Jordan took a 2 yr hiatus from basketball and chose a sport that did not require the athleticism of speed, stamina, agility, jumping, and lateral quickness. Further, playing a sport where your lack of skill would not impact a game allows for much downtime and a more relaxed mindset. MJ is not the GOAT.

I was 15 when Jordan won his first title, 22 when he won his last. Growing up outside of Chicago I had the opportunity to see him play many times at the old and new United Center… Throw away all the stats, all championships… That dude was a Unicorn.. A rare talent with unbelievable physical gifts, unshakable will, in an era when u had to be a Warrior ….forged an historical athlete that may never come again… I hope it does, but most likely I won’t see it… Times are different, and in these different times it shapes different people, different athletes… And with all due respect to LeBron …who deserves to be Celebrated, no doubt!… There is an Ocean of difference between MJ and LeBron! …I would say one man’s opinion…but that’s a fact Jack!🤷‍♂️

I'm about the same age as Stephen A. We say MJ is better because we have seen both players played in real time, not because who's a fan of who. MJ completely dominated the NBA in the modern era unlike any other....mentally sharper...a natural born killer...a CLUTCH finisher...always relentless & better in both offense AND defense.

Kind sir, tell me with a straight face that MJ's opponents were at the same level as LeBron's opponents. No disrespect to my elders but you all either simply fail to realize or REFUSE to accept that todays average pro athlete is above the top best that ever was in the 20th century in terms of physicality, game iq etc. MJ did not play in the modern era.

Players like Ben Simmons, Cryie Irving and Dillon Brooks? Who exactly did Lebron play against who was so physically dominantly imposing? Mind you, despite having the best team in the NBA in the Miami Heat, Lebron lost to JJ Barea and Shawn Marion. Lebron lost to the 3-point happy Golden State Warriors. These players today cant hold a candle stick to the likes of Karl Malone, Patrick Ewing, Alonso Mourning, Shaq, to name a few. Today's players just work out and shoot threes and you know its true.

    • @ghwdapw
      @ghwdapw Рік тому +9

@@TheMetzor this really proves my point. The ''legends'' MJ played against, are considered top 50 because of the stats they put up IN THAT ERA. If you would take them AS THEY WERE and put them in the 2010's NBA, they would not put up half of the stats they put up back then and obviously if you would put some like Kyrie, Steph, or even Ja, no one would believe that moving at that speed is possible. What I mean by physicality is the development of the human body that has increased exponentially in comparison to the 20th century. You can simply see everyone being much more athletic.
Indeed, higher iq can be learned as you play against it, but that's exactly my point, MJ and the ''legends'' have not played in today's NBA which is much much faster, exactly because of the physicality I spoke about. Everyone in today's NBA HAD TO adapt to a much faster pace, because they simply are much better and more physically developed. I won't lie, MJ is one of the very few ones that was quite athletic considering that point in time, but it's dumb to think he was as athletic as your average professional athlete that exists now, especially one of the top 1% of pro athletes. But take Larry Bird for example, look at his clips and tell me that you genuinely think he was athletic. He was so slow and yet the defensive side still couldn't stop him. Now, that defensive side was the average NBA players BACK THEN that the ''legends'' put up insane stats against and now are considered the top 50. But the average NBA players back then would easily lose to a G League team or even a college team. 2024 prospects are insanely athletic as you should clearly see and the legends of the game wouldn't be able to keep up even with them.

That is an impressive accomplishment. I will say this. For me Michael Jordan is simply the greatest Basketball player of all time and Lebron James at this point is a solid #2. In addition to all of his great personal accomplishments as a player people should consider that Michael Jordan is 6-0 in NBA Finals and Lebron James is 4-6. Now making it to the NBA Finals 10 times is impressive. Breaking Kareem's scoring title is impressive but he actually has a losing record in the NBA Finals. Ultimately Basketball is all about winning and number of championships won should matter in a conversation about greatest off all time. I believe in being fair and I will give Lebron James a fair and reasonable challenge for getting my vote as greatest of all time. He needs to win 7 NBA championships to get my vote and finish his career with a winning record in the NBA Finals. If he finished his career as 7-6 or 8-7 for example he would get my vote. The greatest players find a way to win. Lebron James has had a great career but to surpass Michael Jordan you have to do something extraordinary to make a case for being better than him. For me winning 7 NBA championships and finishing with a winning record in the NBA Finals is a reasonable challenge. Do any Lebron James fans think he can do that?

No.2 for Lebron is an exaggeration. In the long run, his legacy will be inferior to those of Magic, Bird, and others. Even Steph Curry and the Warriors could historically mark this era more than Lebron. As a historian, my guess is that how he embarrassed himself in this sweep from Denver, ridiculed in all three close games down the stretch, will diminish his possibilities to solidify his position as a top 5-10 player in the long run. Kobe, Duncan, Dirk, and honestly, no top 10-20 range player could get embarrassed in conference finals as Lebron was in the last minutes of all three close games of this series. The guy kept throwing bricks toward the poor baskets instead of passing the ball and then was stopped in all three games in the final seconds.

Now imagine all the good teams playing that style back in the 90s, and Jordan dominated them all. *1.)* Yes MJ has 6 rings to LeBron's 4 rings which is a valid point, however team success is obviously heavily dependent on team support as well as the competition that they face. LeBron also has 10 conference titles which is the most conference titles of any player since the NBA/ABA merger, 4 more conference titles than Jordan won. The impressive part about Jordan being 6-0 in the Finals isn't the 0 losses, it's the 6 wins. Losing in the Finals (winning your conference) is more team success than losing earlier in the conference playoffs, that's a fact. The non-ring winning seasons and even non-conference title winning seasons matter. That being said, LeBron from 2005-06 through 2009-10 had more team success than any other player in NBA history has ever had over any other 5yr period with as little team support as LeBron had from 2005-06 through 2009-10 and most of that was before LeBron even fully entered his prime. Jordan from 1984-85 through 1988-89 or 1985-86 or 1989-90 had a similar level of team support as LeBron had from 2005-06 through 2009-10 yet he didn't have as much team success during that 5yr period as LeBron did during his 5yr period that I'm referring to. LeBron's 2008-09 and 2009-10 regular season carry jobs in particular were probably the 2 best regular season carry jobs in NBA history. Then LeBron's 2018 playoff carry job was probably the best carry job in NBA playoff history.
*2.)* Yes MJ was a 10x scoring champion to LeBron's 1 scoring title, another valid point. However that fact can be misleading considering the fact that the scoring title can be won by 0.1ppg and doesn't take scoring efficiency into account. The "scoring champion" isn't even always the best scorer, see Iverson winning the scoring title 4 times despite never actually being the best scorer in the league. That being said Jordan was the best scorer of his era and the best scorer in the 3pt line era (since 1980) if KD isn't, I'm just saying that he wasn't anywhere near 10x the scorer LeBron was or whatever some people may think that their scoring titles indicate. LeBron and Jordan were actually close scoring wise when you take scoring efficiency into account. Also while on the topic of their offense, LeBron was clearly a better passer than Jordan and LeBron won 1 assist title to Jordan's 0 assist titles. However similar to scoring titles, assist titles can be misleading so it's better statistically to look at assists and ast/TOV ratio which still indicates that LeBron was clearly a better passer. Overall their offense is very close and can reasonably go either way.
*3.)* Yes Jordan did receive more all-defensive and DPOY selections than LeBron, but those types of awards are voted upon by a certain group of people and are therefore irrelevant when making your own individual assessment of a player since no individual has to agree with them. The same thing goes for MVPs, FMVPs, all-NBA selections or ANY other award that is voted upon. Not to mention LeBron was going against tougher competition for those irrelevant all-defensive selections than Jordan was since LeBron was competing against SFs and PFs for selections while Jordan was competing against PGs and SGs for selections. The only thing you should really need to know in order to know that those voted upon awards are bogus and should be ignored is the fact that Marc Gasol won DPOY when he was 2nd team all-defense... There is at least 1 other example of something similar that I am forgetting, but that example is already enough. Forget those awards, think for yourself and give your own on-court reasoning. That being said, LeBron and Jordan's defense is very close before even taking rebounding into account. Yes Jordan was a better man defender against 1s through 3s, but LeBron was a better man defender against 4s and 5s while their off-ball defense was pretty even. Then when you take rebounding into account you can reasonably say that LeBron is the better overall defender by a bit although I know all of the haters and the people who have been convinced by those haters will say that is blasphemy. All I can say to those people is that you should have watched the actual games throughout his career instead of watching anti-LeBron compilations and irrelevant opinion-based awards that are titled in Jordan's favor anyway (in terms of defensive competition by position).
*4.)* Yes LeBron has now been swept 3 times while Jordan was swept 2 times and yes Jordan's sweeps were in best of 5 series', but that is a marginal difference and marginal point to be made especially when you consider the fact that LeBron has played longer than Jordan did. Not to mention LeBron is the player responsible for eliminating teams with the most 4 game sweeps in NBA history if you want to go that route.
*5.)* Jordan wasn't considered by most to be the best player in the NBA out of the gate, Bird and Magic were still considered the 2 best players until Jordan's 3rd year in 1986-87 when most people seemed to begin to consider Jordan to be the best. Similarly, LeBron wasn't considered by most to be the best player in the NBA right away, but starting in 2008-09 about half if not most of the NBA community considered LeBron to be the best. By 2011-12 it was clear that most considered LeBron to be the best and it remained that way through at least 2017-18. But one important thing to mention is that again, this point is just discussing popular opinion... Popular opinion doesn't equal fact... Think for yourself and give your own on-court reasoning. I happen to believe that LeBron was the best player in the NBA for 15yrs from 2005-06 through 2019-20, longer than any other player in NBA history has ever been the best player for. From 2008-09 through 2017-18 I think that it was very clear that LeBron was the best player, or in other words I also don't believe that there should have been an argument about who the best player in the NBA was during that 10yr period like Stephen A. is trying to say was the case for Jordan. I believe that Bird, Magic and Hakeem are closer to Jordan than Kobe, Duncan, KD and Steph are to LeBron. Also Jordan's 2001-02 and 2002-03 Wizards years happened yet people like to act like they never existed while not excluding any of LeBron's early years straight out of HS or his later years when he was playing at ages that Jordan was retired at. I say that to say that Jordan was not even close to the best player in the NBA during his actual last 2 NBA seasons. I tend to not hold those seasons against him at all, but since the people who debate in Jordan's favor don't do LeBron the same solid in any way as Stephen A. is doing here, I thought I would mention those seasons. Stephen A. goes on to state that Jordan was considered by most to be the best "from '88 on", but that was after asserting "Do you know that when Michael Jordan was playing it was never a debate everrr as to who was the best player in the world?"...
Overall if you look at the full stat picture for yourself in terms of averages without even including LeBron's career totals advantages instead of just looking at misleading stat titles and irrelevant opinion-based awards, then you should be able to see that their averages are VERY close. Of course stats aren't everything, but neither are stat titles and irrelevant opinion-based awards. When I use the factual stats combined with my own observation of the players in order to come to my own conclusion about their effectiveness as players, it's extremely tough for me to pick one over the other, but the way that I currently see it I would put LeBron slightly ahead of Jordan. LeBron and Jordan are extremely close regardless of who you choose if you know how to be unbiased. It's reasonable to claim that either player is slightly greater than the other, but it's not reasonable to claim that either player is easily greater than the other.

Stephen A made a great point about MJ always being viewed as the best in the league during his prime. I don't like when we debate LeBron vs MJ because a lot of times it's an era comparison, and then who did one go up against, competition today is better than before, etc... I don't think that's a good way to look at it because the game continuously is evolving. So a better way to measure greatness is how much impact one has on his era. To me, MJ dominated his era more than LeBron has in his era. Furthermore, when MJ burst on to the scene he was doing things people couldn't believe. I hear too many times people talk about the 6-0 in the finals, the scoring championships... but people forget how freakish MJ was between 1984-1990. His athleticism, touch around the basket (people say Kyrie is the best finisher at the rim... they should see early years MJ...), acrobatic layups, dunks, aggressive defence, etc...People gravitated to Bulls games because they wanted to see what Michael was going to pull off at any given game, what spectacular move he was going to put on.. All these things he did before winning his first title.

It can be a valid comparison, because there are players that linked the two: Kobe Bryant, Vince Carter, Tracy McGrady, among others who played with and or against Jordan and Lebron. If Kobe was near clone to Jordan, and old Kobe destroyed a prime Lebron, we can safely say that a prime Jordan would destroy prime Lebron even more, because we saw them actually play, we'll just think MJ was playing instead of Kobe.

Kobe had 5 championships.. SHOULD have won multiple reg season MVPs.. he only played with 1 HOF level player in Shaq (I’m not counting Karl Malone & Gary Payton bc they were old).
Lebron had prime D-Wade, AD, Chris Bosh, Kyrie, Kevin Love, & Westbrook.. and won in a watered down Eastern Conference for most of his chips.. Kobe won in a much tougher Western Conference and with less talent surrounding him.

"The brightest candles burn twice as fast" LeBron has lasted longer due to advances in medicine, training, dieting. And because he had a prime DWade, a prime Bosh, a prime Kyrie, a prime AD, a prime KLove to shoulder that load so he could play at a higher level later in his career, which is the only reason why he is 1st in scoring. MJ had to do EVERYTHING offensively for the Bulls for 13 seasons that's why his game dropped off like most superstars did before this era. This plus Jordan routinely played 82 games a year, the last time LBJ played all 82 was 17-18. For the last five seasons he has only played in 55, 56, 45, 67 (covid), and 55 games. Yah LeBron played at a higher level for longer, but it's about when they were in their primes, who utterly dominated the competition, that was MJ, not LeBron. Longevity does not equal being a better player at their peak. People often make that mistake. MJ was the 3rd all time scoring leader in his 13 seasons when he retired, it look LeBron 16 years or 118 more games to pass MJ. That shows how MJ shouldered all the scoring in comparison to LeBron

when he came back got a couple broken ribs and injured his meniscus. and he still ALMOST put a team of nobodys +young rip to the playoffs. till the meniscus injury they were on pace to be top 4 in the east anyway.

Hate that this is the first discussion of choice you had.. You may be correct, but it just seems that you had your feet kicked up in the air wiggling waiting for this to happen.

The same reason most forgot Wilt is the same reason people will forget about LeBron.....I remember when Wilt was seen to be above Kareem, the early 80's Lakers changed that view.... in hindsight Kobe's Legacy and Curry will cast a Shadow on LeBron's Legacy

As a 35 years old and who had to go to extreme to watch NBA in the 90’s, MJ was and still is the GOAT.

Lebron has 4 Rings… and he needed a Superteam to get each and every one of those! (Plus that bubble ring that’s not even a real Ring$
