Poland played phenomenally at that time.
Poland of mid 70s to mid 80s was a powerhouse of football in the world .
They were semifinalists twice. Once in 1974 and the other time in 1982. They might have won in 1974 if the Germans hadn't let the field become completely inundated prior to their game.
Back when players bowed their head when shown a yellow card!.

I was there, as a 13 year old! A neighbour of mine whose wife had died recently had two tickets left of which he offered me one; the other one he didn’t use obviously.
The game was as spectacular as these scenes here indicate, and what an atmosphere at the stadium!

Deyna was some player.
Notice the Polish shots at goal while in motion to try to beat the one-v-one marking of the Italian cattenaccio. That requires coordination between the player who is going to move to some "empty" space to score (Szarmach in the 1st goal; Deyna in the 2nd) and the player who is going to assist with the pass at that space (Kasperczak #13 in both goals).
That's the WC that gave us the modern game and we have the Dutch to thank.

A parte gli errori di Valcareggi,nell'insistenza di provare alcuni laziali mediocri,non e' stata una bruttissima Italia.Forse con Boninsena e Riva!!!!!
Non si capisce il perche' dell'ostracismo nei confronti di Boninsegna dato che in quegli anni faceva sfracelli. L'ingresso di Wilson una catastrofe. Con il senno del poi molto meglio portarsi il vecchio Cera (33 anni) come riserva
Gigi, purtroppo, aveva già mostrato contro Haiti e soprattutto l'Argentina di non essere in forma. Quella squadra aveva un'età media troppo elevata, e purtroppo Valcareggi non l'aveva capito (e non era neppure ben consigliato, probabilmente). Così la disfatta fu inevitabile.
È proprio così, e lo stesso Chinaglia era appesantito e fiacco e a peggiorare le cose il suo pessimo rapporto col CT che ha causato dissidi nell’ambiente , comunque il quadro fisico-atletico della squadra era pessimo e con squadre atletiche come quella Polacca non poteva che finire così?
