    It is important to note: if you breathe to one side (mainly) then the other side is put into a more strained position. I was lazy in practice, almost always breathed to the right and my left shoulder got bursitis. Try to break this bad habit and alternate breathing.

    72 and I swim 3-4 times/week. Read Total Immersion. I relearned swimming stroke 4 years ago and this book shows me all the nuances of swimming correctly and with no injury. PT guys did miss the rotation and techniques to use the larger muscle groups rather than the tendoned connectors for propulsion.

    This biggest thing to Prevent should pain is to have good catch and pull technique. But also just as important is to make sure your body rotates so you’re not swimming flat like your skeleton when the pen is being pinched. Swimming flat on the water will definitely cause shoulder pain

      Just swim easy and slow for your warm ups.
      I also like mixing in all four strokes-especially back with the free-, and fitting in a bit of kicking or dolphin leg/core work… (even though I am horrible at kicking) just to round my swims out as a bit more full body workout.
      And I highly advise checking out a more complete video by effortless swimming on the subject of 5 common mistakes that can lead to shoulder impingement (pain):

    Great simplified advice! i will definitely pay attention to it! however i have a question.. Supposing that one does not cross the midline, won't the internal rotation of the hand (it is taught that the palms should enter the water thumb first) still set the shoulder in a weakened position?
    I have noticed that for me personally, what helped with my impigement was rotating my thoracic spine to give the shoulder more space to move..

What is the safe angle that the body should roll in order to prevent shoulder injury? Reason I ask is because I've seen this brought up several times and all the demonstrations are done on a flat solid surface.

      If you’re still swimming and still having shoulder issues, the last two are maybe very relevant, as they are from his clinic’s experience with swimmers who began as adults.

      @whatisahandle221 2 роки тому

      But, I’d also highly recommend taking some adult lessons or rec center / YMCA / masters lessons /fitness swimming training under the eye of an instructor or coach.
      A) They’ll help you learn proper form and proper techniques.
      B) It’ll really help if you can learn all four (or more) strokes AND learn to breath on both sides -& properly: you’ll get a more diverse muscle workout and also have more more fun.

      Ow! See a physical therapist, doctor, or chiropractor if it’s still hurting! Especially if you dislocated your shoulder somehow, you need professional medical attention. Even if it’s just something else that hasn’t happened before, you’ll want to find out what is wrong before too much more exercise that could exacerbate things.
      Good luck. Injuries stink when they get in the way of keeping yourself active.

    BODY/TRUNK ROTATION prevents/minimizes impingements. It's the biggy. Novice simmers swim flat like a pizza box. Olympic swimmers rotate the trunk, taking the pressure off the shoulder in the recovery (over the top of the water) phase of the stroke. And crossing over as you mentioned. If you are swimming outdoors you can see your stroke shadow and monitor is you are crossing over that way. Or you can swim close to the lane line and track your reaching out by brushing the lane line with your extended arm.

      Squared up shoulders will guarantee shoulder injury. Rotation is crucial and do not drop elbows during the stroke. Good luck!

    They are talking about 'swimmers' who have no technique at all. And they show they don't know how to swim. The totally forget one thing : free style (and back stroke) is about body rotation - which totally avoids the problem they are talking about !

    They should quit talking about swimming.
