gun, bow or crossbow ? No, why not ?

    They did this bear a favor. It was old, obviously getting the down end in scuffles with up and coming dominant bears, and it's teeth were so it was in pain and would have a hard time eating tougher prey other than fish, and maybe then too... It was an "old dog" for sure. A perfect hunting specimen. That S&W 500 put it down immediately and the shot placement was such it didn't suffer at all with the noted spinal cord hit. That's a proper professional guided hunt and a example of how it should be done!

  • @applepiebetty
    @applepiebetty 11 років тому +13

    This bear had lived a long life, It was old & now loosing to the younger bears. They don't kill fast & clean. This bear went out without even knowing what hit him. With his teeth in such a mess, he would have slowly starving to death.
    I would rather see these older bears go like this then by the torcher's of nature. Coinsidently it's a "humane way" to end his life & yet feed the need for man to hunt as it was ingrained in them since the beginning of time. Man is a part of nature too.

    Enough about the animal rights whining. The hunters wanted to prove that the .500 S&W Magnum can take down a brown bear in one shot, and it did the job cleanly. They paid money for a legal hunt, and took only one animal; an old bear that was injured and destined to die an agonizing death if not hunted down. They could have also shot the second bear that came around and justify it as self-defense, but they didn't and that shows their self-restraint.

    Hello, Razor Dobbs killed a cape buffalo with the 10mm auto with just 2 shots fired. Actually he was dead with the first shot the second was just good measure. And the 44mag has and still kills almost everything on the planet so I wouldn't say that the 460 and 500 are the only handguns suitable for such game hunting.

      We actually make some pretty tasty brown and Grizzly burgers, but most people don't have the equipment to quickly move the bear after shooting so the meat goes tangy. If you spice it thoroughly with cayenne and whiskey, the nasty wild flavor actually can add to the depth of flavor. I especially like sauteed portbella mushrooms with some spiced bear. A good cigar and bourbon definitely add to the experience as well. I'd recommend a Romeo & Julieta, but I haven't had a drink in years so no word on that whiskey.

    To all those ragging on hunters:

    • @paulhomsy2751
      @paulhomsy2751 8 років тому +1

      +Vicki Vicious ,Vicky, actually they did not. The meat isn't obligatory to take in Alaska, they took the hide and the skull. Not the meat. In Montana it's the same. In California, the meat has to be taken out. It depends in what state you hunt.

    • @vee9561
      @vee9561 8 років тому

      My mistake, in Alaska it's basically all big game excluding brown bears. "You must salvage all the edible meat of moose, caribou, sheep, mountain goat, wild reindeer, deer, elk, bison, musk-oxen, and spring black bear, for which seasons and bag limits exist."

    • @TORREX-A.D.

      how did they get the meat out

    • @paulhomsy2751
      @paulhomsy2751 8 років тому +1

      +Vicki Vicious, yes, the meat has to be taken out for all animals except Brown Bears. Black bear meat has to be taken out as well in most states, not all. As for moose, elk, deer, caribou, muskox, the meat has to be taken out before the trophy. If one comes back to a bear disputing the antlers one isn't supposed to shoot. It's illegal to, it's also illegal to take the meat out after the antlers, the meat must come first. Fines and penalties are very substantial if one doesn't follow these rules.

    Yep, the 45-70 is a good choice for large animals. They are a lot less expensive than that SW 500 (or can be) and it provides better range. Ammo selection for that caliber is immense. One thing for sure, what you shoot with it will be dead, provided you have good shot placement. I don't hunt bears, I have no use for one. But there certainly are a lot of black bears in our state. The population is the largest its ever been.

    People eat bear in Alaska, seems that some people don’t understand that here. It’s one of native Alaskans most important food recourses because of their fat content along with seal meat/fat. People also don’t understand that in deep Alaska there is no grocery store or restaurants also that you can just drive down the street to go buy groceries or grab lunch/dinner. You’re responsible for gathering your food there wether it be growing your own food or hunting animals for food...It’s just their way of life so people should respect that.

    Somebody below said that a handgun was not intended for killing game animals. Many years ago that was accepted dogma but as anybody with a solid knowledge of firearms today will tell you, handgun hunting is very effective and the necessity for a long gun has faded considerably. When you consider that EVERY dangerous game on the planet has been taken with a handgun you've got to admit that is a very credible hunting method.

Oh but we already get meat from the supermarket you don't need to hunt, except the chicken and beef from the supermarkets come from factory farms that have terrible living conditions. its not a fascination, its in our nature, obviously not as necessary as it once was, but denying that you are either lying to yourself or aren't human.

    Balls. Big huge brass balls. I can't imagine ever feeling the need to go after the most dangerous North American predator with a pistol. If ever I go bear hunting I think I'll bring a 50 BMG and be 30 feet in the air when I take the shot.

    I'm figure that they're trying to prove their .50 cal handgun is adequate protection against bear, since it's generally thought that no handgun is sufficient to stop a bear (at least in the handguns generally sold for protection like a 9mm, 45 auto, or .44 magnum). Most people in Alaska wouldn't think of anything less than a .375 rifle to reliably stop one of these beasts.

    • @ReonMagnum
      @ReonMagnum 8 років тому

      +sam52054 Handgun calibers above .44 Magnum are more than adequate for bear protection AND hunting. .454 Casull has proven itself as a real stopper against grizzly bears and other large animals like buffalo. As seen in this video and other hunts, the more powerful .500 Magnum will drop huge critters dead in their tracks. .460 Magnum is a long range handgun caliber, and can reliably kill big game at 100 yards or more.
      I really dont get the stigma hunting handguns have and are often seen as "inferior" or "inadequate", when much less powerful weapons like compound bows and blackpowder guns have been used to take big game.

    • @sam52054
      @sam52054 8 років тому

      It's one thing if you're hunting it, quite another if it's charging at you. You won't get to place your shot as accurately (plus it's moving). What might be more than adequate suddenly becomes not enough when your life is on the line.

    • @ReonMagnum
      @ReonMagnum 8 років тому

      sam52054 Real world animal attacks have proven heavy handgun calibers as adequate dangerous game defense. In 2009, Alaskan resident Greg Brush was suddenly charged by a hungry grizzly bear. He had just enough time to draw his Super Redhawk Alaskan .454 Casull and let the bear have it at close range. The first shot dropped the grizzly right there, but Greg emptied his Ruger on the dying animal anyway.

      +ReonMagnum in addition that bear weight 900 pounds and the 454 did the job without aiming or shot placement. Now that the Bear got taken with the 500 with one shot. I wonder how many shot will it take for an elephant with a 500 gr?

    • @ReonMagnum

      Manuel Silva With hardcast flatnose bullets, it can take only 1 or 2 shots to put down a elephant, provided the hunter aims for the brain.

  • @NewtonWashinton

    One reason i like the 460 SW, you have a choice of 3 calibers, the 454 Casull and the .45 long colt will all shoot in this gun. I also don't hunt but i do enjoy punching holes in various targets. I would enjoy being in Alaska taking photos and of course would have a 45/70 for protection but that would be a last resort, noise first, then a shot in the air, then pepper spray, hopefully would never have to shoot a Beautiful Bear

    Well, if I ever need to go into bear territory, I'll probably carry one of these behemoths. I'd heard they designed the gun with the intention of taking down anything in North America with one shot, so I was wondering if that meant it'd work on bears. Apparently so!
    Also: ugh, it's just a bear, you hippies, it's not like he's burning down an orphanage while nuns are reading the kids bedtime stories.

Or maybe I just don't have a mental disorder that causes me to associate human feelings with nonhuman animals. It's one of the two with you.

      Well you better practice a lot. Or better yet take a rifle. No offence, it's just that carrying a big hand cannon it's a lot harder to hit what you aim at. This guy has probably shot thousands of rounds with it first. But if you're proficient with it, it will definitely do the trick.
