If you've ever tried desoldering this kind of connectors, the wick and sucker will not really work, there is always residual solder that keeps it in place
In the end you spend so much time on it that the plastic frame will melt
So yes this method seems to be way better

@@LeAdri1du40I have tried desoldering these kind of connectors and you mentioned something crucial. That the plastic will melt on the connectors. Let me teach you about thermal mass. The more thermal mass something has the more heat you have to apply. This is a very basic description but essentially in this video the guy adds a thick copper wire to distribute the heat better. The side effect is that he has given the solder joints more thermal mass meaning he has to use more heat for a longer time which would cause more damage to the connectors. If you are trying to remove the connectors without damaging them a wick or even better a solder sucker will remove the solder super quick if used correctly and will let you remove the connectors without damaging them.
Hi , sorry I have to disagree with the last comment . You will NOT cause more damage to the plastic part of the connector and is a lot safer for the board . Tried all methods going , this is my safer preferred method. If you like your method stick to it . As you should know wick and solder suckers will often lead to a small amount of solder contact down the barrels ( sometimes very difficult to avoid ) when the connector is then pulled out part of the barrel comes with it , not good if you have a multilayer board . Seen this hundreds of times over the years . My method avoids this risk . totally. Thank you , but I had to reply to that not quite correct comment.
For everyone who ever tried to desolder these types of connectors or any connector with many TH pins must appreciate and will have their mind blown. :D
JUST be careful to not overheat the PCB, but with this, it might be actually harder than normally.

Or just use a solder sucking pump and not have to worry about any of that.
this is quicker and uses less total heat

You can easily remove plastic bracket and remove connector pin by pin.....
Hi , you can't do that with every connector and this is way quicker . I used to do it the way you mentioned , never again though .
Agree with that - not allways the best way [especially with poor access to connector top surface) but when possible, why not :) i mostly heat connector to 150C deg and remove it like butter. Cheers 🍻

OMG this is genius. I suffered so much taking off headers. I often resort to blowers, resulting in totally crisping the board and damaging ICs everywhere.

Just slide off the plastic spacer/retainer and desolder one pin at a time.

Even connectors like this in the video , not always possible to slide the plastic off . I've seen many ways to remove over the years , this is at times the best .
Too much hassle to reuse after disassembly.
I usually plug in a connector to keep the pins aligned even if I melt the plastic a bit, but I'll try this method next time

My sucker have problem when I need to deal many pins at same time, I can remove one each time, and I mean remove from the plastic support. So I better use the heat gun then use the sucker and hot air to clean the holes.

To grip these headers i usually use a random female header lying about. Easier to hold on to even with fingers which also are protected from the warmed-up pins

Is this the way to remove SIP8 opamps? They look harder to get out than DIP8 because there's no clearance to even clip them. Maybe I will try this approach.

I tried soldering once but failed cause i didn't knew about flux. In your videos you make it look very easy
Hi , thank you for watching the video and commenting, very kind of you . As I mention in all of my videos, flux is essential when soldering . Solder wire has a small core of flux running through the centre of it but this burns off to quickly when iron heats applied . This is why external flux added to your joints is crucial to achieve good soldering results . Thanks again , take care 👍

Can i spread flux on all pins and just use the solder wick? Will it work?

The trouble with solder wicking out the holes with the pins in is that when the pins are pushed right against part of the barrel , it's nigh impossible to get the solder out at them points . When you pull the connector out you can easily take part of the barrel with it . Better to drop the connector out first then easily wick out the pin free holes . Thanks again , take care 👍

I used solder wicks and this trick when i run out of them
ok, it's a valid workaround, but a solder wick would be ideal, it doesn't heat the board as much, it doesn't need more tin and it's safer and faster
Hi , the trouble with solder braid ( wick ) is that it can leave a small amount of solder between the part where the pin is touching the side of the barrel which can be impossible to remove
When you then remove your component you take this part of the barrel with you , on a multilayer board this can be extremely bad news . So dropping the component out first then wicking out the holes is safer , not the other way round .

get soldering iron with screw head type, replace the tip with long chopper 1mm wire... there you go

You can also remove that black part and then resold single pins.

It seems to work well, but I think a heat gun for soldering makes quick work without needing to use extra materials, but if you're without such tools this is a decent approach.
Hi , thank you for your comment. I have hot air stations etc but there are times when this method is so much better than using hot air . This is so much better than hot air for the surrounding components and for pumping unwanted hot air into your board potentially delaminating it. Also plastic bodied components i.e connectors , headers etc that will melt using hot air can be safely removed using this method so if necessary can be reused . Hope that helps explain this great method . Thanks 👍

Hi , I do use one at times after I've dropped out connectors . This method is much better . Still prefer braid to manual pumps . Expensive electronic pumps are really good , cheaper ones are garbage . Thanks .
At this point I would just cut the pins with flush cutter and remove each pin individually. But that's a nice tip too now all i need is a solid copper wire laying around me.

Soldering metal is much expensive than desoldering wire, so this method is not economical.

Why not using suction 1 by 1
Hi , this is safer . If you have a pin hard pressed against the side of the barrel it's very hard removing all the solder from that point . You end up potentially taking some of the barrel with the pin when pulling the connector out . Best to drop the connector out then desolder . Also braid is better than hand held suction pumps which I find pretty terrible. Electronic ones are good but are expensive for hobbyists etc.
