  • Hello Steve here.
Yes I am not dead, however I am not making a regular habit of this.
As I have stated on my channel notes I have uploaded everything I have in my collection (to the best of my knowledge). However time moves on, as does the internet. This time ten years ago all of my web browsing was on a massive desktop tower computer, now I do the vast majority via iPhone and iPad.
Needless to say I haven't ditched Windows altogether, I still have a laptop.
On its hard drive I do have some files saved from the early days of the internet for TV pres geeks likes yours truly from several websites, when there was no UA-cam and only 56k speeds.
This series is sharing what other people have uploaded in uber low quality from websites that no longer exists, or things that we have simply forgotten were ever uploaded.
#1 1989 ITV Generic Test ident, LWT.
I believe I downloaded this from MHP Private Parts. Very recently The TV Museum Channel recently uploaded BBC1 and BBC 2 test idents from 1990, never broadcast. In 1989 before the generic ITV look was implemented fully, here is a test ident featuring the 1986 LWT ident.
Unfortunately due to it being a RealMedia file I have had no choice other than to point a mobile phone camera at the screen, but you get the jist.
© ITV plc 1989 and full credit to the member of MHP who brought this to the internet.
Enjoy, and I'll probably be back soon with more forgotten rubbish.

One odd thing for me is that Peter Lewis, announcing, calls the station 'LWT' in the same breath as using the phrase "part of the ITV network". AFAIR the latter was only ever heard in combination with the full "London Weekend Television" name between 1989 and 1992. In autumn 1992 the abbreviation returned, but "part of the ITV network" was dropped. So he'd never have said this on-air; this is as if he'd made a test recording. Which kind of lends itself to the theory that this is genuine. But many other things (as mentioned in the TV Forum thread that finally appeared!) suggest otherwise. I'm fascinated most of all by the revelation that indeed all of the generic idents were designed to be spoken over before, not after, the animation and music. Yet Yorkshire, possibly the only station that did this, still found it necessary to modify the thing to emphasise their regional identity further.

this can be described as this:
the regional logo slides to the left instead of shattering everywhere
    generic ident music plays
    flute music(?)
the word "ITV" appears one by one each letter than fading in (and showing a video inside of each letter)
the regional logo inside a triangle fastly slides to the letter "V" than unshattering back to place.
the regional name appears instead of fading in, again

If you're still around, where did you find that clip? And where's the full video, actually.

I remember this vid. Someone uploaded it to TV Ark's forum. Used to have a copy of it on my hard drive. Don't ask my to upload it, that hard drive suffered a hard drive crash.

Are you able to upload the original video file?

As a member of MHP Private Parts, I can find no record of anything relating to an LWT test ident from 1989 on there. Can you tell me what the file name is please?

You could improve the quality and upload the original video by just converting it to mp4 or mov. www.convertfiles.com/convert/video/RM-to-MP4.html

If you want a file that's easier to upload to UA-cam, you can send me the file and i'll convert it.

No way, this is a fake etcetc..
But seriously, I had never seen that before, an interesting find, never knew there was a test version of the 1989 ITV look.

+Adam Beckwith I can't comment on the authenticity of the ident, but it was uploaded along side the Anglia and Channel TV versions in the same format, around the same time.
