Great tip! But I would recommend not switching AF-S shutter focus off, but instead just let the camera live in manual focus all the time and focus with the back button. That way you have both options at your fingertips: if you need the shutter to focus, you just toggle the focus switch from M to S. Particularly handy in situations where you need to give the camera to someone else to take a picture and everything needs to be as automatic as possible.

Sorry to ask this but I am newbie and AF-S focus off? Are you talking about the Focus Mode Selector or a menu setting could you explain a little more in simpler terms as I am struggling getting to grips with this tip? I have zoom focus issue appearing all the time when selector is in M setting ie the little sub focus area in the main screen

    • @remco2777
      @remco2777 3 роки тому +5

@@nigelblanchard5571 I am talking about the menu setting. In the video Chris suggests to go into the menu and switch your shutter focus off for AF-S. That way your shutter stops focussing when you half press it. On the back of the camera there is an AF-ON button. That AF-ON will auto-focus, even if the camera is in manual mode with the switch on the front of the camera. Chris points this out in the video too. Often people refer to this method of focussing as "back-button focussing".
My suggestion is not to follow Chris' suggestion for switching the shutter focus for AF-S off in the menu, because then the shutter focussing behaves the same when the focus switch is set to M as set to S. If you don't switch shutter focus off in the menu then your camera will still focus when half-pressing the shutter if in S, but not do this when you are in M.
Your zoom focus sub area will not appear if you press your AF-ON button when the selector is in M. It only appears when you change the focus using the zoom ring on your lens.

As always great video. Back button focus has been something I've always avoided with no real reason as to why. As I'm ignorant to the process what would the benefit be to using back button versus holding down the shutter button and recomposing? I'm struggling to understand the application where back button focus would be ideal?

Great video, but I am still a bit confused about the focus modes on my Fuji X-T5… yes, everything works exactly like you explain, but…. Is it not multiple times redundant, how the different modes / settings / combinations work? I can basically switch to manual focus mode, but with a with buttons settings even have object tracking via back button focus and wide/tracking mode. I can be in AF-C but not have any tracking at all, if choose Instant AF with Single Point…. I can be in in AF-S but disable AF completely… what?! I feel like it would just be 100x more intuitive to stick with clear focus modes, if they already put a physical switch on the camera, isn’t it? So that I actually just need to decide if I want to focus once, track permanent, or focus manually. Done. combine this with the choice of focus zone / point in AF-S / AF-C and then everything that we need is available in one single way. But having 20 ways to go to the same destination is soooo confusing…

I am going to an airshow this weekend, and I THINK I should use WIDE TRACKING to cover AF instead of ZONE.
That being the case, do I need to CONSTANTLY hold down my REAR BUTTON FOCUS (AF-ON) without letting up as each jet passes?
Why can't I just press it once, let go of the button, and keep making exposures until I re-focus on the next plane?
Thank you for your DETAILED EXPLANATIONS!!!😁

I become an X-S10 user and am trying to familiar with the operations for my use but the camera setting is bit complicated than other brands. Therefore, your video helps me a lot.
One strange concept is "AUTO" position. Even it is auto, the focus setting remains what I used by other position. I believe focus behavior must be also AUTO decided by camera.
Another complaint is that the click of ISO(400,500,640,800), Apeture(4.0,4.5,5.0,5.6) and Speed (400,500,640,800) 1/3 EV and no choice to change 1/2EV or 1/3EV respectively. As I normally use M mode+Auto ISO, I have to turn dials much.

    WHY DISABLE SHUTTER AUTO FOCUS?
If you want to get the said decoupling of the shutter and the focusing when using the back button focusing, why not just put the camera in MANUAL FOCUS and use the AF-ON button to focus? Doing it this way the shutter won't focus either.
And... You will be able to use the camera normally just by switching to AUTOFOCUS.
I don't get the need of that Fuji's option of disabling the shutter autofocus, to be honest.

Only when I half press my shutter button I see my shutter speed, and also the half way press of the shutter button creates a "EL" notification at the bottom left of my EVF , and that's weird because in the menu with the Wrench / Button Dail Setting / SHUTTER AF / AF-S is "OFF" ( setting in the AF-S mode and I am in S ( the S C M knob on the front of the camera )

If you have focus peaking turned on for manual focus, you get the red (or other color) indicator. That can be distracting when shooting, especially for a landscape - makes it more difficult to compose. So that's a reason you would want AF-S on.

Actually, after I've had my Fuji on backbutton-focus for a while when in AF-S, I realised some time ago that putting it in manual focus is a much better option to get backbutton-focus!
Because as you have shown, you still get all the benefits of back-button AF when in MF, and you get the extra benefit of having focus-peaking.
So the MF mode already works like having back-button focus, and better (because you don't get focus-peaking when in AF-S mode).

Set to AF- L the AF-L still acts as AF-ON (BBF) when the camera is in MF mode

Please note that AF-L does not work (is disabled) when face/eye auto focus is ON. :)

Good point! Also, I can't use AF-L in manual while recording, but it's all good while in stand by.. Did I miss something or it's just simply not possible to combine WHILE recording?

      Very nice!
If this is your first camera there are a few things that can be useful:
Some type of bag or pouch for safe storage and transport
Maybe a small cleaning kit with one of those blower things
      Maybe an additional battery
None of these are "really necesary" but can be really convinient.

@@swisshoumi Thank you for your suggestions!Actually It's almost 3 Months that I'm using an old Nikon but this is my real first camera. I really like Fuji software, look and features. I'll be 18 in 3 days and I'm so excited to get my first camera. I actually will also use the vertical battery grip cos I found it 100€ off the original price and I got big hands, non enormous but defenetly big so I would probably need it for better grip. I never thought about the blower thing but you're right, I might get it later, first things are lenses (18-55mm Kit and 85mm f1.8), a tripod and a filter. I'll get a V60 SD. For now that's all, but in the future (since I'm a telephoto guy) I'll also get a XF70-300mm and 56mm f1.4, maybe later I'll also get 16mm f1.4. Btw I'm getting a raincover, I like shooting rainy scenarios.

I’d love to see a AF-AE settings tutorial specifically for the XT-4 as well. Did you already have one or did I just miss it?
Nevertheless, I really enjoy your channel specifically on all things Fujifilm. I just upgraded my XT-2 to an XT-4 and discovered your channel just recently. Instantly subscribed and bashed the notification bell! Yeah I know I might have been (too) late to the game.
Already learned a ton of useful stuff that I didn’t even know about my XT-2 ! I’d really encourage you to continue this channel just the way it is and I’d consider a donation to do so. Your enthusiasm combined with your knowledge is a game changer for all of us Fujifilm users!

Hi, thanks for your fujifilm videos! I already learned a lot. However I still have problems with focusing. Today I shot a videoclip with the X-S10 on the Ronin SC gimbal with autofocus on. A part of my footage is not useable because of focusing problems. The problem is if the camera is on a gimbal its impossible to operate the camera AL and screen touch focus and so on with my hands while moving around with the camera. I'm used to a DJI Pocket 2 where the autofocus is reliable. Do you have any tips for my cirqumstances, best focus settings & handling while the cam is on a gimbal. Thank you so much!
