Their teams looked like JV teams against the DFW teams. While some teams would be intimidated back then, Permian never was and felt they could beat any team--minus Dallas Carter. No one truly thought "We're going to beat them" when they got on the field. Carter was a college team for all intents and purposes. Boobie was a junior in this game. Joe Starkey was that announcer at the Cal Stanford game. Legendary. I grew up knowing the family in the East Bay Area. He does sound a bit like him doesn't he?
I know it's a little late to comment but those announcers called every Permian game for YEARS on the radio. Of course they are emotionally invested in the game, they are hometown fans just like the rest of us, living and dying on every play, they just got to have a mic. I couldn't tell you how many time's I have heard and THAT'S a MOJO touchdown! but i can tell you that it still gives me chills.
Holy cow that brings back memories. Crow really killed it with Boobie lead blocking for him. Those Permian Basin teams were great back in the 80s. I was a Midland High Bulldog.
@@Agslions people called it the "Little Southwest Conference" for a reason! A bunch of those kids of oil field workers went to SWC schools on scholarships.
He wasn't in the movie. This game took place a year before when the book/movie take place, although the book mentions that they showed highlights of this game at their preseason party of sorts. This is one of the most legendary games in Texas High School Football
I met Shawn Crow when he and I were in the same platoon in the Marine Corps, 1992. He was injured at that time, had a knee injury from a cheap shot in a football game with one of the teams on base. He was very friendly and very humble. Most of the Marines did not know about his football background and he took a lot of verbal abuse for missing a lot of training while being injured. There was a black guy in the platoon who was a constant loudmouth racist..."White boy" this and "white boy" that..... who had heard Crow had played a little college football. He challenged Crow to race him in the parking lot out in front of our barracks. Crow had a huge knee brace on his leg for months from his injury. Crow reluctantly accepted the challenge due to all of the trash talking. Crow smoked this loud mouth asshole. His name was Kimbrough. He was from Indiana. A few weeks later...Crow and I were out on a ride on our motorcycles and we came back to the barracks and these guys, Kimbrough included....had broken into his locker and found the vhs of the Arlington v Permian playoff game. You have to understand how utterly boring it could be in the barracks on a Saturday night. This was before cell phones, internet, etc. Bored like crazy if you didn't have a car to go out into town or if you were broke....between pay days. So these guys got into his locker looking for movies to watch. They find this game and start watching it from the beginning. By the time we walked into the barracks that night, there was probably 20 people from all over the neighboring barracks....all watching this game in our shitty TV lounge. We walked in right as they were coming back at the end and these guys immediately leapt to their feet many of them in tears congratulating Shawn. It was an awesome moment because Shawn Crow was such a good and humble guy and refused to talk shit or even curse when these guys would be very disrespectful to him. This highlight video in no way shows just how much Crow did to bring Permian back from behind....he got the ball a lot more than you see in this video. Everyone in the stadium knew it would be Crow, or else, and Arlington still couldn't stop him. He puked several times in the huddle and willed the team to victory single-handedly. A few months later our unit went overseas but Crow didn't go with us because he was still recovering from his knee injury and I never saw him or talked to him again. He signed my copy of "Friday Night Lights." We took several road trips on our motorcycles. He was open about his Christian faith. Rock solid guy. That's what you need to know about Shawn Crow.
+Gage Guerra He was definitely the primer back that season. Shawn Crow had almost 1,000 more rushing yards than Miles during the '87 season. And that's sayin' something....cause Miles had around 1,300 rush yards.
So Boobie didn’t really play a lot since he wasn’t the premier back and then the following season tore his acl.... in the book they made it seem like he was the top state RB...
Very good camera views for a 1980s high school football game. In todays high school football the views aren't this good in my area. Texas takes their football very serious
Awesome video! Thanks for the footnotes on the video and details on the description! Did not realize high school football could get so complicated. And this was in the freakin 80s!!! Kudos to the game commentators, too, for great game time analyses and commentary plus the passion!
Funny how Crow appears much better than Boobie Miles lol. I mean Miles was clearly big and fast as fuck but Crow appeared to be the feature back in this video
The best high school player I have ever seen in person is Darren McFadden from Oak Grove High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was the only good player on that team. I would love to have seen him on a state ranked team with good blocking and a good defense. The fact that he scored as many touchdowns as he did with a 180 pound offensive line speaks volumes for what kind of athlete he was. He played safety on defense, returned kicks, and played receiver, running back, full back, and quarterback on offense in the "wildcat" formation. He could throw it, keep it, hand it off etc. In high school Darren was 6'1" 190 pounds. His freshman year at Arkansas he was 210 pounds. The way boobie miles plays reminds me of watching darren.
This was his junior year.. And he really actually came on late in the season nearly all of his yards came in the last 6 games. Hence the reason he was was getting alot carries early in the game. Also his measurable were similar to eric Dickerson and Marcus Dupree
I see a lot of Eric Dickerson on his running style, a bit upright just looking for that hole to open and turn on the speed. - Marcus Dupree was another matter. Dupree would have been one of the greatest if he had 10 pro years. I read Dupree's quotes he always thought he would get hurt on day.
Miss those days! Too many new schools. Great athletes going to places like IMG academy. You lose tradition and pride because everyone wants to be a pro!!!
Just goes to show you the Size Doesn't Matter and you have people that are very competitive smaller guys can be bigger guys. It's all about heart drive and working together.
Yes yes yes I was thinking the exact same thing. We don't see football like this anymore. These kids today have no idea what real football is. I never thought I would say this, I always thought that Humanity would keep excelling, but as with football everything is in Decline. We no longer go for greatness. In fact greatness and great achievement is frowned upon in today's world where we give out participation trophies to the losers. Or in fact we don't even keep score anymore. The future used to be a bright star to look forward to, as we wondered what great things the future would bring. But now sadly the future is in Decline and we must Look Backwards for the truly great achievements of mankind. And football is but a microcosm of what has happened to the world. A world where greatness and merit mean nothing anymore period where hard hits are now illegal. You know when watching football today that no matter how proper the hit is if it just looks hard there's a flag coming. Sadly men may no longer be men. As being a man will result in a penalty flag.
The Enthusiasm of the announcers ... Great Job 👍👌...Go Permian Go ......Mike Winchell,,,,,James Boobie Miles ,, Billingsley , Crow , & Brown.....All the Permian Panthers Played With Pure Heart 💜 For the Love Of the Fanet
+goten1214 don't know what part of Texas you live but in DFW every high school football game is the playoffs when it comes to the public school districts. charter schools not so much
One thing you gotta remember about Texas Ball, these teams are HIGHLY separated by student size. At the time, the largest schools were called 4a, the largest now is called 6a. My school in 79 was 4A and graduated 660 kids. Permian and Dallas Carter and here Arlington would be that size. That is not to say, these larger schools play better ball than large schools in other parts of the country. But in Texas, we have over 1,000 high schools. Over 160K kids play football in Texas. So right away, at any top tier, in 87 that was 4A, they have TONS of student athletes to pick from. My school has 37 Pro Football players that graduated. In this video, when he said Odessa was outweighed by 70 pounds per man?? That is an example of how large the schools are, more big guys to suit up. Sure Odessa is just as large student body size but it's stuck out in the middle of no where. Every single kid in that town and surrounding area attends school there. Arlington has 7 other high schools within 10 miles that are just as big. As a last note, my school suits up 3 full 9th grade squads, separate cheerleaders and all. It's very competitive .....
those overtime rules are nuts. so in a game like that it almost hurts you to score on a big play as opposed to a 12 play drive where you get 5 or 6 first downs
+TheWholeSystemisFckd Yes, and that hurt Arlington at the end there when they took a 35-27 lead on only one play whereas Permian gained a few first downs on their drive to tie the game.
Whats really bad about how this game ended (tie) was in 1995 same 2 teams did this playoff dance again, ended in another tied game, 21/21, with Mojo advancing, again, on some tie-breaker. Thank heavens the UIL body finally decided to put overtime in the games for the deciding factor. Arlington finally put it to an Odessa HS in 2009 winning 70-42 in a playoff game.
I was at this game at Texas Stadium. It still gives me a sick feeling seeing the outcome. Arlington should've won this game, but, stupid turnovers handed it to Odessa. I'm not saying the Colts ran all over them, but, they were much better. This video is 10 minutes. I saw the entire game. Shawn Crow was really good, but, John Wilson for Arlington was the real stud of this game. That's the way it goes. If AHS would've not kept dropping the ball, this video would've been a Colt highlight reel. Oh, the announcers are from Odessa. That's why they get so excited when Odessa makes a play.
yep. Arlington blew that game out their ass. I was there too. Permian just had more mojo on their side. Although Arlington Had 70 lbs on Permian it sure didn't help em. Arlington coaches made a few stupid calls that cost em the game too..
Yeah, AHS's o-line and John Wilson were dominating the entire game. Shame AHS lost. All those kids played well together from jr. high to high school. Then Lamar started their run and national rankings and became the school of Arlington and DFW back then. Doubt AHS or LHS will ever be that good again.
I remember reading about this in Friday Night Lights, and thinking how silly it was not to have OT in Texas High School football, especially the playoffs!
Well,I have some info on James Miles Sir.As you might know he went too Ranger Jr.College.I was a teammate of his at Ranger Jr.in the fall of 1989 in which he wore #3,played with two knee braces as a RB,.He then moved too Atlanta,Georgia, and was working there for a number of years.Moved back too Monohans,Texas and was living with his kids. That's all the info that I last had on James Miles.I think Winchell is an Texas Attorney,or was one.I'am about 60% sure of that.👍🇨🇱
Dam this game right here and others I have read about... I’d love to go back in time and watch this game as a fan... both team were electrifying... but I would have sat on that mojo side... boobie miles was a great running back and the team came together... 🤙
The first tiebreaker is penetrations, meaning trips inside the opponent's 20 yard line. They tied on penetrations, so the next tiebreaker is first downs. If they're tied on first downs, it would go to total yards. Arlington led on total yards, so in reality they only needed a first down to win the game because they'd have tied the game on first downs and they were already tied on penetrations. Crazy rules, no? And yes, quite a few from Permian did.
I played on the same team as James Miles at Ranger Jr.College in the fall of 1989.He wore #3 in practice and in games.I played DE.He only blocked me on pass plays as a I was a scout team player at the time.Neither one of us ever knocked down the other down.6'3 Miles 225, and 6'0 190 me.Some great collisions took place💥.He get a good block, and say West Texas,I get a good contact I'll say East Texas LOL!😂Key Facts: Permian lost to our eventual 13-5A District Champion Marshall Mavericks 14-13 at Marshall.Guess who was the Mavs RB on that '88 team? I'am old played against Odell,Jr's dad,now I'am watching his son play for the Browns WOW!😳 Now I only tackle Odell,Sr.one time, and that was on the opening KO.I cut across the field and BLASTED HIM! out of bounds where he slid about 3 yds.near our bench. He got up and said" Man! shaking his head as he jogged too thier sideline.I gave him a mean face look.😂 We both lost to Jesse Armstead and Dallas Carter. My team Lufkin lost 31 to 7 in the 3rd Rd.at Texas A&M's Kyle Field.Marshall 5th Rd in the rain at UT Austin Stadium 14 to 12 on a last play TD cacth by future Miami Hurricane and Giants OLB Jesse Armstead.

Quarterbacks back in the day were tougher than some of today's LBs!!
Listening to these commentators made me wish I were at this game. The energy was CRAZY!!!
WOW...WHAT A GAME!!! I'd love to have been there for that one. And listen to that crowd...sounds like a damn Cowboys playoff game in there!!!
Not in 1987, lol. Closest the Cowboys got to the playoffs during that time was watching it on TV with the rest of us.
MOJO WINS! MOJO WINS! MOJO WINS! MOJO WINS!
This is the craziest high school football game I’ve ever seen
Who's here because they just watched the movie?...again
Eddie Booker me I love the movie
I'm watching it right now
Yup. Watched it Saturday.
Greatest sports movie ever
The Goat sports movie
thanks for explaining how Odessa won this game. i never knew those were determining factors in a game before overtime
Holy cow that brings back memories. Crow really killed it with Boobie lead blocking for him. Those Permian Basin teams were great back in the 80s. I was a Midland High Bulldog.
The old 4-5A district back then was Texas's greatest, year in and year out.
@@Agslions people called it the "Little Southwest Conference" for a reason! A bunch of those kids of oil field workers went to SWC schools on scholarships.
Wow! That was an incredible high school football game. Thx for posting.
whoever shawn crowe is ..hes a beast.... was he in the movie
Randy Bonk Thank you so much.
goten1214 thanks bro
Randy Bonk wow thats tight
Boobie Miles was a JR this season, while Shawn Crow (who received an offer from TCU) was a senior and the primer back this season.
+Gage Guerra
He was definitely the primer back that season. Shawn Crow had almost 1,000 more rushing yards than Miles during the '87 season. And that's sayin' something....cause Miles had around 1,300 rush yards.
Nice. I didn’t hear billingslees name announced at all
@@garretttacha8673 Boobie was blocking his ass off though
So Boobie didn’t really play a lot since he wasn’t the premier back and then the following season tore his acl.... in the book they made it seem like he was the top state RB...
@@alexibarra3472 Boobie was a more sought after prospect than Shawn Crow
Very good camera views for a 1980s high school football game. In todays high school football the views aren't this good in my area. Texas takes their football very serious
Well they were in Dallas stadium, soo
Love those 3 back formations
After playing football in highschool at this same time I can't help but watch and really get into this video. Simply awesome
Awesome video! Thanks for the footnotes on the video and details on the description! Did not realize high school football could get so complicated. And this was in the freakin 80s!!! Kudos to the game commentators, too, for great game time analyses and commentary plus the passion!
I've been watching the highlights of this game for 35 years. They get better each year. MOJO WINS! MOJO WINS!!
What a great team win they had alot of heart and that announcer was off the chain.
I hope Mr.Miles gets a percentage of these views.
This was his junior year.. And he really actually came on late in the season nearly all of his yards came in the last 6 games. Hence the reason he was was getting alot carries early in the game. Also his measurable were similar to eric Dickerson and Marcus Dupree
Marcus Dupree, not many young folk remember him
In one particular game, Boobie had 241 yards rushing and four touchdowns on just 8 carries against Abliene.
I'm from 30 minutes where Marcus Dupree played in Philadelphia ms. his legend is still as big as it gets around these parts.
@@joeledwards4496 Boobie blew up his knee in the season opener... his nuts hr even played
Enjoyed that. It’s football season baby. 2023
6:20 What a pass.
Dude hummed that ball.
FPietros “AND HE CAN PASSSSS”! 😂🙌
"Oh baby cakes" -announcer
Hanks a skitzo I laughed lol.
that was hilarious 🤣
😭😭😭
absolutly SICK video, this must be the team that put all of the pressure on the team in Friday Night Lights right?
What a game that was insane. Someone should make a movie about it.
Lol, maybe next year
That is awesome! I always thought boobie miles was the star but it looks like it was Sean Crowe. That’s some awesome football.
Miss those days! Too many new schools. Great athletes going to places like IMG academy. You lose tradition and pride because everyone wants to be a pro!!!
And everyone's dad is delusional and believes their 11-yr old is the next D1 prospect.
The announcers were amazing!
Beautiful commentary on the game.
Man eventhough I wasn't there it seemed like an awesome game! If only the pro's had the same purity and passion behind the game!
Just goes to show you the Size Doesn't Matter and you have people that are very competitive smaller guys can be bigger guys. It's all about heart drive and working together.
That was pretty much Permian's mantra for 30-plus years.
That hit @5:20!!
Wuda got ejected today for that hit lbs
Probably the best high school game ever, West Texas football rocks!
The hit at 5:20, man do I miss real football.
Wow. What an intense game. Texas football is this live huh? Pretty cool.
+jmaal2345 Not all games. This was a quarter final playoff game. THose playoff games are pretty live.
With those great big shelf pads these kids look huge for high school.
They can play and they can hit
those overtime rules are nuts. so in a game like that it almost hurts you to score on a big play as opposed to a 12 play drive where you get 5 or 6 first downs
+TheWholeSystemisFckd Yes, and that hurt Arlington at the end there when they took a 35-27 lead on only one play whereas Permian gained a few first downs on their drive to tie the game.
Was that like a State rule, or High School rule or something? I've never heard of it
@@hapaharley1706 Unfortunately, at the time it was SMH I'm glad they fixed it up
this announcers excitement is amazing
Who learned about Permian football from watching the show "Scholastic Sports America" on ESPN back in the 1980s?
They're playing my school Arlington High.
Arlington coaches made a few stupid calls that cost em the game too..
yep them theres the rules.
Ronnie Morris kick Em colts
Arlington punished for big plays
The thing that always stands out when I watch film of football in the ‘80s is how huge the shoulder pads were.
“Mojo wins! Mojo wins! Mojo wins!”
🏈👏👏👏🏈 Incredible!
what a comeback. Crow was a beast.
I went to Marshall high school and we had to play Odessa. There is nothing like Texas HS football
Crazy pass and catches for highschool
I remember reading about this in Friday Night Lights, and thinking how silly it was not to have OT in Texas High School football, especially the playoffs!
1987 high national football champions according to USA Today had a RB named Lectron Williams from Vigor High School. Great team and RB.
I need a where are they now for everyone in this game.
That looked like a college game.
That's all the info that I last had on James Miles.I think Winchell is an Texas Attorney,or was one.I'am about 60% sure of that.👍🇨🇱
“Nothing but babies and memories “ “Just babies and memories is all you’re gonna get!”
I'm in tearsall over again
Boobie kicked the shit out of people, with his strong blocking.
Love the old full back positions
awesome game footage thanks for sharing ...
Dam this game right here and others I have read about... I’d love to go back in time and watch this game as a fan... both team were electrifying... but I would have sat on that mojo side... boobie miles was a great running back and the team came together... 🤙
I know his son, Boobie Miles III, went to the same school together. Powerful Running back is hope he goes out there and can make his father proud
The graphics in this look like tecmo bowl lol
😅😅😅
😂😂😂
The first tiebreaker is penetrations, meaning trips inside the opponent's 20 yard line. They tied on penetrations, so the next tiebreaker is first downs. If they're tied on first downs, it would go to total yards. Arlington led on total yards, so in reality they only needed a first down to win the game because they'd have tied the game on first downs and they were already tied on penetrations. Crazy rules, no? And yes, quite a few from Permian did.
Permian beat us (El Paso Andress) in the playoffs that year to advance to the semis. I played against Boobie, he was a rare talent.
Think former Giants WR.I tell you later.I played for the Lufkin Panthers, and we lost at Marshall 33-29 after blowing a 29 to 12 halftime lead. How? 2 TO's Ret.TD's by Alford Jackson LaTech commit, NFL Vikings CB with Anthony Carter's team. Now the Mavs RB was #33 Odell Beckham,Sr.Yes!Jr's dad.He had 2 rushing TD's and 109 yds.rushing vs us.Yeah!
I hope you read the 1st comments before you read this one.Sorry about the long comments, but there are several connections. Now here's another.Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones played in the game of the Century vs Texas where my head Coach was Pat Culpepper who was a OLB #31.Jerry played Guard for Arkansas #64 in that 1963 game.Jerry said"He miss that block on Pat.In was a goaline stand in Arkansas. My coach at Lufkin High School had a huge black and white photo of the final play of the goaline play where hit the RB to win the game.
That is when football was football!
8:24 "C'mon, Are You Crazy!!!!"
4 days ago ? dang i thought no one was watching this recently
Well, I was today years old when I realized this is the game represented at the end of FNL the movie, not the Dallas Carter game which Permian only lost 14-10.
TOUGH 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾... ppl today ain’t tough enough for this..
These high school teams look better than today's college teams.
