- For those of you out there that suffer with Arthritis or achy joints this Plant Based Vegan Anti-Inflammatory Smoothie is going to hit the spot. Dealing with atrophy and painful joints in my fingers from having a cast on due to a broken metacarpal, I was looking for relief. Researching the most effective foods to deal with inflammation and joint pain I found turmeric and ginger to be on the top of the list. Dark sweet cherries and pineapple also happened to be high on the list so I decided to whip them up together and came up with this delicious healing smoothie. Hope it helps you as much as it has helped me.

Black pepper will increase the potency of the turmeric. Great vid, I just injured my Achilles playing rugby. I'm definitely going to try this recipe.
I was told by an IV infusion nurse that the black pepper is required in order for the tumeric to even work at all. The black pepper makes the synthesis of what the tumeric does happen.
And add a pinch or two of nutmeg, it synergises with turmeric.
I suffered from arthritis in my hip and knee. So I'm excited to try this inflammatory smoothie. Will get the ingredients tomorrow. Thank you.
I drink tart cherry juice and recently discovered dried tart cherries. I had been buying dried cranberries, sweetened with apple juice. I mixed a packet of the cherries with a packet of the cranberries, soaked them in water that I brought to the boiling point and then let it sit for awhile. Then, I blended the mixture and put it in the refrigerator for later use as a condiment with broiled chicken thighs. It was delicious and no sugar was added. It's my new favorite cranberry sauce, but with cherries too, for my arthritis. Hope everyone will try it.

Sounds delicious 😋
Glad that wing is healing up. I'm going to try the smoothie. Thanks.
This looks so good! I injured my hand yesterday, so it's timely, too. :) I would add pepper to aid in the absorption of the turmeric. Thanks for sharing!
Wow! Just made this and it’s delicious! Thanks so much for the recipe!
Get well soon, Jill. Hope your finger heals swiftly. Sending you lots of positive healing vibes from Malaysia....
Congratulations with 100K!!!
I was told that in order for the body to absorb turmeric you needed to mix it with pepper. Also I was never a great fan of ginger but now I love it. I once had a Thai lady cook some spinach first adding some chopped ginger and chopped garlic to the pan. Spinach isn't my favourite vegetable either but the combination was fantastic. Now I add ginger to all my smoothies.
I was surprised to hear how quickly you experienced the benefits of the smoothie. Since plant-based eating is new to me, I often think that it takes long periods of time to benefit from a plant-based lifestyle.
Great vid. I'll be trying this.
Hello Jill. I use tumeric every morning with a little black pepper & hot water for arthritis. Thank you for this recipe I love a variety. Your recipes are amazing! 💋🙌🌼
The core of fresh pineapple actually contains bromelain which is an anti inflammatory. I usually save them to juice or toss them into a smoothie to get that added benefit. Hope your hand feels better soon!
Me too
Thanks, I didn’t know about the bromelain in pineapple 🍍
Looks delicious! Get well soon!
I injured my back over-stretching in yoga, it’s been sore for 2 weeks, I don’t like taking pain killers. I’m going to try this. Thanks Jill, I hope your hand is better now.
Love smoothies! This will be a good one for health!❤️
I hope your hand is back to normal soon Jill! My understanding is that tumeric works a lot better when ingested with black pepper. It doesn't take much so you could add a grind or two and probably not even taste it. xoxo
I add tumeric and black pepper to almost everything! Thanks for the video. Hope your hand feels better soon🌻
I am sorry to hear that you're struggling. You're a lovely young woman who does a great Service and may you be at ease in your Body.
A bit of pepper increases the absorption of the turmeric. I make golden "moon mylk" and put a bit of pepper in it. It's not unpleasant.
I'm so grateful for this. I'm struggling with arthritis in my hip and am always looking for natural ways of dealing with it.
Have you tried the bamboo straws?
I was hopeful this would help with achy pain that I awakens me after about 2 hours of sleep following a yoga class or other more strenuous activity. I did awaken and the pain seemed less but I could not go back to sleep and ended up taking 4 Wobenzymes which helps tremendously although takes 2 hours for it to start working. Thank you very much for sharing this recipe. I added 3 dates to the recipe I made today which improved its taste (to me anyway!).
I am so trying this! Derek Simnett on Simnett nutrition always mentions adding black pepper when eating turmeric to increase absorption so might consider that. I will report back if it works. I have terrible arthritis in my hands so willing to try anything within reason.
So, reporting back after adding all of these to my morning smoothies all last week. I definitely believe my hands are feeling better!
Vegi Grl
That is fantastic!
I’m still drinking mine every morning too👍
Great..i will try it out tomorrow 👍💪❤️
I don't like sweets, but I think I could actually do this in the evening! And hubby and I both have problems with inflammation. Thanks!
Thank you for the recipe I have a lot of pain in my hands. I will try this out
ssusan3
I really hope it helps ☺️
Thankyou, going to try this.
It looks good and makes one feel good. I have been growing ginger and am trying to start growing turmeric. Thank you for this great recipe.
Autumn Meadows
That’s great! I am sprouting some ginger and turmeric to plant this spring 👍
Mainly because organic turmeric is so darned expensive 😬
I have planted some ginger and have a few sprouts - hope it grows. Found fresh turmeric for the 1st time this week, really jazzed about it. Hesitant to plant it though, don't want to waste it. If I find it again I will give it a try🌱
Thank you for the great video. I was hoping that you will talk about the two books on your right, maybe in another video?
Susanne Attia
That’s funny you said that. I ended up cutting that part out because the video was too long but I will do a post on it 👍
I’ll try this today for my arthritis. So today is my 68th birthday and my one year anniversary being whole food plant based. I feel great. But I’m mentioning this because you have contributed much to my success. Your recipes are wholesome, delicious and easy and I can make a batch to last a few days. That is the hardest issue with a special diet is always having something around you can eat. Please keep them coming. And thank you so much.
debbie Allen Happy Birthday 🎊🎁🎂
Make large batches and freeze individual portions. I make a large batch of 2 servings of veggie bean soup, and it comes down to 7 minutes per serving. I just warm them in the microwave. Always available, no waste or spoilage and it tastes even better when you reheat it.
The quickest relief is: a cup of warm water, 1/2 t of organic turmeric and because it's fat soluble 1/2 t of coconut oil and freshly ground organic black pepper. This combination works especially first thing in the morning!! But capsules without oil, black pepper and heat don't work! The Turmeric also healed my sinus problem and it helps fade age spots. It's quite miraculous.
Looks good....will definitely put this in my fibromyalgia diet
My husband tore his shoulder last fall at work but still deals with lots of pain and inflammation. Thanks for this recipe I hope it will give him some much needed relief.
J Bell917
I hope it helps too. Dealing with long term pain is really difficult to cope with.
Thanks for sharing this! I recently had parvovirus and it caused crazy joint pain and inflammation that I’m still dealing with.
I sure hope this helps a bit =)
black pepper helps absorb turmeric better! looks yummy
Tried today- didn’t have turmeric but I did add chia seeds
Yummm
I feel your pain. I broke all the middle knuckles on my right hand two years ago. Still have pain and stiffness. I will be giving this a try!
Justgrams4short
It really does help me 👍
I still can’t make a full fist and wake up with terrible pain across all of my knuckles ☹️
I just keep working at it 🤗
@@wholefoodplantbasedcookingshow I just finished this video and was watching the two ingredient yogurt, I got cut off. How much of the Acidophilus?
I put a chunk of organic tumeric and a chunk of organic ginger in my smoothie every morning but it is much healthy to have a green smoothie with lots of leafy greens like kale, spinach, add celery, cucumber ,zucchini an apple and half a banana dash of pepper for better absorption of the tumeric and water not milk or juice the ratio should be no more than 30% fruit to 70% veggies. It is best not to add a lot of fruit as it make the sugar content too high.
I severed the retractor tendon on my fourth finger had surgery to repair it and was in a cast for 5 weeks and had to do occupational therapy after. Trying to move it was so painful I wanted to throw up. One of the things I did every morning was run a hot sink of water and I put my hand in it and squeeze a dishrag over and over and over. That was what my therapist told me to do as well as strengthening exercises with bands. The hot water helps so much!
Kim Sheets
Thank you for the tips Kim, I hope your healing is speedy🤗
Great video as usual! Side note- best not use soya milk in this recipe, only because its higher protein content may reduce the absorption of the anthocyanins (anti-inflammatory pigment) in cherries a bit. Also fresh pineapple might - possibly - cuase it to curdle (cause protein clumping). Oat milk might be best as it's mostly polysaccharides. Herbalist here - all hypothetical but just fyi. Fantastic channel, please keep making the vids!
Also, a bit of fat & piperine in black pepper maximises curcumin absorption. So maybe you're right on with almond milk (a little fat content)- just add a pinch of black pepper too? Gilding the lily perhaps 😏
I love this recipe mmm I love this mmm
Hi Jill! Two things, please. First, I love this smoothie! I’ve been using it for weeks now since you posted this video and my arthritis is incredibly improved! Thank you so much!
Secondly, I’m going to get my mother-in-law to try this but I wanted to ask what kind of blender you use. Is that a Nutribullet? I need to get her a blender that’s as small as possible but powerful and the one you use seems perfect. Can you please recommend what to use?
Thanks and 💕 your show!
That makes me soooo happy Wendi. I truly understand the frustration that can come with arthritis pain. I am still struggling with it but the smoothie is still helping me too. =)
I got this Nutribullet at least 3 years ago and it is still going strong even with all four of us using it.
amzn.to/2DC2DT9
Thanks Jill!
So much important nutritional information in this video and that smoothie seems yummy! Going to the heath food store later to pick up the ingredients. Thank You. 👍
That's pretty uncanny, I had a very similar smoothie this morning because I am doing green smoothies right now for some healing...very, very heavy on the greens....like almost a full lb, with 1/2 C of just ground flaxseed, water and my fruit was frozen pineapple and cherries! I have the turmeric and ginger and completely forgot to put it in...so watching this reminded me to write myself a note so I will remember to grab. Since you are cramming the pitcher full, you are getting almost a full 3 qts of smoothie out of that which I drink throughout the day and then eat a salad and a little bit of cooked food. It's not what I want to do indefinitely but for a period of time for some specific healing of my kidneys...the high omega 3s do seem to be helping...and I'm "hyper nourishing" my cells with all the greens and raw veg during the day. I hope you get full and complete healing on your finger. I didn't know you had injured yourself as I am still fairly new to your channel, but I could tell by the way you held cooking implements that something was not quite right. Hoping the pain completely goes away and that you get full use and range of motion back soon.
Have you done any classic deli side dish videos? I’m sick of this winter and I’m waiting for warmer temperatures in Wisconsin. Any pasta salads? Coleslaw? Potato salad?
elmagnificodep
Hmmmm, great idea! I am sick of this cold weather too. Maybe some cheerful summery dishes is just what we need👍
Would coconut water be part of the nutritarian diet? Do you use it?? I LOVE LOVE LOVE your recipes! Just bought them both! ;-) thank you for sharing!
Jo-Ann Guthur
I don’t make many smoothies. I think it is more important to chew those same fruits and vegetables instead of liquefying them. It takes more time to chew that amount of food which gives your body more time to register that it is full so you end up eating less calorically overall. I think coconut water is ok to use.
Did you get physical therapy for your hand? Helps a lot. Keep up with it 3 or more times a day practice your exercises. It just takes time to get better. But it will. I broke 2 bones in my right wrist running around the track and it took at least 6 months to get well. I follow Dr Brooke Goldner MD. Great healer! Raw foods mostly for healing.
I understanding adding black pepper to powdered turmeric greatly boosts bioavailability of it. How does that compare to the fresh turmeric?
Yes, NUTRITIONFACTS.ORG covered this!! Thankfully it only takes a little.
Or instead of tumeric and black pepper, you could also use madras curry powder, which contains both of these spices *plus* mustard powder, which is a powerful antioxidant.
I have only seen fresh turmeric in my grocery store once, and our health food store rarely has it. Would using turmeric in powder form work as well (I hope)? Also, I always like to add greens to my smoothies (and black pepper when using turmeric). It would no doubt change the color (it wouldn't look as pretty), but I would do it to get more greens in. Thanks for another great recipe!!!
It will work but the health benefits of the turmeric are a bit less. =)
I tried the recepie with orange juice instead of milk and let me tell you I was barely able to drink it I dint like the flavor of either the ginger or turmeric it was groce I will try it with milk to see if it's any better I hope so because I need this for my inflammation and I'm going to have to drink it regardless if I like it or not but I need it to be at least decent 😭
This looks so good. In your opinion is it good to have as a breakfast or just as an additional drink? Im new to plant based eating.
I usually have it along with a piece of toast with nut butter
Thank you that sounds good.
Mmm I love this mmm!!!
I like the idea of fresh turmeric instead of powder...thanks! What about turneric or ginger paste? Any pros or cons? Remember, canned pineapple doesn't have bromelien..it's killed in the canning process
The pastes from the store usually have added ingredients that aren’t great
Hi! If I don't want the almond milk can I just use water? Or the almond milk makes to taste better because of the turmeric and ginger? Thanks! And I hope you get better soon from your finger ;)
Yadel Campos
I haven’t tried it with just water but I’m sure it will still taste good 👍
@Mildred Aviles 😀 thank you for letting us know!!
How long do you drink this smoothie
Looks great. I'll get some whole turmeric at WF today! One question... what brand blender do you have and how tall is the entire blender? ( I need one that fits undet my upper cabinets. )
It is a Blendtec professional 800. It is 17 inches tall. 23 inches with the case opened up.
that would fit (closed) under my cabinet. Thank you!
I don't like smoothies with any type of milk products...because of the taste. I've been using green tea. Would that work for this?
Catherine Franz absolutely 👍
What about adding black pepper to help with digestion of the turmeric?
absolutely
Could you do more anti-inflammation meals
I'm having pain on my chest what should I do
If I add extra ingredients to this will it decrease the anti inflammatory properties? I think this will help but also like to use my smoothies as a meal
Sure
What would happen if you added kale to this smoothie? Bet it would be great.
Even better 👍
I added too much ginger, 1 inch instead of 1/2 inch- it was really spicy LOL. Will keep in mind next time. Other than that, really good!
This should be one powerful drink maybe add beetroot’s
It is tart red cherries that have the most anti inflammatory properties not dark sweet cherries.
do you do one a day? how often please?
I have been having them twice a day because it gives me such great pain relief. =)
that is great going to try right now, I have hip that is bone on bone @The Whole Food Plant Based Cooking Show I don’t have pineapple or cherries right now but I really want to try so I went ahead and made it using blueberries and banana I figure the Tumerick and ginger alone will help even without the others will let you know
Are you having physical therapy or occupational therapy to restore the range of motion and muscle strength to your hand? Try to find a Certified Hand Therapist in your area for the best result. Hand function is very complex and best restored by a specialist. You are going to need the full use of your hand for many more years! Good luck and thanks for all you share.
mary albert
I am working with a woman that does Rolfing and she is wonderful. Thank you for your concern 😊
Do you Drink green tea
Rodney Putman
I don’t but that’s just because I don’t really like tea
Is there a substitution for pineapple Dear Lady? Howza 'bout Mango? CMJ
Charles Jensen
Sure, but the reason for using pineapple is for the anti inflammatory benefits.
When will you have more women's v-neck purple tshirts in stock?
janet macdonald
I don’t have control of the stock. Threadless is the company that makes the shirts, we just pay to have our design put on them 😊
