  • The Urim and Thummim of the Old Testament are a bit of a mystery. They were held by the 9” by 9” ornate fabric breast piece of the high priest’s garb that was decorated by 12 stones, each carved with a name of an Israelite tribe. Despite extensive descriptions of the High Priest’s outfit, as well as the 12 stones of the breast piece (Exodus 28, 39) the Bible is surprisingly silent on the Urim and Thummim themselves. What were they made of? How many of them were there? And what was their purpose?

Joseph Smith history section, to be found in the book called The Pearl of Great Price. Book of Ether, from the Book of Mormon. You might also be interested in the usage of a white stone mentioned in the book of Revelations. See Doctrine and Covenants Section 130.
Affixed to the breastplate, was eye glasses. Instead of glass, two triangle shaped clear crystal type rocks where inserted. Ancient seers covered their face with animal skins to darken their surroundings to use them. Joseph Smith used his beaver pelt hat in similar fashion. Seers using the Urim and Thummim were able to see past, current, and future events - in essence they received revelation.
Some might consider the usage of stones as some sort of magic, or something off putting. Remember God does His work with the most simple of things. Sticks, Stones, Water, Mud, Etc.

The Urim and Thummim are a type and a shadow of how God leads us in the New Covenant. In the new birth our high priest is Jesus who ever lives to make intercession for us and is one with our spirit. When we go to God in prayer, we do so through Jesus who lives in us. Just as the stones in the vest would light up in response to the high priest petitions, God enlightens our hearts in His presence as a way to lead and guide us, many times speaking to us through His word.

in sumerian urim means "distance closer" and thummim means "communication" the spelling is a little different but its amazing that a lot of myths can be traced back originally to sumerian words or even ancient sumer itself

    • @ninahajj4695
      @ninahajj4695 3 роки тому +5

Based on your explanation of the the meaning of the words Urim and Thummim; I wonder if it means we do get closer to God by communication “Prayer “. Back then the Israelites have to go to the high priest to pray for them, but now by Jesus Christ death and resurrection, we can communicate directly to God. We don’t need a high priest because the Holy Spirit is with us in the world to guide us.

It is believed and argued that the Sumerian tablets influenced biblical literature. By some it is believed that the bible plagiarized older stories from the Sumerian tablets because the Sumerian tablets are said to be older than the bible.
According to some it is believed the story of genesis comes from a much older story in the land of Sumer. The story basically states that their god Enki, who is known as using his intelligent magic often including trickery to benefit the good of the human race, along with Ninmah came here from their planet Nibiru and Genetically created man. After man was genetically created one of the "generals" from their race "Enlil" didn't like the fact that their race was intermingling with a more "archaic" species and wanted to let man perish in the deluge 11,600 years ago, which they claim is the exact same story of the fallen angels and flood of noah.
But the truth of the bible does not come from the sumerian tablets, in fact the Bible differs in many ways and answers many fundamental questions that go left unanswered by the sumerian tablets.
The main difference between the sumerian tablets and the Bible is that Genesis is quite clear about how exactly God created Earth. Genesis explains that God created the heavens and earth in seven days. God created man on the sixth day and then rested on the seventh day. The introduction to Gilgamesh does not tell us who created the heavens, the earth, or the universe. It similarly excludes whether or not the earth, the heavens, and the universe were completed and created all at once. Finally, the tablet does not explain who separated the heavens from the earth.
There is more I could go into on how I believe the sumerian tablets come from a fallen race of demonic beings but right now I want to focus on how the bible has a link to acient sumeria. The History of the bible in fact dates back to sumerian times and even further and has a lot to do with a man who was born as a Chaldean. According to Genesis, Abraham was born in Chaldea, the capital of one of the earliest civilisations on earth, that of the Sumerians). So it is in fact that our faith originates back just as far as the sumerian tablets and answers many questions that go left unanswered in the sumerian tablets as well as its said the Bible has proximately 2,500 prophecies and 2,000 of those prophecies have already been fulfilled... to the letter, while the remaining 500 reach into the future and are still being fulfilled.
Abraham in whom became the Father of our faith in Yahweh and His Son Yeshua, for all who believe in the Bible, was called out of the land of Sumer and from false worship and idolatry of the sumerian or Chaldean gods. The Bible states that Abraham was raised in “Ur of the Chaldeans”.
The Sumerians were polytheists. Polytheism is a belief system that worships many gods as opposed to monotheism, which is a belief system that worships only one god.

Urim and Thumim means lights and perfections. It is not a good vs evil thing. It is 100% good. Those who have the Urim and Thrumim are called seers, revelators, prophets. Seers used the Urim and Thumim to see past, current, and future events. Because they could be used for evil purposes, the Lord gave specific instructions on their usage.

Enjoyed this teaching, although I don't agree that all divination was outlawed by the law of God. They still used the casting of lots in the new testament and recieved an answer from the Lord. Divination to foriegn gods and that involved instruments of cruelty were obviously never approved by God but there were divination practices God allowed and would speak through. In proverbs 16:10 in the strongs concordance, the word divination is translated in a positive sense.
    ‭Acts 1:23-26
[23] So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. [24] Then they prayed, “Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen [25] to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.” [26] Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.
    ‭Deuteronomy 33:8-11
[8] About Levi he said: “Your Thummim and Urim belong to your faithful servant. You tested him at Massah; you contended with him at the waters of Meribah. [9] He said of his father and mother, ‘I have no regard for them.’ He did not recognize his brothers or acknowledge his own children, but he watched over your word and guarded your covenant. [10] He teaches your precepts to Jacob and your law to Israel. He offers incense before you and whole burnt offerings on your altar. [11] Bless all his skills, Lord, and be pleased with the work of his hands. Strike down those who rise against him, his foes till they rise no more.”

In the book of Deuteronomy 18:10-12, it is written: "There shall not be found among you anyone who... practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. For all who do these things are an abomination to the Lord."
The Urim and Thummim were different because they were specifically consecrated for seeking God's guidance and were used in accordance with God's instructions to the Israelites. They were not tools for seeking information through forbidden means, but rather for seeking divine direction in matters of importance.

that's interesting, it almost sounds as if the device was capable of these other things you described, but that god forbad them from using the device to do such things with it.
i always just thought it was used to communicate with god, but from what you wrote, it almost sounds like it was capable of much more.
i understand that to religious people it's an artifact of god, but to me it just sounds like advanced technology that was capable of doing other things, technology that was far more advanced their understanding, it would be like handing them a modern day smart phone that had the capability to speak with someone on the other side, but the smart phone is capable of other things, not just talking to someone though it, but also other things.
anyway that was just an example, i will say the urim and thummin sounds a lot more advanced than a modern day smart phone if it's capable of all these other listed things.
