I’m a used car dealer and just purchased a 16 RAV4 34,000 miles and all original paint but the sunroof does not work at all & is in closed position I checked the sun roof fuse underneath the dashboard and it was good. Do you have any thoughts? This is a very well cared for vehicle it doesn’t look to be.overly used
Hi Richard. Thanks for your question. Being as I'm not there looking at in person, it's a little more difficult to troubleshoot, but I'll try. It might take a few back-and-forths, so it might take a bit. First, did you buy it from an auction, wholesale purchase from another dealer, or trade in from a customer? Next, does the sunroof do anything at all? Any operation?, or noises when pushing the buttons? - Sponge
@@spongestechtips-xu1xg bought at dealer online auction was sold sunroof inop, but this unit checked all the other boxes for me to take a chance on it. Does nothing , no noises, no power.. just dead. Again I checked the 10 amp fuse under the dash that said sunroof, and it was good.
Okay, sadly, many dealers will disconnect the sunroof if it has issues. They will look into fixing it, and when they find out it's expensive, they will just disconnect it due to the loud noises that it makes. Also, to prevent it from opening if it won't close. This might be the situation. Complete speculation though. If you go to the drive motor, you can check if it's unplugged. If it is plugged in, and not working, there's a good chance the motor might be dead. If so, a replacement motor is a much easier fix than if it's the tracks or drive cables. Sadly, if the motor is unplugged, and you plug it in and it's makes loud clicking noises, a complete sunroof replacement may be necessary. Replacement sunroof assembly will need to be sourced, headliner dropped, and sunroof assembly r&I'd. Chack the plug and motor first, let me know what you find. - Sponge
Ok so we took off the cover and found the circuit board (motherboard) that the plug goes into slides out after unplugging. It had spots of corrosion. Tested the motor and opens /closes perfectly. It’s the circuit board it got wet one too many times shorted out. Prices are all over the place on eBay/Amazon $100-$200? Stealer ship gets $600. Thanks for your assistance
Nice troubleshooting. If you have another like model on the lot, I like to test with an operating part, just to be sure. But, it sounds like you are on the correct path. The next thing I would do is look into why it got wet. It shouldn't. So, you need to check your drain holes and hoses for blockage. Also test to make sure there are no rusty openings allowing the water to get to the unit and circuit board. After it's repaired and sold , you don't need the customer bringing it back for something that could've been fixed while you were in there. Hope I was a little help. I purchased a used 2015 Rav 4 and the moon roof doesn't operate. Push the buttons, no noise, nothing. I'm in Washington State, near Mill Creek/South Everett.

I have a 2014 that clicks (relays) when I click any of the buttons but no sounds from the motor. Is there a hard reset without being able to tilt?
