    Shortcuts for the BlenderGIS addon:
    - ‘B’ to select area to zoom to
    - ‘G’ to search a location
    - ‘spacebar’ to switch layer
    - ‘L’ to lock the view, while still enabling zooming to receive higher resolution tiles
    - ‘CTRL’ and scroll to zoom without loading new tiles
    - ‘E’ to export the current view to a new plane in Blender

    Hello. Thanks for this video, it explains very well the process. I have one issue though. I am comparing measurements in Google Earth and the Blender GIS output and getting different numbers. I measure a surface in GE and it is 509.21 meters, in Blender it is 724.009meters. Would you know what is causing this difference? My Blender is set to Metric.

      Hi, you're correct. Its a known issue: github.com/domlysz/BlenderGIS/issues/81. But this is not a bug of the Blender GIS addon, but inherent to using the web mercator projection, which is a global map projection with significant distortions on a local level. Google maps/earth is automatically applying a correction to the measurement after projection. BlenderGIS is not.
      If you want accurate measurements, you'll need to use coordinate systems and projections that are optimised for a certain region of the earth. National grids are often used by individual countries, which you can use. However, since the addon does not 'reproject' maps that are in one coordinate system to another on the fly, and the imported google earth data is always in this inaccurate projection, you'll need to prepare your map in external software like QGIS. Or, and that's another option, install the GDAL extension to get this reprojection functionality. This is a bit of a technical procedure, but not too hard. It is explained here: github.com/domlysz/BlenderGIS/wiki/How-to-install-GDAL

    With the L lock, and rolling the mouse wheel, I found it will export stubborn larger land masses, it just requires multiple presses of the E key. Likely one would benefit with more ram going for a 1 to 1 scale zoomed out too far. Curious what the largest texture you created from your exports. Thanks

      The SRTM satellite data that is imported has a maximum resolution of 30 or 90 meters. If you need more detail, you will have to find another elevation map of your area. Some regions in the world have been lidar scanned and this data may be freely available. If not you can get a drone with decent camera and capture the data yourself ;)

      I guess you're in the wrong shading mode in Blender. Check the little spheres on the top right of the 3D viewport. You may be in solid shading (= grey by default). Switch to 'material preview'. Or, still in solid shading, click on small downwards arrow next to the last sphere, and look for 'texture'. Select this.

    • @igorzkoppt
      @igorzkoppt 2 роки тому

      I had the very same problem. If you still haven't resolved it and gave up 1 year ago, I found out why: Camera clipping distance. The camera view is not scaled for such large scale objects by default, and you need to adjust it to 500m, 1000m, 2000m etc. depending on your needs. It's the "Clip start/end" in "Lens" in the camera settings.
      Took me way too long to figure it out.. They should mention that in tutorials that are not camera-specific since by default, you get a blank image otherwise.

    How can you export the SRTM map as a hight map? :)

    • @4dresearchlab97
      @4dresearchlab97  3 роки тому

      You can find the location of the srtm map on your harddrive in the texture properties tab in blender (with the srtm object selected). Open this map in QGIS, and right click > export. Save it as geotiff and select 'rendered image'. This transforms the 32 bit floating point srtm tiff to an 8 bit tiff file. You can use that output as a regular height map.

      @@messo_9732 Well, I doubt it. For basic functionality you do not need GDAL. GDAL is a library only needed when you want to reproject your data on the fly. So, when your data is in one georeference system, while your blender scene is in another. If you happen to have set your scene georeferencing to a system that doesnt match the one of the SRTM, then you could get an error like that.

      Hi, this is new to me as well. Perhaps you tried this already, but this worked for me: 1. go to opentopography.org, create an account and request an API key. 2. In Blender > add-on preferences > elevation server (select opentopo 30 or 90) > edit > replace portal.opentopography.org/API/globaldem?demtype=SRTMGL1&west={W}&east={E}&south={S}&north={N}&outputFormat=GTiff with portal.opentopography.org/API/globaldem?demtype=SRTMGL1&west={W}&east={E}&south={S}&north={N}&outputFormat=GTiff&API_Key=123YourAPIKeyHere123
      Repeat the steps for the other opentopo elevation server (so the 30 or 90 one, depening on which you modified first).
