Season 6 Episode 8 - Masticatory Muscle Myositis

- Myositis is classed as an auto-immune disease. The own immune system attacks muscle fibres leading to severe inflammation, muscle wastage and the formation of scar tissue. Quite often, the masticatory muscles, the muscles used for chewing, are affected and the patients are unable to open their mouth to eat. It is a very serious condition that needs immediate treatment.
Anything that has the ability to influence and confuse the immune system can play a role in the disease. This can include vaccines, toxins (food and environmental), viral and bacterial infections.
The McDowells Herbal approach is to try and normalise the immune reaction overall. Most importantly, we need to optimise digestion and liver function. Herbs like Chamomile and Dandelion are very useful for this. We also need to normalise and optimise the metabolism and help the elimination of toxins from the body. That’s really good to hear, Hildegard. So glad Ditto made a full recovery. My beagle, Stanley, has about 70% jaw function right now. He’s slowly weaning off the steroids. I’m really hoping that catching the MMM before his jaw seized up completely, plus introducing McDowell’s MMM range, and swapping to a raw diet will all add to a speedy and full recovery. Have just ordered another programme of the MMM for a belt and braces approach and will continue onwards with the Conditioning Mix for months to come, as recommended by Nicky, the McDowell’s herbalist who is consulting for Stanley.
Just received my parcel from McDowells for my 3-year old beagle recently diagnosed with MMM. He’s been started on prednisone and mycophenolate; will be adding this MMM programme to the mix, along with Roar C and a probiotic (the latter starting next week). My vet has advised transitioning to a raw diet as the steroid dose reduces. Right now we’re also having to contend with kennel cough which he has picked up from somewhere, so have a week of antibiotics for this (as the vet did not want to risk pneumonia developing). My poor little fella is really going through it so am praying that this all works for him 🙏🏼 Thank you to Nicky at McDowells for the consultative advice given and to Aurora for expediting my order. I’m looking into this. 3 days after my 5 month old puppy (1/2 cane corso 1/2 coon hound) got his rabies vaccine he started drooling and being sensitive around his mouth and taking longer to eat treats. We brought him back to the vet after the first day of symptoms and the same vet that vaccinated him said he’s just teething. About 6 days after that feeling a bit better with some anti inflammatory, he got really sick. Puking, no eating, no drinking then she started pooping blood and we brought him to an emergency vet and he said this all sounds like MMM. We are just learning of this disease now, I wish I had known that vaccines is one of the causes. We’re not sure if it caused it, but it most certainly made it worse. Our boy is only 5 months and so smart and well behaved we want to try to give him the most comfortable life possible. 😢

Can i get an update on this? My 8 month malinois pup has developed severe MMM and he is so active that i hate to see this for him, i chose him from the litter because he had the most drive and this disease take away his favorite thing in the world as a high drive malinois, using his mouth, didn’t get him in prednisone soon enough so his head went from extremely swollen to starting to shrink in already, he has just enough jaw function to grab his kong but struggles to drop it if the bigger end is in his mouth
Hello.. I noticed that about a month and a half ago, the head of my puppy thickened to have some little holes.. I started searching and found that it could be MMM.. I took him to the vet, and he confirmed it.. But he says he can't treat him because he still eats, drinks water, plays, and has no pain. He is 3 years old. My concern is that, if it is a degenerative disease, to what extent can it hurt my puppy and what can I do to prevent its degeneration. .

My dog has a sunken skull at 17 , she also suffers from doggie dementia , I forget the name , but she’s on all natural remedies for that and she’s doing better. But for the sunken skull I’m worried because she’s still eating fine but I wanted to try natural things before going the chemical route. Would this be an option for her?
