I love your US military story, brother! I am too a mid 30s, unmarried no dependents US military NPS uniformed member. I joined the US Air Force at 34, turned 35 during basic, which I didn't divulge, but I graduated on time and currently in technical training. I'm a reservist, because I have a great city government job that I was recently hired for. They are veteran friendly, given that we are in a Navy and Marine Corps city, and paid me while I was in basic training.

Where are you taking basic? I was 25 when I went to Ft. Jackson. Most of my platoon were teenagers. I had a friend that was 38 that went the 2nd time following college and did quite well. Let us hear from you sometime after basic training or your AIT. Good luck to you!

I’m 34 and getting into really good shape. Hard to explain, but long COVID wrecked my health last couple years - according to tests, doctors can’t find what’s wrong. All better now, what’s chances you think with a 34 year old? Think it’s worth a shot?

Yea maybe try marine reserves instead of active duty

IMO, go air force! I went in the army rather late, and it was all that I could handle. However, it's your life. If it's something you truly want, go for it! If you don't mind, let us know what happens. Good luck to you!

@ How old were you when you went in and did you need an age waiver? Was it during the years the age limit was raised to 42?

@@NomadWalker990 I was nearly 26, and I was never athletic. Frankly, I was a 140-pound weakling. The oldest guy in our platoon was 30. Most of our platoon were teenagers, early 20's, and both of us kept up with these kids. I had a buddy that took basic at Ft. Jackson in 2001, and he was 38! He was prior service, so it was his 2nd time in basic, and he made it through, no problem! If you're determined, you can do it, my friend! And yes, it's worth it!! There's no feeling like it when you graduate as a soldier!

Two kids and a wife you can't go active. You have to go reserve because you simply just don't make enough to support 3 dependents and the Marine Corps knows this.

Appreciate the information. I was deterred from the Marine Corps when I read the age limit but now I'm thinking I have a chance at 34. What do you think? Prior LE experience on resume, physically fit, I'd have to train a little more to make that 3 mile in 17 but it's possible, I have a non violent misdemeanor though. I still could have a chance.

17 minutes 3 mile is the Max time, meaning the best score possible. If you can run it under 28 minutes, you pass. 35 is the cutoff age you can be for age waiver, so if you want this, you better act fast since you are 34.

@@ReprintYGODid the 2 hour afqt practice test at a recruitment office and scored 67. I was told to wait for a call from an OCS recruit in a different location. Never received so I called the recruitment office in the other location and that recruiter said he hadn't heard anything from my original recruiter about me. I answered the same questions and he said to expect a call from the OCS recruiter on a specified day.

@@ReprintYGO I was going to enlist but when asked about my college credits the local recruiter's suggested commissioned as an officer. It's not really clear except that the local recruiter said if I choose enlisted I'd be working with him. Are you enlisted or commissioned?

Good luck. Boot camp is only the beginning of your challenges. The Marines are geared for rowdy teenagers. You will be micromanaged by angry twenty- somethings. I love the Marines, but I joined at 17. The Army is a better fit for O.G.'s.
