Poland deservedly beat England 2-0 and qualified. Poland played brilliant football in the world cup and did the world proud! They almost won the 1974 World Cup!!
Poland deservedly won, but they didn't secure qualification in this game, it was the 1-1 draw at Wembley a few months later that sent them to the World Cup.
This World Cup qualifier with Poland at Katowice on June 6 1973 ended in a 2-0 defeat for England. The visitors were hoping for full points after garnering only three points in two matches with Wales earlier at Ninian Park and at Wembley which ended 1-0 and 1-1 respectively. England were stunned in this match with Jan Banas and Wlodek Lubanski scoring for the Poles. And to add salt to England's defeat, midfielder Alan Ball was sent off by the Austrian referee in the 78th minute.
Poland had a strong team back in those days as they would go on to finish third in 74 World Cup. In hindsight Ramsey should have left the England role after the 1970 Mexico tournament.
England dominated possession but Poland just were more mentally aware of the chances they could get and they were physically clinical with the chances they got and buried two of em and England didn't do much despite all the possession it was just like swing it in the box and hope for the best and Poland were more adventurous and were taking long range shots and finding players better with their ground passing and link up play and just wanted the win more in the end and they went on to have a very impressive 1974 World Cup and Lato was the top scorer, legendary Polish striker.
Mick Shannon said it all " They even finished 3rd in the World cup and they were very mediocre ". Now, that's very disrespectful and he said that a few years ago.
steve kinlough Very disrespectful by Channon- finishing 3rd is great achievement at WC74, losing only one game to W.Germany, and even that game should never have been played on waterlogged pitch - mediocre teams do not beat Italy 🇮🇹, Argentina 🇦🇷, Brazil 🇧🇷 amongst others to get 3rd place - if I remember correctly we also beat Sweden, Yugoslavia, Haiti - Shame Lubanski got injured at this game and couldn’t take part in WC1974
Well. If they were so mediocre Mr. Shannon than even more so were the Italians (beaten 2-1 by Poland), The Argentinians (beaten 3-2 by Poland), The Yugoslavs (beaten 2-1 by Poland), The Swedes (Beaten 1-0 by Poland) and of course the (reigning World champions at the time) Brazilians, beaten 1-0 by Poland. That's a lot of mediocrity in one month of football...
Many coaches are too loyal to players. In 1986, Peter Shilton was out-jumped by a midget for the "hand of God" goal. Four years later, at well over 40 years old, Bobby Robson still had him in goal.
Had England won this World Cup qualifier with Poland at Katowice Chorzow on 6 June 1973 they instead of Poland would have qualified for the 1974 World Cup finals in West Germany. But they ended up beaten 2-0 by Poland and had Alan Ball sent off. It was skipper Bobby Moore's last ever competitive match for England and his penulminate. He would in November the same year played his last game for England. It was the last time too three 1966 World Cup winners featured in this match.Alan Ball,Bobby Moore and Martin Peters were the three survivors from the 1966 World Cup winning team. And the last time too the useless Ball-Bell-Peters was being utilized.
Me too! I was 7 years old and football mad (I would have been 8 on 21 June). Friends of my mum let me watch it on their new colour tele - England in gold shirts!
I watched this entire game & was screaming at the TV for Ramsey to bring on Tony Currie & Mick Channon to give us a bit of creativity. Alf's inflexible approach had made him a tactical dinosaur by this point. Of course after media & public outrage he did pick Channon & Currie in the return match where England created enough chances to win half a dozen games. But that is another story...........
Very intimidating atmosphere. The game was played during working hours so 1000's of Polish army troops were drafted in and England said they felt the hostile atmosphere from the moment the plane landed.
"It was the game for us to win" Really? With a single shot on goal? And the one any goalie (15 or 55 years old) would save? ;) The English totally underestimated us. I remember some pre game comments in our press; "They look like being on vacation" etc. Yes, our performance in Cardiff was abysmal, but that was March, in June our players were at their peak, English players exhausted after a long season... Watching it in black and white was... uuugh, an experience to forget right after the game was over :)
You are right that England did underestimate Poland, especially after you lost to Wales. You were helped by the fact that Alf Ramsey had become a tactical dinosaur by then & refused to bring on his more creative players even when 2-0 down. Poland were excellent in the 74 WC & were unlucky to be forced to play the Germans on a waterlogged pitch in the semi-final. Deyna went on to be a very popular player at Manchester City.
Ball was sent off in 79. minute, with England 2 goals down. Yet for the commenting pundits this was the moment England lost the game; the English were better, they would have levelled, but this unfair red card turned the game upside down. And anyway, they did not see well, but they believe there was some verbal altercation so Ball perhaps sort of got into trouble, but if red card, a Polish player involved should have been off as well. They did not even bother to play a moment, when McFarland fauled Lubanski. This tackle sent the Polish forward - the best of the team, 27 years old at the time - off to a hospital. He did not play for 3 years, missing the 1974 World Cup, and returned to the national team as late as in 1976.
It didn't come as a surprised that skipper Bobby Moore had in fact played his last competitive match for England as the 1966 World Cup champions slumped to a shock 2-0 defeat to Poland in this 1974 World Cup qualifier at Katowice Chorzow on 6 June 1973. Nothing went right for the visitors as two uncharasteristic errors from skipper Bobby Moore led to the home team scoring through Jan Banas and Wlodek Lubanski. Down 2-0 there was no way England could stage a comeback as to worsen matters midfielder Alan Ball was sent off in the 78th minute.
Poland had Red shorts. I think teams could not wear the same colour items. Maybe, England could have worn white shorts? The only reason why that would not be allowed is if each strip had to be designated a long time before.
This qualifier was part of a 4 match summer tour of Europe (the other 3 games were friendlies in Italy, Czechoslovakia and the USSR), and England wore this kit for all 4 games!
great Polish team Skilfull English players not liked by Ramsey - Keith Weller , Peter Osgood , Malcolm Macdonald. Dave Thomas the QPR winger or Mike Summerbee would have been good on the wing.

That was a nightmare to watch in b&w due to the strips, as 90% of us couldn't afford colour, plus we was happy that way until the 80s brought in LOADS MONEY! & out went the bw & in came the colour.
Indeed a dirty bastard, and had he not pulled back Lato when through on goal at Wembley , he would have ran on to score and put us 2 up. Yes Lubanski was at the peak of his career at the time and possibly given us the edge v Krauts in semi
To be fair, both teams deserved a promotion to WC1974. England have been a hell of a tough team and could then fight in the semi-finals. In my opinion, England would have won every other qualifying group except the Netherlands group.
England were humiliated 2-0 by the 1972 Olympic champions Poland at Katowice in Chorzow and in the process had midfielder Alan Ball sent off in the 78th minute. Nothing went right for Sir Alf Ramsey's men that day as owing to two uncharacteristic defensive errors being committed by skipper Bobby Moore the 1966 World champions were at the receiving end from the Poles who scored through Jan Banas and Wlodek Lubanski. Bobby Moore as everyone knows was past his prime and his defensive error in the first leg of the Nations Cup quarter final with West Germany at Wembley came to haunt him again. It may well be said that Moore's two errors were costly but catastrophic for England.Down 2-0,it did not help matters when Ball was sent off.
In those days, only one team qualified. England very unlucky to be in the same group as a very good Poland side - finished 3rd in the World Cup. Four years later, England again unlucky to be in a qualify group with Italy. The system today is much fairer.
