Peter, could you clarify the specific reasons behind the retraction of Ward et al. (2022)? The study appears to be a desktop analysis that critiques the scientific methods employed by Professor Jonathan Benjamin and his team, without involving Indigenous participants or sampling the area under debate. Given this, on what basis does the University of Western Australia assert that its publication policies were breached? And does Australian science require Indigenous approvals for observations and samples on land and sea - or just those directly involving Indigenous people?
But they had to use the data in the original work, which involved data collected on Aboriginal land, so had to get permission from them. Nowadays the "ethics permission" at universities routinely requires permission from aboriginal organisations if the data was collected on their land and has any relation to the aboriginal people.
@@reefrebels Thank you for your measured response; it underscores the disturbing actions of the scientists and the universities that enable such behavior.
Thank you for the insightful video, Peter. However, I believe there’s a broader issue within today’s scientific culture that warrants attention. Federal governments, irrespective of political affiliation, have emphasized funding and recognition for ‘impactful science’-research that influences major decisions and aligns with contemporary social values. This emphasis can inadvertently steer scientists toward prioritizing socially beneficial outcomes over the pursuit of objective truth.
Some people may have heard of the claims made of mass burials at First Nations residential schools in Canada. Several experts have pointed out the uncertainty of the ground penetrating radar work on which several of the claims were based, and years after the GPR we see no signs of tangible evidence that any unmarked graves exist, let alone mass graves. The Country's flag flew at half mast for six months and several who dared to publicly question the reliability of work lost employment. The evidence strongly suggests that the claims of unmarked graves were based on inadequate evidence, but fear of reprisal seems to have killed science's ability to self correct.
