Mary Ann, straight up. Bob was obviously a good man, who didn't leave his integrity behind when he became popular. Good for him for standing up to management. I was just coming of age as a kid in the mid-1960s, and have solid fond memories of watching the show with my family.
"The professor and Mary Anne" sounds so much better to me than "and the rest" and is the way remember the theme best. Kind of jarring if you find episodes with the older version of the song. Good on Bob for getting his costars recognition here
Based on air time, I suspect Professor Hinkley was the third most important character on the show; after Gilligan and Jonas. One of the most heart-warming things about the show was how much Alan Hale enthusiastically embraced being the lovable Skipper until the end of his life. What a corny, goofy, ridiculous, and brilliant series. 👏 ❤
Ever see "The Giant Spider Invasion?" Alan Hale did a bit part in this terrible dog of a sci-fi film, but he made sure to throw in a line saying "little buddy" at least once! I loved seeing him in anything!
Ives the commercial! Bob Denver sounds like a very kind and caring human being. Between Ginger and Maryann I’d have to go with Maryann. I really loved them all though. Thanks for sharing Dave!😊
I vote for Mary Ann especially now because as an older guy I want a woman who can make a pie. Plus I am a baptist and we tend to really enjoy our pie since we don't drink or smoke.
FUN FACT: The theme song we hear from Season One, that excludes the Professor and Mary Ann, isn't even the first theme song the show had. The original Gilligan's Island Pilot, which NEVER aired until TBS bought the rights and first aired it in 1992, didn't include Ginger, either. The only people given credit in either the song or the opener is Alan Hale, Jr. and Bob Denver. Jim Backus, and Natalie Schafer, although credited, were referred to as, "Mr. and Mrs. Millionaire" in the song. The rest were called "...and the other tourists", and did not receive any billing in the opener.
"neither borrower nor lender be, stay out of debt..." Yep, I REMEMBER that episode. My FAVORITE though was when the WWII Imperial Japanese minisub came into the lagoon and took them all prisoner. When I was a kid, there were STILL Japanese soldiers all around the Pacific refusing to lay down their arms until their old commanders ordered them to stand down.
Yes, Mary Ann hands down. Raquel Welch was supposed to play Ginger, but they felt she was too similar to Mary Ann and chose Tina. I would have just thrown a red wig on Raquel personally. Russell Johnson was more famous than Tina, so I don't know why they couldn't have added the professor to the song. I know the first episode had a different professor, Ginger, Mary Ann, and title song. I was lucky enough to see it. I liked both first episode Ginger and Mary Ann, but was glad they chose Russell.
This story about the opening credits has been known for quite awhile by us long time fans BUT it is always good to tell it again for those just learning the history of the show. Keep up the good work Dave.
It wasn’t just the theme song where those two were treated differently. Their credits as “co-stars” came in the end credits during the first season. This was a contractual thing where they weren’t considered “full” cast members. This was changed in season 2, where their billing was in the opening credits and their character names were included in the theme song. Their agents must have renegotiated their contracts. Along with higher billing comes a higher paycheck, so the producers were probably trying to keep costs as low as possible in season 1 by paying those two less than the others. If Bob Denver helped in getting them a promotion, as it were, then that’s being more of a hero than just having them including in the theme song.
the picture on tv guide cover of bob and tina at 2:00 actually had dawn wells in it too on bob's right side, but she was cropped out. talk about adding insult to injury!
In 1973, when NBC wanted to produce Star Trek The Animated Series, as a follow up to the original series, they wanted to cut corners and leave out some characters, notably Sulu (George Takei) and Uhura (Nichelle Nichols). Actor Leonard Nimoy (Spock) refused to perform his voice acting without these two characters. The studio was forced to go along with his wishes.

Good evening, Dave. After a rough, long day i know i can relax and get a smile from your videos, so thank you for that. I've always been a 'Mary Ann' devotee myself, although i wouldn't kick Ginger aside. Nice people are such a rarity in Hollywood today, and it's refreshing to hear of a star who was an authentic caring person. [There are some today-but hard to find.] Good for him taking a stand to include Dawn and Russell. Never did like the first season theme song. Interesting story..i used to hang out at a night club back in the 80's and one night i was helping this band unload their gear and set up, when i found out they used to be The Wellingtons!! [Can't remember what their new name was] Older of course, and a couple new members and they were harder rock, but it was them. Great bunch of guys! Hung out with them after their set and got to be friends. It was also The Wellingtons who played 'The Mosquitos' on one episode where a rock band comes to the island. Have a great day my friend and take care of yourself.
I remember seeing the series when it first aired and after a number of episodes, thinking they really short-changed the professor and Mary Ann. I also remember seeing the second season change to the opening song, and we all looked in surprise and then laughed together. We realized that other people thought it wasn't right either. When you realize there's only two on the island not mentioned, and you bother to say "and the rest," you might as well just give them their individual due. Thanks, Bob Denver, for all the years of light-hearted entertainment while maintaining a sense of fairness and generosity.
Cloris Leachman said her kids used to play with some of the Gilligan's Island props like the rafts when she was on the Mary Tyler Moore Show since both shows were filmed at Studio City. Those items were left over since the MTM Show was filmed after Gilligan's Island was canceled
In the original 1963 pilot, which had the original theme song, Ginger, who'd been demoted to secretary along with Bunny (not Mary Ann), only Gilligan, Skipper, and the Howells were in the opening. I imagine that Tina Louise's agent, who told here she'd be the star of GILLIGAN'S ISLAND, at least got her front billing. As far as redoing the opening goes, I suppose the only additional expense from adding Professor & Mary Ann to the theme song was from having it sung again, since the opening had to be refilmed for Season 2 anyway because it was going from B&W to color. 1:52 - According to Bob Denver, Dawn Wells was on the other side of him for the TV GUIDE May 8, 1965 cover, but someone cropped her out (only the edge of her pigtail appeared on the spine according to Denver), so only he & Tina L. ended up on the cover. 3:48 - I understand that while they didn't sing the GI theme song for S2 & 3, the Wellingtons did appear on the show in S2 episode "Don't Bug the Mosquitos" as the other Mosquitos with actor Les Brown, Jr. I prefer Mary Ann to Ginger myself. She's much more down-to-earth.
Thank you for doing this video. During the run of this show, our family TV was black&white. Until the TV movie about the castaways escaping the island, I did not know Gilligan’s shirt was red, and did not know Ginger’s hair was also red.

Dave, I don't know if you've seen the 2001 film "Surviving Gilligan's Island" which starred Bob Denver, Dawn Wells, and Russell Johnson with Dwayne Hickman. In the film, Bob, Dawn, and Russell tell stories of what happened behind the scenes, including the ones in this video. Tina wasn't the only one that hated the show at first, Natalie hated it too, but she changed her mind once she befriended the rest of the cast.

Mary Ann no doubt. She was a farm girl with common sense. This is this same reason I preferred Kate Jackson over Farrah Fawcett in Charlies Angels. I also enjoyed the celebrity commercial thanks for including it.
I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the commercial. I love putting those at the end of my videos. Kinda like getting the prize at the bottom of the cereal box.
one more example of his personality: he stated that had he known Schaefer’s age he wouldn’t have let her do so much in that horrific water…thwt story about him making them solve the water issue explains the swimming concerns
I laughed and laughed at the commercial. I checked the Internet for my local McDonald's prices. McDouble is now $2.79 in my area. Apparently higher in other places. Thanks for adding that. I loved Bob.
I'm glad you enjoyed the commercial. Helpful McDonald's hint, use the app. There's always some sort of deal for the Double Cheeseburger (which is superior to the McDouble because of the bonus slice of cheese).
@@jdsundstrom Yeah apps are the way to go. I usually go to Burger King anymore cause they're just 3 blocks from my house and Mickey D's is 4 miles. But specials on the app are the way to go. I'll have to check out Mickey D's; haven't been for ever. Love your videos. Keep them coming Dave.
Born in the early 60's, Gilligan's Island was, of course, a staple tv show in our house, beloved by both our parents and we children. I aspired to be Dawn, and over the years, had a childhood crush on Bob (due to his goofiness,) compared Alan to my favorite uncle, and later in life, had an adult crush on Russ (his comedic timing as the "straight man" was spot-on!) The commercial at the end was wonderful- so many faces from my childhood viewing!
There was something about Bob's goodness that resonated on the screen. I heard a story that Tina Louise took the role of Ginger because she was led to believe the show centered around her character (despite the name of the show). But yeah, Mary Ann. I prefer that character.
I've heard conflicting things about that. Tina Louise and Sherwood Schwartz did not get along, so Schwartz may have invented that story after Louise refused to return for the reunion movies. I heard the disagreement was about the royalties on reruns of the TV show. Apparently the stars of the show did not get a cent for the decades and decades of reruns, and she wanted a cut of that money before she'd agree to appear in a reunion.
My Dad is 71 and remembers this story from the 60s, as it was a big deal at the time. He told me all about it when he introduced me to the show in the late 80s.
Although Bob went to bat for Dawn and Russell, Dawn didn't find out until 30 years later why it was changed from the 'rest' to the professer and Mary Ann when she appeared on a talk show with Katie Couric. Bob was also on that talk show and he then explained to Katie he was the reason it was changed from the 'rest'. I believe that clip is on UA-cam
Mary Ann was my type. I couldn't have been able to afford Ginger. But I also had a desire to have cocktails with the Howells. Thurston was a hoot to hang with. But my favorite character has always been Lovey. She's one of the few "upper crust of society grand dames" that I could ever be fond of. Her flightiness kept me howling. She had the greatest wardrobe and fashion sense ever. And she was always pondering "What does one wear to a..?" 😊
I thought that the reason they said ."...and the rest" was because of the cast changes from the original pilot hadn't been settled yet but they had to complete the song. Then they fixed it when they went to the second season. That's the way I've always understood it to have happened.
Tina Louise couldn't compare to Dawn Wells in the beauty department. Dawn was one of the few women who could manage to be endearingly sweet and super sexy at the same time. And an 89 cent burger at McDonald's? Those days are so far gone!
Bob was a class act and I'd have to go with Mary Ann, Mary Ann, Mary Ann to qoute the Professor and could you imagine going through life as And The Rest. Great video Dave
Russel Johnson was in “This Island Earth”. When that movie was riffed on by MST3K The Movie, when Johnson first appeared in the movie, Mike Nelson said, “What’s this ‘And the rest’ crap?”
Mary Ann will always be my favorite because she carried herself in a very humble way! Puberty may have pushed me to like Ginger but when reality checks in in the morning Mary Ann will always stand out!❤️ Bob Denver was a real stand-up guy !
As a little kid I had a crush on Ginger, I've always loved redheads. As I got older I developed a crush on Mary Ann. I still prefer redheads in general, but between these two characters it's been Mary Ann far longer than it was Ginger.
I seem to remember reading that the "and the rest" was because of Tina Louise' contract, which stated she either had to be the first credit, or the last. I recall that she went to Sherwood Schwartz (spelling?) and let that part of the contract go, so Dawn and Russell would be named as equal cast members. Another factoid, apparently none of the cast members got residuals. It just wasn't a thing back then because no one foresaw the massive syndication options that came to be soon after the show ended. So all these actors got nothing from those years of reruns.
So ironic Tina was given the initial limelight as it turns out she was the most resentful about being typecast as Ginger..She was the only one to not return to the reunion movies..
Eighty-nine cents for a McDouble? Wow, I'm.... Another great video, Dave - when I first started watching "Gilligan's Island", it was in reruns, color, and the lyrics included "the Professor and Mary Ann", so I didn't know that it wasn't always like that. Thanks to Mr. Denver for looking out for his fellow "castaways".
Bob Denver was the real deal, a genuinely good man. Unfortunately for so many in Hollywierd today it is all about appearing virtuous not being virtuous.
@@jdsundstrom Modern advertisers should learn from the past. I can't remember ads that I saw yesterday but I can recall ads from decades ago as if I saw them as if they rolled only moments ago.
I went back and watched the dueling theme songs (I remember both). Wow the show isn't the same without that UHF static! As a kid I loved the slapstick quality of the show and all the characters were well cast and interesting. Definitely team Mary Ann for me. Probably good it only lasted 3 years, enough to syndicate but avoid the problems of running out of ideas.
That was so disrespectful, referring to Mary Ann & the Professor as "the rest" in the first season's opening theme song and I remember reading a long time ago, about Bob Denver fuming at the producers about "the rest" lyric and demanded it be changed (and it was), that right there, is a loyal friend and true and why they all remained close with each other (all except Tina Louise) since the show originally and abruptly ended (Plus, I remember Dawn Wells saying that when she and Russell Johnson would write each other, they'd always finish them off with "The Rest"....)
I'm glad Gilligan went to bat for Ginger and The Professor, and got them bumped up to the opening credits, plus the opening theme song was changed for the second and third seasons.
After retiring, Bob and his wife moved to the same county where I live in WV. He and his wife were beloved here and were involved in charities here. He also has a local radio station, now owned and operated by the Bob Denver Foundation, called Little Buddy Radio. 100% of the proceeds generated by sponsorship go into the Foundation to help families dealing with special needs, especially Autism. ❤
Mary Ann, Mary Ann, Mary Ann...🙂 Still in love with her to this day... Thanks for the memories!!!

@@jdsundstrom Exactly it was the cherry on top.
one more example of his personality: he stated that had he known Schaefer’s age he wouldn’t have let her do so much in that horrific water…thwt story about him making them solve the water issue explains the swimming concerns
All of the burgers at McDonald's have shrunk. The Big Macs are now the size of a cheeseburger 🍔.
Born in the early 60's, Gilligan's Island was, of course, a staple tv show in our house, beloved by both our parents and we children.
I aspired to be Dawn, and over the years, had a childhood crush on Bob (due to his goofiness,) compared Alan to my favorite uncle, and later in life, had an adult crush on Russ (his comedic timing as the "straight man" was spot-on!)
The commercial at the end was wonderful- so many faces from my childhood viewing!
Thanks for sharing your memories, Linda!
@@jdsundstrom Thank you for triggering so many memories!
As a kid, Mary Ann ❤❤
As an adult, Ginger 😍😘👊
That was awsome of Bob Denver. Thanks Dave 😊
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Thanks for sharing. Your dad sounds awesome. 🙂
Hmmm. I'll have to see if I can track that one down.
Mary Ann is still my favorite of the two. Thanks for the commercial at the end.
Glad you enjoyed it
Mary Ann was my type. And she was always pondering "What does one wear to a..?" 😊
Mary Ann was my type as well. At least, most of the time. 😉
I thought that the reason they said ."...and the rest" was because of the cast changes from the original pilot hadn't been settled yet but they had to complete the song. Then they fixed it when they went to the second season.
That's the way I've always understood it to have happened.
Hmmm. It's possible that may have been the case when Sherwood composed the song.
Tina Louise couldn't compare to Dawn Wells in the beauty department. Dawn was one of the few women who could manage to be endearingly sweet and super sexy at the same time.
And an 89 cent burger at McDonald's? Those days are so far gone!
Use the app. I got a Double Cheeseburger for free the other day. 🙂
Thanks for the vintage ad.
Any time!
Bob was a class act and I'd have to go with Mary Ann, Mary Ann, Mary Ann to qoute the Professor and could you imagine going through life as And The Rest. Great video Dave
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. 🙂
I am so thrilled that Bob Denver went to bat for Russell Johnson and Dawn Wells.
I had always wondered about the change in the song.
Russel Johnson was in “This Island Earth”. When that movie was riffed on by MST3K The Movie, when Johnson first appeared in the movie, Mike Nelson said, “What’s this ‘And the rest’ crap?”
Love it!
Mary Ann will always be my favorite because she carried herself in a very humble way! Puberty may have pushed me to like Ginger but when reality checks in in the morning Mary Ann will always stand out!❤️ Bob Denver was a real stand-up guy !
Good stuff Dave! Thanks! Definitely Mary Ann! Take care,
The Professor was my favorite character.
As a little kid I had a crush on Ginger, I've always loved redheads. As I got older I developed a crush on Mary Ann. I still prefer redheads in general, but between these two characters it's been Mary Ann far longer than it was Ginger.
Thanks for sharing, JKJA!
@😊jdsundstrom
It is a real tragedy that Tina opted out of the movies.
and now she the remaining last one alive
Eighty-nine cents for a McDouble? Wow, I'm....
Another great video, Dave - when I first started watching "Gilligan's Island", it was in reruns, color, and the lyrics included "the Professor and Mary Ann", so I didn't know that it wasn't always like that. Thanks to Mr. Denver for looking out for his fellow "castaways".
Thanks for the comment, Lateef!
The lyrics "The Professor and Mary Ann" sounds a lot better than "and the rest" so the change was definitely for the better.
I agree. It sounds WAY better!
Usually it was the professor who with the help of the Skipper who tried to get the castaways rescued.
Bob Denver was the real deal, a genuinely good man. Unfortunately for so many in Hollywierd today it is all about appearing virtuous not being virtuous.
I finally found an advertisement on UA-cam that I could appreciate! Of course, it would be the one at the end of the video. :)
Ha! Those old TV ads were so much more entertaining. 🙂
@@jdsundstrom Modern advertisers should learn from the past. I can't remember ads that I saw yesterday but I can recall ads from decades ago as if I saw them as if they rolled only moments ago.
Totally agree.
Thanks Dave.
You're most welcome, William!
I remember that commercial...
I can’t believe it was only 3 seasons! I thought it was on much longer
Thanks for sharing your memories!
That was so disrespectful, referring to Mary Ann & the Professor as "the rest" in the first season's opening theme song and I remember reading a long time ago, about Bob Denver fuming at the producers about "the rest" lyric and demanded it be changed (and it was), that right there, is a loyal friend and true and why they all remained close with each other (all except Tina Louise) since the show originally and abruptly ended
(Plus, I remember Dawn Wells saying that when she and Russell Johnson would write each other, they'd always finish them off with "The Rest"....)
Love it! Thanks for sharing.
And that commercial was awesome!
Glad you liked it!
Too bad Hollywood didn't recognize true beauty and put Dawn Wells and put her magazine covers
I'm glad Gilligan went to bat for Ginger and The Professor, and got them bumped up to the opening credits, plus the opening theme song was changed for the second and third seasons.
U mean he went to bat for Mary Ann
I'll take a Mary Ann in the streets and a Ginger between the sheets 😁. My favourites Bob Denver story is the TV guide one.
Love it! Thanks for sharing.
@@jdsundstrom you're welcome!
Ginger or Mary-ann? Not a problem, I choose Jeannie (Barbara Eden) 😍😍
Another good choice!
