@chrispember172 Or they know the real story about the real team and realize the changes this movie made were actually quite disrespectful to a lot of people in Odessa! Miles and his uncle in particular had their stories changed to a degree that is disrespectful at best and downright racist at worst! Simply put, the movie portrays it like doctors tried to warn him how bad his injury was, but he refused to listen and got himself permanently injured. In reality, it was *Miles* who rightfully detected something was seriously wrong with his knee, but doctors over and over again failed to diagnose the ACL tear and in some cases believed he was faking his pain! He and his uncle did actually go to Midland to get a second opinion due to realizing the Odessa doctors were making a serious mistake, and they proved to be right. The Midland doctor finally correctly detected and diagnosed the ACL tear. But even then, more malpractice arguably occurred - because the doctor told him it was still possible to play as long as he wore a brace. Obviously, that isn't true, and Miles today says if he was properly notified how serious an ACL tear is, he never would've played and gotten surgery immediately! And that's just one example - the most egregious example, but just one example. That's why a lot of people - and the people who arguably love this team and this real-life story *the most* - also hate this movie. Not all, but several.
One of my high school coaches was a coach of the 1988 Permian Panthers. He had one of the highlight reels at our school and we all watched it one of the last days of school.

If you have ever played Texas High School Football especially for the UIL State Championship then this film means something different… “I remember hemorrhaging, embolism, and even detached retina.. Sounds scary but when you smell the goal line… They’re only words. Just words”
@@Quintero3801 DFWs Southern Star.. I was a z back at Palo Duro Dons and every year up until 2008 we had made it to the playoffs. We always got beat by Randall Raiders or Canyon Eagles in the second round but boy was it fun to just play.
my dad played high school football for Miller High School in Corpus during the early 80s. he played both ways too so that mustve been an entire other beast. he also played baseball in the spring for Miller. sadly he never made varsity in either, buy he was pretty good at it when he was playing. if i wasnt so scrawny, i wouldve played football in middle school but i was short and scrawny at that point. once i got to high school, i just stuck with baseball and made varsity senior year after having worked through JV two years in a row. Texas high school sports in general are just another level and are cutthroat. thats what makes it even better
all 3 men in that room in the beginning knew booby wasnt ready to play. coach knew he wasnt ready, his uncle LV knew he wasnt ready & booby himself knew he wasnt ready to play to me the only reason they let him play was because all 3 of them knew that football was all he loved & its all he knew. All 3 of them knew that he would get hurt even more going out there & at 5:16 coaches expression proved all of it right that right.
In reality, the scary truth was that it was Miles *himself* and his uncle who figured out something was seriously wrong with his leg! Doctors in Odessa originally told him his leg was fine, despite the fact that he clearly couldn't put any weight on it. That's why Miles and his uncle went to Midland to get a second opinion - and *there* was where the doctor finally diagnosed the *actual* problem of a torn ACL! And yet, even then, the doctor told him he could still play as long as he wore a brace (even though, again, at that point it was *diagnosed* as a torn ACL)! Not sure if ACL tears were not well understood back then or that doctor was being reckless, but either way, that was horrible advice and even *that* doctor arguably committed malpractice by suggesting that! I hate the fact that this movie straight up lies and puts all the blame on Miles and his uncle when *they* were the ones who were right all along! At best, it's disrespectful! At worst, it's downright racist!

"DO YOU THINK YOU'RE PLAYING FOOTBALL? DO YOU THINK YOU'RE PLAYING FOOTBALL?" "Well shit, Coach, I thought we were playing croquet. I was wondering why people keep tackling me."
Shoulda stayed out and focused on getting healthy with a Full division 1 scholarship in front of him. Highschool football is only memories at the end college is an opportunity to make a living when your done
He needed corrective surgery. He actually talked about this in a video he made about 10 years ago... The coaches told him to just rehab it and they'll save him for the playoffs. But everyone underestimated how severe the injury was, and he did actually injure it worse in this game.
And tbh he thought just like you did and quit the team after the Midland Lee game to go get surgery and coach Gaines told him he was throwing his skirt up because back then coaches did care about your future, they only cared about what you can do for them now. And because of that, Gaines purposely withheld all of Boobies college letters until the end of the school year pretty much sabotaging his college and potential NFL dreams, all because he chose to get himself ready for the next level.
One of the best sport films ever.

There was no tenths of a second on the scoreboard back in 1988.

While you are right I don't think you realize how important football is to a high schooler in texas
Boobie probably required a surgery and therapy that just simply did not exist in those days. Modern sports medicine is amazing.
He needed corrective surgery. He actually talked about this in a video he made about 10 years ago... The coaches told him to just rehab it and they'll save him for the playoffs. But everyone underestimated how severe the injury was, and he did actually injure it worse in this game.
