I was fortunate to get to see Bird, McHale, Magic, Jordan, Jabbar, Stockton, etc. in the 80's & 90's. probably the greatest era in the NBA.
I quit watching NBA after them. Everything just seemed cheaper and less talent but more trash talking and not backing it up.

Long ago whilst in the Navy the San Fransico B ball team were hosting Boston and I got a ticket to go to the game. When I arrived, there was Lary Bird warming up and he saw me in my dress blues. He walked up to me and stood a foot taller than I smiled and shook my hand and said we're gonna have fun today just you watch! They creamed them. Wonderful memories.

Larry Bird, and Joe Montana FORCED ME to understand that TALENT IS TALENT! There were more players that also ended my racist mentality, but those two men taught this young man to SIMPLY APPRECIATE EVERY SINGLE TIME THAT I HAD A CHANCE TO ENJOY THEIR SPORTS PROWESS! Just like eras before and after. The era that makes anyone a fanatic stands out most to them. BUT! The 80's was and still is one of the best eras in sports!

record that night about a week after McHale had just set it. The Atlanta bench could not believe the talent they were witnessing.
I never can get enough of Bird highlights. I was blessed to watch him in his heyday. There is no one who plays his cerebral game.

I've seen interviews where some of the biggest players of the time admitted to having nightmares about guarding Bird. As much as 2 weeks before a game. I sure wish I could find that video again...

Been a family friend of Larry for 40 years. Outside at cookout 6 years ago. A very intoxicated “friend” running that mouth said to Legend that he probably bullied his way into his wins. I sat there and saw everything happen. Larry humbly (because his family was there) said….. can’t quote because I will not be 100% ….. if I hit 10 in a row from any place within half court, you leave without a word.
Drunk “ass” called out the spots and LEGEND hit all 10! The 11th was facing opposite direction and he shot over his head BACKWARDS maybe 18” inside the 3 point line. I sat there and saw Larry hit 11 in a row all over the court (none past the half court line). 6 YEARS AGO! Drunk boy apologized and he was forgiven as Larry took a seat, crossed his legs and simply chuckled. I’ll never forget that day!
There are a lot of loud mouths these days that need a lesson like that - and the sad thing for those people is that he can probably still do it.
Who gives a sh*t what Larry Bird looked like. He had a gorgeous, smooth outside shot and his runners and fade aways were divine.

I have been a Celtics fan for many years. My favorite Bird moment was him hitting what would’ve been the game winning shot, but K.C. called a timeout. Bird went back to the same spot and hit the game winner as time expired.

I was in my 30's and 40's when Bird played, from what I can remember he was a colorful guy that could back his trash talking with points. For me Bird is the NBA King.

....magic battled Mr. French lick for the NCAA championship title....I'm so happy I was able to witness these two "artists" battle later on in the NBA on rival teams, several times, Lakers/Celtics for the NBA champion title!
It says it all when the top players from during Bird's time as a player, all have stories about Larry and how good he was. Funny when he would tell the defender the shot he was going to take and still hit the shot. I remember the story where is was the final seconds of the game and the coach was drawing up the play and Larry just said "give me the ball and everyone get out of the way". He hit the shot and won the game. lol. If I was starting a team and I could pick from any player in his prime, my first pick would be Larry Bird. His heart, determination, his high basketball IQ, his desire to win, along with his shooting and his passing would make him my first pick.
Kevin mchale is One of the MOST underrated Nba players of all time. Period. Hes top 40-50 hands down. And top 5 PF all time

I was 22 living just south of Boston when Larry joined the Celtics. I was such a Celtics fan growing up that owned a Celtics green leisure suit. Many great years as a fan, but 85-86 when Bill Walton joined them was so much fun to watch. Always wanted to see him wearing the green, he was so happy and Bird, Parish, Kevin, DJ and Danny were clearly glad to have him on the team. Don’t know if people appreciated how much Larry’s teammates had to have their heads on a swivel when he was on the floor. Charles talking about Larry feeling disrespected because there was a white guy guarding him is my favorite story, BTW.
i was home on leave in 81 and met the sixers at logan after the playoff game, steve mix was in the bar and i was standing next to doc when the local tv interviewed him, daryl dawkins was humoungous!
I could only dream of meeting Lary Bird sucks I will not be here much longer I can't even try to start my bucket list but no matter what I would not change a thing even tho beening over seas and exposed to some bad stuff that's attacking my body. I would do it all over again and change nothing. Lary Bird played his heart out he knows war on a different level to what I know. Believe me being a ball player in the NBA is as rough as being a player on team army. So thank you Mr Bird you gave me a way to decompress after a bad day and for that I will be forever grateful .

I’d like to preface this by saying that I played basketball in NYC in an all black high school and got my nick name from the brothers playing at The Cage and at Rucker Park. We were all trying to emulate what Larry bird was doing on the playground and it was impossible for us. However, I remember hearing what Pat Riley said, “If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save a game, I’d choose Michael Jordan, but if I had to choose a player to take a shot to save my life, I’d take Larry Bird."
That's exactly what Isiah Thomas said. That at the time every black player tried to shoot like Bird but no one could do it. Well it took another generation of players to finally do it, Ray Allen, who modeled his jumper after Bird's. Both jumpers are a thing of beauty.

Great point! It cracks me up when I hear people saying he lacked "athleticism" also. He made some unbelievably acrobatic moves, passing balls to teammates through crowds in ways that almost nobody else could have done.... not to mention some extremely athletic drives to the basket for layups. The way he would tap or slap passes to teammates without ever catching the ball, with great accuracy, is pretty damned athletic also in my book!!!
A true legend. I grew up during this era, and there were many stars at that time, unlike any other era, and the bird was my favorite. Thanks for the memories, Larry!
I was a decent juco player, 6'-6" White guy who couldn't jump but still scored, boxed out, rebound put-backs, just basic stuff that leads to wins.
Had I been better, I might have been entering the league about the same time as Bird.
But since I wasn't, Bird became my muse. I moved to Indiana in '79, the year of his famous NCAA March Madness championship game against Magic. After that, I followed him from his rookie year until retirement, living my own failed dreams through his exploits.
Bird represented everything that was good about roundball, and the trash talk made me love everything that was bad. He backed it up in a MONSTER way, a way that caused the most frustration to the other teams. NOBODY got inside the heads of other players like The Birdman.

I saw Larry play in the old Hemisfair Arena in San Antonio in the late 80’s, what a show. He threw up a 30 something point triple double while never stepping on the court in the 4th quarter. Forever my favorite player.

There were some new stories in here that I had never heard, and I have heard many. As a born-and-bred Hoosier (Indiana University '76) I thought I had heard them all. There are many reasons Larry was destined to be a legend. First, he came from Indiana, where it is every little boy's dream to become a basketball star, so much so that there are basketball hoops in every suburban driveway, on every barn, in every park in urban areas, and in every low-income housing apartment complex. One thing all Hoosiers share, whether you grew up on a farm or in a big city, is the love of basketball. Second, he was recruited by Bob Knight and would have been a junior on that 1976 Indiana Hoosier team (my senior year) that was the last to complete a season undefeated and win the NCAA championship, had he not been embarrassed and shamed into dropping out of school before practice could even begin by Kent Benson. Third, he could flat-out ball. Fourth, he took every team he was ever on and made everyone on the team better. I'm now 70 years old, and by the time I was growing up in Indiana, the only two teams that anyone paid attention to in respect to having a chance to go far in the NCAA Tournament were Indiana, and their arch-rival Purdue. Nobody paid much attention to Butler, Notre Dame or Indiana State. Bird took Indiana State to that undefeated season and damn near won the championship. He did the same thing with the Celtics when he got there. He did the same thing as coach of the Pacers. After Bird, I haven't had as much fun watching basketball until Steph Curry came around and started to do impossible things on the court like Bird used to do. Can you imagine the two of them playing on the same team in their prime? Anyway, great video. Thanks for posting it.

I was in law school at Drake in the late 70s, and Bird and IN state came to Des M. Drake had Lewis Lloyd, who could flat play so I knew I was going to see the shit. They did this thing to intimidate the opponent in warm ups where at about one minute left before the start, Legend shot by himself and the rest of the team stood under the net. He started the game with a miss and we all chant, who's Larry Bird, misses his first seven and we kept getting louder after each miss. I said to my two buddies, pretty soon he will go off on us. He only missed about once the rest of the game and put up 47. I knew that chant would come back to haunt us but I saw what I came to see.
Thank you Red for the greatest basketball player ever to play the game and bringing him to Boston. I have always been a Celtic fan and was there at the creation. I know how great he was.😅😅

Great video! My favorite Bird story took place in a road game against the Seattle Supersonics. Bird has the ball at the end of the game, and says to Xavier McDaniel, "I'm gonna get the ball right here and shoot a jumper in your face". McDaniel says, "I'll be waiting for you". Sure enough, Bird gets the ball and hits the shot right in McDaniel's face! The Celtics win the game! BIrd says to McDaniel after the shot went in, "I didn't mean to leave 2 seconds on the clock"!!
The great thing about these videos are the fact that these are the other players telling the stories.
There was one I remember magic telling the Celtics visited the Lakers and Bird saw Magic was injured and he told Magic just sit back and relax I'm going to put a show on for you.

The one that's becoming my favorite is the Eddie Johnson story about Bird shooting the air ball. The fact Larry threw up an air ball to make his point to a rook is hilarious. lmao.
I suspect that he had a different followup line for when he made those. It's pretty incredible that he figured out how to make even an airball intimidating.

Larry was a master of playing head games!! My favorite Bird story was when he shot the game left handed. Near the end of the game, he went back to his right hand. he talked the talk AND he walked the walk!! Many people can talk but they cannot back it up!!

THE Best. I'm from Portland, Oregon and a Trailblazer fan and went to many games. When Boston came to town I couldn't help for cheering for Bird, as many Blazer fans did. Watching a Legend was unbelievable.

Todays players, while physically very gifted, would get destroyed by Larry.
Kevin McHale did not enter the starting line-up until the 185-1986 season - the third championship. McHale played behind Cedric Maxwell - the playoff MVP during the 1981 Celtic championship run. Bird was the reason the Celtics dominated the 80s. McHale was a highly talented role player, but was a role player.

My favourite, especially in light of his recent comments about Larry, is what he did to Rodman one game after he ran his mouth to the media along the lines of...if Larry was black, he'd just be an average player.
Bird didn't just cook Rodman, he fucking destroyed him. While Rodman is literally standing on Larry holding his shirt, Larry is screaming at his teammates he's open, to pass him the ball before they realise no one is guarding me. Then while Rodman is still glued to him, Bird starts yelling at the Pistons bench...hey Chuck (Detroit head coach) isn't anyone going to guard me? You better get someone to guard me or I'm going to go for 60.

A man is known by his enemies- born, raised and lived in LA throughout the Magic 80’s. We knew Bird better than ANYBODY. For an entire decade this man shook us - and we hated him for it. Slow, awkward and we STILL couldn’t stop him.l! We got em 2-1 in the ‘Ship- but THAT Kat was a terror.

My favorite story of Bird was when he played against the Hawks and he had the whole Hawks bench in laughter and awe from hitting one circus shot after another
That was his 60 point game when Boston played the Hawks in New Orleans. The funny part is when Mike Fratello fined his players for their reactions to Bird's game - and made them watch the video of their reactions over & over. 😂

The 10 3s in a row as the coach or GM at Indiana is probably a top 5 Bird moment. Like the steal v Detroit in game 5, or 27 points left handed through 3 quarters in Portland, or 1 steal short of a quadruple double through 3 quarters.
