I looked out the window toward Miramar Airport and saw one of our military jets making an unrestricted climb and I was stunned. In a few seconds it was higher than we were and we must have been at about 5 or 6 thousand feet.
Years ago, about 1988, I was standing in my back garden looking across the Liverpool Plains in Australia. I could see a bright light coming towards me and couldn’t work out what it was. A few seconds later an RAAF F/A18 was about 300 feet above me where it pulled up and went straight up out if sight. A minute later it came back down and went back the way it had come. The noise was incredible. Amazing experience and this video reminded me of it.
Even today it’s one of the most amazing jets still in service. First time I ever saw an F16 was around 85/86 when I was working in Air Traffic at Leuchars. It made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck!
The USAF has a different policy than the Russians. The F-16 is called F-16 Block "number", even though the latest block is light years away from the first ones. If this plane was Russian, they would go Sukhoi 16, 18, 20, 22, 24...etc.
I used to live near that air base...though it was Naval, there were always a lot of aircraft using it, Phantoms, Tornados, Hawker Siddeley Hawks, Sea Harriers of course, and loads of helicopters circling around all day. Always loved seeing the Harriers.
We have the Minnesota ANG 148th Fighter Interceptor wing 15 miles from my place. The F16s are always putting on great shows up over the base! Business owners get annoyed by the noise, but to ME, they're the sound of freedom! Spectacular machines!

Got to see F 104s at Homestead AFB in 69 do this many times, the hanger I worked in was really close to where 104 went vertical you could here the sound of the engine change we would run out of the shop to watch until they were out of sight. Worked in the F-4E engine shop
I worked on the 16 in the Air Force. We were TDY to Okinawa back in 05. F-15 base, anyone who’s been there knows it’s basically right in the middle of town. Our F-16’s took off first day full burner. We got fined for it ad written up In the local paper. Great times amazing aircraft. Loved watching our F-16’s dogfight the F-15’s. F-15 still has the best vertical take off, sorry Viper.
I was dumbfounded when I first saw an F-15 do that. Someone then explained that the "holy grail" had been achieved: the new engines could put out more thrust pounds than the weight of the aircraft.
First plane I ever saw do that was the old E/E Lightning....One instructor pilot quipped to his student pilot (on his first Lightning flight) as they were climbing vertically away from the runway "Dear boy, you'll notice that on the lightning, the only reason we have wings is to keep the wingtip lights apart"....=D
@@navnig Yes the EE lighning was doing this way before the F series of jets. It could go up vertical to over 15 miles but the climb rate was just over 50000 fpm. Max height was 88,000 ft. I got to see a pair of F14 tomcats do that out over Damneck,Virginia.The F15 faster than the F14&the ole F14's were just a little faster than the F16.Those F15's are still our fastest jetfighter in the USA.

I have seen test pilots do this at Edwards AFB years ago. I live very close to Langley AFB and watch the F-22s play a lot. I am yet to see one of them do this. If I remember correctly the F 16 can actually go supersonic going straight up!

The runway doesn't run parallel to the road it seemed more like it would cross the road if it continued. I just remember one seeming to come right at me and then all I saw was the belly of the plane.

I have worked there a few times... And have worked on many of these cool aircraft over the years....always a buzz to send them out after the maintenance or build is done...
I used to watch them take off in GA and its was the most thrilling times of my days. You know that you are safe and no Arabs, Chinese or Russians are coming with these Angels around.
I was lucky enough to see the The Thunderbirds air display in Malaysia in the early 80’s and they flew the F-16. Amazing experience and the pilots were super cool 😊
I watched an f22 takeoff at the airport on Oahu last August.....he went vertical at mid runway. And if you know about that airport, the military base uses the same runways.
I've watched them take off from Langley, oceana, and pawtuxent in MD. They have full scale models at all three places. And I've seen/heard them take off with the afterburners roaring. They can go straight up.
I used to watch vertical takeoffs from just outside Hill AFB. I finally had a chance to ask a serviceman who was knowledgeable. I told him I saw them do takeoffs and stay low until the end of the runway then stand it on its tail a ways then do level flight to the other end of the runway, then stand it on its tail again. He told me the fuel system had had maintenance completed and needed to be certified before it could be flown off of government property. Each vertical climb was 5000 feet, and if the fuel system could hold up through two verticals like that, it was certified to fly anywhere in the world it got sent.
The Yeovilton Air Day is an annual air show put on by the RAF, so yeah, they would have been there. I saw the Red Arrows perform at Transpo '72 that was held at Dulles airport. They're a great flight team.
I still want to know what was going on with a jet breaking sound barrier over Chattanooga on 12/8. Had to be some crazy stuff going on for them to do that?
Had the honor of working w the Security Forces of the 119th FW in Fargo ND during Operation Enduring Freedom in 03' and 04' helping the NDANG beef up security of the World Famous HAPPY HOOLIGANS. The highlight of my 23 years in the US ARMY. You HAVE to see them take-off at night and hit those After Burners. Mesmerizing.

Wasn't that many G's, it was going very slow, the leading edge flaps pitch down on the front of the wings causing that vapor effect on both sides of the canopy at low speed/high angle of attack
I remember an F-4 about to touch down on a runway in front of a celebrating crowd on Armed Forces Day when it pulled up and climbed what seemed to us like vertical at the time. It was sudden, unexpected, very loud, impressive, and really steep. It wasn't vertical, though. This F-16 was vertical. That Phantom had mass lift and power, though!

I once saw a 4 F4 Phantoms taking off at Hickman AFB after some 5 B-52s while visiting the USS Arizona Memorial in the late 80's... the sound of the Phantom's take off with full after burners was just amazing!!!!!! I cannot imagine how it would be all 9 birds performing at the same time

I watched a similar display in the 1980s standing on a runway next to a group of B52s. They went straight up. It was a strategic air command base.
Reminds one of watching Lightinings scrambling back in the day.

I tried an aileron roll once in a pa-28 161 warrior. Went way past vne & nearly shit my pants.
I tried this in a 737. Almost got it.
