- This is my review of the LEGO Ideas 21342 The Insect Collection, a far different product then what the initial LEGO Ideas submission was. Did it work out for the better?
Huge congrats to my boi @hachiroku24 for his idea turned official LEGO set!
Also thanks for providing the original project photos to showcase on the review!

hello frend!
I might indeed! It’s very colourful which I just love!
The claws at the front of the preying mantis is using a recoloured ghost blade from the LEGO Ninjago Season 5 : Possession
Honestly, I kinda love the changes. I like that it's all scaled better, and they all feel more connected together with the baseplates (which are really pretty imo)
Sadly a lot of it is complaining for the sake of complaining. You're not alone with your opinion; I personally like the changes too
@@JamesBD05sadly its a lot of complaining for very valid reasons,
Firstly they ask us to design it for them, secondly WE put the effort in to tell them what we want saving MILLIONS in product development and research and then they produce something that looked nothing like it, at an outrageous price quoting that ideas does not sell as well as other lines (because it was crap and looked nothing like what we wanted)
Take table football, if they showed us what we would have got not a single fan would have voted for it, and that showed, the worst selling product ever produced by Lego
@@samwalker8893 I don't understand why Lego fanatics, or really any consumer group for that matter, thinks that they're entitled to a product they desire. Why do you think you deserve exactly what you want?
And, I don't mean to suggest your life is lackluster, but to think you've succeeded in something by simply saying 'i want that one' amongst thousands of others, is just a flawed way of self validation; voting on something doesn't make you an integral part of their system. There are times when you need to just sit down and admit that Lego, along with other companies, don't care about your opinion, and if you don't like a product you simply don't buy it.
@@JamesBD05 well after all that….
You forgot the essential part, right until the last line….
Lego DID give a crap what we thought, thats the whole point of the scheme. If they just handed out products like a normal company people wouldnt be so annoyed, but they don’t, they deliberately involved us, deliberately made us do the work and mugged us off and the trade off. That is the difference. And then on top of that put extra charging and price into the sets that sell on the basis they need to recoup their losses on failed sets like the table football. If that had being produced properly it would have sold millions. Not none. It was (at the time, the fastest product to reach 10,000) so the demand is , was, clearly there. They destroyed it, then charged us for it. THAT is the difference,
Voting on it does make that difference because without the votes it hasnt potential, and thats why those sets dont get made. The costs saved in part production or first stage research is saved for product reinvestment.thats MILLIONS of whatever currency they want, so unlike your ill advised rambling, voting is an integral part of the way that line works. Without the votes NO products are produced
@@JamesBD05 huh, people should be entitled, up to a point. A company exists because people buy what they are selling
I think it looks better than the original design, which was already good but this takes it to the next level. I also enjoy the fact that the insects are in realistic scale relative to each other and even relatively similar to their real world size.
That butterfly is really cool. A complete butterfly set i would definitely buy.
Like a glass dome with 3 butterflies. That would be cool.
Not wuite that, but a Creator 3-1 set came out recently that has a butterfly for a b-model. The A model was a peacock, if you want to find it
Props to the guy who submitted these but the final version is definitly an upgrade if you ask me C:
brother I agree with you.. this set looks way too gorgeous to pass on
douptful the designer imaged such a high budget production for idea. is insects are like 15€ each and what we got was roughly 27€ per insect,
TBH this looks fantastic compared to the designer submission. The colors pop more and the display elements present the insects in a more professional manner as opposed to looking like a kids' toy. It also implements well with the botanical sets and I'm tempted to get it because of that. Well done LEGO!
I also think this is one of the very rare cases lego improved the original idea, at least from a display perspective
The rest of the set is great but the butterfly is definitely a downgrade
@@obi-wanken5428 I disagree. I feel like the original butterfly was too blocky (I know we are talking about LEGO). The new version looks more slender and even fragile, which is what a butterfly should look like (imo).
@@Kleiser342 I get that, but the use of bricks on the original allows for more detail on the wings. For me, I like the old butterfly. The environments around the bugs are cool, and the colors are better on the new one.
Those who are wondering, the white lego peice under the wood on the beetle build are supposed to be slug mites. (I think they are supposed to be that, I may be wrong)
I think the baguettes under the Hercules beetle display are actually Hercules beetle larva, which feed on dead wood and live underground until they emerge outside to mate as the massive insects we know. :)
this is the first lego set i've gotten in over a decade. i'm a big fan of insects and at this point i care more about nice display pieces than something i can play with, so both the bases and the individual insects being to scale is wonderful! the bases all using interesting angles was also super fun to put together, especially since my childhood experiences with lego generally had more basic builds/solutions. the original idea is very cool and i'm glad it got picked up, but the changes really turn it into a perfect set for me.
I like the beetle and the mushrooms look really nice
I totally think it was upgraded, it's now all in scale, which is something that really gives "lego quality" and connectiveness if that makes sense, the display stands really help with well display, and I think the fact that technically all the original bugs are featured it is still true to the ideas submission.
Hichiroku is an absolute lego G. It’s crazy that this was the ideas entry of his that made it through.
I actually prefer the changes. The terrain displays are really nice and elevate the insect models in terms of impressiveness, display-ability, and pose-ability. Lego could have easily made the terrain displays as an afterthought just like a display stand like we see on the Concorde, but the foliage and natural look really improved the insect models. I initially thought this set was stupid when I saw the first marketing photo leaks and now its probably one of the first new sets I'm excited to build. I am glad they made all the insects the same scale. It makes it much nicer when displaying them together on a shelf. Overall, this set is awesome.
Thanks for the detailed review of this set. I am really glad they included the stands because displaying them is so important. Also you now can have these bugs sitting alongside any other plant set and the insects will give them more life. Seeing how the insects hold onto their environment is visually important in observing these beautiful creatures in real life.
I think the bee is actually cuter than the wasp. The wasp would be a great little creator set on its own!
I love the look of this set and am excited to receive mine. My hope is that this is the start of a whole new series with (in my opinion) tons of potential.
Really like the set despite the changes. The display stands were smart inclusions and display the insects well
I think these are very good builds and I love what Lego did here with the inclusion of the display baseplates.
I really love the look of this set with the displays. It actually makes me want to see way more like like this with diorama style animal sets.
I saw this in store I was surprised how big they were and they look stunning displayed. I was not going to get them but now is on my top wish list
10/10 the initial submission was good, but this is an AMAZING product!
Absolutely an improvement, insects are great but unless I can display them there is no point in getting them for me personally, that's where the base plate terrain comes in and does so fantastically
Great review Tiago, as always. Wasn't really interested in this, but now very tempted! Still waiting on your Concorde review BTW.
As one of the voters I am very pleased by the set.
This was infinitely better than the original idea for the insect set. this might be my favorite ideas set to this day
Ur the best, Tiago! Can’t wait for the concord review 🇧🇷
It's a nice set, but I won't be getting it, because of the revolvers in the legs. I can't risk becoming violent by being exposed to Lego weapons.
I won't be getting it because of the 80$ dollar price point
You too, huh?
I love the final design, and while upset we didn't get a bee and ladybug build...I am glad they weren't removed from the set entirely
With all the moving parts i could definitely see some mocs using just this set. Im sure at least someone is going to do that soon.
well, at least your videos are upscaling every time not so much like the insects set! hahah :) Anyway a must buy ofc!
I really wish the wasp was included or got his own set, such a good idea design and I'd love to see it in a larger scale, maybe with a
Rhinoceros beetle and an ant or spider or something?
I really wanna get my hands on this set!
Nice! I'm definitely buying this one.
I really love that set! I am a bit fan of Insects and espiacally the Hercules Beetle!!
I was not interested in the Ideas set. However, this I am. This is better than the Ideas set.
The changes make the insects look 10 times better
got it! i love this sets as a kid that used to collect insects
I like the beetle more with the closed shell. It looks less all over the place in my opinion.
Whoa so cool
This set has 2 of my favorite insects i was never not going to get it
I really like this set for how well they display and the really nice parts included. I would definitely take the wings of that bug and have a bunch of trans orange pieces to spare.
its very cool!
I got this set 1 day before release in europe. (Thanks my friends at the lego shop in China). I loved building it, no repeats at all. I like the rocks, interesting elements. The beetle was very good! The
Mantis sat fine on its own. no problem for me.
I hope we will get another set with the Wasp/Bee (Maybe also a whole colony or something) and Spider (I let my son build that one, thank you very much :P ). Maybe a walking brach or something.
I love the set but I do wish they put the brown underside of the wings on the morpho
i like the hercules beetle best and i like it with the wings open.
Interestingly, the ladybugs was previously released in at least the Spring Vip pack this year
Would have loved a full sized lady bird or bee instead of the beetle but understand that the scaling would have been off. Still a nice set though!
Just wanted to add, as an big fan of entomology, let me tell you those insects are NOT scaled properly amongst themselves, like, not at all lol.
How so? Blue morphos should be larger and chinese mantises are smaller, correct?
@@gavinmcphie6936 Well if you ask me, when you compare photos of each of these spicies in human hands it's easy to see that the Hercules should be longer, it can go up to 14-16cm (i've seen it myself), the morpho tends to have a wing span of 13cm at best but is really frail in a side by side comparison.
Compared to the morpho the beetle should look way bulkier and longer, the worst is the mantis, it's WAY too big, it CAN reach 10cm in lenght, but it's still way smaller than an hercules and it's so thin that it makes it looks very small in comparison to the other two.
There's also the sort of "bee", it's too small compared to the morpho and the ladybugs are the worst, they should be the size of the mantis head at least, here they're not larger than one of her claw.
I really don't care, don't take it wrong I LOVE the set, it just make me laugh they're justifying the changes by some kind of "reallistic size approach", when it far from it in reality.
I personally liked hakirochu’s original butterfly design with the snot wings but I think the new insects look fabulous
Yeah the butterfly is the weakest here, especialy with fact it looks like a simplified cartoon of real one.
ODST pod spotted under the mushrooms.
ALSO THE BLUE MORPHO STRIKES AGAIN!
Its a nice, build awesome videos👍
The butterfly looks like stained glass to me, in a good way
Did the butterfly have any spare parts like the the royal blue parts?
it is a shame that the wasp and ladybug got downgraded, since i think those looked great. but i think the 3 that got upgraded looks great with good part usage (really love the sand green revolver feet).
I feel as though the butterfly would have benefited from having translucent blue wings (in-part) much like the beetle does. Still lovely though!
Oooh! Spidey display review!
Smaller prices second set with the fuller scale bee and lady bug could be cool
Just realised that lego still put in ladybugs and bees 😂
1:53 Blud that Is NOT a bee that Is a wasp💀
Nice video!
I'm so happy their is an official praying mantis build :')
I really don't understand your criticisms. The insects look great displayed on the the stands, and would look boring or out of place without them. The stands make the whole scene feel more lively.
Tiago…
You Are My FAVORITE Lego Guy‼️
I like this set
The Praying Mantis display piece looks like it's going to launch the bug like a missile
The new insects look way better, and with those bases I can justify getting this for my mum who wants display pieces. This seems to be targeting the lego botanical fans so I completely get why they did it.
I love this set. And while there were a bunch of changes from the original submission, to me, they were all improvements.
The only thing I dont like is how Mantis is missing its front legs....
(If you dont know the front "scythes" are modified legs, and they use it for walking as well.
Great review! This is my favorite Ideas set in over a year. As great as Hachiroku24's submissions were, I am delighted with the improvements they made.
With such a favorable price-per-piece ratio, some interesting build techniques, lots of new parts, parts in new colors, and fitting thematically with botanicals sets, this made buying on the day 1 release a no brainer.
This is one the whole family will be building.
Ah, I never realised the two missing bugs weren't missing at all.. :-D i like the final but was really missing the bee. In any case, it's going to be hard to skip this set.
i was really going to buy it just for the (murder?)hornet!!😂😂
That set Is a maybe for me if I want to get the set or not
It would be nice to reverse engineer the other Praying Mantis build in the LEGO Ideas submission called Tiny World by Slekk024 unfortunately for us that is expired since it looks like a Praying Mantis and it can probably stand on its own
Cool set. I rarely buy a set, but I will get this one.
The changes were all necessary upgrades. I love Insects and this is perfectly executed compared to the original idea set, which was meh to me.
Also, I would prefer to buy them individually. I would not buy the beetle - 8/10 on the ick factor scale.
Looks insecttastic great review
Whatever happened to the aquarium collection?
I remember there being a clownfish, a jellyfish, and a pufferfish all inside these glass cases.
Those ladybugs.......so cute.
Will you review the new Star Wars sets?
Not sure! But I might!
Well the next review should be really brief considering the jet is supersonic 😂
Loved doing this with my wife ❤
Did someone say something about an insect collection?
*GAASP* an insect collection
this is exactly 1 off from being the kingohger sentai mechs.
I hope you use the Macro lens when you review the Hogwarts set!
I still wish that the bee and ladybug were bigger .
The ladybugs are not exclusive! They're from a CMF series
now i have a reason to not eat for 4 months
Just in case, the ladybug 1x1 with slightly different eyes was included in the winnie the pooh set. Prize 2 please.
Is the ladybug tile really exclusive? I thought it was the same as the "old" one? 🤔
The old one is cartoony
@@TiagoCatarino I see! Awsome!
Not to nit pic here but the ladybug is also in a friends set😇
I don’t think the croissants are cocoons I think they’re supposed to be maggots, right? Probably beetle larva
I really like this set, but I really wish they kept the ladybug
I think the lego designers betrayed the fan designer here.
I have the Lego set, and I built the bugs and not the stands
The mantis especially looks a lot better
I guess they
"1 2 3 change beetle"
I need the ladybug brickbuild for a friend, so i can´t say i like the changes to the original set too much.
As a set unbiased look, i love this. The insects look great and there habitats are adding not distracting, so a great job from the designers.
About the price i feel i have to disagree, i think for this amount of presentation i want to pay up to €70 max, and i love it to be €60,-
Many of these 1111 parts are tiny, so value is not to be given to cents per part ratio alone.
I think I would have preferred a $40 set without display bases than a nice $80 display model (I'm just over "ooh it has a black base!" in high-end LEGO sets).
I’m almost positive that that lady bug print has already been in a set but idk
There's already a ladybug print but its more "cartoony".
This one is exclusive as far as I'm aware
Oh, thanks for the clarification. I’m not the best when it comes to exclusive prints
Same, it's really hard to keep track nowadays
