- We put American Mac and Cheese and Canadian Kraft Dinner to a taste test to find out which one is better. It wasn't easy because Jason lives in the US and I live in Canada and the border is closed! So we had to mail each other our mac and cheese packs, and it seems that his got held up at the border!

What..the hell..happened....to the PACKAGE!? Also, fork or spoon? Ketchup or no? American or Canadian version??
Bored postal-workers use some parcels in their garage-bands and distribution-centre sports teams. That parcel was probably used for illicit floor-hockey games.
Spoon definitely and no ketchup. Also did you hear that they are making a pumpkin spice KD version? Not sure about that flavour though.
@@teresarydberg1450 Ugh...that sounds terrible! I love me a PS latte, but I want my mac 'n' cheese savoury...
No ketchup...salsa
@@teresarydberg1450 YEs i did! We talked about it but cut it out for time! Lot's of extra stuff from this episode might put it on patreon!
Kraft dinner has been flavourless for years. They definitely changed the formula since I was a kid.
PC mac and cheese is great though.
I keep meaning to try the PC version. Thanks for the reminder. ;)
Definitely. It doesn't taste how it used to.
Another PC lover, you are not alone. Can't count how many of us prefer the PC brand. Best KD knock off ever, bar none, yes.
@@Ripplin The PC one is good. Whatever you do though, do not ever try the Italpasta one, it's horrid. About the only one next to KD and PC that's any good is Walmart's Great Value one, it's alright. PC is the winner though, lots of comments mentioned that one.
@@MrBilld75 I actually did have the deluxe cheddar and white cheddar varieties of PC in the past few days. Both good, but preferred white cheddar. Seemed saltier to me, which was good in this case. (and I actually do like the Italpasta, but I never eat any mac & cheese as-is anyway; I usually add sour cream & onion popcorn powder if possible, which is a huge flavor enhancer)
I realized that Canadian politeness is a thing when Joseph threw in the extra goodies when he sent the KD...even his daughter sent a sweet note...I loved that!
Canadian here... In all fairness, I only like KD about 50% of the time. I prepare it the same way every time, but it doesn't always taste good. Sometimes the noodles cook too fast (macaroni soup anyone?), sometimes the cheese tastes funky... Maybe it's a shelf-life thing, or maybe it's a quality control thing, I don't know.
Yes, I've had a similar experience and just thought it was me, but that never made sense 🤔
I bet you've never made it the same way twice. Also pro tip salt your water.
try watching the noodles. and taking it off the burner when its done... usually it doesnt get overcooked this way.
To make it edible; combine milk and butter in pot on very low heat, gently stir in "cheese" & blend well shut off heat & stir in pasta
People think it makes a difference how you melt the butter 😂
@@Tinkering902 emulsification and blending of ingredients is actually important when making a cheese sauce.
the only thing makes this shit edible is to shred real cheddar into it and add black pepper.
I literally love this friendship so much omg 💞💞 goals
Me too, they are the Best IMO!
KD with cut up hotdogs in it was like kid crack in the 80's. I still do it.... ill never quit.
Schneider's Red Hots wieners?

it still is...my son loves it. One of the first things he made in the kitchen.

Same here with salsa added
I have to say I do believe I am the fan who suggested this video. I am American and a professional Chef and I import KD from Canada. I have to say Joseph don't feel too bad because I made both USA and Canadian Kraft Macaroni and cheese for the whole staff of the restaurant-who are all American and Southern. they all tied both I asked them which one they preferred. It was an ABSOLUTE Tie. lol Half of the staff favored the American brand and half favored the Canadian version. And we are all American here but it was still about 50/50 lol. Thanks so much for doing the video. I personally think the Canadian KD has an almost "smoky" flavor to the cheese, but the American version is obviously more creamy. To Each His Own. And yes I have twice had KD imported to me to my home from Canada-5 boxes each time. I love to make my friends choose which is better. Its always 50/50 pretty much. So Thank you guys for making this video. We all love you guys as fans. Keep it up. BTW I personally say "fork" but I have been told by many American friends that you are supposed to eat boxed macaroni and cheese with a spoon. Again. . . . to each his own lol.
Awesome! Ya there's probably no real winner, its just preference!
You can eat faster with a spoon and the noodles don't fall off as much ! 🤷🏻♂️ I always eat macaroni with a spoon for those reasons !
@@JosephDI actually really like KD and I am American...mac n cheese is too bland.
I import American Koolaid because they banned the powder in Canada. Plus you guys still have Sharkleberry Fin.
what kidn aprofessional chef intentionally imports macoroni and powdered cheese packets ?
I like President's choice white cheddar Mac and cheese.. blows KD out of the water.
And Annies white cheddar shells blows PC white cheddar out of the water
i agree i love president choice white
cheddar
100%
Next test!
I have hundreds of american friends that ask me to bring PC mac and cheese everytime I go
And we call our postal service "Canada Post and Storage"
When I was a taxi driver I picked up a posty from a sorting facility. He told me that before xmas they had some execs comeby and looked the place over. So to tidy up they placed some empty trailers at the back of the lot. Well in Jan they had to move the trailers .......uhm........one of the trailers was not empty. So a lot of people got there xmas present a month or so late.
I'm from the U.S. and I've always eaten it with a spoon because it's faster and stays on it. I do eat pasta with a fork though. I guess I never thought of mac and cheese as pasta. 😂 Also, I knew the US version would win because based on the directions, you added more fat to the US version and fat is delicious!! 😋😉
Its true, the Canadian version used to be good, but KD made the "Cheese" more natural a few years ago and ruined it.
I stab the fork into it to eat it so it becomes easier to get the last bits
*Customs agent sees KD going to America* “oh we got a home sick Canadian, pass”. *Customs agent sees Mac and Cheese going to Canada* “it’s gotta be drugs! Why would anyone want the American stuff?” There’s gotta be drugs in there somewhere”
On Sunday I was thinking I haven't seen any American vs. Canadian videos in a while and checked to see if I had missed something. And now here you are!
I eat my Kraft dinner with a spoon because i add abit more milk more chesse cuz I like it extra cheesy🧀🧀
So glad to see you guys again. I've missed y'all.
I'm so glad your comparisons are back. I really missed them. Thanks for the entertaining videos.
Bagged milk lol. You gotta make the sauce by itself. Mix the butter and powder, then slowly add the milk while stirring over heat until you get a consistency you like.
they served him a sandwich baggy filled with milk at thanksgiving dinner lol
Now what would be interesting is to take two boxes each of Canadian KD and American Mac n' Cheese. Prepare the KD with the Mac n' Cheese directions, and the Mac n' Cheese with the KD directions. Then with the other two boxes, make as directed on the respective boxes. Maybe the only difference is in the preparation?
The way he pronounces dans in French made me laugh 😂 love the video I love this concept of your channel it’s very interesting to see the differences I didn’t know about
Labeling rules are different in the 2 countries. Ingredients may be exactly the same, like maybe the pasta. It looks different primarily because what has to be shown on the package by law.
Years ago, when working with the recipes for an international food manufacturer, some US products had more sugar than the Canadian version, or had other differences.
Very true
They did change the Canadian recipe several years back. They took out the preservatives. It used to be a cheap go to meal for me, two or three times a month. Now I have it rarely have it. However, I will enjoy their white cheddar and creamy versions, they just cost more.
@@dustigenes I get the powder at Bulk Barn, and use more macaroni then suggested to stretch it, or add cauliflower chunks when cooking the pasta
Correct, Canadian wheat includes niacin, riboflavin, etc. often called "enriched wheat" and is mandated (or at least was in the past). And the "natural flavours" in the Canadian version is code word for MSG, which isn't actually bad for you but the percieved stigma has many companies hide its presence.
"Too strong" is the reason so many of us prefer KD! With a spoon , now that I live alone. 🇨🇦
For me, a spoon is awesome for Mac and cheese because you can just scoop it up. Plus, you don’t have to worry about getting cheese in between the teeth of the fork! 🥄 🧀 I’m an Annie’s kind of Mac and cheeser
Omg very important points for the spoon.
I just discovered you guys on U Tube. Enjoying the videos. How did you meet?😊
It's so nice to see you guys again. It's been way too long. I don't like mushy things so I make the mac and cheese, add parmesan and diced cheddar, two eggs, and bake it for 30 to 35 minutes at 350 degrees. Mac and cheese noodle kugel. By the way, don't add so much butter to the American version, it's just way too greasy.
Your guys videos are so well done. I love you both.
That mail situation can be blamed on T ..... . There are even posties dumping bags and bags of mail in dumpsters, garbage dumps, one guy hid about 50 bags in his garden shed. You’re lucky it got there at all.
Full amount of butter, whole milk, with a fork. But homemade, from scratch, is so much better!
Totally & it’s so much more fun to make
Everything's better homemade.
I think that Canada calls it KD, because not enough "cheese" in it to call is Mac and Cheese. It probably has something to do with Canadian rules. You need to try Canadian Kraft Peanut Butter and American Kraft Peanut Spread. There is a similar reason why the US doesn't call it "butter".
Glad you are back.......enjoyed watching
I saw you added the Cheese, Butter, and Milk all at the same time. I often do it this way. Butter first, turn on stove to really low until you melt it all the way stirring constantly, add milk, then the cheese, all on a low heat until all the ingredients are mixed up. Makes it quite creamy and good, I also go just a smidge above the 1/4 cup of milk to make it really good.
Spoon because I find it hard to keep on a fork and I'm Canadian
from quebec here, I use a spoon, but younger, I used a fork. I never noticed that lol.
Yay! The comparisons continue! 😁
They need to prepare the two using the same amount of butter and milk for a fair comparison.
Yay, a fresh video out of the oven to watch while eating instant ramen between two university classes. :')
Add some kd dust to that ramen! 😁
You gotta do the Kraft DELUXE Mac and Cheese, guys. It's in a whole different ball park! Better noodles. Foolproof gooey cheese and a BIG BOX.
Whoa! That was some pretty intense water boiling music from Canada.
Always a fork. Maybe they show a spoon in the US to get the tie-in with breakfast, which seems to be a thing there?
🤢 that stuff is so nasty
@@nicoletimko1285 Why nasty? It's the normal mac and cheese, just DELUXE. And DELUXE is good. Cooking some up right now!
@@peterkossits4794 because it's not actual cheese. Annies or PC white cheddar is my go to for boxed mac & cheese
@@nicoletimko1285 My box says Cheddar Cheese and Water for the cheese sauce.
I was thinking the same thing. Is there a Canadian version of the Kraft Deluxe? Of course, it was better when the cheese came in a can in the box...
Spoon! So that all the sauce that pools in the bottom of the dish is available to slurp up and relish. The same is true with the type that has liquid process cheese food in the packet instead of powder.👍
I'm in my late 30's and I don't eat KD anymore. They definitely changed the recipe/ingredients over the years and the last few times that I've had it, it tasted awful. I'm Canadian btw. I've always made it the same way (2 tablespoons of butter, 1/3 cup of milk) and I've always eaten it with a spoon (even as a kid). I actually found a cheaper brand they sell at Giant Tiger called "Italpasta macaroni and cheese" and it tastes a lot more like how KD used to taste 15-30 years ago when it was still deliscious.
Do they happen to still sell that at Giant Tiger? I've been looking all over the place for Italpasta, and I can't find it anywhere!
@@mayabee9412 next time I go to the local GT I'll take a peak to see if they have any. I think I may have seen it at The Dollar Store as well but I'm not %100 sure.
My daughter did a taste test with her friends about 4-5 years ago with about 5 different mac & cheese brands. And they selected the Walmart brand to taste the best. I believe labeled under Great Value.
You guys are awesome!! Thanks for posting! I’m a proud Canadian! 🇨🇦 lots of love from Mississauga, Ontario xo
You guys are awesome!!! Question! Has Jason ever had a pierogi, do they have them in the US? Many of my American friends have never heard of them. Something for another video lol ;)
KD may be healthier (if you want to call it healthy) but they definitely changed the recipe and made it worse tasting, I stopped buying it...
Stay safe!
I'm Polish, yes. We can buy them in most good sized grocery stores. Or mom makes them
Yes, we do have pierogi in the US.
@@jilliemc its legal to eat them, but smoking them is another thing... in some states.
Most short/small pasta, I usually use a spoon so I can just shovel it into my mouth hole. The bigger the spoon, the better! 😅😂
Joseph you should definitely do the zoom with the italian grandparents...so cute. I am italian /canadian also. Ever see Somebody feed Phil....halarious." You two are funny! Make some more dishes together....Thanks for making me smile. :)
When you say words like "rich" and "creamier" you are referring to fat. I bet you would like the Canadian product made with the higher-fat American recipe. I know when I was a kid, the recipe on the Canadian box had MUCH more fat, and even specified Kraft Parkay Margarine, not butter. Sooo hydrogenated!
Yes, margarine is trash.
Add butter and 35% cream to your KD..... Yum!!
@@isabelled1130 Ooooo, I like that idea!
You forgot to mention how the post office charged you brokerage fees and duty. I know they didn't but it took 3 mths to decide that the couldn't. My mom used to make us the same thing cept with spagetti and made from real cheese and milk. We loved it but it was so long ago I can't remember how it compared to KD. Probably not though.
The butter is the deal. I don't even add any milk anymore just butter it up!
First?
Joseph DeBenedictis second
LOL 🤣🤣🤣
Isn't this cheating? LOL
🤣
I hope so.
KD went with the more natural recipe a couple years ago and I noticed the smell and taste difference immediately. It had this weird plastic/waxy smell and taste to it that made it worse in every way.
P.S: Evaporated milk works best in boxed mac and cheese, give it a try, I believe you won't be disappointed.
Love the video....!!! You guys are great...!! Your baby girl is adorable Joseph...!!
I'm from Canada and I use a spoon. Quicker and easier to eat. I also prefer Annies now days than KD.
So does my kid...like Annies better.
I finally got a friend from the U.S to send me up a package and I returned the favour with her, her entire family preferred the American version and my Canadian family chose the Canadian version. We also added another challenge in and tried the difference between American Kit Kat vs Canadian, the Canadian version won by everyone
Annie’s brand Mac and cheese is much better😉
The secret to the Canadian one is just to add more butter. I have never used the proper instructions for KD, but definitely more butter and less milk does the trick.
Y'all finding answers to the real questions and I'm here for it! ♡
I did not expect Joseph to pick the American version! I feel like I need to compare for myself.
😆
Yay! We missed you guys
Always enjoy watching haha
Glad to hear it!
So crazy he got a notification that his package had been delivered
Hey guys! Clive here from Pickering Ontario 🇨🇦...Big fan of all your videos.. but you guys forgot to try your taste test each countries KD (or mac&cheese) using both a spoon and a fork as pictured on the different countries boxes 😆
I melt the powdered cheese, butter, and milk in a separate pot to get it smooth and creamy, and then you mix it into the macaroni to get a really thorough and smooth blend.
I agree with your wife - you liked the blander one - KD is so good even hawkin's cheezies uses the cheese on their cheezies...
The correct way to make KD is to basically omit the milk and just add the butter/margarine and cheese packet
The sharp cheddar tastes like what original Canadian KD used to taste like. It's delicious.
Did Jason send that package on a slow boat from Buffalo? It looks as if it went for a trip down the falls and then the OPP dredged the Niagara River for the body, LOL!! My husband and I are both Canadians and eat our KD with a spoon and yes sometimes with Ketchup. The only time I eat KD with a fork is when I add hot-dogs to it. As soon as you said the American version had more fat (marge and milk) I told my husband that it would win over KD because it would be richer so thank you for making me look good!! Ask Jason why Keebler doesn't sell their Devil's Food cookies in Canada for me would you Joseph? Can't wait for the next video guys!!
Extremely entertaining Joseph. I didn't think I'd be as interested in watching this as I was. You earned a new subscriber
Awesome, thank you!
Because of the border closure, a lot of American mail coming into Canada is backed up. They are prioritizing essential mail over non essential civilian mail. I have a couple American friends who sent me birthday cards back in early August. Some of those cards still have not arrived. So ya lol, cross border mail is taking a long time.
Damn I was hoping it was a one off issue. In this case our next big video may take some time again! 😭
Missed you guys ! It as been too long since your last vid,i demand more. Maybe compare what the most popular YT channels are in Canada vs in the USA ? :))
You guys are hilarious!! Your videos are very informative and entertaining. Please keep making them. They are brightening my day and always make me smile. Great job and thank you guys. ❤️❤️
Just another example of how companies love to tinker with products to their detriment and just hope people will still keep buying it anyway. :p
Other examples are Chef Boyardee, C Plus Orange when they added Sunkist, Special K when the Canadian factory was closed, etc...
Canadian, and I always use a spoon for my KD because I make mine really milky and creamy and a fork would leave all the saucy goodness at the bottom of the bowl
You should do a followup test and add the same amount of milk and butter to both. That way the different amount of butter and milk doesn’t change the taste. It is more of a direct comparison of what’s in the box.
The taste test answered the question why the American one has more chemicals added. Also the extra scoop of butter doesn’t hurt.
Use a spoon when its fresh, use a fork for leftovers from fridge eating it cold. always use butter, always add some shredded cheese. anything from 1% milk to 3% milk whatever's in the house
Had some experience with shipping to Ontario with fedex and the postal service. For the exact same package, weight and dimensions, the postal service takes longer and cost more where fedex will get it there in 2 days for less money.
I eat KD with a spoon, but it's because I usually put in more milk. I also usually only use 2/3rds of the box of noodles so it's extra cheesy.
I use a spoon to eat my Mac and cheese, but I also use a fork, I guess I just take whatever is there when it comes to Mac and cheese.
I think I like the spoon better thought because the Mac and cheese noodles are small enough for a spoon, and when ever I use a fork I never actually poke the noodles anyways, I scoop them lol
Also I have never tried it with ketchup but thinking about it makes me want to barf
This is the new Mac and Cheese that everyone is raving about. Sold at WalMart and I'd love for you both to taste test these.....NEW Cheetos MAC 'N CHEESE (Flamin' Hot, Jalapeño & Cheesy!!)
i dont use marg anytime....ALWAYS BUTTER...and real milk + salt :)
I always add butter and cheese wiz to my KD. I dont follow the instructions and never add milk. Then sometimes on top i do a cheese/corn flake/butter topping!
I (Canadian) definitely use a fork to eat my KD! And I add about a tablespoon of Frank’s sauce when it is ready to serve 😁
I just make mine in a big ol' pot, stir it with a big ol' plastic slotted salad spoon, and eat it with said spoon. Kinda fun. ;)
Sometimes as a treat, I like to get one of those cheap frozen pepperoni pizzas and put it on top. Also fun.
I have a package that's missing in action for 3 weeks now... because you can't tell me it takes 3 weeks to fly somewhere on earth...
Extra butter and cream makes the Canadian K.D. Taste much better. Should try cooking them with the same ingredients to compare, probably not much difference in the actual product.
Add real butter and 35% cream to your KD.... Yum!!
I think the spoon on the American package is to make it seem acceptable for breakfast and equatable to cereal.
i live in Canada i eat kd with a fork. also i use to eat it a lot but they changed something in the pass years that made it taste bad. and ketchup yes
It’s about time for a new video 💕. I love your friendship.
Now, I need to order me some American Kraft Mac & Cheese :D
You guys are funny as always!
Love your friendship. Hope you get together again soon. Adorable and great videos.
A fork! (USA) - Mainly so I can stick the noodles on the prongs :)
Whats weird is your wore the same shirt every time you recorded your "lack of delivery" reaction
I own 5 of the same shirt :D
@@JosephD they must be bad luck. 5 different shirts the same color on 5 different occasions when you were pining at the door for the mail to arrive. It can't be coincidence. There must be some curse dwelling in the thread fibres.
It's the pandemic - people are averaging three separate shirts every two weeks! 😁
I add more milk than required and sometimes I will add 2 Kraft cheese slices to add to the taste.
I live in canada. And I've always added more margarine and less milk than the instructions. Also you can buy a Shaker of craft dinner cheese powder.
Last time i bought KD i saw larvas in the box. There was legit no holes in the box.Since then i stopped buying KD.
I am totally shocked That nobody even brought up the biggest point even once? Not even once whether within the video or in any of the comments afterwards?! What made this really fun and special video for me was The origin story of where Kraft dinner even came From and who invented it. If you didn’t know, kraft dinner was invented by a Canadian dude from southern Ontario that moved to Chicago To keep his powdered cheese business going And got his big break by selling his Canadian invention down there during the depression in the war to the army. Literally this food is itself is a 50-50% Canadian/American 100% original for both countries! I would hope to see some of the other travels heading down into the states in future episodes so I can see how the other half livesDown on the US side! I live out here in Calgary Alberta so I always wanted to see you compare the hard-core American slums with the hard-core Canadian slums just so I can see if it’s true about all the crazy stories people tell me.? I’ve been to Phoenix and a lot of places along the western coast but everything seem nice to me. I really liked Ontario/New York comparison because it gives me an opportunity to see how that contrast differs from our western perspectives of the same two countries. By the way….If you’re really in the know, the way you’re supposed to make kraft dinner is without milk or margarine, but rather instead put two giant scoops of Kraft cheese whiz Instead. Then message me back and tell me if I was right or not!? That old Canadian boy Kraft was a true genius….Cross marketing his own products like that. No matter how you look at it that is that totally the very best way to eat Kraft dinner and how to make it. Super cheesy! Lol
any Canadian knows the white box no name White Chedder Mac and Cheese from Superstore is soooooo much better than any other box brand..
Great vlog. So much fun.
Thanks Natalie!
Joe, I don't follow the instructions for KD. I put a tiny bit of milk and like a quarter brick of butter too make it taste better.
NO. Add the butter (or margarine) first. Let it melt fully. Then add milk. THEN add cheese powder a little bit at a time. Mix until smooth, add more until no powder is left. Perfect smoothness, every time.
add a spoonful of cheeze wiz when you mix it, or replace the butter with mayo.....delicious
I'm Canadian and Italian (dad) and I use a spoon. British (mom) so to put anything with my KD or Mac & Cheese I need HP (House of Parliament) (BBQ) sauce. Ketchup makes it too sweet. I like a touch of tang.
