Excellent. As an environmental engineer, I have watched environmental science be destroyed by environmental activists who now control the funding of science and demand the answers they want. If you want to get another grant, spin the results to provide the answer they want.
This drove me to go into my own business, where my financial survival depended upon having a better understanding of reality than my competitors, and that reality was technologically complex (giving me an advantage).

      Benefits:
      Santos:
      - Tax rate of 11.5%, far below the statutory 30%
      - From 2013-2016, Santos earned AUD 14.9 billion in revenue but paid just AUD 3 million in corporate taxes
      - Over seven years (2015-2021), Santos paid only AUD 6 million in corporate taxes on AUD 28.9 billion of income
      Australia:
      - Tax contributions to Australia are disproportionately low compared to revenue
      - Creates jobs and invests in local projects, such as the Gladstone LNG and Moomba CCS projects. However, these benefits are temporary, tied to project development phases, and do not guarantee long-term economic sustainability.
      Wealthy and International Investors:
      - Receive billions in dividends and benefit from tax-minimized profits

Peter, could you clarify the specific reasons behind the retraction of Ward et al. (2022)? The study appears to be a desktop analysis that critiques the scientific methods employed by Professor Jonathan Benjamin and his team, without involving Indigenous participants or sampling the area under debate. Given this, on what basis does the University of Western Australia assert that its publication policies were breached?
And does Australian science require Indigenous approvals for observations and samples on land and sea - or just those directly involving Indigenous people?

    • @reefrebels
      @reefrebels  17 годин тому +3

But they had to use the data in the original work, which involved data collected on Aboriginal land, so had to get permission from them. Nowadays the "ethics permission" at universities routinely requires permission from aboriginal organisations if the data was collected on their land and has any relation to the aboriginal people.

Thank you for the insightful video, Peter. However, I believe there’s a broader issue within today’s scientific culture that warrants attention. Federal governments, irrespective of political affiliation, have emphasized funding and recognition for ‘impactful science’-research that influences major decisions and aligns with contemporary social values. This emphasis can inadvertently steer scientists toward prioritizing socially beneficial outcomes over the pursuit of objective truth.

Some people may have heard of the claims made of mass burials at First Nations residential schools in Canada. Several experts have pointed out the uncertainty of the ground penetrating radar work on which several of the claims were based, and years after the GPR we see no signs of tangible evidence that any unmarked graves exist, let alone mass graves. The Country's flag flew at half mast for six months and several who dared to publicly question the reliability of work lost employment. The evidence strongly suggests that the claims of unmarked graves were based on inadequate evidence, but fear of reprisal seems to have killed science's ability to self correct.

Liars are never nice guys or girls. They may appear well spoken and demur but that's their cover.
The principle of skepticism in science is most ignored in geology over the fundamentals sciences. Geologists talk about theories they accept to be facts and limit their field by clinging to ideas they never question.

With some form of writing that has been culturally maintained even if it's only rudimentary drawings it might be possible to record history beyond five generations possibly up to twenty generations if there's no great pressure on survival such as having to move en-mass due to rising waters that cover up all your cave paintings. From what I have heard of Australia and the very harsh conditions the natives have had to contend with and their mostly nomadic hunter gather culture , even if they used songs and drawings learnt from wrote with strict observance of continuity anything beyond a vague reference would not last more than five hundred years and definitely not twenty times that.

When I first heard of "the Dreamtime," I initially thought it referred to a distant point in history, thousands of years ago. While it is connected to ancient times, its meaning is far deeper and more complex. The moment of realisation for me came when an Elder, a custodian of Dreaming stories, explained that "the Dreaming" is not confined to the past but is an ongoing, living spiritual reality. Up North (the Kimberly's ?), cats, for instance, are considered part of the Dreaming, part of the Dreamtime.
Unlike written records, these stories are part of an oral tradition passed down through generations, with the Elder as the custodian. While this may mean the stories can evolve with each storyteller, this adaptability ensures their relevance and continuity. However, viewing the Dreamtime solely through a Western historical lens misunderstands its essence. The Dreamtime myths are not historical accounts; they are a rich tapestry of spiritual, cultural, and ecological knowledge that exists beyond linear time.

Mate, good try, but 99% of people on this site, including Peter Kidding, have their hands over their ears and they're singing LaLaLa at the tops of their voices.

Good to see scientists sticking up for science. You may well be biased, you may well be wrong, but you must be allowed to present your case for legitimate review. Peer review is about opening up your data and methods for criticism, by anyone who can validly criticise, that is all.

As I have a blindness to agendas and taking people at their word has cost me emotionally and financially a lot. I came to a conclusion, which should not be, that humans when it comes to money and emotional manipulation are not to be trusted at all. I cannot understand why some people would go to such lengths to bastardize proven and accepted practices for some, to me very nefarious goals. This notion has bloomed in the mostly so-called left leaning policies from the past and into social democracy ideas. It has subverted these ideas into communism and central control to the extent that should you dare to think for yourself and act rationally for a reasonably happy, free and prosperous life your are painted as a far right extremist hell bent to do what these left leaners are trying to do without acknowledging they have this agenda. Examples of this action is encompassing in the western world. Luckily there are leaders like Milei from Argentina, hopefully Trump in America and the guy who really cracked down on organized crime in Central America. Only time will tell if the "silent" majority will eventually wake up and see the threat to human existence as coming from inside a human need by some for control, wealth and self aggrandizement, and not from the bad science pertaining to climate change, pandemics and the inroads made on free speech and being in control of self with the necessary responsibility to your environment, consumption and fellow beings on this planet. one can only live in hope.

I reckon peak insanity is a moving target. In my opinion the people pushing these concepts are in a cult and are not likely to stop any time soon. It is critical that the light is shone on them.
    Please keep it up.

Just based on the amount of pollution coming out of that project should have been enough to Stop it. Then there is the Greenhouse Gas effect of Methane helping to Warm the Climate. Then there is the next to no royalties or Tax paid by Projects like this.

Would not those so called "stone tools" have been eroded into shapes not recognisable as "tools" after been flung around the seafloor for "10,000 years"?
