- SNAKES ‘N’ ADDERS INTRODUCING SERIES
EPISODE: 31
NUEVO LEON KING SNAKE (Lampropeltis leonis)
Video Notes:
other common names include: THAYER’S KING SNAKE AND VARIABLE KING SNAKE
(they make up part of what was termed the mexicana complex referring to a previous taxonomic review) - also making up part of the tri-colour king snakes with the mountain Kingsnakes of Arizona, Chihuahua and Huachuca.
many textS will still list them as a previous taxonomic name LAMPROPELTIS MEXICANA THAYERII (which in total honesty is how I still refer to them)
Taxonomic history is confusing and has been a bone of contention amongst authors or scientific papers over the years with some only listing 2 and other listing up to 6 species in this group.
A paper by Hansen & Salmon in 2017recognises 6 species:
lampropeltis alterna (grey banded) - Brown 1902
lampropeltis greeri (Durango) - webb 1961 (Aguascalientes, Jalisco and Nayarit)
lampropeltis leonis (N.Leon) - Gunther 1893 (Coahuila, Tamaulipas)
lampropeltis mexicana (SL Potosi) - Garmann 1884 (Aguascalientes, Guanajuato and hidalgo)
lampropeltis ruthveni (Queretaro) - Blanchard 1920 (Hidalgo & Jalsico)
lampropeltis webbi - Bryson, Dixon & Lazcano 2005 (Durango & Sinaloa) - only 5 specimens known.
The taxonomic history of the Nuevo Leon King Snake is as follows:
first decribed by GUNTHER in 1893 as Coronella leonis: Subsequent changes were -
lampropeltis leonis (Blanchard) 1920
lampropeltis thayeri (loveridge) 1924
lampropeltis mexicana thayeri (gehlbach & baker 1962)
lampropeltis mexicana (garstka 1982)
lampropeltis mexicana thayerii (liner & casas-andreu ) 2008 remarked as unnecessary amendment
ICUN RED LIST JUST LISTS mexicana which includes greeri and leonis although webbi has its own listing as does Ruthveni.
So the confusion continues.
LAMPROPELTIS LEONIS is associated with Sierra madre oriental range on the Eastern side of Central Mexico.
Conversely the species it is most closely associated with is the Durango King Snake which is associated with the Sierra Madre Occidental on the Western side of Mexico….
The two separated by 3-400km of Chihuahuan desert?
So Leonis on the oriental or Eastern Sierra madre occurs in desert side scrubland and climbs through thorn scrub and pine/oak woodland on rocky slopes.
Elevations from 1000-2250m. This is potentially a harsh environment full of extremes.

Great video. You always hit it out of the park with your breakdowns. And an absolute beautiful specimen. I’m drooling. Lol
Thank you so much for your video! I was at a reptile expo yesterday and saw a snake just like what you’re holding. The color blew my mind. I had to buy it. What a wonderful snake! I am falling in love with the species. Your video was so informative on their history and care. I think I am going to have to add them to my breeding list now.
Big thumbs up for understanding the "market" on these guys 20-25 years ago. They were rock stars in the U.S. for a time.
they sure were. I remember the magazine ads with mad bright tricolor king and milks on coloured gravel. TNT snake used to do it if i remember correctly.
Always look forward to your videos keep up the great work and can't wait for your book.
i havent touched it for weeks The shop has blown up - seemingly because of this channel. So im just gonna have to try and do it bit by bit. pretty much 200-210 pages complete be arounbd 250 i reckon. nearly there. Then its manuscript time when it gets tore to shreds hahaha
I saw the video title and the thumbnail and thought ‘Huh? But that looks exactly like my Variable?’ -1 for me getting confused by names lol
Lovely snake in the video, spitting image of my Arrow!
interchange at will: Thayer's King Snake / Variable King Snake / Nuevo Leon King Snake
I have my baby variable kingsnake, and she looks identical to that one, belly spots, color, except for the size, 🐍💚 she is almost 4 months old and is a tiny noodle, but it was nice to see a bigger version, gives me an idea of what she will look like 🐍🩷
Thank you for the info, I'll be looking more into your channel
Thank you again
Great video 💯 what I was looking for 🩷🐍🩷
Wow you have really blown up with subscribers since i first started following you!
That there is a beautiful snake i am totally going to look more into those!
thanks matey, hope your channel is still doing well. xx
Beautiful snake! Like cracked earth with lava coming through! Thanks for this introduction SnA, im so glad to be expanding my knowledge and learning of more potential "first snakes" as im still trying to find the pefect one. Im a guy who likes options and loves to do my research up front, so it awesome to have a channel like yours going far beyond just corn snakes and ball pythons! Cheers!
like music to my ears - the sole premise of this channel's inception.

Omg the snake on your website actually brought me here. Lovely looking snake.
Ah damnit. And I’ve just got round to labelling our variable as a Mexicana Thayeri 🤣🤣🤣
Totally agree though, absolutely stunning snakes and a pleasure to keep 👌🏻
frigging taxonomists!!! - should all go and play in traffic. It gives the knobheads whipping sticks to beat others with online. Name nazis. Fuck em
Just started looking at these and found this info really helpful, thanks. Agree they’re absolutely stunning. I hadn’t really been interested in kings till I discovered this species. May well like to pick up one (or more!) from you in future
Great video,Thank You much.
What a beautiful snake! It's nice to see how relaxed and active it is.
words cannot accurately describe how much i love this group of snakes. Thery kick ass.
Beautiful snake!
preach!!!
Jalisco sounds a bit more like Haw-Lee-Scoe (scope sans the p)
Just got my first snake being one of these little guys:)
Brilliant stuff as always! I want to get into breeding for the first time within the next year, and I’m really looking at this species as a good candidate.
I have a friend that’s really good at graphic design, and I was wondering if you’d be interested in his work for your channel art and thumbnails. He hasn’t made the stuff on my channel, but if I was short on time I’d go with him myself! Let me know if you want his contact!
superb choice and demand is growing now boas and pythons are over produced.
