2018 Mazda3 GT Hatch - Aged To Perfection

  • With so much new competition, you'd think that Mazda's current Mazda3 would be facing an uphill battle. Thankfully, Mazda has figured out how to design a competitive small car for the future and despite new competitors, the current 3 still holds its own in the crowded compact car segment. We are very much looking forward to the new version, but if you can't wait anymore, the 2018 model is still worth a look.

While some may argue that the competitors’ look sportier, more modern, newer, etc., the beauty of the Mazda 3 is that its design balances sporty and elegance so well, that I’m sure it’ll age really well versus the others.

I have a 2014 model year (bought in 2013) mazda6 that has the same front styling. In over 4 years I haven't had any issues with it. Prior to that I had a 2006 mazda6 which had no reliability issues. My experience has been that mazda makes highly reliable cars with great styling, high quality interiors and for not as much money as I'd expect for the trim levels.

I've had my Snowflake White 3 Grand Touring hatch (with a manual) for about two months now and I love it. Just the way it grips when you toss it into a corner is beyond compare. I let my sister's boyfriend, a former cup champion, drive the car and he got it to do things I didn't know were possible. Mazda has designed an amazing car, an almost timeless design. I hope mine gives me many many years of reliable service.

the best compliment I've had with my white 1 1/2 year old 2017 gt hatch was today. Our department moved into another area of the property just last Friday and of course, we now had to parking into a new parking lot . My new co-workers were asking whose white lexus was that outside? they've seen it the last few days and was going to tow it because they didn't know who it belonged to and was unauthorized...after hearing more bits of info as they spoke, I came to find out they were talking about MY car....I said I have a Mazda, and they did not believe me...to the point that they all had to go outside to confirm it is a mazda and not a lexus...Hmmmm, i feel proud but also feel sad that geez, no one knows what a mazda 3 looks like !

The horsepower is impressive for the segment. I was trying to choose between the 2018 Mazda 3 GT, 2019 Corolla Hatchback XSE, and 2019 Kia Forte EX. I ultimately leased the Kia because the monthly payments were closest to my budget, but I chose to lease over buy so in three years, I can get Mazda 3. I'm super excited for remodel this year, especially they're upcoming mild hybrid system, but I feel like it'll have a lot initial growing pains. In three years, they should have all the kinks worked out. Although, I fell in love with the CX-5, too. Three years from now I have some decisions to make. Lol.

I got mine in March 2018 and it has been such a pleasure. Yes the rear seats are cramped and infotainment is weird but if you want a car that still has actual steering feel(in this category of course) there is no need to think twice. One point that I think that was missed in this review was the built quality of impact bars and the metal sheet used in general is actually much better than the other Japanese counterparts.

That's it !! No need to go back and forth through the menus and than say it's cumbersome. But in your defense I think most people don't know about this, including the dealer that presented the car to me and was complaining about this thing. I do think it (still) stands out with the looks, hatch or sedan body style option, interior quality, availability of manual in top trim level and if you must get an auto, no cvt. Additionally, the big N/A engine should offer excellent reliability and know the mpg in the real world are excellent. The rear seat and general overall space pushed me to get a Mazda6, but I really enjoyed my '18 test drive of a M3 in GT form with the 6spd manual and wish more people would give it a spin. Awesome review!

Amen to that! I adore the fact that Mazda still offer a manual transmission on the Mazda3's highest Grand Touring trim. I'm tired of having to pick the base (or slightly above) trim level if I want to get a manual.
I'd totally get a Civic or Accord if Honda offered either car with a manual on their highest trim levels. But they don't.

Good luck finding a GT with manual, its even rare to find a base sport model with manual on dealer lots. Dealerships generally won't order any that way, or maybe one or two for the entire model year since they want most of the stock to sell quickly. Of course you can do a factory order, (dealers with a lot of lot stock would much rather sell those) but going that route makes it much more difficult to negotiate price..you can't play various dealerships against each other.

I just purchased a new 2018 Mazda 3 Touring with the 2.5 L and I can say it is the best car I've ever owned. I loved my 2014 Ford Fiesta hatch, but because of recurring transmission problems (I had the one with the PowerSh*t Dual-Clutch Transmission), I had to get rid of it as soon as I could.
ALSO, if you have a 2018 Mazda without Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, you can go to your Mazda dealership to have it added on at no-cost for a limited time. I had them add it before I drove off the lot.

I still really enjoy driving 2006 manual Mazda3. 110k miles, no issues. It is fun to drive. I am shopping for a new car to replace it as my daily driver but haven't been seriously tempted by anything yet. I have the 2.0L engine and would probably buy the 2.5L next but not because I need it! I am old school and I am not in favor of all the new stuff like turbo motors, CVT transmissions, auto hill brake, lane departure, cylinder deactivation or auto start/stop.

The “wasted real estate” on the gauge cluster really does look a bit awkward. I think the lower trim gauge cluster with the center speedo and a small tachometer looks more balanced. (Despite that the center tach itself looks way cooler).

"I don't get the massive tachometer this is not a Porsche."
Although I agree the side panels can use a redesign, I think more cars should have a center tachometer! It contributes to a more exciting/engaging driving experience, which is what Mazda is known for. No need to be a Porsche. I'm already frustrated Mazda only gives you the center tach on the upper trims.

bey0ndd (2017 M3 Sport) Impressive, by my standards. I understand the the 2017 models received noise dampening and suspension updates. At engine idle, a friend told me they thought my car was a hybrid. I can comfortably listen to the radio at about 1/3 volume at 75mph on the highway. The suspension seems very balanced, and the car just goes where you steer it without complaint.

Question: When trying to decide, I got insurance quotes for all 3 vehicles. The Mazda 3 would have made my insurance go up about $30 a month! Do you have any idea why? Are the cost for repairs more? Initially, I thought it was the higher horsepower; however, the Corolla Hatchback, which would have increased my insurance the least, has 20hp higher than the Kia.

  • @jamesbrosius5006
    @jamesbrosius5006 6 років тому +6

I'm honestly sure Mazda made the 3 for single drivers at this point. That's why the back seats are more cramped. It's still roomy, and I have a 2014 I GT hatch, and I'm literally the only one really in the car and it's great for my architecture projects that I have to haul around and not damage. Honestly this car is really aimed at young couples and individuals and small families with one child or so. I know a family at my credit union who owns a 3 hatch in red and they say it's perfect. Honestly to each it's own, but I'm sure Mazda made sure this categorized to certain buyers.
Anyways, it's still the fastest NATURALLY ASPIRATED in it's class since everyone else has turbos. Atleast Mazda can have that pedigree. The sports car feel is to connect you to the road. Not the infotainment system. It only took a week to get me used to it and I'm glad I don't have all that car play or auto crap. The new Malibu I had to rent had it and it confused the hell out of me and I played with it for a couple hours and it eventually ran out of data and it was using someone else's phone from Ohio and I'm in Michigan so yeah at that point, there's no point. I think I'd be happier if Android auto and apple car play are an add on for the next 3 and any trim can get it just as a package like the technology package. Anyways I love watching your reviews and I just wanted to spew my little shpew on this. Thank you.

    • @jbm0866

You're looking at a $6k difference in price there, likely more in reality since VW dealers are notoriously hard to haggle with. In any case, I have a '16 GTI SE, but have driven a '16 Mazda 3 GT. The GTI is on a different level performance wise (and price as well) but all things considered the Mazda is by no means a bad choice for the price. You could do worse than a Mazda 3 GT with a slick manual...which I think is better than VW's stick and not far behind Honda's, or at least how Honda manuals used to be.

I just took a test drive at the local dealer and I can tell you it's pretty much like driving my current Hyundai Elantra. I just found a few things I didn't like about Mazda. Switching from Trip A to Trip B and back to total miles is controlled by a cheap looking skinny plastic knob, almost a size of a toothpick. Has any Mazda owner broke it yet?
Also, all those buttons in horizontal position placed next to a coffee cup, that's just a diseaster waiting ahead. Any feedback on that from Mazda owners? I have a chance to get 2018 Mazda GT hatch with 3000 miles, for $17 000 OTD, is this a good deal?

Just a nice little update on Android auto and apple car play, all 2018 models have them now, they came out August I think it was, and you can get yours installed into older models if I'm right if you just talk to the dealer you got it from
