I actually interviewed Kevin Toney in 2017 after his Blues Alley performance in DC. I actually told Kev i felt his solo shouldve infused more compositions from his Donald Byrd fusion years. His show lacked familiar 1970s Byrd classics. This show however is a neatly packaged musical tribute to Dr. Byrds eclectic but soulful ambiance. You can indeed hear his Detroit roots loud n clear via Gary Baryz, sax and Nic Paytons, trumpet. Fly lil bird Fly is too hip. Gotta love the quick tempo and Baltimore legend Bartz abilty to transcend the fast moving fours. Drummer and bassman some bad dudes...both needed to be IDd immediately at the outset.
Good to revisit this great stuff. Especially the electric repertoire originally produced by the legendary Mizell brothers! Drummer Rayford Griffin is doin' a great job here.
I saw Byrd in concert in 2001. Filmed it !
Donald Byrd , Gary Bartz , the Mizell Brothers, Bobbi Humphrey ..... my favorites, thanks for that GEM

Glad to see them keeping the music of Dr. Donald Byrd live! He was one of the most innovative & prolific Trumpet Player’s of all time!🎺🎺
