- Everyone is talking about these Soundwave ukuleles... So much so, I nearly didn't make a video but I am glad I did, it's nice to just noodle with some effects every now and again.

Stairway, DENIED!
Thank you for a another great review, Alex.
Just a quick update. The power light went amber today (after 9 days) indicating low battery, I continued to play for about another hour after that. Overall I estimate I played for around 12 to 14 hours. Charging has taken 7 hours using a 2 amp phone charger. I thought it useful to know the recharge time so as not to get caught out with a flat battery mid gig :)
Thanks. Stay safe and keep well.
Great video Alex!
Thanks! This was really helpful x
Those seem pretty fun! Thanks Alex. Take good care!
You too.
I'm looking to upgrade my uku, and I love flight instruments. It's between the Sophia or Diana, and your video has been a great help! Cheers
Glad it was helpful!
I am such a fan of your reviews. I have purchased a Flight Diana.
Hi Valerie! Now that you have had your Flight Diana for a good while- how do you like it? Would you recommend it? Any issues? Thanks!
I have Uke Diana and now I'm tempted to buy Sophia as well haha
Am chuffed to pieces with the Flight Victoria Tenor CE I bought from SUS. LOVELY instrument.
Have looked to see if they sell any Flight baritone ukes but they don't seem to - either that or they all sold out.
Glad you like the Victoria! No, I haven't seen any baritones either and no £200+ Sopranos
Love the cameraman wave at 5.20
Cool. at 9:40 I thought we were about to get a rendition of Simply having a wonderful Christmas time by Paul McCartney
Haha I thought the same thing as I played the chord!
I'm just curious. I have about a dozen ukuleles and the Flight Diana is the only one with a radius saddle with a non-radius fretboard. Any idea why that is?
You asked for video ideas... I am a left handed player and as such always appreciate videos surrounding the topic of Left handed uke's/baritone's reviews, beginner lessons, strategies etc...
Thanks for the feedback.
I put more lefty specific stuff on my own channel Ukes with Alex
I have two Enya Concerts with a similar system one arrived with the transducer in two halves and the replacement is unplayable because of feedback. If flight produce a concert at some point I would suspect it would exhibit the same problem . In my opinion ( and I've had more experience with sound equipment over the years than Ukes ) you need a bigger box and this is borne out by the fact that Guitars fitted with this type of unit don't have the feedback problem. You have no doubt worked out that there is not a complete speaker inside but just the transducer. The back provides the pseudo speaker cone in the same way that those little devices that turn a table top or a plate glass shower screen into a speaker. Mind you the flights sound really good. I'm guessing also that if you put it through an amp you cut the internal transducer out of the circuit by the action of inserting a Jack lead and thus will not experience the feedback problem. Just think what it would be like if you had a Baritone with that rig in it 🙂
Diana is a Concert
The Diana sound wave concert came after the Tenor... this comment was relevant at the time.
Hi, I just came across this review. I've been waiting for someone to get the Diana back in stock for a few months. I actually didn't realize there was another with the Soundwave technology. Do you recommend one over the other?
Personally if you are not that fussed by the internal speaker and effects then I would save your money and get the standard Diana TE. We have them in stock. 👍
Ooooh I’m smitten with the new technology. I already have a few other ukus so I would only buy another one if it offered something quite different. My untrained ear just doesn’t appreciate THAT much sound difference between the two models so was curious if there was one that you thought was better. 😊
I took delivery of my Diana Soundwave on Wednesday. Freemont Low G fitted. I've barely put it down since. Brilliant Uke, absolutely loving every minute of it. Do you have any idea how long the battery lasts, and how long it takes to charge?
No, you've had yours longer than we have 😅
@@SouthernUkuleleStore I'll let you know then :)
Does is sound good through an amp ?
@@deniseshaw3871 You can play it using the built in effects and the amp clean, or turn off the effects (just use the volume control) and use whatever effects on pedals or on the amp. Effectively, you can make it sound any way you want.
@@georgejohnson7591 Im tempted its beautiful !!
Am I correct in thinking that the battery is charged via USB, and if so do these ukes come with a charger.
Great job as usual.
Yes and yes. Sorry I didn't mention this in the video.
Thank you 😀
Could you tell me why the Fireball is more expensive than the sound wave ukes please , I'm trying to make my mind up on what to buy, I love the look of the fireball but the transacoustic is appealing
The Soundwave Ukes are laminate back and sides instruments with a £100 pickup inserted. The Fireball is made of more premium woods, to a higher standard and has a completely different feel and tone to the Diana and Sophia models... I honestly think the sound samples of these instruments and our video on the Fireball tell that story quite well.
I just noticed that you played it or are left handed! I might be confused or wrong? What was it like to set it up left handed? At 9:17 you swapped it from right to left, am I right? How does that work? I am lefted handed so I am very curious 👀
I don't switch the strings I just play them however I need to
I see that they now sell the flight victoria in the soundwave range as well. But is seems to have the same specs as the Sophia. Any idea which is better? The Victoria is a bit more expensive
The wood specs are indeed similar but the satin finish and the scoop cutaway on the Victoria are what make it different. The sound of the Sophia is brighter and has a bit less depth which is fine for strumming but you notice a difference when you fingerpick.
@@SouthernUkuleleStore Thank you!
Hi Alex, Phil and all at SUS. Can you let me know when you have the Diana sound wave in stock please. Cheers
It's in stock on the website right now
Not according to the screen I’m seeing. You don’t have the Diana soundwave you have the Diana TE you have the Sophia Soundwave thanks for replying
A video on resonator ukulele please.
We don't have any or stock any I'm afraid. Thanks for the suggestion, sorry I couldn't oblige.
Can I purchase the Sonya from Southern Ukulele store if I’m in the United States. I cannot find anyone who sells either of these models😕
We don't have any Diana or Sophia Soundwaves left in stock - we sold 5+ of each the week this video came out and our next delivery will be early June.
We do ship to the USA - shipping a Tenor uke costs £59.50
Finally, I assumed you were talking about the Sophia as I don't think a Sonya model exists.
Excuse me, What is different between Flight Sophia Te Tenor Electro Acoustic Uke and Flight Sophia Soundwave Tenor Electro Acoustic Uke may I have know that?
The Soundwave pickup.
The normal Sophia has either a passive or double active pickup with no internal speaker or effects.
@@SouthernUkuleleStore I just got this ukulele the same as yours, but The pickup is inside the uku, not outside, what does supposed to be mean ?
And there’s a instructions guide book for how to make a big hole ... and I don’t understand that...help please
So you got the normal model with the double pickup which is a volume and tone control inside the soundhole and an active pickup.
The difference is the Soundwave pickup has effects - it's also much more expensive. If you don't understand the difference from my two explanations and by watching the video then I'm not really sure how to make you understand.
If you are still unsure then try contacting the dealer you purchased it from assuming you didn't buy it from us?
Love my Victoria soundwave but I'm having terrible feedback problems coming mainly from the C string when it's left open. It's not that the volume or the effects are up full even. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
That is interesting. Did you get it from us?
@@SouthernUkuleleStore Yes. Recieved it yesterday.I'm just experimenting with it now. It's not too bad if the volume and any effects are just under about halfway...any further and the feedbacks threatening! Daft question maybe, but I usually change my strings to daddario EJ99Ts (a lighter weight flourocarbon) I wonder if this would make a difference. I'm guessing not.
I wouldn't change the strings just yet. We are away until Tuesday but if you wouldn't mind emailing us about the issue - either Phil or I will give you a call early next week to discuss it.
Honestly, I can't think off the top of my head what it can be except a slightly hot pickup but I imagine one of the other guys will be able to figure it out.
Please email us about the issue at alex@ukulele.co.uk
Have a good weekend - we'll figure it out 😉
@@SouthernUkuleleStore No worries and will do. Thanks for the response 👍
@@SouthernUkuleleStore All sorted now. Can't remember name of the guy I spoke to on the phone!! But very helpful and friendly service. I won't hesitate to buy from here again. 😊 Thanks
Have you played the Flight Victoria tenor? If so, how would you compare its sound to the Sophia?
The Victoria isn't nearly as bright sounding because it has the satin finish. There isn't a difference in quality between the two really in my opinion.
@@SouthernUkuleleStore thank you for responding! That is interesting to hear. I don't know that I've ever played a glossy finish and satin finish back to back, and I was under the assumption that the only difference might be taking a tiny edge off the volume. Does this mean that the Victoria has a warmer or fuller sound, or is it just duller? Also could the acacia vs walnut laminate used for the backing potentially play a part in altering tone, or is it not really a meaningful difference because it is laminate?
To be honest I'm not sure I could pigeon hole it in the way you want me too. I made a sound sample of the Victoria using the same equipment as the one In this video at the link below so it would be worth you playing the two back to back to gain perspective.
ua-cam.com/video/Y2Vh0ZMd9Gs/v-deo.html
I don't think the satin finish makes it sound duller, it's edging towards a more warm and rounded sound but the spruce top still retains that pingy attack heavy sound so the difference is quite slight.
Southern Ukulele Store just hearing that it’s more rounded than the Sophia but still has that spruce attack sound is the information I was looking for, and it’s nice to have another good sound sample. I don’t have a place I can handle these instruments within three hours of me, so thank you for taking the time out to answer my questions and find me a link. I recognize the difficulty of giving solid answers about something as subjective and ambiguous as tone.
I got mine on March 16th (I was so excited!) only to find that the Effects only work when plugged in!! Not happy!!
Did it come from us? I've personally tried the 8-9 of these we have had so far and they have all worked... Nobody has reported an issue.
@@SouthernUkuleleStore No, it came from Music Shop Europe. I'm sure it's a faulty Actuator. Such a beautiful instrument and I wish I could fix it myself. It also has a buzz on the 2nd string (E). I have about 20 different Ukuleles and this one is the most expensive. I had to wait 45 days to get it so you can probably understand why I'm disappointed.
I'm assuming you've contacted them about it?
Either way all the best and good luck.
@@SouthernUkuleleStore Yes, and awaiting their response! Thanks!
I have the same ukulele, Flight Sophia etc... but has the Double C1U Active Pickup inside, care you tell me why?
It's extremely simple. You purchased the Sophia TE rather than the Sophia soundwaves. Same uke with a different pickup and the one you had Is about 30% cheaper.
Also, you have asked this question 3 times and I have answered every time.
@@SouthernUkuleleStore apologized sir, 😅 I forgot that I already asked, I hope you’re not taken badly!😆
@@SouthernUkuleleStore understand, thanks.
Not at all... Just wondered if it was a prank or if you hadn't read my other replies.
Are you getting these in concert size Alex.
They don't currently exist in another size. Eventually im sure they will...
@@SouthernUkuleleStore 😭😭😭😭
Can I order the Diana soundwave from the Netherlands?
You can when we have more stock but the first 10 we have had sold in days... Next delivery is June.
What is different between concert and tenor? Please thanks
The Concert has a 15 inch scale and a slightly smaller body. The tenor is about 20% bigger and has a 17 inch scale.
Southern Ukulele Store I get it, thanks
Can you get low G versions of those ukes ?
You just need to order a low G with it and we fit them for free
@@SouthernUkuleleStore okay thanks👍
Which one do you think is better for finger picking?
The Diana but there isn't much in it really... Spruce and Cedar are both great woods for fingerstyle playing.
@@SouthernUkuleleStore so you can't go wrong either way but just curious what makes Diana little better because of the tone? volume? Sustain? And does that mean Sophia is better for strumming?
The Diana is warmer but still crisp which suits fingerpicking. The Sophia is a bit more compressed when you strum it which I suppose is more suitable for strumming.
@@SouthernUkuleleStore thank you for your comment!
It's interesting that you like Sophia better but prefer Diana for fingerpicking. Thank you for great videos!
I don't know if it's that interesting... I find I prefer Ukes that are a bit less direct sounding. The Diana would be the conventional choice for a fingerpicker but I personally just lean more towards the Sophia 🤷🏻♂️
So the difference between these two is the wood?? Which one do you prefer?
The Sophia but the Diana is the one everyone always asks for...
@@SouthernUkuleleStore okay thank you!
@@SouthernUkuleleStore Can you say why you prefer the Sophia? I am trying to decide between the two (not Soundwave) and buying during COVID, I can't test them. Thank you!
I find the Diana is a bit too bright and responsive. The Sophia is a little bit more tame and lyrical.
@@SouthernUkuleleStore Did you mean the Sophia (not the Diana) is a little too bright? (The Sophia is the Spruce top, and I have read multiple times Spruce is the brighter of the two). Just wondering if you accidentally switched them or if this is what you meant.
Can you dem it through an amp please ?
No. I don't do demos through amps because the quality of amp is more important to the sound than the pickup.
It makes it impossible to give off an accurate representation of what to expect
Mmmm….Interesting but is it a gimmick or passing fad? Doesn't Yamaha make a guitar with a similar system? I don't like any effects on guitar and I'm on the fence on these ukuleles.
I getcha - it's just a bit of fun. As long as the instruments themselves are fundamentally good, the soundwaves system is more just a feature in the same way that a slotted headstock, cutaway or side sound hole would be. Thankfully Flight took two Ukuleles that were already popular and great value for money.
