If you are a 90s kid from Germany you know this movie! It's a cult classic! I guess it's hard to watch and read the subtitles at the same time, because there is soooo much going on! What's so great about this scene is actually that there is so much happening at the same time! The amount of details and little things is insane!

Nur so zur Info. Cult bedeutet in englisch "Sekte", oder wird damit eher in Verbindung gebracht. Ich nehme lieber das Wort "iconic"

Werner Beinhart ist schon ganz cool. Aber der Humor geht sicher in der Übersetzung etwas verloren bzw. braucht man Hintergrund Wissen aus Deutschland. Bspw. "Holzbein Kiel" für Holstein Kiel. Ausserdem hat Deutsch viel mehr Wörter als Englisch. Englisch hast du ein Wort, wo du in Deutsch mehrere Übersetzungen hast.
Moers and Brösel both deserve more recognition for being icons of german animation.
A few years ago Kiel played against Bayern Munich in the DFB Cup. Kiel actually managed to score the equalizing 2:2 in the very last second of overtime. It only took a couple of minutes for people to use the real footage and put Werners commentary on top of it.
I remember the people screaming in the streets, you cohld hear it through closed windows and everything (and I live a good 500m away from the stadium)

I can speak 50% of the movie along by heart - not the best movie ever, but I watched it almost every week in the late 90s and early 2000s(while playing computer games).

I was too young for PC gaming in the 90s, but it was one of our Pflichtprogramm Saturday night movies back then. Along with the two Hot Shots Movies and every Asterix. My parents had no choice in the matter when my brother and made a united front XD
@@ZerosWolf the Beinhart-movies and the "das kleine Arschloch" spoiled me for watching other animated comedies like "Asterix". They had such a high density of jokes, that others in comparison just couldn't compare. But yeah I remember when those movies were the highlights of the TV-week.

These days with streaming services, the selection is so big, it's hard to even decide what to watch at all. And in the end, I still end up on the same nostalgic movies XD

The guy with the cigar is later introduced as Werner's Craftsman Master; Röhrich. That man alone became a meme before they even existed. I think, nearly every Craftsman can tell you a similar story of his Master, when he was a trainee.

Werner definitely is a Northern German classic. It's also their particular accent that contributes a lot to the humour. Though a lot of German comedy is based on certain accents being spoken, expect for Loriot for example, who spoke a quite distinctive "proper" Standard German - which again often is part of the joke. Maybe the difference can still be heard by people not speaking German, I don't know.

The background story is that Werner is a plumber's apprentice with Meister Röhrich, and his sole other employee the Geselle (a guy who has finished his apprenticeship) Eckart.
In this context, there are two extremely good stories about Werner trashing a building site by making a bomb, and one about a heating repair attempted by Meister Röhrich which leads to the destruction of a house and him wandering around with a piece of sanitary ceramics stuck on his head, and this one. The other bits relate to Werner tinkering with his Mofa/Motorbike and ending up in hospital being kept awake by overzealous matrons. They are a bit more surreal.
My father was an engineer and a teacher at a vocational school, and for several years, this was the film he showed in class before christmas, as a "documentary on craftsmanship in sanitary technology and pumbing".
Trouble with the film is, the animation segments are extremely well-written, and to avery high standard. But they could not fill a whole film with them, presumably too expensive, so they made up the rest with another plot framing the animated bits, with actors. There were two later films which are not nearly as good as this one.
Four later films, three were not as good as this one you mean.

I dont know if anyone commented it, yet...One of the most iconic lines in german cinema is the end of the game "The ball stuck in the frying pan, it grows bigger and bigger ... until it explodes" ---------- Its such an ionic line and yet, we were never meant to hear it.... Klaus Blücher, the actor of Werner got so deep in that role, he kept reading. That special line was the directors note, of what happens next but Blücher red it. After that take, Brösel, the inventor of Werner looked at him "We keep that, thats original Werner"
The football match is by far the best part from Werner.
But watch the hospital part. This is hilarious and relatable.
The title song of the first movie "Beinhart" is a classic by the german band "Torfrock" ... you should watch them play it live at Wacken Open Air 2016. The band didn't look only like just some dudes from the cartoon movie, but also lend their voices to them in the movie. So the singer of the band is the voice of Werner. The band was formend in 1977 and are known exspecially in the north part of Germany. But they are still around and on tour! The guy with the heavy voice and beard is also in the movie as a cartoon figure ... great guy! Great voice! :) Check out their "WOA" show ... the audience loved it! :)
Unfortunately, since recently without Raymond Voss (he voices the president of the rockers in the film). His Low German version of "Seven Drunken Nights" is a legend.

Na ja, ob die Band Torfrock wirklich sehenswert (für jemanden der nicht aus Deutschland stammt) ist, möchte ich stark bezweifeln. Es wäre auf jeden Fall wichtig zu wissen, dass deren Musik kein Stück ernst gemeint ist - und eher alberne Blödeleien-Musik zum Alkohol saufen sein sollte. ;)

Torfrock is cool... my parents listened to this, when we drove to my grandparents in northern germany.
As someone who can't get anything out of actual football, and being from the opposite side of Germany, this is (and will forever be) still one of the best things I've ever watched on TV, the whole movie is absolute peak comedy.
There is also a "second half" of this football match in a later film. Which is also really funny. This is just an absolute cult classic of German animation. Really one of the best and as someone from the north of Germany I just loved that everybody started to quote this film in the northern dialect. This will always make me remember good family fun times from my childhood.

My mom actually worked on this movie so it's always been close to my heart. Werner is cult classic, especially for people from northern germany.

I've grown up in the 80ies and 90ies in southern and middle parts of Germany, of course knowing and loving this movie. Since close to 12 years I've been living in Kiel and know the very spot this scene takes place at. It's extremely recognizable, all the buildings surrounding that central square ("Exerzierplatz") do actually look a lot like that, the movie just simplified it a bit.
That farmer's market still takes place there every Wednesdy and Saturday -- just without Werner and his soccer shenanigans.
But I do wonder how many residents living next to that place have over the years been tempted to throw a soccer ball down their from their flats. Especially knowing how much pride citizens of Kiel from my generation and before take in the whole Werner franchise being so iconic for our city and our region.
In the 80s I devoured the Werner comic books because they were so incredibly funny. At times I was just lying on the sofa laughing with stomach cramps from laughing so much.
The Werner movies in the 90s caused the next fits of laughter and even today, 30 years later, I still think these films are great.

The great thing about the whole movie are the quotable phrases thrown around as you can see in the comment section. Werner Beinhart created so many memes before the term meme was invented. If you ask a german male person if they know it most could probably quote a few lines from it. The football match is quite iconic but there are a lot of other great scenes too.
Not only German. I'm Austrian and as you might know the relationship between the two countries can be a bit strained at times but despite being very much Northern German Werner was a huge success here and many people still know quotes, even people born well after the film was released. And despite of the dialect being extremely different, much of the humour still rings a bell for us.
Werner“ is a whole franchise of movies and comic books that is centered around this northern German drunkard biker guy and his escapades. They have been around since the 80s and practically everyone can recognize the characters, as they are still in pop culture today.
Much of the humor stems from the absurdity of what goes on, but also from the way the characters speak, because it’s often super exaggerated northern German dialect, slurred through slang and alcohol xD
The thing is, the humor and feeling of Werner films and comics is mainly based on the northern German dialect and its phrases and expressions. In other languages, this may not work properly.

As a kid, this was simply hilarious, and had an immense rewatchfactor.
But even for adults, there is a lot of social observations and caricature packed into this, giving it rewatch joy even 20y later

That's absolutely nothing against you, I love your reactions. Especially with profound topics like with "Volker Pispers" or "Die Anstalt", because you are a very knowledgeable and intelligent person. Which you don't notice with many other people who react to these videos.
But I always find it difficult to react to things like this video or to German memes, for example. Many of these things get their humor from puns or their pronunciation. Things that are of course completely lost in translation.

Werner started as a series of comic books of quite that style already in the 1980ies. They were quite popular all over Germany, here in the very south too.
I live in the small Town Süderbrarup and to hear you saying the name of it, is quiet special , because I watch your content for quiet a while now. You even pronounced it correct. 😅
Many details simply reflect the mood, the atmosphere of the country at the time, that's what makes it so incredibly iconic... unique, goofy characters, so loving and authentic... plus creative nonsense and just a good atmosphere like from a real football game. .. it all just fits together
I was born in 1994 and I remember my father watching this movie on VHS on a regular basis. The humour overall never has been and probably never will be my cup of tea, but the football game made me smile every single time. Kind of the German answer to the football game in "Bedknobs and Broomsticks" ;)

About the people in the end of the clip: The movie isn't just animation. The overarching story is told with actors. The story is, that the creator of the Werner comic books has to make a Werner movie and the animated scenes are individual episodes he draws for the movie. The animated scenes all stand for themselves and can be watched individually without any important context missing. The people in costumes are from the beginning of the movie, where a scene from the movie is shown to the court of a king that can't laugh. Minor Spoiler: It turns out to be a dream.
The following movies except for the 5th were completely animated with no live action.
Werner is one of the most iconic figures of the 80s and 90s. I know the entire movie by heart. The famous Süderbrarup v Holzbein Kiel match takes place on a rendition of the Exerzierplatz in Kiel, where to this day there is a farmer’s market, on Wednesdays and Saturdays. So Werner pointing toward the 2nd half of the match on Saturday makes perfect sense actually…and it also means that this scene must have taken place on a Wednesday.
The best bit is: Many of the figures in the Werner universe are very heavily based on characteristics and behaviors of real life people from the author’s as well as his brother’s own past. Most notably, the boss of the plumbing company, Meister Röhrich. In the early versions of the comic books he was even named after the master plumber that the author’s brother Andi worked under as a teen. This resulted in a legal battle since the real life person was portrayed in a less than favorable light and did not appreciate being portrayed like this. As a result, the guy was renamed Röhrich. Still close to the original but just dissimilar enough to not provide grounds for more legal action. In the movies, Andi is voicing the Meister Röhrich character. Andi Feldmann also has an active UA-cam channel where he builds custom motorcycles and occasionally recreates things from the Werner movies. BTW, the heavily modded Oldsmobile Regency from one of the later Werner film exists in real life. It is parked in Brösel‘s garage.
The police officers are also heavily inspired by several officers that author Brösel had frequent encounters with as a young man.
My dad is a plumber by trade. He had many of the comic books, some of which somehow found their way into my possession. He told me that the „gas bag bomb“ was a real thing they did on a construction site, where they filled an empty plastic sack with acetylene and oxygen from a welding torch, stuffed it into a concrete drain pipe and lit the thing by tossing in some burning newspaper. The result was an earth shattering „BOOM“, lots of „Holy shit, what was that?!“ all over the site and a severe ass chewing by the foreman. No damage was caused, though, apart from a bruised ego. Note though that this was long before the movie. Not sure if it predates the comic book, but apparently fun was being had back in the day.
Yeah, my brother, bless his soul, also was a plumber and he also told me abt the gas bag bombs they built during his apprenticeship in the 80s or other hilarious stories abt the older colleagues 😂 must have been a fun time 😅

Thats my childhood right there. The old first movie has a very weird plot actually. At a later Werner movie they made the second part of the game on a camping ground. I think there are only small cut scenes of that available on youtube.
Hell yeah. I remember that one. And the anarchistic "Werner" cartoons it is based upon. "Werner", the "hero" of these cartoons, loves drinking beer, riding his Horex bike, and messing with the police. Just like the creator of these cartoons, Roettger "Broesel" Feldmann.
In the mid 80's he created a graphic novel, in which "Werner" and his friend "Holgi" got into dispute about Werner's Horex and Holgi's old 911 Porsche. So they decided to fight that out in a race. In this graphic novel...and then, they really did it. Must have been in 88, they set up a festival in Northern Germany, with a lot of rock bands, and, as highligt, a race between "Holgi" on his Porsche, and "Werner" on his "Red Porsche Killer", a modified Horex with 4 motors. Epic!

Seen it? The question would rather be who is over the age of 30 and hasn´t seen it. Yes i´ve seen it multiple times it´s a cult classic. I had a friend who could recite the whole movie.
The movie (and the other Werner movies) are based on the comics of Rötger Feldmann aka Brösel who is a north german comic artist. From TV reports etc. Brösel is a pretty cool and humble dude.
I lived in Kiel for a few years in the 1970s and I can relate to the character's dialects/slang and the locations. I must have walked across that market place hundreds of time in my time there. Even though this comic is of course 1000 times over the top there is still a recognizable grain of truth in it that will resonate with many people in northern Germany. -- Definitely a Kult-Klassic!
I grew up with this movie, from a young age. It shapes you and your ability to be humorous in a very good way.
This movie is a legend in Germany, some of the quotes from the movie have made it to fully fledged idioms of the german language in some regions, like for example "Nochmal in die Flasche schauen wie spät es ist" = "Let's have another look into the bottle for the clocktime"
I think Werner Beinhart even belongs to film culture in Germany. The film was a must-see in the 90s and even now it is a wonderful social satire.
TBH this is by far the best part of the movie... the Werner movies (there's 5 or 6 of them nowadays) are all good and funny... but the Football / Soccer Matches are by far the best parts... there is another one in a later movie

Everyone in Germany has seen Werner - Beinhart. (There are more Werner movies, but they aren't as good.) It's still shown on TV regularly and the comics are cult classics. The guy who draws the comics and animations is the main protagonist in the movie. Fun fact: The other characters (both drawn and live-action) are the members of the well-known rock band "Torfrock" (the voice of Werner is one of the two main singers), who also made the theme song. Their Road Trip to Corsica wasn't that bad either. The Trip down the Autobahn, Eckat's awakening at the resting site and the "Tour" through the monastery to make him drunk again^^

Jeder der zu dieser Zeit 8-35 Jahre war kennt diese Szene bzw. den ganzen Film und kann heute noch drüber lachen wenn er an früher denkt wo man diesen Film geschaut hat.
Es gibt heute mehrere Umgangssprachliche Ausdrücke die auf diesen Film zurückzuführen sein.

Der Film hat zu damaligen Zeit wo er raus kam eine Aufmerksamkeit gehabt die man heute fast mit Avatar vergleichen könnte. Nur das es nicht Weltweit war.

The thing that makes the Werner movies better then any translation could be, is the "off" use of german, that mainly from the northern coast/platt deutsch, wich makes it a very "special" use of german.... its tough to describe the hilarity of this kind of german, to someone who doesnt understand german!, but its truly glorious & often used here in northern germany!

My mates and i were obsessed with these comics in the 80's, growing up in the region. They actually reflect the mentality of the people pretty well and not everything is far fetched. Even the places where the comics take place are real.
I watched this Movie with 9 Years (1990) in Cinema, and i almost pissed my self of laughing for the first Time. Thats around the Time where Germany was reunited. Long ago. 😁

That was actually done in my Home town Kiel. The market really exists with those houses around it, at least around that time. You should watch the whole movie and also the other Werner movies. By the way, I really enjoy your comments and I am so proud that you enjoy German satyre. Cheers Karin
Werner was very popular in Germany "WERNER, die Russen kommen" :P. I also had a videogame with Werner on Amiga500 but I sadly always failed to construct the motorbike correctly :P.
"Holzbein" means wooden leg and Kiel is a German harbour city on the baltic sea ;)
He calls the lanky police man Hochbein which means high leg.
Sprotten are not sprouts, but sprats/garvies/brislings (anchovies of the north you could say). Werner is especially north german, as the author comes from the northern most city of Germany and that is also where the story is set. So of course there are jokes about fish and drunk sailors etc.
Just for you to know, Werner is originally a comic figure created by comic illustrator Rötger Feldmann. The comics were such a success that in the 90s and 2000s there were a total of 5 movies around Werner.
The funny thing is, that the whole Werner universe is kind of autobiographic about Rötger‘s life.
hey, I'm from Kiel ( the city this takes place in) and its so surreal to see someone from another country react to this 😂 everybody around here knows Werner but the further south you go the less people seem to know it :D the accent is really iconic and Werners voice belongs to Klaus Büchner, leadsinger of Torfrock. Its kind of hard to convey the humor of his way to talk if you're not native, but let me tell you its the main reason this is so beloved (:

Possibly interesting (wall of text incoming): The animated parts of this movie take place in Schleswig-Holstein, the northernmost state in Germany. Kiel and Süderbrarup are real places, Kiel being the state capital. The club name Werner gives is Holzbein Kiel (wood-leg Kiel), a pun on the real football club Holstein Kiel, which actually had been promoted twice in the last 10 years or so, now playing in the 2nd league, just missing out on promotion to the Bundesliga twice, including in their fist season in the 2nd league. Being a coastal state, Schleswig-Holstein has a sea and sailing culture (Kieler Woche is a famous sailing competition), their local beer is known to have these tops that audibly pop when opened, and they have unique local dialects, which is what Werner & Co speak in the movie. Not speaking german (I'd assume), you might not notice the difference, but for me it enhances the humour, as sometimes it's not (only) funny what is said, but also how, and this dialect/accent is just fun and charming to me, not having been around it growing up.

Ah! the Werner Comics when they made them into a movie. I remember reading the comic as i was laughing hard over that game and could not stop.
Well "Werner" was a hilarious comic books series and that "football game" was one of the highlights.
Most epic scene and everyone waited for the 2nd half of the market scoccer game which followed a lot of years later, but couldn't beat that famous first half.

I remember watching this movie in a cinema in Berlin when it came out in 1990. When the movie started the whole cinema was full of the sound of plop opening of the old style Flensburger/Bölkstoff beer bottles. Rough guess every 2nd one in the audience brought such a bottle. Was great!

Of the Werner-Movies, my favourite is actually the second one. The first has the funniest and most iconic stand alone-scenes but it’s held back a bit by the Live Action-sequences.

Fun fact. The creator of the Werner Comics, Rötger Feldmann "Brösel", got his artist name from the famous comic artist Robert Crumb. Brösel ist german for crumb. Also this man is the reason the world famous Wacken Metal festival exists. The story about this is a bit longer to explain.

Werner - Beinhart! was the first adaptation of the "Werner - Comics", written by Rötger Feldmann. In the first film, a very strange plot with real actors and the Comic - writer as main-actor build the frame story between the expensive cartoon-sceenes. I suppose, this was made to strech the length of the film to 90 minutes and to keep the costs under control. Although some of the jokes are quite outdated, the film is still very funny - and in my opinion, the best of the meanwhile five Werner - Films. The football match is the best part of the first film, but there are a lot of other enjoyable scenes.
Oh yeeees you have to watch this. This movie was an absolute blockbuster in germany in 90s. You can laugh from beginning to the end. I watched it a lot of times! 😂😂😂 Besides in this film they have a dialect of north germany. I love this dialect❤

Werner is legendary he started out as a comic, but later he got multiple movies. The movies have two stories to tell and are known for their special humor. You watched in this video some of Werners story and the second is about the artist Brösel who is the creator of the comic/movie.
Brösel brought a lot of his own experience from live into these so many things were relatable, but changed in a funny way.
I actually lived at the place that inspired this farmer's market displayed here, right next door to the apartment that had this overlook on the marketplace. While some say it's supposed to be the marketplace in Kiel, I still say that this is supposed to be Flensburg in North Germany.
A huge part of the charm of this scene comes from the North German dialect in which the game is commented. The voice actor of Werner, who is the commentator of this game, is also a huge comedic musician and probably one of the most famous voices in North Germany for this. He is also the singer of the comedic folk rock band "Torfrock" who did a lot of really great songs.

The best part are the names, too. "Zittermann" is like "shaky man" but it sounds like a regular family name in Germany. And so on. Loads of puns in the film. But yeah, rest of the film is just the same. Hope you had a watch yet?
this is a classic. seen that part about 400x times, me and the boys when we are stoned like ton rewatch it and yell every line like maniacs :D also since my childhood ive probably watched this movie in whole about 5x at least.
I know Werner's illustrator and inventor, Rötger Feldmann, personally. We met in the 80s and he also invited me to the famous Werner race. That was such fun. I´m from the city where Werner is doing his apprenticeship at Meister Röhrich´s. Fun fact: Meister Röhrich´s real name was Schurich, but the real one didn't want his name mentioned, because he saw the use of his name as a personal denigration and therefore had it banned by means of an injunction. The character Werner is based on Rötgers brother Andy. Man, it was a great time back then.
