Matt, from Feral Farm, talks about a tiny house he built. This tiny house has a tiny kitchen space inside, and a much larger outdoor kitchen. Everything at Feral Farm is off grid, including this tiny house.
"Wizard" has lived in this tiny house for five years. He starts by showing us his tiny wood cook stove which also heats the house. For several months two people have lived in this tiny house - and not as a couple!
Some of the wood in the tiny house comes from the property where the house is. Wizard talks about how he is an aspiring minimalist.

Been there. Done that. Planning to do it again soon. Been paying on a house close to town for last 15 yrs and 15 more to go if I stayed. I keep thinking about how free I felt when my land and place were paid for. Gave it up because kids wanted skating rink and mall and not the creek with sandbar anymore. They're grown, and I'm selling town place and moving back to a happier existence just as soon as I can.
A Wonderful home... The truth is... as you got older or younger, as me, all you really need in life is a place to live and Happiness...just TRUE Happiness... And you'll have it all! God bless life and The Tiny Houses of the World!!!!
i liked this video. I thumbeded it, and saved it to a new playlist, i labeled off grid tiny houses. I am beginning a new self training experiment wherein i learn the off grid tiny house lifestyle. of course i will never go off grid, i simply want to be able to, if i should have to. The boyscout motto is "BE PREPARED". (i often have to go into the field to do jobs, which sometimes last more than a day. This will make the problem, fun and educational, instead of drudgery.
Awesome! Heated with a Four Dog Stove, Titanium model. Those stoves are amazing, weighs 10 pounds and will last a lifetime with zero corrosion.
Thanks for sharing!
Like this a lot. One suggestion: put the bed in a 1x4(or 6) frame and hinged to fold up next to wall during day to free up floor space. Have a folding table & bring chairs in for winter dining. I lived off grid for 3 1/2 yrs during 80's with no water or electric. Had to haul water (tried to find cistern plans at library and couldn't; didn't think about catching rainwater). Used candles at night. Would have been great if I had been there alone, but not with three kids in 12x12 with loft bedrm.
Yep thats me all right, the great minimalist, Cozy, all you need liven. Nice video.
I live in frequent hurricane area, and knowing how to cook and heath bathwater with tealight candles really comes in handy. Had all the rainwater I could handle because I keep large plastic containers outside yr round. I keep water hyacinths in a few - they really purify the water. The tree frogs supply all the tadpole I need for skeeter control. My dog prefers rainwater to well water. That tells me a lot.
I love the way you use the wood stove's heat to dry your laundry.
wonderful ..one day I want to build one with a giant view to the rain, the sunrise, the winter snow, to be one with the seasons as they happen....a room with a view...its everything you need and a bit of work to figure it out...shy
Hi. I built a 12x12 cabin w/loft bedrm & lived in for 3 1/2 yrs. I used gambrel greenhouse plan from book in library. I'm planning to do it again now that kids are grown. This time, I will use 2x4x12 for wall studs so I can use the upper 2' for kneewall in loft so I can stand up. I would also do a bookcase ladder like they use in tiny tx homes videos. Once I built my cabin, I decided to add a galley kitchen. Made one wall screen w/lattice over it so I didn't heat up cabin in summer. worked well
It's a totally different life style that you have to experience to appreciate. I am sure he has an outhouse. His time is likely spent reading, gardening, or just enjoying living amongst nature.
I have 5-acres in the mountains where I will soon be building a 16x16 foot cabin and living a similar life style.
@TheWhaler1 The roll of tp by the front door is a clue to the bathroom sitch. I bet it's outside somewhere. Hopefully it's a sawdust toilet and not a privy.
This little house is wonderful. 'These self-sufficient little houses are perfect for the thousands of homeless families in our state.
@novokarpati
Yes to both of you.
My tiny house is north of Seattle,Wa. The day I completed my last tiny house and moved in 2 years ago it was a cold February day 19F. The tiny house is fully insulated like the Wizard's and at 130sqft plus a 56sq ft loft it is toasty warm heated by a few handfuls of free wood supplied by a nearby cabinet shop.
Small house society has many members in Canada and colder climates in Europe.
This is really cool! Begs the question what the climate is.
That depends on the regs area where you live. In some areas, a larger structure without a foundation requires no bld permit. In other areas anything larger than an 8' by 8' shed does require one. Check out the regulations in the area you plan to build first.
The most expensive part is the land. In So. MS, there are still deals to be found. The bldg. inspectors don't care as long as you're out in country, have electric inspected and a legal sewerage disposal. Don't know if outhouses are still allowed, but probly in really remote areas. The bldg. doesn't cost much if you're able to scrounge from craigslist and freecycle. Nite before trash days are great in nicer subdivisions also. U need a storage container to do this successfully.
@speedbmp Do you remember the old commercial with Sally Struthers, where she asked, "would you like to make more money, Sure, we all do." When Paul says if you like this sorta thing...I always say, out loud, sure we all do!!!! love you Paul!! no response required!!
Best so far, no carbon foot print, :)
This is so charming! Definitely looks better than our college dorm.
That's a very good answer. We have much to learn from you.
If this is in 'Cascadia' could mean anywhere from British Columbia to Northern California. This arrangement would be easily do-able in southern Oregon. Not too cold all year round and very little in the way of bugs, it's too dry in the summer for them and the rain knocks them out of the sky in the winter :)
@TheWhaler1 if you ask this question out at permies.com, I know at least one of the two fellas hang out there ...
ALWAYS WANTED TO LIVE THIS WAY, SO PEACEFUL!!!!!
Awesome, efficient spaces.
That chain's beautiful!
very cool! I just saw a listing for a tiny house/space for rent near me and at a good price, I am very tempted to go and look. its only 200 sq ft and 200$ cheaper then my rent now.
Very lovely house, I love the woodwork he does too. I'm surprised it was $3,000, I would of thought by recycling plenty of wood that you could get it cheaper. I suppose he has some appliances that cost money, looks like a gas stove outside? Either way, enjoyed the video!
Try a sailboat. I have a 30 footer that someone GAVE me. Its in great shape and ready to sail from day one. I've been living on board for 10 yrs. Granted there is expenses but if you really want to be off the grid its very easy to do.
My space is a lot smaller than this one yet I have 2 beds 2 couches a galley and a head. Very comfy for me and the dog.
Although I do dream of having a cabin with a sauna and some dirt to dig in.
Wow, yes, well put!!! Blimey! What a good word!!!
As much as I love these off-grid-homes, but honestly, it's a step back.
Pretty Windows !! Love cooking outside.............but where is the bathroom and shower.......outside too?
Bears? Outdoor kitchen! Bears!
Depends what state you're in. I built a 12x12 in very rural South Mississippi on yr round creek. I lived there for yrs & never caught any flack from authorities. Only prob I had was trying to get electric before septic tank installed and inspected. Guy next to me lived in tiny travel trailer put temp pwr pole, ran septic pipe into hole in ground that emptied into creek upstream from where his kids swam, and HE got electric, no problem. Yuk. His kids were always sick from their own waste.
Outdoor kitchen, love it! Where was the bathroom/shower area? I'm curious about water, they could probably collect all they needed from the roof.
Very cosy!
you ought to do a tour of joe hollis' off-the-grid house in burnsville, nc!
Santa lost weight.
What wonderful interesting people! Really makes you think that anything is possible.
This type of living only works in a area with very low crime. The off the grid people always leave this out.
Man guys are my hero !!!
This is great! Thanks for sharing
enviable. well done!
love it, but...
where is the toilet? and (less important) shower? and what do you do all day, a tv i can live without, but no radio or a couple of hundred books?
answers appreciated!
I love it!
...really cool.
so how does it work so far as who owns the land you build the house own.
cause if i could swing it i'd could build something a bit bigger and be quite comfortable
somewhere if i could find the right location.
thx for sharing dude. much respect & Namaste
Is it possible to view a person's home without judging them?
OMG i love this. Great work :)
@cootercat486 Absolutely. I am a jerk. Thanks for noticing.
3:24 spread eagle

@novokarpati well if they have lived there for 5 years now, i imagine they have pondered it a time or two ;)
He's an old hippy and he don't know what to do, does hang on to the old does he grab on to the new. He's an old hippy this new life is just a fuss, he ain't tryin to change nobody he's just tryin real hard to adjust.
are there plans or blueprints for this home? I would like to build one
What part of the country is this in? Nice !
I bet I'm not the only one that says, "Alllll the time" with Paul at the end. :-) (Well I sure hope not! lol )
So, how about showing the place where he takes that roll of TP...
awesome............. what state?
Lovely
Interesting, but could a person live in that style of home if it were up north with below 0 weather?
HENREY DAVID THOUROEAU SUGGESTED THAT A RAILROAD TOOL BOX WOULD SUFFICE....(WALDEN POND)
Sweet.
what about storms with all the stuff outside?
Does the house have a computer carved from wood ?
yeah ...this is all fine and good...in warm , non-rainy weather...what about snow..?? have you really thought this thru...?
Don't misinterpret my comment. I like this way of life and want this way of life. State and county government fine you and make you tear it down, manufactured homes are even forbidden on most lots now..
Awesome
Does the gas stove work if so how? Propane?
do you have this guys contact info we would like to interview him for our you tube channel
What zone are you in?
@renh99 That was my question too.
well thank you kind sir.
The past tense of cost is cost, not costed...
im sure he could whisper a bear
One of these days I'm going to run off to California(?) and become a hippie.
the thing is that we make life complicated thinking that we can´t live things, Not true, in a place like this you finally will have time for yourself, to write,to create, it requiresw also maintenance and all is done by hand, you plant, you harvest, you cut wood, you improve, clean, do loundry etc..one keeps busy all the time...I live in a little bigger house boat but i QUIT modernity and seldom need money...
dumpster diving. Go to construction sites to see if they have any left overs. Yard sales... Craigs list. I just saw an ad for an 8 ft tall fence for free all you had to do was take it down yourself. The wood was good they just wanted to put in a chain link fence. You just have to have a space to save all of your goodies and when u do have enough find yourself a place deep in the woods and build away.
@Garyscott7
If you can't figure out a single point, you probably need not ask.
What about those that don't have much money to be able to live off the grid??? How do you go about doing this with low income/poor credit???? I'm tired of living in the city.
correction..."that we can´t live without things"
i would like a large home but a zero energy design.
The earth is yoour toilet. You need to give it back. You can meditate and communicate with your surroundings. Nature is all you need.
Good Conservative use of materials.
Can tell you are a good conservative.
How do you cook in the winter?
He uses his wood stove.
cool
@justmom66
Not all.
@isabstmr
Yes,although it depends on how judgmental the observer is.
It's not all about you and what you want people to think about you.
That is ego and vanity.
Most of us that live in tiny houses could care less. We sleep easy every night unburdened with the cares of those that think your home is your reflection to others instead of a haven in and of itself.
He's not a minimalist, he's a minimal-ish.
@coldiso i really wish i could understand what you are trying to say PEACE
WIZARD! Lol
"awesomenist"
I'd rather spend a bit more and not sleep on the floor
this is my first step to drop off the grid.
Nice lifestyle. Would love it with one exception. I see the toilet paper but I don't see the toilet. My ass needs a toilet. Minimalist or not. Can't risk squatting in the great outdoors and having something jump up and bite me on my.............minimalist.
well...I's bedurned...,
Before we became Consumers, the cottage was a place you slept, separated from the animals and elements.
