My favorite episode of The Lucy Show was when Lucy and Mr. Mooney got locked in the bank vault overnight.
They get so hungry, they eat dry, uncooked macaroni.
Anyone who has ever eaten dry macaroni, uncooked straight from the box knows that this is not a pleasant meal!
(Yes, I did this when I was a little boy. It is a memory that has stuck with me, needless to say!)

♥Life With Lucy was Lucille Balls final tv series which sadly didn't fair well in the ratings when it aired on ABC and was cancelled. 18 episodes were produced with only 13 airing and 5 unaired. The series was the only one from Lucille Ball not to air on CBS. Life With Lucy was released on DVD which does include the 5 unaired episodes! John Ritter did appear on Lucy's final sitcom and she appeared on The Best Of Three's Company tribute special a couple years earlier. Lucille Ball also passed the torch and gave her blessings to Bronson Pinchot and Mark-Linn Baker when Perfect Strangers premiered in mid-season 1986. 📺🛋📀📼

Mr..Gordon was a MAJOR star on Radio. He first worked with Lucille Ball on 1930s Radio, then again in "My favorite Husband", the radio program retooled into I Love Lucy. Gordon was the first choice to play Fred Mertz, but he was unavailable because of his role on "Our Miss Brooks"

Gale said on Merv Griffin once people would come up to him and say, "Why are you so mean to her, you meanie?" He really loved her and she loved him. They knew each other since 1939. Some people think these TV characters are real. Witness David Groh Rhoda's TV husband. When they divorced, he got death threats

Well, I am a huge fan of Gale Gordon. As for his views on 80s TV? He was born before both world wars, before silent films became talkies, and (ironically) before the Hays code was even a thing. So his views reflected a different time period.
Lucile Ball was only five years younger than him, but was more willing to embrace the changes that came with 80s TV. She’d already broken multiple boundaries by having a multiracial and multicultural sitcom succeed. And Lucy spoke so highly of John Ritter and Three’s Company.
I guess even in those days, the way the changes were viewed depended on who you asked.

I wasnt crazy about it when he replaced the original Mr. Wilson Joseph Kearns in Dennis the Menace but honestly re-watching those episodes where Dennis was clearly getting older, they kinda evolved the relationship between the two characters to a level that made sense, his Mr. Wilson wasnt as stern with Dennis than Kearns version which makes a little more sense as an older Dennis would know better.
That said. Mr. Gordon was phenominal as Lucy's "other" foil after Ethel/Vivian.

Speaking of Gale's radio career, he and Bea Benedaret were on a radio show called Ganbys Green Acres about an executive banker who moves to the country and becomes a farmer. The TV show is based on the radio version, and it was a spinoff of Beas show Petticoat Junction . They both did this show in 1949, shortly before Bea was on Burns and Allen and before Gale was on Our Miss Brooks

I met Mr. Gordon at an appearance in Seattle around 1970. Chad Everett from the new show "Medical Center" was also there and getting the bulk of the attention from the ladies especially. Mr. Gordon had TV history with me as I had seen him on numerous Lucy shows. I wanted and got HIS autograph (still have it). He was kind to me, a kid then, but even then I noticed he was a bit put off by all the attention Everett was getting.

    Hey Dave:
As always a very interesting presentation. Nice strong use of the as it happened in his own time article; it assisted me (as I'm sure it did for others as well) obtaining his own context of the changing and ever-changing television, entertainment landscape during his lifetime...
    Two side notes -
    (1) I appreciate your inclusion of the slow upward moving member acknowledgement crawl at the end of the presentation.
    (2) I noticed that even by presentations which have a members only designation under them; there is the option to "share" the presentation...
However, I don't "share" them when they have this designation; I wait to "share" the presentations until they no longer have the members designation; because I feel ("sharing") member presentations ultimately dilutes the heft & value of the membership itself for members and perspective members alike.
Dave, do you agree with my perspective on this admittedly small; however (I feel) quite important detail?

Question about that, though: if you happen to know somebody really loves a certain topic to which a Members-only subscription pertains, wouldn’t sharing it encourage the person to become a member? I’m only here, btw, because somebody gifted me my subscription because I just don’t have the financial wherewithal to buy member subscriptions. But, perhaps sharing a members only video would be the perfect way to advertise?

I have to disagree with him on Dukes of Hazzard. It was tastefully done. In fact, the pilot was the innuendo filled, because it was based on a filthy movie, but it cleaned up its act, once they realized their audience was so young. We're going to the Dukes museum on vacation.
Something you might consider is doing an episode of Radio inspired sitcoms. Gordon played the Husband in Granby's Green Acres, the inspiration for Green Acres, (the radio show is on UA-cam).

Gale was also very shrewd financially. He insisted on getting paid fully, upfront, whether Life With Lucy made it or not! So he got paid in full, regardless of the "finicky" public opinion of the show! Gale got the last laugh financially. And the way the show has been gobbled up in the DVD world, Lucy got the last laugh period!!

I always thought “The Lucy Show” was far superior to “I Love Lucy,” the latter depending on characters running around yelling and all wide-eyed all the time (I’m guessing a remnant of early TV, when actors and directors didn’t know whether/how characters would resonate through small TV screens, so they often went broad), and Gordon was a big reason. Frankly, Gordon not liking TV makes total sense. If he liked ‘80s TV, I’d thing something was wrong. I grew up on ‘70s, ‘80s, and some ‘90s TV, and I haven’t been impressed with anything in prime time since “Seinfeld” went off the air about a quarter century ago. Times, tastes, and trends change.

I think it’s a generational thing. A lot of people that worked in the industry when he did, did not like the way television was changing. My wife and I only use streaming services now, and the shows that we watch are full of F bombs. On network shows, why can you say bitch but you can’t say shit. It makes no sense. Ok that’s my two cents.
